Chapter 2774: First Symptoms

Instead of simply hiding in Rain's shadow, Sunny wrapped himself around her body to augment her. Godgrave might have been somewhat safer now, but it was still more or less a Death Zone — with other people around, he could not use his powers freely, which meant that his sister could use an additional layer of protection.

Letting out a sigh, she summoned her bow and a quiver. Then, she began walking east. Before too long, the mighty merchant caravan had caught up with her. Enormous Echoes were pulling rolling fortresses across the Road of Shadows, each of the scarred wagons protected by several cohorts of seasoned Awakened warriors. The procession looked fearsome, and the head Echo especially so — the Master in charge of the caravan was riding on its head, and was now looking at Rain.

She walked to the side of the road and waved at him.

"Greetings!"

The Master gave her a suspicious look. "Greetings. You startled me, girl... what is a young Awakened like you doing in Godgrave alone? Walking through the darkness with no lantern to light the way, on top of that.” Skinwalker was gone, but people were still wary of strangers met on the road. This Master, too, was on edge.

Rain simply grinned.

"My cohort decided to challenge a Nightmare, but I chose to stay back. So, I am walking to Red Hill by my lonesome now. And I can see in the dark, so I don't need a lantern... plus, I can take care of myself. I know these parts well."

He looked her up and down, his gaze lingering on her powerful Memories.

"You're a veteran?"

Rain nodded.

"Seventh Royal Legion, from start to finish. Oh, and then I stayed back to build this road."

She gave the Road of Shadows another satisfied stomp.

The Caravan Master whistled.

"A royal legionnaire, huh?"

He hesitated for a moment, then asked: "Are you any good with that bow?"

Rain gave the Beast of Prey a little shake. "Would I still be alive if I weren't?"

He laughed.

"True, true. Well, if you're not in the mood to walk all the way to Red Hill, hop aboard. I'd be crazy to refuse the company of one more experienced Awakened. A caravan can never have enough defenders, you know." Rain gave him an exaggerated bow.

"Much obliged!"

Soon enough, she was climbing over the battlements of the head wagon. There, a group of grimy Awakened welcomed her with tense greetings.

Introductions were short.

Rain stared at one of the guards intently, then said in a tone of disbelief:

"Holy hell. Pill, is that you?"

Out there among the merchant guards, a bearded man with harsh eyes was leaning on an enchanted spear. He gave Rain a confused look, then did a double take. "Huh... Rani?"

She stared at him with wide eyes.

"Since when are you Awakened?"

The rest of the guards seemed amused. "Pill, do you know this girl?"

He suddenly seemed excited.

"Of course! We were on a survey team of a road crew together, back in the Song Domain. We were both mundane people back then. Gods, I never expected to see you again... I thought you were dead!"

Indeed, he was one of the laborers Rain had shared the woes of surveying the Moonriver Plains under Tamar's command with during the construction of the road to Godgrave.

She smiled.

"Well, as you can see, I am very much alive. It's good to see you, too... but weren't you going to open a family shop in some nice city south of Ravenheart? What happened? How did you end up guarding a merchant caravan?"

The conversation flowed naturally from there, and soon, Rain was accepted by the grumpy caravan guards as one of their own. Some time later, she asked:

"Judging by the scars on the armour of your wagons, it's a bumpy ride. I have to admit, I've never traveled with a caravan before... how dangerous is it, exactly?"

The guards looked at each other, then sighed.

Pill offered somberly:

"As perilous as you can imagine. The Dream Realm is not what it used to be, but it's by no means tamed. Sometimes, we get a few whole days of peace and quiet, but usually, there's at least several skirmishes with Nightmare Creatures each day... some worse than others."

Another guard looked into the distance wistfully.

"Still, by Immortal Flame's mercy, all of us will reach the destination alive."

A third one chuckled.

"The Ivory Island is far away, so Changing Star's grace is unlikely to reach us all the way here, in this cursed place."

He surreptitiously looked north, where the Hollow Mountains were hidden beyond the darkness.

"The King of Nothing is much closer. Although that one is a madman who likes to kidnap people... so, I wouldn't be hoping for his help, either."

It was then that one of the guards — an older man with greying hair and a wry squint to his eyes — spoke from his station at the battlements.

"There is a third Sovereign now, haven't you heard? And he is partial to wanderers like us. A vagabond priest of the Moon Church told me all about him."

Rain shifted slightly, sparing him an evaluating look.

The man smiled.

"His name is Asterion."

Rain frowned.

At the same time, her brother's voice whispered into her ear:

[Be wary of that one.]

Rain moved her hand to shape a subtle sign. [Why?]

He lingered for a few moments before answering.

[Whether these people set out from Ravenheart or from the Weeping Goddess, they would have been on the road for weeks. But that bastard only revealed himself today. The news travels fast... but not that fast. I don't like it.]

Rain's frown deepened.

‘Asterion...'

She had heard that name before. In fact, she had heard it too often, in recent months. And every time she had, the circumstances were a little odd.

Perhaps because Rain was both a Shaper and a giver of Names, she was very sensitive to them.

And that name, Asterion, made her skin crawl.

More than anything, it made her feel like she should never speak it aloud, and most of all, should never allow it to take root in her mind.

She looked at the older guard somberly.

He was smiling happily.

"Changing Star and the King of Nothing might not help us. But Lord Asterion will."

An uncomfortable silence settled between the guards.

Eventually, they laughed.

"A third Sovereign? Did you hit your head, fool?"

