Chapter 2766: A Bitter Reversal

By the time Effie and Sunny reached the Ivory Tower, the rest were already there. They had seen the unusually lively streets of Bastion on the way. The growing crowd of prominent champions of the Human Domain gathered on the pier of the Castle, waiting for a ferry to come and take them to the Ivory Island... where, without a doubt, representatives of the Immortal Flame clan would shine a light on the preposterous rumors quickly spreading across the world.

The rumors that Asterion, the Dreamspawn, was back from the dead and claiming his place as the third Sovereign of humanity.

'Damn it all.'

Things had gone much more smoothly when Mordret suddenly attained Supremacy. Now, everything was in chaos. The Fire Keepers were supposed to deal with the turmoil, but with one of their leaders gravely wounded and the other busy treating her wounds, they fell into inaction. None of them knew who Asterion was, anyway...

Because simply knowing about his existence had seemed perilous once.

And it was. Everyone either already knew or would soon know about him, though, and therefore everyone was already in danger.

"How is she?"

Cassie was laying on the bed in Neph's personal quarters on the highest floor of the Ivory Tower, while Nephis herself was kneeling beside her, soft light slowly disappearing from under her skin.

She gave Sunny a somber look.

He could see the answer himself. Some of Cassie's wounds seemed to have closed, but the gaping hole where her left eye had been remained exactly the same.

The bleeding had stopped, at least.

Her bloodied face looked incredibly pale in the bright sunlight pouring into the windows. As she lay there, vulnerable and unconscious, Cassie seemed younger than usual... no, actually, she finally looked her age. Not that age still held the same meaning for beings like Sunny, Nephis, and her.

Both physically and mentally, they were more or less ageless.

"I managed to heal most of her wounds. But her eye simply refuses to recover... it is as if it was never there. As if missing an eye is the natural state of her body, so restoring it goes beyond the concept of healing." Casting a gaze at her friend, Nephis gritted her teeth and said, her voice shaking with fury:

"I have no idea how he did that. I do not know how he prevented me from healing her remotely, either. Ah... he really prepared that ambush well."

Sunny frowned.

"But not well enough. Otherwise, Cassie would be missing both eyes right now."

Nephis looked at him with a hint of misery in her eyes, which made his heart ache a little, then nodded somberly.

"Yes."

She remained silent for a moment, then sighed and looked to Kai.

"Kai, can you ask one of the Fire Keepers to bring us water?"

She turned back to Cassie and brushed a few stray strands of bloodied hair away from her face.

"She shouldn't have to stay that way..."

Kai and Jet were there with them, as well. They had arrived with the second incarnation of Sunny from Ravenheart via the Dream Gate, and were now standing behind Nephis in grim silence.

When Kai left, she turned to Jet.

"What is the situation?"

Jet lingered for a moment.

"The news has already reached the waking world. We are suppressing the spread on the network, but we can't stop people from talking. The djinn is out of the bottle, Nephis... well, you must already know that. By tomorrow - two days at best, all of humanity will know that the Dreamspawn has returned. So, we can't cover it up. The best we can do is frame the story in a way that benefits us."

Nephis looked at her with a dark expression.

"Only we can't. Because he won't be sitting idly, either - he'll make sure to spread his own version of the story to cement his starting position. Then, he will start an information campaign to discredit us."

Jet pursed her lips.

"He might be a Supreme, but we still control the infrastructure. All the means of directing the flow of information are in our hands."

Sunny shook his head.

"No. The Dreamspawn himself is a means of controlling the flow of information. The most powerful one there is. He is a Supreme whose Aspect is all about controlling thoughts and emotions. We cannot prevent him from poisoning our people with his ideas."

He paused somberly.

"All we can do is inoculate them against the poison with ideas of our own."

'Maybe.'

Effie, who had been silent the entire time, finally spoke:

"This is not our area of expertise, though. Isn't it too arrogant, to think that we can beat that monster at his own game?" Sunny and Nephis both looked at her. Eventually, it was Nephis who spoke, her voice low:

"Arrogance has nothing to do with it. It's just that we have no other choice... we have been left with no other choice. So what's the point of cowering in fear?"

Effie grimaced.

"Can't we just lure him somewhere and turn him into a puddle of blood? Oh... and then feed that puddle to some Unholy horror. Even if he is immortal, that should keep him occupied for a while."

Sunny sighed.

"We can't. He is too cunning to walk into a trap - he is a human, after all, despite all his proclamations. And fighting humans is so much more difficult than fighting Nightmare Creatures. Even if we do manage to lure him away from human cities, though, it's... unclear whether we can defeat him in battle. Or rather, defeat him before he can escape."

Effie frowned.

"You killed Anvil and Ki Song alright."

