Chapter 2732: Quiet Plague

Sunny walked across the desolate floor of the factory, his expression dim.

He felt bitter.

It was one thing to encounter an enemy who used his own strength against him. An insidious and cunning enemy — one different from both the malevolent Nightmare Creatures whom Sunny had slain in the past and from the callous humans whom he had brought down from their tainted thrones.

However, what really filled him with distaste was that they had been cautious and vigilant, yet still ended up being blindsided by Asterion.

Sunny and Nephis had known that the third Sovereign would become a dire adversary immediately after ending the Godgrave War. Even when they had been building a new world order and learning how to guide humanity in its days of existential crisis, they spared time and energy to prepare for the eventual return of the Dreamspawn. They committed vast resources to searching for the few pieces of information about him that Anvil and Ki Song had failed to erase. They had created a network of informants across both worlds to watch for the signs of his emergence. They rushed to master their new powers as Supremes and grow stronger, so that no enemy of the same Rank could threaten what they had built.

But all their preparations had turned out to be woefully insufficient, because now that the new threat was finally starting to reveal itself, there was precious little they could do to stop it.

The Shadow Clan and Cassie had identified all the cells of Asterion's newly initiated followers, but eradicating them was not an option. Even if it were, it would serve no purpose, since too many people outside the small groups of thoroughly infected were already aware of his name.

Worst of all, Sunny did not even know what they could have done differently if they had discovered the spreading corruption sooner.

He could not help but feel infuriatingly powerless.

Sunny did not experience fear often these days, but Asterion did make him feel an unpleasant sense of apprehension.

One of the most threatening things about the Dreamspawn, meanwhile, was that they still knew very little about him, even to this day.

And it was very much by design.

Their investigations had borne some fruit in the past month. Old Jest knew a bit, even if his trustworthiness was in question. Morgan had contributed a few crumbs of information, as well. The most important piece of knowledge — and the most unnerving too — unexpectedly came from Seishan.

Seishan, who had inherited some of Ki Song's legacy, revealed to them why the Sovereigns chose to seal Asterion on the moon instead of simply killing him.

It was not because they were wary of facing him in battle.

Rather, it was because Asterion could not be killed.

‘That devious bastard...’

The Dreamspawn was not technically immortal. However, he had become a unique existence as he climbed the Path of Ascension — a being who was more so an idea than a creature of flesh and blood. A demon of thought, rather than hellfire and brimstone.

For as long as the idea of Asterion dwelled in human minds, he could not be destroyed. Therefore, to kill him, all one had to do was kill everyone who carried the knowledge of the Dreamspawn in their minds.

Therein lay the problem, though.

Anvil and Ki Song had been the carriers of the knowledge about Asterion, as well. So, the only way for them to kill him was to kill themselves first, or at least find a way to erase all information about him from their own minds.

However, if they erased the memories of Asterion from their minds, they would forget why they needed to kill him, in the first place. They would forget how to kill him, too.

Driven into a dead end by that paradox, the best they had managed to do was trap him on the Moon by culling those who composed his eerie Domain, and continuing to suppress his influence from spreading over the decades.

That was a valuable piece of information, indeed, even if it did nothing to assuage Sunny's worries. If anything, he grew more and more despondent the more they learned about Asterion.

They were still lacking one of the most important pieces of knowledge about the Dreamspawn, though.

It was the knowledge of what, exactly, the threat of his spreading name was.

Up until now, all the people infected by the knowledge of Asterion — those they had managed to identify, at least — were only showing one symptom of the mental disease. They were all helping that knowledge spread further.

The infected did not kill, did not rob, and did not harm the Human Domain in any way. They did not seek to undermine the Immortal Flame clan or disturb the current balance of power. By all accounts, they were still upstanding citizens... if anything, those who were affected deeper were more selfless and altruistic than an average person.

There seemed to be no purpose to the spreading infection except for the growth itself.

The most eerie part of the quickly escalating crisis was how mundane and utterly normal everything seemed.

Of course, Sunny did not believe for a second that things would continue the same way. He did not need to be connected to the great tapestry of fate and possess an uncanny intuition to know that there was some kind of sinister purpose behind Asterion's attempts to propagate his name as far and wide as possible.

They just did not know what the purpose was.

Today, however... today, they could find out — or at least start to understand the mechanisms of how that purpose was going to be accomplished.

Sunny stopped near an elevator door, where aragtag team of Shadow Clan agents was resting on concrete blocks. He looked at them intently, then asked:

“How is the prisoner?"

One of them — June, was it? — offered him a pale smile.

“He is in top shape, boss. Everything went smoothly... it was eerily smooth, actually. There was no resistance at all."

