Chapter 2792: Status Quo

Asterion had said what he wanted to say. And Nephis had, too.

In the end, the champions of the Human Domain were unconvinced. Their faith in Changing Star remained unshaken despite the Dreamspawn's efforts. As for their wariness of a new conflict between two Supremes... on one hand, those fears were put to rest. It did not seem like there would be another violent war — at least not anytime soon.

However, at the same time, it was clear that there was a deep animosity between their ruler and the last of the original Sovereigns. More than that, even if Nephis had not outright called Asterion a threat, she made it clear that he was not an ally to humanity. That he could not be trusted.

Some had known it, already. Others were only learning it now.

In any case, the council had served its purpose. The leading figures of the Human Domain had been informed of the situation and witnessed a verbal clash between the Supremes with their own eyes. Eventually, they were dismissed and left the Immortal Flame manor.

Only a few people stayed behind.

On one side of the hall, Nephis and the members of her cohort remained in their seats. Across from them, Asterion was still leaning back in his chair, his legs crossed. Sunny quietly emerged from the shadows.

"Did you enjoy yourself?"

Asterion gave him an amused glance.

“Enjoy myself?"

He pondered the question for a short while.

"No... not particularly. To be honest, I don't really enjoy much of anything — unless I remember to make myself enjoy it."

The answer solidified Sunny's suspicion that Asterion did not experience emotions as ordinary people did. In fact, it seemed that he did not feel anything at all — perhaps he had always been that way, or maybe it was the result of having purposefully neutered his heart with the powers of his Aspect. Now, Asterion only seemed to feel emotions that he chose to conjure... or stole, like a sinister spirit that fed on the emotions of the others.

Sunny sighed.

“That's a pity. I hoped that at least somebody would enjoy that distasteful performance."

Asterion chuckled.

"Well, I'll have to admit it then. It was a bit fun, ruffling your feathers like that."

He looked at Effie.

“Saint Athena, it is a pleasure to see you again. We didn't get a chance to chat the last time... how is your son? Little Ling is such a precious boy. I hear that he is busy studying right now."

Effie regarded him in silence, then looked away with a somber expression.

"You really talk a lot, don't you?"

Asterion shrugged.

“Do I? Well, perhaps. I spent close to decades on the Moon, after all. I couldn't even escape into the Dream Realm or be expelled from this dreary world by its laws, all because of the Unholy thing that dwells there. And as you can imagine, it was not exactly a good conversation partner. In fact, all I could do was hide and pray that it doesn't find me — so, forgive me for finding joy in simple things like talking."

He smiled.

“Ah, but you didn't answer my..."

However, at that moment, Nephis finally interrupted him in a cold tone:

“I just don't understand what you are counting on."

Asterion looked at her in surprise.

"You don't? Oh, my... and there I was, thinking that I explained my plans quite clearly. Considering that you haven't been able to offer me any meaningful resistance, I'd say I am doing well."

Nephis studied him impassively.

“So, what is your plan, exactly? Spread your influence slowly, enthrall more and more people, then drive me into a corner when all of humanity has become encompassed by your Domain?"

Asterion grinned.

"Well... yes. Roughly, that is the plan."

She remained silent for a short while, then sighed.

“You weren't wrong, though. About me. About how I only care about my personal goal — that goal being conquering the Nightmare Spell."

He raised an eyebrow.

"So?"

Nephis looked at him evenly.

“So what do you think I will do when humanity ceases to be my responsibility and becomes an obstacle that stands in my way instead?"

Asterion looked at her with interest.

“What? Will you burn all these pitiful people that you've chosen to protect to ash?"

Nephis just stared at him silently.

Then, she raised an eyebrow.

“You think I won't?"

A faint, eerie smile twisted her lips. Asterion seemed to frown a little at the sight of that smile.

He chuckled.

"Don't tell me that you took what I said about you being the Star of Ruin seriously. Then again, I guess extinction is also a change..."

He lingered for a few moments, then shrugged.

“I guess we will see when the time comes. You will be a Supreme only in name by then, anyway, while my Domain will have become staggering and immense. With a Domain like that, even dealing with carriers of Divine Aspects like you three shouldn't be much of a problem."

Asterion shifted his gaze to Sunny and studied him with a look of regret.

“Of course, I'd much prefer to devour you instead of simply destroying you. But, to be honest, I have never enthralled a Supreme before... I am not even sure that it's possible. We'll see about that, too."

With that, he rose from his chair and looked at them, his gaze lingering on Cassie for a few moments.

Then, Asterion bowed.

"So, what do you think? Do you regret making that bet yet?"

Chuckling quietly, he turned around and walked out of the hall, leaving an oppressive silence behind him.

As soon as Asterion disappeared from sight, his shadow seemed to vanish from Sunny's senses, as well, as if it had never existed at all.

He let out a heavy sigh.

‘This went about as well as expected.'

"Do you remember how we wanted to stall for time while searching for a way to deal with that creepy guy?"

Sunny turned and looked at his friends with a dark expression.

“I think the time we thought we had was just reduced by half."

Things are gonna have to progress pretty dang quickly, then. We still need to kill the Vile Thieving Bird as Sunny, without his True Name, will certainly not survive the 5th Nightmare.

