Chapter 2766: A Bitter Reversal

By the time Effie and Sunny reached the Ivory Tower, the rest were already there. They had seen the unusually lively streets of Bastion on the way. The growing crowd of prominent champions of the Human Domain gathered on the pier of the Castle, waiting for a ferry to come and take them to the Ivory Island... where, without a doubt, representatives of the Immortal Flame clan would shine a light on the preposterous rumors quickly spreading across the world.

The rumors that Asterion, the Dreamspawn, was back from the dead and claiming his place as the third Sovereign of humanity.

'Damn it all.'

Things had gone much more smoothly when Mordret suddenly attained Supremacy. Now, everything was in chaos. The Fire Keepers were supposed to deal with the turmoil, but with one of their leaders gravely wounded and the other busy treating her wounds, they fell into inaction. None of them knew who Asterion was, anyway...

Because simply knowing about his existence had seemed perilous once.

And it was. Everyone either already knew or would soon know about him, though, and therefore everyone was already in danger.

"How is she?"

Cassie was laying on the bed in Neph's personal quarters on the highest floor of the Ivory Tower, while Nephis herself was kneeling beside her, soft light slowly disappearing from under her skin.

She gave Sunny a somber look.

He could see the answer himself. Some of Cassie's wounds seemed to have closed, but the gaping hole where her left eye had been remained exactly the same.

The bleeding had stopped, at least.

Her bloodied face looked incredibly pale in the bright sunlight pouring into the windows. As she lay there, vulnerable and unconscious, Cassie seemed younger than usual... no, actually, she finally looked her age. Not that age still held the same meaning for beings like Sunny, Nephis, and her.

Both physically and mentally, they were more or less ageless.

"I managed to heal most of her wounds. But her eye simply refuses to recover... it is as if it was never there. As if missing an eye is the natural state of her body, so restoring it goes beyond the concept of healing." Casting a gaze at her friend, Nephis gritted her teeth and said, her voice shaking with fury:

"I have no idea how he did that. I do not know how he prevented me from healing her remotely, either. Ah... he really prepared that ambush well."

Sunny frowned.

"But not well enough. Otherwise, Cassie would be missing both eyes right now."

Nephis looked at him with a hint of misery in her eyes, which made his heart ache a little, then nodded somberly.

"Yes."

She remained silent for a moment, then sighed and looked to Kai.

"Kai, can you ask one of the Fire Keepers to bring us water?"

She turned back to Cassie and brushed a few stray strands of bloodied hair away from her face.

"She shouldn't have to stay that way..."

Kai and Jet were there with them, as well. They had arrived with the second incarnation of Sunny from Ravenheart via the Dream Gate, and were now standing behind Nephis in grim silence.

When Kai left, she turned to Jet.

"What is the situation?"

Jet lingered for a moment.

"The news has already reached the waking world. We are suppressing the spread on the network, but we can't stop people from talking. The djinn is out of the bottle, Nephis... well, you must already know that. By tomorrow - two days at best, all of humanity will know that the Dreamspawn has returned. So, we can't cover it up. The best we can do is frame the story in a way that benefits us."

Nephis looked at her with a dark expression.

"Only we can't. Because he won't be sitting idly, either - he'll make sure to spread his own version of the story to cement his starting position. Then, he will start an information campaign to discredit us."

Jet pursed her lips.

"He might be a Supreme, but we still control the infrastructure. All the means of directing the flow of information are in our hands."

Sunny shook his head.

"No. The Dreamspawn himself is a means of controlling the flow of information. The most powerful one there is. He is a Supreme whose Aspect is all about controlling thoughts and emotions. We cannot prevent him from poisoning our people with his ideas."

He paused somberly.

"All we can do is inoculate them against the poison with ideas of our own."

'Maybe.'

Effie, who had been silent the entire time, finally spoke:

"This is not our area of expertise, though. Isn't it too arrogant, to think that we can beat that monster at his own game?" Sunny and Nephis both looked at her. Eventually, it was Nephis who spoke, her voice low:

"Arrogance has nothing to do with it. It's just that we have no other choice... we have been left with no other choice. So what's the point of cowering in fear?"

Effie grimaced.

"Can't we just lure him somewhere and turn him into a puddle of blood? Oh... and then feed that puddle to some Unholy horror. Even if he is immortal, that should keep him occupied for a while."

Sunny sighed.

"We can't. He is too cunning to walk into a trap - he is a human, after all, despite all his proclamations. And fighting humans is so much more difficult than fighting Nightmare Creatures. Even if we do manage to lure him away from human cities, though, it's... unclear whether we can defeat him in battle. Or rather, defeat him before he can escape."

Effie frowned.

"You killed Anvil and Ki Song alright."

Sunny shook his head.

