Chapter 2750: A Lesson in Patience

They walked back in silence. Sunny could simply whisk Rain away through the shadows, but she was not ready to return to the embrace of civilization just yet, so instead, they traveled through the ashen expanse of the hollowed out Hollows on foot.

It felt nice and nostalgic, reminding her of the long hikes back to Ravenheart they had often taken after her hunts. The pleasant sense of fatigue, the warm feeling of sharing her teacher's company, the pride and satisfaction of having slain a Nightmare Creature with her own mundane hands... Times had been so much simpler back then. Eventually, her brother stopped near the scorched remains of an ancient asura and gave it a little kick.

"Hmm. These ones are different from the asuras of Condemnation. I wonder what they were called"

He sighed.

"Sometimes I miss being infected by the Spell. Its whispers were quite convenient at times, for things like finding out what this city had been called or what kind of deity had ruled it once before becoming swallowed by Corruption"

Rain lingered for a moment.

"Asuras of Desolation. Tamar had investigated everything connected to the Seed quite thoroughly, so she learned how these abominations were called from a Saint who had slain one during the war. In fact, she tracked down everyone who had slain Nightmare Creatures in these ruins and convinced them to share their knowledge with her."

She looked at her brother intently.

"Things like the details of local abominations, Memory descriptions, scouting reports from both armies... and so on. But you already knew that, considering that you had helped her with the investigation — to increase her chances of becoming a Master."

Sunny smiled.

"Well. She is a subject of my Domain, after all"

Rain studied him for a few moments, then sighed and looked away.

"I wonder when I'll become a Master, as well."

Her voice was full of wistfulness.

Sunny hesitated for a short while, then raised an eyebrow.

"I see that arrogance runs in our blood."

Shaking his head, he turned away from the fallen Asura of Desolation and continued walking.

"I understand how you feel. It must be a bitter pill to swallow, being left behind by your friends. However, you mustn't be impatient. It has not even been two years since you Awakened and unsealed your Aspect. People used to spend a decade preparing to challenge the Second Nightmare... things move a bit faster these days, but two years is still far too fast."

He glanced at her.

"And that's for the carriers of the Nightmare Spell, who already walk the Path of Ascension at an astonishing speed due to its cruel gifts. You are doing things properly, unlike them. So, it is only natural that things are going to take longer for you."

Rain smiled bitterly.

She followed him in silence for a while, then said:

"You say that I must be patient, but at the same time, you pushed Tamar to enter the Seed earlier than she had planned."

Sunny shrugged.

"I wouldn't have if I thought that she was not ready."

Rain glanced at his back and frowned slightly.

She hesitated a little before speaking again.

"But that is not everything there is to it, is it? You hide it well, but I can tell... you are worried."

Sunny gave her an inscrutable look.

Eventually, he averted his eyes.

"Yes, there's more to it. I might have been inclined to believe that it would be good for your friends to be away for a while." Rain's frown deepened.

"So you are worried, after all."

She remained silent for a while, then said in a somber tone:

"I am not sure that I want to know what can make a Supreme nervous"

Sunny grinned.

"Oh, a great number of things. But I am already worried enough for the both of us, so you don't have to feel worried as well."

Rain looked at him cautiously.

"Or you can share your worries and see if doing that would alleviate some of them."

He chuckled.

Sunny continued to walk across the ash in silence for a while, then said:

"It's just a new enemy. Well, rather, an old enemy — the newest old enemy I've had. That enemy is a tricky one, too... he's unlike anyone I've faced. He is hidden in the shadows, while we are out in the open. Quite ironic, isn't it? He also doesn't have anything to lose, while we stand to lose everything. All of it makes me uncomfortable."

He winced, and then added in a low tone: "We recently encountered an enemy that we couldn't kill. And now, we are up against an enemy that we cannot even fight. How can one win a war if the enemy refuses to engage in battle?"

Rain scrunched up her face, trying to discern what he was talking about.

Her brother was a demigod, so it was not always easy to understand his point of view. Demigods had different problems from mortals like her, after all.

"So, it's like... guerilla warfare?"

Sunny smiled.

"Come to think of it, yes. It's somewhat like that." Rain fell into a thoughtful silence.