Sunny shook his head.

"We had been preparing for that battle for years. We had usurped their Citadels, stolen the loyalty of their people, and attacked them unexpectedly when the power of their Domains was lower than ever..."

He paused for a moment, thinking how eerily that described what Asterion must have been planning.

Swallowing his unease, Sunny continued:

"...While they were already exhausted from fighting each other, no less. They had not even entertained the thought that we might attain natural Supremacy, either. But we did - by then, the outcome of the battle was already a moot point."

Kai had returned with a basin of water and a clean cloth. Nephis wetted the cloth and washed the blood off Cassie's face, speaking quietly:

"We are strong... much stronger than Asterion, most likely. But strength alone does not decide the outcome of battles. Do not make the mistake of underestimating him - he has been Supreme decades longer than we have, after all. He wields four Divine Lineages, as well: Heart God, War God, Storm God, and Beast God. He inherited the power of all four, no less."

Maybe that could explain some of his unexplainable powers.

Nephis sighed.

"It would have been good if we could join forces with the King of Nothing. But he made his unwillingness to ally with us clear - in fact, he completely isolated himself in the Hollow Mountains, avoiding all contact with humans."

A crooked grin twisted her lips.

"He must have known that humans would become a liability once the Dreamspawn returns. At best, they are hostages that he uses to manipulate his enemies. At worst, they are his willing thralls, infecting everyone who comes in contact with them with his disease."

Mordret had hidden himself in the mist of the Hollow Mountains, eventually cutting all contact with humanity. Of course, Sunny did not think that he was merely planning to hide from Asterion with his tail tucked... the bastard was definitely brewing his own plan.

He had to know how meaningless hiding from Asterion was, at the very least. Sooner or later, the insatiable monster would come for him, as well.

After meeting Asterion, Sunny could suddenly see where many facets of Mordret's personality had come from - some of his habits and mannerisms, even. One had been raised by the other, after all. It was amazing how Mordret suddenly seemed far less of an unhinged monster when compared to his former captor and guardian.

Who knew that he would seem sensible one day?

In any case, there was no point in expecting assistance from Mordret.

"We still can..."

Before he could finish the sentence, Nephis interrupted him by raising a hand.

In front of her, on the bloodied bed...

Cassie let out a quiet groan and then slowly opened her one remaining eye.

They should either stop hyping up asterion or just give up. Citatels and subjects were supposed to give power to sovereigns, but now they dont and the guy without them is more powerful. 2 vs 2 was easier because they were tired, but now 2 vs 1 is impossible. They are at the height of their power, but they act like they are the underdog again. You cant say that old sovereigns were too weak because they didnt have enough citadels, when you have all the citadels. Its simply insulting. Sunny's horse should be more powerful than asterion at this point.

The way I see it, that's exactly what he's going to be doing very soon. And these two can't do shit about it unless they either outsmart him with something unexpected or get ready for some sacrifices.

He is about to do that, it's been stated multiple times that sunny and neph are stronger than him literally the only problem is that he's in bastion, and even if they do kill him he's immortal he will just come back to rinse and repeat. There is genuinely not a single thing they can aside from what they've already done so far

Destroying his body should weaken him and delay the spread of his dominion, as well as mark him as an enemy of humanity, which would delay it even further.

Having fanatics causing sabotage and terrorism would also make humanity wary of Asterion's supposed ideal.

Asterion is a powerful enemy, but there are three sovereigns with divine aspects, dozens of saints, and hundreds of masters with unique and powerful aspects.

But Nephis's decision is to wait? Let her take care of humanity and release Sunny and Mordret to pursue Asterion; that would be more useful.

Even if she was to say that he is an enemy, people would ask questions and not everyone would take this as truth. And when some people would speculate that Nephis would treat other Sovereigns who arent from her ,,group" as enemies then Dreamspawn would use this to undermine her authority and trustworthines in the eyes of people.

Everything they would try to do would just be stalling. So the only way I see is to try growing stronger as fast as they can.

Her dominion would be weakened, but as long as she controlled the citadels and had the loyalty of the masters and saints, any setback her dominion suffered would be irrelevant.

Not to mention that Asterion just tried to kill Cassie and ripped out one of her eyes, how would ordinary humans react to that? What if, instead of letting her enemy deliver a monologue to all of humanity, Nephis said that he just tried to kill Cassie?

It's a bit stupid to see Sunny and Nephis afraid of a confrontation, considering that's their specialty.

They dont fear confrontation they dont want people to die from colateral damage and Asterion made fighting him in safe location impossible.

Sure they could tell everyone that he tried to kill Cassie but it wouldnt do them any good. People would start to feel fear because Nephis couldnt defend her own Saints and it would only play into Asterion hand because with their loyalty wavering he would make them into thralls easier.

