Chapter 2822: Something to Lose

Yesterday, Jet had shared a bottle of strong spirits with Nightwalker. The conversation was relaxed, but inevitably turned to their current predicament.

“The ship absorbs an ocean of essence from the divine flame, but climbing up to the surface will be difficult. We can train young Tyris and her husband to steer the ship, but even with six Saints working in shifts, we'll run ourselves ragged."

She gave him a curious glance.

“What are you getting at?"

Nightwalker looked her up and down, then grinned.

“Well, your pool of essence is several times deeper than that of any of us. Plus, you're the captain. It seems peculiar that you are not standing at the helm, no? Won't you take at least a shift or two?"

Jet studied him with a relaxed smile. Nothing of what he said was wrong, but she had removed herself from the rotation for a reason. When the Saints of Night steered the Night Garden through the air, all they had to do after a shift was spend a few days replenishing their essence. Jet could not do the same, though — instead, she would have to hunt a significant number of Nightmare Creatures to refill her shattered core. Which was not a problem, usually... however, she would be vulnerable until she did. If someone wanted to eliminate her, that would be the perfect moment to attack.

Was Nightwalker really asking her to take the helm because he wanted to spare the rest of the Saints some exhaustion, or was there a more sinister intent behind his request?

She took a sip of alcohol and shrugged, her smile remaining the same.

“I'll think about it”

A day before that, Naeve had been making a routine report to her.

“There were a total of twenty-four violent altercations between the civilians yesterday. Fifteen connected to the strife between the Domains, the rest due to mundane reasons. Bruises and lacerations, nothing serious. The troublemakers were detained to let them cool down."

He checked his notes.

“The food stores are holding up well. A few are depleted, but we are almost ready to harvest the innermost fields. That should cover the difference. All in all, our surplus seems sufficient to feed the additional population. There's nothing else to report, really."

Jet nodded.

"Good."

She glanced at him briefly, then asked in a neutral tone.

"Oh, by the way. Did you change the guard shifts in the Mainmast Pagoda a few days back?"

Naeve remained silent for a moment, checking his notes again. After shuffling through several pages, he nodded.

“Yes, there was a minor change."

Jet raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

He shrugged.

“A few soldiers were seen fraternizing with the turncoats, so I had to replace them. That, in turn, required pushing the shift change timing a bit."

Jet remained silent.

She wouldn't call changing security personnel a minor issue. Even if it was, why hadn't Naeve informed her?

Was it peculiar, or was she just being paranoid?

She smiled, then glanced away and nodded.

"Okay."

At some point between these two conversations, Jet was showing Sky Tide around the ship. They talked as they moved between the decks.

"Anyway. I hear that your daughter has run off to challenge a Nightmare?"

Tyris pursed her lips.

"She did.”

Jet studied her briefly, then chuckled quietly.

“Like father, like daughter. The apple does not fall far from the tree, huh?"

Tyris sighed and fell silent. Eventually, though, she asked:

“Is that where our Sovereign is? Has she run off to challenge the Fifth Nightmare?"

Jet spared her another look. The champions of the Human Domain were naturally curious about where Changing Star was, considering that the world seemed to be falling apart at an abominable speed.

“As I said before, I do not know."

She wasn't lying. Jet herself did not know where Nephis and Sunny had disappeared to, only that they had gone to complete a vital mission. Even Cassie did not seem to know, despite the fact that she had been the one to inform them about that development.

Tyris frowned.

“Do you really not know, or are you only saying that you don't know?"

Jet turned to look at her.

It was natural for Sky Tide to want to know where the Supreme she had sworn to serve was. However... that was the third time she had asked Jet, despite receiving the same answer the first two times.

Was she really asking out of concern... or was she asking because someone else really, really wanted to know where his opponents were?

"I really don't know."

Tyris did not ask her the same question again, but would stare at her strangely from time to time after that.

All of it was quite distressing. The suspicion, the ambiguity, the waiting... it was honestly a bit tiring.

Jet almost wished that, if something were to happen, it would happen already.

‘I wonder... can I defeat all six, if things devolve into bloodshed?’

She exhaled slowly.

Tyris and Roan had the terrain advantage here, in the Sky Below. Naeve and Bloodwave were at a disadvantage instead. Aether... she wasn't sure how his Aspect and the divine flames influenced each other, so it was hard to tell.

Nightwalker was an old monster who was utterly lethal in any environment, as well as the one she was most wary of.

Still...

If Jet had to bet, she would bet on herself. If they were to attack her, she'd probably kill at least most of them.

Possibly even all of them.

She really wished they wouldn't, though. Chances were, they were not going to. There were easier ways to defeat her than a battle, after all.

There was an entire ship of people under her command, and each of those people could become a hostage. What was she going to do if the Saint at the helm of the Night Garden threatened to drop it into the ocean of divine flames unless she surrendered?

What would she do if they forced her to calculate the value of her own life against the unknown number of lives she was meant to protect?

The golden fruits were usually sweet, but today, the one she had plucked tasted bitter.

Jet sighed.

“Life is indeed full of surprises. But, strangely... I miss the days when I had nothing to lose..."

I think they're going to become supreme... Each one achieving the impossible... Efiie is having to endure hunger, Kai is without his tongue and will have to find a way to command, Jet will have to find a way to endure being without essence or absorb the essence of the divine flames somehow... Cassie will do what her name reveals, "Song of the Fallen," it will be the last, witnessing the fall of humanity.

They still need domain and to learn how to use will; without it, even if they overcome a supreme challenge, they will not become supreme. An example of this is Jet in the Eterna City, who completed a supreme challenge and did not become supreme.