After a while, she said:

"From what I remember from school, the best way to counter guerrilla warfare is to destroy the enemy's source of power — which is usually founded in the support of the local population. Once you get the population on your side, the enemy won't be able to replenish their numbers, move freely, or hide among the people. Then, you can eradicate the insurgents through a series of targeted offensive operations. Something like that."

Sunny stared at her in bafflement.

"Just what are they teaching you in schools? Why would they teach kids how to counter guerrilla warfare and suppress insurgencies?"

Rain blinked a couple of times.

"What else would they teach us? All kinds of situations are possible in the First Nightmare. So, children are taught how to handle various types of conflict effectively — well, at least we were in my school. Granted, it was quite an elite establishment."

Sunny kept staring at her for a bit more, then looked away and shook his head.

"Actually, what you just said made me worry even more."

He paused for a moment.

"Because it sounds suspiciously like what that bastard is trying to do to us!" Rain scoffed.

'Who is he talking about?'

The public was buzzing with rumors about the evil deeds of the King of Nothing, but Rain knew that he couldn't be the enemy Sunny had mentioned. After all, she was a member of the Shadow Clan, too. So, she knew who was behind the seemingly endless string of clandestine arrests — or, simply put, kidnappings.

Come to think of it, she had been meaning to ask her brother about what was up with that.

Surely, there had to be a good reason.

Rain had almost asked the question when her brother suddenly froze. He remained motionless for a short while, and even though Rain could only see his back, she could tell that his entire demeanor had changed abruptly.

None of his usual carefree attitude remained, replaced instead by tension and sharp focus... and a hint of anxiety, as well.

Rain could not help but tense up, too. "What is it?"

Sunny turned to her slowly, his face a few shades paler than usual. His eyes were cold and dark.

"It's Cassie."

Even his voice sounded like it was brimming with cold darkness, and a chilling wind suddenly blew across the Hollows, making Rain shudder.

The presence of the Sovereign of Death spread like a frigid tide, drowning the ashen expanse around them.

Sunny added in an even tone:

"I just received a message from her. I think... it was a call for help."

After reading the chapters in which Weaver appeared, especially chapter 2729 and some chapters that talk about the Flame of Desire... I formed a theory... We know that the gods died... Their flames should have returned to the Great Flame, but this did not happen. Rather, the flame is currently almost dying... This makes me believe that it is being stored... I think this is the purpose of the Nightmare Spell... Weaver killed the gods and activated the Nightmare Spell with them, but the Nightmare Spell only uses part of the flame. But now you might be wondering what it does with the rest, right? Yes, it's ascension... When the dreamer defeats the nightmare, they take a portion of the flame, which merges with their own, allowing them to ascend and approach divinity... You might wonder what happens to those who die within the nightmare... Yes, I also believe that the nightmare spell combines their flame with the other flames until it is given to someone else who defeats the nightmare... I think Weaver saw that the gods had become weaker because their flames were divided among the creatures they spawned... So he reversed the process, gathering the flames to give them back to one person... or a smaller group of people... I apologize for the poor language... but please share your opinions with me

It is nice theory but what about humans who ascended naturally? We know that humans where born from the sparks of the Desire and yet they could go up through Path of Ascention. Did they take the Flame from somewhere or did it grow because of their own desires? True, the gods used their Flame to create different forms of life but humans were not one of them. But then again maybe the Flame will just burn out one day because even though the Flame came from Desire at one point, it didnt exist all the time - it is not absolute and everlasting. What I can see happening is that the Spell holds the Flame of the gods and uses it to hasten the ascension - it adds fuel? to the sparks of Flame which already are in humans.

Perhaps this is how those who ascend with the help of a spell have more advantages, it's just enough to remember how long it takes to get to the highest rank naturally. Not to mention the sacred.

Humans who go through path of ascension can only ascens upto certain level bcz there sparks of flame given from gods only amounts to that much and that's the reason why a human can never become a deity/god who walk through path of ascension.

Well, humans were born from the sparks of Flame, they weren't given the sparks by the gods. But maybe there was a limit to their growth because of their potential or something like that.