"We had been preparing for that battle for years. We had usurped their Citadels, stolen the loyalty of their people, and attacked them unexpectedly when the power of their Domains was lower than ever..."

He paused for a moment, thinking how eerily that described what Asterion must have been planning.

Swallowing his unease, Sunny continued:

"...While they were already exhausted from fighting each other, no less. They had not even entertained the thought that we might attain natural Supremacy, either. But we did - by then, the outcome of the battle was already a moot point."

Kai had returned with a basin of water and a clean cloth. Nephis wetted the cloth and washed the blood off Cassie's face, speaking quietly:

"We are strong... much stronger than Asterion, most likely. But strength alone does not decide the outcome of battles. Do not make the mistake of underestimating him - he has been Supreme decades longer than we have, after all. He wields four Divine Lineages, as well: Heart God, War God, Storm God, and Beast God. He inherited the power of all four, no less."

Maybe that could explain some of his unexplainable powers.

Nephis sighed.

"It would have been good if we could join forces with the King of Nothing. But he made his unwillingness to ally with us clear - in fact, he completely isolated himself in the Hollow Mountains, avoiding all contact with humans."

A crooked grin twisted her lips.

"He must have known that humans would become a liability once the Dreamspawn returns. At best, they are hostages that he uses to manipulate his enemies. At worst, they are his willing thralls, infecting everyone who comes in contact with them with his disease."

Mordret had hidden himself in the mist of the Hollow Mountains, eventually cutting all contact with humanity. Of course, Sunny did not think that he was merely planning to hide from Asterion with his tail tucked... the bastard was definitely brewing his own plan.

He had to know how meaningless hiding from Asterion was, at the very least. Sooner or later, the insatiable monster would come for him, as well.

After meeting Asterion, Sunny could suddenly see where many facets of Mordret's personality had come from - some of his habits and mannerisms, even. One had been raised by the other, after all. It was amazing how Mordret suddenly seemed far less of an unhinged monster when compared to his former captor and guardian.

Who knew that he would seem sensible one day?

In any case, there was no point in expecting assistance from Mordret.

"We still can..."

Before he could finish the sentence, Nephis interrupted him by raising a hand.

In front of her, on the bloodied bed...

Cassie let out a quiet groan and then slowly opened her one remaining eye.

I think asterions mean concerns are 2 people sunny and Cassie. They way Asterion trapped and caged Cassie was too perfect for him not to be sure he could deal with her in a timely manner. Sunny's interference was either predicted to come to late to save her or he fell outside of calculations. Meaning he is a threat just like Cassie is to his plans moving forward. Notice in the chapter where he acknowledges nephis mordret and sunny, but when the talking starts he ignores sunny? He probably trying to hide how much of a threat he really see's sunny as. And when split his minds to hide from Asterion. Asterion picked up on that. Then probably figured out that those missing memories have to do with the actions of Cassie and the lord of shadows.

Bet Cassie is definitely going to either become supreme (soon) or, at the very least, share info on how to suppress or beat Asterion.

I think what we saw on the first chapters with Cassie reforming herself is her move to Supreme. I think they are all f#cked and she'll attain supremacy at the last minute and defeat Asterion. Probably by removing mankind from his control using her new Supreme powers then Sunny and Nephis will kick the shit out of him.

Say, isn't Cassie technically the most similar to Asterion in terms of Abilities? Couldn't she Mark every person, absorb Asterion Knowledge, then dump it into one sturdy bloke, drop them into the shadow world and be done with it? Bollocks I know, but a different angle wouldn't ya say?

My hypothesis: Sunny and Nephis will need to leave Cassie behind as the sole defender of humanity for an unknowable amount of time.

This is the reason why The Prince of Nothing says that this could've all been avoided had he been allowed to help at the beginning of the volume. Leaving a Trascendent to fight against a Supreme is stupid which is why Cassie is forced into that weird state she is at the beginning of this arc, probably attaining natural Supremacy. I assume this "not knowing who she is" episode happens soon after she tells Mordret that they haven't lost yet. They probably wouldn't allow Mordret to help because worse than having a Supreme who doesn't have humanity's best interest in their plans is having two of them. Mordret only ever helps them if he has some sort of ulterior motive behind and is also forced to cooperate out of having a common enemy. During the Third Nightmare he genuinely helped them clear it because that nightmare couldn't possibly be cleared without Nephis. However, during the Second Nightmare, he didn't try to help the cohort survive it, but instead wanted to clear it on his own. There's also the fact that from Mordret's Flaw we know he is literally incapable of feeling remorse or guilt, which means in his pursuit of beating Asterion he could very well plot to exterminate every single human being who knows of Asterion's existence to take Asterion's powers away and maybe seal him once the only ones who know of his existence are the Supremes left alive. Having no remorse makes Mordret akin to a misaligned AGI. It's not killing almost the entire human race because it's evil but simply because it's the most efficient way to accomplish the goal it was given. So it makes sense why they would only trust Cassie to hold the fort against Asterion until their return. Her powers counter his. (Though right now it may not seem so that's just because Asterion is Supreme) As for what Sunny and Nephis leave out to do there are three possibilities.