His domain could spread even when he was on the moon him being "dead" is not going to help for however long that will last. Killing the guy, who has openly declared himself to be on humanity's side will not look good for Neph(it's already been stated and your logic doesn't even make sense lol), and it will just spread his domain even more on top of indirectly killing everyone in bastion which they don't want.

Doing a smear campaign will do the opposite, that's spreading his name even more. And those people will eventually become thralls and just outright refuse to do anymore.

Yeah, sending two supreme titans to kill him is totally gonna kill him for good just stfu✌️😭

They can't even set a trap for him either because he can legit read their minds, and he can run to anywhere in the dream world with the dream gate, they cannot do a single thing apart from stalling for time with Cassie being one foot in the grave.

Asterion's dominion spread even while he was on the moon, but it only affected ordinary people. He only started affecting the awoken and some Masters recently, meaning his aspect is strengthening, mainly because he has absolutely nothing to worry about; he does whatever he wants while Nephis and Sunny cower and try to plan a reaction.
They are facing a threat that will consume humanity, they are at war, but they continue to act as if Asterion were still on the moon and not living next door.
Can you conceive of Nephis letting the skinwalker live in Bastion? Why would it be different with an even greater threat?

Nephis's dominion wasn't absolute; from the beginning there were dissidents, but she had the loyalty of the vast majority of the Awoken, Masters, and practically all the Saints... and that's what she's losing with all this passivity.

"Ah, but the residents of Bastion will be killed in the confrontation"—what is more important to humanity, a few thousand humans or Cassie? "Ah, but Asterion can't be killed, ah, but he can escape anywhere" - aren't Sunny and Mordret the same person?

What would delay Asterion's plans more, having some puppets stolen or having a Supreme Titan chasing him? Now add another Supreme Titan who can be practically omniscient...

Asterion shouldn't be able to take a step on Earth without being seen by Mordret or Sunny, let alone set up an ambush and almost kill the most important person for human survival... and not only do it with impunity, but be generously rewarded.

So she still can't get rid of his domain then?? If he was able to come down to earth with the help of mundanes genuinely what is Neph having saints going to change?(it's also implied that he stayed there intentionally, and Tamar, rain and sunless were all infected before he even came to earth)💀💀 You keep complaining that Neph and sunny aren't doing anything, and not saying what they should do instead aside from killing asterion which will blatantly not work. It's like having a squatter in your house, you literally cannot get rid of them without doing. I don't remember skinwalker being able to wipe bastion off the map whenever it wanted, and skinwalker killed the originals soul and took their body, asterion only changes the way they think so they can be saved through Cassie. Skinwalker is more like mordret lol get your comparisons right💀

This changes what I've said, how exactly?

Bastions population is in the hundreds of millions gng fym a few thousand people💀 Making those kinds of sacrifices is literally what the old Supremes did. Neph and sunny overthrew them for a reason gng.

The puppets being stolen would unironically do more damage lol, his name has already spread enough far masters to be taken it's just a matter of time till saint are made thralls. And being in bastion is one of the reasons they don't just try to kill him lol, why would he leave lmao. He's not trying to hide anymore.

They can barely stay on earth for a couple hours a day. And even if they did catch him while he was coming down what would they do? Send him back? Lol

In theory, Sunny probably could end this war on his own lmfao. He could just genuinely kill every single person, have a stronger domain, and the Forgotten god never wakes up due to the nonexistent population. Then either use the death will or memories to expunge the infection/kill it. But they do not want to cause extinction events. Asterion does not represent a challenge of strength, but of complexity. This is why Sunny is saying fighting humans are so much worse, too much collateral and have the same advantages of intelligence.

I think you are mixing things. This fight is not about who can kill other as neph said if this is one on one they win but that won't be victory because someone who can leave in someone's else cannot be ever killed in perfect order they have to seal him but they don't know how.
If it was physical fight there's no one alive that can pose a threat to those two but this fight isn't about that. Only Cassie is can do something. Remember the 1st chapter of this arc everyone attack the ebony tower. Means they weren't able to stop asterion.

Place his full comment upside down in front of a mirror and read the reflection backwards, left to right bottom to top.
Follow the steps explicitly and once done correctly, you've successfuly have un-read it. Remember unread the whole thing.

I myself had a hard time unreaing my first novel. But now I can't even remember it. You'll never remember you've read it. You'll thank me later.
A word of caution though, if you happen to re-read it after, due to side effects of forgetting, then you're gonna start over the whole thing.

There is something that worries me. In Cassie's memories, she saw herself with Mordorette holed up in the Flying Tower while everyone literally surrounded them and prepared to kill them.