Yes, perhaps I didn't explain it well... The Nightmare Spell uses the Flame of the Goddess to accelerate the ascent to the next level, or to add it to the original flame, or something like that... and that's what makes the Nightmare Challenge the fastest way to the next level... As for the normal ascent, it was mentioned that they must fight beings stronger than themselves and train hard... perhaps their flame will grow in this way..
The extinguishing of the flame is related to corruption... The flame doesn't go out, it simply becomes corrupted... The gods themselves weren't corrupt, but their subjects began to become corrupt, and so the flame weakened, and this continued... I think this is what's happening.

I believe that the idea of emptiness being corruptible is just another lie of the gods. Emptiness came first, so it's the natural course of events. The flame of desire is nothing more than nourishment for the beings of emptiness, and this is not the first flame, nor will it be the last. Perhaps even the angels are surviving beings of a flame that has already been extinguished or consumed.

    1122, nothing said about mask

"I have not known that you've built a tomb, nor have I ever seen it. How would I know to admire it? I just happened to be here by chance. Now that I've seen it, my heart is untouched. I feel nothing."

"But you seem to feel too much, Demon of Dread. Your face is unsightly. You are smiling, but there are tears streaming from your eyes. Why?"

"It seems to me that you already did. And you already are." (about the reason for building Ariel's tomb)

"...You wanted to be free of the truth, so you didn't deserve it."

    2321, with mask

'Brother, my brother. Why are you hiding inside this hideous corpse?'

'My brother knows what everyone fears, and therefore, he knows everyone's truth. However, I know no fear. What then is my truth?'

'I thought I'd offer you to play a game.'

'A game of death, naturally. Whoever wins will give the other one a truth. And if I lose, I will allow myself to be destroyed.'

'Do you know how fate can be broken, brother?'

'That is what I wish to learn.'

    2410, with mask

"Look at you. you're dying. How pitiful. How disappointing. Is this all you are capable of? Is this all you are? You are so easy, so weak. How dare you be so weak, my adversary?"

"Do you even remember your own name, pathetic thing?"

"Did you? Did you really think that someone like you could have killed me? That you are qualified to kill me? Me, the Demon of Fate?"

"Well, perhaps you did, possibly you are, maybe you will. That is your fate, after all, and you are Fated. So, tell me."

".who gave you permission to die? You are not allowed to die yet, wretch. You and I are not done yet, so even if all existence ends, you must remember your fate. You must remember me."

"You can forget everything else, everyone else - you can even forget your own name. But don't you dare forget the name of Weaver, the Demon of Fate. We must see each other again, you and I. So. come find me in the Shadow Realm. Come and see if someone like you can really kill Weaver. Then, after you've learned the true meaning of despair. then, I'll allow you to die, Orphne of the Nine."

    "That's better!"

"Watch well then, epigone. Let me show you. how gods die."

Shadow realm, mask is on but almost broken

"Fools. all of them, such fools."

    "Now. One final trick."

"You." ".You are just in time." (to Slayer)

“Who are you to call on us, brother? Who are you to challenge fate? We have heard you call and refuse it. We shall not be a part of the war that you wage."

      "...We have never met before."

"You must really be mad. Are you really pleading for truth from the master of lies?"

      No mask

"Have you heard? My brother, the Prince of the Underworld, has broken one of the divine tenets. He has encroached on the purview of the gods and created a race of living beings to settle his lightless lands. No one but the gods had been able to create life before, but now, the Demon of Destiny created life as well... we daemons are inclined to perform impossible feats, are we not?"

“Because I am known to appreciate deceit, and this is a brilliant lie”

"No one can create life, Beast of Twilight. Not even the gods. All they can do is reshape it — that is what Nether has done, as well, to create the Stone Saints."

"It's the same old story, from before the dawn of time. The seven gods were born from the Flame of Desire, just like the seven daemons were born from the Forgotten God. You humans were born from stray sparks. How were all the creatures that the gods created born, then? Where did the sparks that gave them life come from?"

"All life comes from the Flame of Desire, in the end. When the gods were creating the first living beings, they merely tore pieces of themselves and used them to breathe life into their creations... just like the Forgotten God did to breathe life into us. My brother, the Demon of Destiny, was the one to fathom that truth — so, he took sparks of his own flame and placed them into his own creations. That was how the Stone Saints came to be."