I don't know if domain is necessarily a rule... The imortal of nine said that many have reached the supreme level by performing impossible feats, even killing a supreme being, for example. Jet consumed the ghosts, who knows if her domain lies in that kind of connection... Cassie's is due to her connection with her Marked Ones... Effie has her own wolves... Leaving only Kai...

Cassie is definitely coming to the win on this one. Wish in the end they’d kill Mordret for good but unfortunately he’s sticking around until the very end I’m afraid. Dude should have been killed thousands of chapters ago or at the very least when Sunny and Nephis first became supreme. They could have easily hunted him down. But they didn’t want to kill a strong Saint which is beyond idiotic when they knew how many people he had already killed and how he’d never step. Total psycho

I need Sunny to rip off his balls. I need Cassie to stab one of his eyes. I need Kai to cut off his tongue and shoot it. I need Effie to shove that Divine spear right up his ass like a shish kebab. I need Jet to mutilate his soul. I need Nephis to burn him to ashes and mix it in with crack so they could get a real high because his powers would really make everyone be tripping balls because they deserve the break

Ok, this is not exactly a theory, but rather a set of guesses through which I like to look at the world of a slave. I would like to hear your opinion, questions, problems with this theory, and so on.

As a person develops, their Will improves. With proper development, they gain the ability to shape their Will into a Concept. Therefore, Gods are capable of creating concepts. Proof: Time, Space, Death, Writing, Reflections, and Nothingness.

Will is the ability to change the world and yourself (because you are also a part of the world). Gods must be able to use their Will on a global scale or on a large part of the world. Therefore, they are able to change the world using Concepts. Therefore, they have done so. Since there was nothing before the gods, the entire world is a set of Concepts. This also explains the ability of Will to influence the world. Will does not influence the world, but rather the Concept that consists of Will, which means that Will influences Will.

So, the whole world is the Will of the higher beings, which exists in a variety of forms.

What is a human being? First of all, it is the same Will. A human being consists of a shadow, a body, and so on. It is a manifestation of other people's Concepts. A human being also has a spark of the first Flame. Other creatures also have a Flame, but their Flame comes from the soul of the gods, which means it is different from the original Flame.

Gods, like humans, must have aspects. So, what would these aspects look like if they were part of beings that were entirely made of Will? They will become the foundation for their existence, just as other people's Concepts are the foundation for their Will. In this case, Aspects are the source of all Concepts.

So, if Aspects and Concepts are essentially the same thing, how do they interact? For starters, not everyone can "unlock" their Aspect, as Ananke mentioned. To do this, one must engage in "something" for a long time and learn to absorb essence\Will, which means they must use their Will to form a soul core from their own or someone else's essence\Will. And this "something" differs from person to person. Why? This is because a person is bound by other people's Concepts. Their body, their destiny, their environment, and their actions are all imposed on them by someone else. Therefore, their Will and Aspect cannot take action without the right conditions. They cannot manifest themselves unless they are surrounded by Concepts that allow them to do so. This is similar to how Sunny fought against the Sacred Ones.

As the Aspect rises, it dictates more and more of its Will over other Concepts, which is especially noticeable at the ranks of Holy and Sacred.

There is one detail left: what creates the Aspects?
    1. They are created by people themselves. I like this option, but it contradicts everything that has been said earlier.
    2. There is a finite set of Aspects. It looks good, but I don't like it at all. First, this option stinks of determinism, and second, an unchanging Flame cannot exist in a world of Chaos, which means that everyone will die in the end. This is boring.
    3. Aspects can change, be created from scratch, or be mixed, but this is not done by a human, but by the Flame. This corresponds to the information about the "unveiling" of an Aspect, and at the same time allows the Flame to constantly adapt to the ever-changing Chaos.
I like none of them, so I gotta work here.

So, what do we have? A person is born with a certain Concept\Aspect, and as they gain more power, they are able to dictate this Concept to others. Another person is also born with their own Concept, grows, opposes the previous Concept, and dictates their own. Repeat this over and over again. In this way, the world creates itself, constantly changing and adapting to the attacks of the Void.

A few questions and problems I've noticed:
    1. Why are the flames of the creatures different?
    2. How exactly do aspects appear?
    3. What are the ranks of aspects?
    4. Did the daemons have aspects?
    5. What is the connection between an aspect and a flaw?
    6. What are crystals?
    7. Why do shadows, reflections, and vessels use will?
    8. Is will the only matter?

I might be wrong but this is my picture
The difference between Flames of those born of gods and those born of desire
Is the same as making a tree out if planks, you can make it look like tree but it's not alive. And I don't think there is connection between aspect and flaw, cause divine users don't have the worst flaws posable

Ah, by "Aspect-Flaw connection," I meant that old remark about a conceptual connection. Like "shadows don't lie," "fire consumes itself," and so on. I just want to look at it from that perspective.

Damn, I lost the message with the explanation. Then let's do this quickly. Will and Aspect are "stored" in the core of the soul. Evidence: the process of natural awakening of the core. Therefore, Will can be "colored" by Aspect or Concept. Evidence: the unique cores of the divine trio and some creatures. What is Will "colored" by? By the Innate Aspect, a piece of Flame. Therefore, the Flame is also "colored." Therefore, creatures receive an already "colored" Flame, while humans have a "pure" Flame. (I believe that at the rank of Sacred, your entire being is "colored" by Aspect. Because of this, the differences between your own Flame and someone else's Will are leveled. Because of this, Sacred Ones can share their Flame, giving life.)
Problem: if the Flame of humans is colored by their own Aspect, and the Flame of creatures by someone else's, then what is the difference? I have no idea.

So the annology with branches is quite close.