Your assumption is based on a flawed premise. The nightmare seed (seed of corruption) can only be accessed thanks to the nightmare spell, so it's not the real name he needs to recover, but rather the login to the server. The agent suspects Sunny has to kill VTB, but the agent knows how complicated fate can be. I I imagine Sunny arriving at VTB and VTB saying to Sunny, "Here, take this back, I don't want any more of this, it only brought trouble."

This battle of ideas is starting to drag on a bit; I'm not reading it with as much enthusiasm as before. I hope G3 will give the story a twist in the near future; if it just stays like this verbal sparring, it's going to get boring.

Our Lord Asterion is truely such a humourous person. Its only a matter of time when all of humanity understand this.

Lady Nephis will burn down the entrie humanity if its stand in her way but our Lord will simply encompass it. We will be one with our Lord.

This is it right here smart People forget that you have to give G3 a chapter to two and all things will make more sense.
    Quote: mischievous schemer
Okay now I better understand what Asterion's goal was for this debate. He knows what he is saying is pointless in front of the powerful people in the world, however information spreads like a virus.

His goal wasn't to enthrall the saints, masters or awakened who could understand Nephis's decision. His goal was to first enthrall the weak but billions of mundane people. With what Nephis risked to do gets leaked out, he can now easily manipulate the emotions of the mundane people and make them lose the trust in Nephis.

The mundane serve as a foundation which would give him more power to easily enthrall the masters and saints. By taking away the foundation it makes it easy for him to tip over the powerful people in the top.

We were all expecting some sophisticated elaborate scheme for Asterion to pull however he showed a very simple plan with a very powerful effect. Now I am not as annoyed by what happened in the last few chapters

Contused logic. There was no danger to hundreds of millions of people. Nephez would either become the Supreme and kill Anvil and Song, or she would not be able to kill them because she is not the Supreme, and she would die.
In general, why doesn't Sunny try to create an enchantment based on Saint's mental invulnerability? He has already taken her form and acquired her abilities.

The cohort stole those citadels so they were cut off from anvil and songs domains. Even if she lost, all those people would've been put in the first nightmare regardless.
To create an enchantment like that probs would require alot of essence from the user so it's not useful for Saints and below.

Supremes that ascend through the nightmare spell rely on citadels to build their domain, Supremes that didn't still benefit from them but they don't need them as much.

Guys, what is your favorite and least favorite arc, and why?

My favorite is Antarctica: the ending, the defeat, the death of millions, the funeral of friends, and Sunny's personal growth.

My least favorite is the War arc. There's too much going on, but most importantly, King Swords and Ki Song were just dumped without being fully developed. All the Chekhovian guns (Asterion, Mordred, Rein, and the Skull Creature) were simply forgotten. I still remember the disappointment.

My personal favorite is ToA, the action, the loredrops, and even the twists is awesome.
My least favorite is the current Asterion arc, I get the premise but the idea of having ideology war against someone with mass brainwashing ability is simply too dumb for me. G3 think that mass kidnapping is extreme enough, but I think they should be announce Asterion's ability while keeping him anonymous and do a massive lockdown on all Dormant, Awakened and Ascended that way Cassie can check and erase any memory related to Asterion then.

Me Personally, I love the Forgotten Shores Arc. The part where they ride the colossal statue across the Dark Sea and its subsequent fight with the Titan, when they desperately escaped the Tree only to be attacked by the deep sea dweller, Sunny unlocking his Aspect Legacy, finding Weavers Mask, and him trying to figure out the truth of the Forgotten Shore etc, so many things happened, without ever turning a bit boring like the Ariel's game(Weaver's lore drop was pretty good though). I also love the Antarctica where we see sunny mature, but i love adventure stories so Forgotten shore takes the prize for me followed by Antarctica and Third Nightmare

The Forgotten Shore before they entered the city. The entire world of the novel is a cursed god's nightmare. And if the first nightmare shows what "terrible" means (indifferent people, grotesque creatures, and harsh trials), then The Shore shows us a "dream." Vast expanses overgrown with scarlet coral, a strange cycle of day and night, a bottomless sea, and a feeling of complete loss and uncertainty. The Forgotten Shore operates by strange rules, has unusual restrictions, and everything "normal" feels slightly different. Because of this, it feels more like the creation of a mad artist than a real world.

In short, this arc feels like the most terrifying moment in Minecraft and the loneliest second in Dark Souls.

My favorite is the second one, when they enter the city of darkness, without a doubt. My least favorite is Volume 8, when Sunny is forgotten by everyone, except for the romance with Nephis which only happens from the middle to the end of the volume; otherwise, nothing relevant happened in this volume, just Sunny cooking, selling memories, and other everyday things..

      Especially the soul devouring tree.
      LO49 was also nice.
Arrival in the tomb of arial was also nice.
Sunny being stuck in a loop was also nice.

The start of Shadow Slave and the terror of LO49

The beginning was a clear cut fascination- it just caught me off guard and I was intrigued from then on.

What really made me stay was LO49 Terror.

I felt anxious. I felt put off. I felt helpless and I was greatly infatuated...it's embarrassing...but reading that arc really did make me giggle and kick my feet while on bed...