“That is why Sun God cannot kill Hope. That is also why the gods have grown small and feeble over the ages, having spent their flame to populate all the realms."

“What will happen if she dies, Beast of Twilight? The Shadow Realm cannot contain us, daemons. Death cannot swallow us — he had already tried, and failed. That is because we've never been truly alive, to begin with. We are mere manifestations of a greater flame, and even if we are entirely destroyed, the sparks that give us life will simply return to their source. To the Forgotten God."

“And make Forgotten God complete. Was that what you wanted to ask me, Beast of Twilight? Is that why you carved your heart out under the full moon?"

      2730, no mask

“Even I do not presume to know the mind of the gods. Mercy, cruelty, love, indifference... the gods are too vast and too great to contain only one emotion, bear only one desire, and harbor only one intent."

“Ah, but I can tell you this, Beast of Twilight. You truly are far too arrogant for a mortal man. Did you really think that seven Transcendent men can contain a daemon? Did you really think that seven human lives are enough to bind the Demon of Desire? Fool... it was your endless desire to keep her bound that had built the walls of her prison and became her chains, not your unending lives."

"But now you desire for me to help you bring those walls down? You offer me your worthless heart and beg me to help you defy the gods? Do you even know what you are asking of me, Beast of Twilight?"

“In all of Kingdom of Hope? You only see what your burden allows you to see, Beast of Twilight. This land, these chains, and the quiet despair of those who naively surrendered their deaths. You only think about what the liberation of Hope will mean to you, and only fear the desires that consume mortal men. But my burden is far greater, and therefore, I see far more. I see it all”

"I see a beginning. A beginning of the end..."

“What can you give me if you're intending to die? Do not think me a fool, Beast of Twilight. Do not hope that death will let you escape a debt owed to the Demon of Fate." She pointed at him with a clawed finger. “Yes, I shall help you break the chains of Hope. Yes, I shall help you defy the will of the gods. But the price I demand is your life, not your death. Even if you long for the mercy of death, I will curse you to live. I will curse you to live, to hope... and to serve me. You and the one in the north both."

“Beast of Twilight, do not call upon the moon. That is not your name anymore, and you do not belong to the gods anymore. You belong to me now... now, you shall only call the name of Weaver."

And if hecan onlt tell truth, then after wearing the mask,he should only be able to tell truth, so all we know about him and all things he said are lie, including him being "daemon of fate, the first son of god"

I feel like daemons' flaws are one of the most unexplored areas of the lore. Because while they weren't exactly born as gods (whose flaw are daemons) nor are they of the flame, they walked a small path of ascension from sacred to divine. So it's extremely curious as to what their flaw might be, because it's probably somewhere between humans' personality-based ones and gods' more "universe-level" type of flaws. Alas, we have basically nothing except for possibly desire to sire off-springs despite the prohibition.

From what I understand, the Spark of the Gods has become so weak that it can no longer restrain or kill demons. Following the logic of "the big flame consumes the small flame," I can understand how the Weaver bloodline can devour the bloodlines of the gods. Perhaps Asterion uses the same method (as if he is a descendant of the Dream God—born in the Dreamworld in a cult that worships the Dreamworld).
I didn't understand anything else. I mean, when did there become seven Weavers (that's what I understood from the context), and also, does he have multiple personalities like Mordoret?!

There is perhaps a (difficult) way to finish asterion in a direct physical fight ( and of will) .
Sunny lulled a cursed a cursed abomination to sleep once which he used as a little surprise gift to Mordret when he invaded bastion.
If i remember well, its name was Abjuration. The interesting thing was its ability /BAN things ( like entire concepts ). It was stated that Abjuration could /ban the very faith of neph's followersif he won the contest of will . This means that he is very well able to /ban Asterion as a concept, quite the counter if i may say so myself.... but there is a problem.... he is dead, and not by sunny.
It may not be as irreversible as we think, in fact i can think of 2 options:
    - 1) search for his shadow in the shadow realm, quite unlikely but still possible ( slayer did stay there a lot... so maybe he didnt get chomped by something else )

-2) easier but quite risky: Sunny can copy abjuration ability as he did with the stone saint against the big moth of doubt... its risky because he might just go berzerk thinking he is actually abjuration XD