    Either
    A) They go find Sunny's last part of Weaver's Lineage in the Underworld,
    B) They go find Sunny's Fate on the real Tomb of Ariel, or
    C) Both.

I'm more inclined to believe it's both, because when Third Nightmare Sunny meets future Sunny, future Sunny claims he is neither sacred nor supreme. Perhaps this makes reference to the fact that completing Weaver's Lineage and reclaiming his fate allows him to be significantly stronger than a Supreme being yet weaker than a Sacred one.

But how will getting weaver's lineage help him fight an idea?

Same goes for getting his fate back.
Maybe [Fated] would help him but we can't bet on that. Although I think it won't be simple.

I find it almost impossible that Mordred doesn't want revenge on Asterion; he's resentful and probably doesn't want him as an spirit being after devouring humanity. The issue is the mess it will cause for the people affected in the background of the conflict, since for him the easiest way would be to simply kill everyone so that Asterion can't claim anyone.

This is my theory (according to cassie's first memory she saw : when she was with mordret in the ebony tower and all of humanity was ready to attack them ) :: when they are finally cornered by asterion, Sunny and Nephis in their last ditch attempt will go to tomb of ariel and maybe in there naturally or through a nightmare gate try to attain apotheosis ( maybe Sunny also tries to get shadow weave in there alongside attaining Apotheosis ) while they leave everything in the hand of Cassia, Effie, Kai, and Jet but in the end they couldn't stand against Asterion and all of humanity end up becoming thralls of Asterion and while all of this was happening the damage also reached to Mordret as well and finally Mordret or maybe Cassie convinced him to come together to face of against the whole of humanity who are the thralls of Asterion now ( I do not know what happens to other member of the cohort ) and while having a final battle with Asterion, Cassie ends up losing her mind which leads to her the state that she is in. - Now two things can happen ( &this is just a hypothesis) 1) Sunny & Nephis attain apotheosis and destroy Asterion, 2) Cassia attains supremacy and destroy Asterion, as she natural enemy of Asterion.

I don't think so, because the exact quote says:

"More than a hundred Saints. Thousands of Masters. Countless Awakened warriors... Seishan and her sisters were among them. So were the Saints of the House of Night, Sky Tide, Roan... even her own Fire Keepers. And their master, naturally."

The quote refers to Asterion as the master of all enemies, not specifically to the master of the Fire Keepers.

And a detail that went unnoticed is that Cassie and Mordred aren't the only ones left. She says there are still some humans in the Ebony Tower, although most belong to Mordred. The very fact that she names Seishan and Tyris as enemies, but says nothing about Jet, Kai, and Effie, already shows that they weren't controlled.

Theoretically, Sunny doesn't need apotheosis to defeat Asterion. All he needs is his true name so he can transform using shadow dance into a being that counters Asterion, while not forgetting who he is. He could transform into the madness of Kahett and completely wreck him.

He's definitely gonna need to go to Ariel's tomb and get his fate back. Also it would be cool if Weaver shows up (because it's Ariel's tomb) to help him defeat the Vile Thieving Bird.

Oh, I suppose Cassie was the one to kill AsterEggs. By becoming the sole catalyst of the forbidden knowledge (Asterion), Cassie could imprison him in her mind, where she can seal him in the confines of time and history. That's why Asterion wants her dead, because she is his nemesis. Indeed, when time becomes the mean to an enemy to expand, its own strength becomes its own weakness.

Indeed, this makes sense then. So, now is the time for Sunny to weave a spell that could imprison AsterEggs in Cassie. By doing that, she could become revered by those fanatics. By worshiping him, the knowledge would be converted into her own worship, and she could become a supreme after that. And that would help her to make apotheosis!

Ultimately, it comes back to how Mordret achieved supremacy. Even though Cassie is weaker, she doesn't need to eliminate Asterion's influence from the entire world at once.
She and Sunny began doing this by imprisoning Asterion's servants and rewriting their memories, only needing to redirect their 'faith' towards Cassie.

This must have scared him and motivated the attack on Cassie, as well as the fact that he revealed himself.

Thats good idea. It reminds me of the way to achieve Sequence 0 from Maruder pathway in LOTM (take someone elses place during their ritual of becoming a god). Cassie would put herself in place of Asterion in every memory of his thralls so that they would think that she is their master. Maybe she would shatter during this process and we have seen her try to reassemble herself from memories.

And so it would be similar to the way Mordret achieved his Supremacy - by challenging a being with similar powers but of higher rank.