"Even if there is a third Sovereign, he is probably a rotten bastard. All of them are — except for Lady Changing Star, of course."

"No wonder you've been borrowing money recently. Did you donate your pay to that Moon Church crook?"

Pill shook his head and gave the man a derisive smile.

"Stop embarrassing me in front of Rani, will you? Goodness, she'll think that we wanderers are all weak in the head department."

But the older guard just continued to smile.

"You'll see."

Okay this is good news that Rain is not getting infected that easy by Asterion. Now because of this my whole idea on how this arc is going to play out has changed.

I think that Rain is going to stick by Sunny through the whole arc and would see her play a huge role and who knows she might even go to the Tomb of Ariel with Sunny.

The three major characters to look out for in this arc has to be Cassie, Mordret, and Rain.

Rain worked hard to awaken, but she never really risked her life. What can a mere awakened do against a supreme? Especially such a pampered one...

Well who knows if she is going to be even awakened to pose a problem to Asterion. She could pose a problem through being an ascended. Her powers would definitely be useful against him, also her life now is constantly at risk because of her connection to a sunny and her powers which Asterion would definitely know

What if Sunny augmented Rain with all 7 of his shadows? Could she assign some magic meaning to Asterion's name that make people forget it? That could be interesting. Even if it doesn't fully affect Asterion, it could weaken him.

I don't think Rain would be really easily infected by Asterion. Remember, she is not seeded by the Nightmare Spell. What makes Asterion powerful is that his domain is related to heartband thought and his connection to Nightmare Spell gave him the ability to easily infect other people.

Not how it works and it was never stated anywhere that his power comes from the spell.

He can infect anyone, these who carry and these who don't carry the spell.

The people at bastion and Cassie's mom are examples of that.

i think you are misunderstanding something my fellow believer. Our Lord Asterion is not a god (yet) he is a saviour who is trying his best to save the world.
Let me ask you is being scared a crime? if the alternative is much more likely to succeed shouldn't one follow the same? Was natural Supremacy done by Lady Nephis and Lord of Shadows easy, so why does natural Apothesis will be easy??

If you truly believe in the Lord, see him as a reflection of yourself he embodies all our qualities and try to make the best of it.

Daddy Asterion has been aware of Rain's existence from the very beginning trying to show her writings of "Asterion" in random walls hoping Rain mistakenly read them out. That's why she was already familiar with the name when she first heard that is the new sovereign sunny was talking about and she was cautious of saying his name right away because of the power it could bring once she calls him daddy.

In my opinion, Rain's Flaw doesn't align with the story.
    Let's take other Flaws:
Sunny enjoyed lying and manipulating others – his Flaw deprived him of that ability.
Ki Song wanted a family – she has no opportunity to have one.
Kai wanted to remain in blissful ignorance about the people around him – he senses lies.
Anvil grew up on stories of his father's honor and valor, that he must care for his family, his clan, his people – everyone dear to him dies (in my opinion, one of the cruelest Flaws).
And Rain already didn't want to kill – wouldn't it be more logical for her Flaw to push her toward killing?

She grew up as a sheltered mundane. It’s not crazy to think she was averse to killing but it’s a bit much to say she HATED killing. She was ready to kill when she became an Awakened chapters ago. there’s no real law that the flaw must be a hindrance for your entire life either. Sunny is doing just fine. Anvil and Ki Song became Supremes. Mordret is a Supreme that should have died a billion times by now.

I always understood flaws as something different.
Sunny didn't like to lie; he lied out of necessity because, in the reality he lived in, being honest would kill him. His flaw didn't come to punish him, but to make him a better person. It's as if the spell pointed and said, "This part here is broken; it would be good if you tried to fix it."

Kai lived surrounded by lies and falsehood, which is why he was so naive and innocent. He lived in a perfect world; his flaw came to show him the real world and teach him to live with it.

Nephis wanted power, he wanted to avenge his family. His flaw came to show him that the cost of this desire would be very high, and that not everything can be solved with force.

Anvil's flaw is one of the cruelest in my view. He wanted to protect his family, but his flaw forced him to lose everything he loved... and instead of enjoying the time he would have with his loved ones, he gave up on love. Instead of understanding his flaw and trying to fix it, he only made things worse until it was reduced to just that.

Regarding Rain, she didn't want to kill, but she lives in a world where everyone believes that's the only option, where she would be forced to kill and eventually reduced to that (even more so given her appearance). Rain is a builder who could build anything, but was being forced to build only weapons. Her flaw came to show this error and to show other options.

There were other weird flaws too, like Dorn's for example, which made his body to grow constantly. It's hard to explain unless his dream was to remain in a small frame.

We don’t actually know what Anvil’s flaw is. We know he thinks it’s the reason he’s lost everyone he cherished. But I find it hard to believe that one person’s flaw can decide the fate of potentially everyone else. I’m not saying that his actual flaw can’t be interpreted into what he’s presented it as, but the actual thing can’t be so powerful as to decide the fates of people it doesn’t concern. The flaw showing him when or how people will die would be more believable than the flaw itself killing them or consigning them to death. Everything dies, but too OP for one mf’s flaw to just decide who dies. Another possible interpretation is that his flaw magnifies his feelings of loss or any emotional pain he feels, not unlike Nephis’ absurd flaw. So as someone who had lost a lot of people, the flaw made the sadness/anguish more pronounced.

I think Rain is already affected dawg. Remember she saw the Asterion Graffiti at Bastion when she was on a little date with Telle and Tamar. If she's not infected then it's partially suppressed due to her being a Shaper, she already knows that name is bad news.