Sunny frowned.

"Still, good job"

Leaving the agents behind, he entered the elevator.

Today, they were finally going to interrogate a person who had not simply been infected by the Dreamspawn's name.

They were going to interrogate an actual subject of Asterion's Domain.

Now that I stopped to think about it, why doesn’t Sunny create an item for Cassie that grants vision, with the drawback being that it can only be used by a blind person lol. But anyway, let’s stick to the script

Won’t work. He’s not at the level to make an enchantment to reverse a flaw. Only weaver has done something like that but who knows he might end up doing out later on

Her flaw, like most of them, help further develop their aspect powers.
For example, if Cassie has an artifact to see, she wouldn't need to mark others and see from their eyes. Im sure there's no need to explain further how Mordred and Nemphis flaws help improve their aspects.
      7
Their flaws corelate with aspect. If she tried using a seeing aid, her flaw would be nullified and useless because it was bypassed, that in turn will also weaken her aspect as well.

    Honestly, aster is pretty stupid.

At this point, he's become nearly a concept, so all he has to do is hope into a fifth nightmare, infect the residents, and make the entire nightmare inhabitants his puppets lol.

Even if he encounter sacred gods in the nightmare, he can slim them out by taking out their domains.

How can he hop into the 5th nightmare. The dude barely has a domain right now lol. We don't even know how the 5th nightmare works. Would the people he infected in the waking world would still give him power while he is in the nightmare or does he basically have no domain in the 5th nightmare because he can't carry his domain with him like mordret or sunny.

It makes me wonder how it's going to be like for Nephis whether she has to build up her domain in the 5th nightmare because there is no one feeling longing for her at the start

That's not how it works; he's strong against enemies who care about humans.

If he were to fight a sacred or profane nightmare creature that doesn't care about simply destroying everything, he'd be screwed, not to mention Mordret, who also doesn't care about humanity.

This is in addition to the possibility of powers that counter him, besides his flaw.

You think if the gods are alive in the nightmares they'd hesitate to wipe out an entire civilisation?
It would also be temporary at best... The main conflict will either be resolved or not and then it ends.

Tomb of arial maybe. but who would want to spend eternity there?

There are two ways to kill Asterion then.
Scour the memory of his name from every living thing, then kill him.
    or
Repeat what happened to Sunny, cut him out of the tapestry of fate, then Sunny kills Asterion since he's also fate-less and will remember the enemy's existence.

      That's actually genius.

You either need to bring aster to the VTB or have sunny kill VTB and use it's shade to steal aster fate.

sunny literally explains this its a paradox. you cant kill him because you need to erase his name and who he is from not just others but your memory too. so you'll be sitting there wondering what the heck you were even doing.

          That's a good question :P
But Cassie can remove memories, or even fabricate them entirely.
And. the cohort, Rain etc. still know fateless Sunny, they just think he's a different person.
So Cassie just has to edit Sunny's memories to not include Asterion's name, remove his fate and kill him before he starts spreading it again.

OoohH!!! That is a really cool theory!!!
I would love to see this happen it would be really cool.

I feel like Asterion is ultimately going get erased by Cassie though since g3 seems to be setting her up as the focus of the comming chapters. Maybe Sunny isn't immune to forgetting someone who looses their fate but Cassie gains the ability to preserve her memories once she attains supremacy. Then Sunny as Weaver's number 1 disciple can take the role of stealing Asterion's fate (maybe using the shadow of the vile thieving bird?) and Cassie can finish Asterion off as the sole person capable of remembering why he must die?

I think cassie is just doing that right now, erasing the memory of asterion from everyone on the world and in that ascending. Similar to how mordret became suprem. And if somewhere in this arc/fight anyone else also ascends, than mc and gf can go to tomb of Ariel. And we probably will see most of the war and everything about asterion arc only in memory’s. Btw I don’t think we will see noctis for a long while

Is he trying to enter Apostheosis? To make himself Sacred, he has be to be anchored into the reality of humans by remember him, to sacralize him somewhat. In that way, he can become a demi god.

I don't think that's how to become a god. (Sacred)

Eurys said one has to abandon his humanity to even begin attempting the ascension (meaning the cultivation process only starts after you lose your humanity), aster already has that.

But you might actually be right, because as we know, sacred/cursed creatures embody concepts and aster is nearly a concept.

Theory: they use Nothing to kill him as it has existence erasure so he's existence can be erased and that creature of nothing can then out hax him and physically kill his body as well. So get a creature made of nothing that is of the cursed demon or higher rank and it should be capable of killing him.

There are two problems with that though,

One is it's going to be extremely super duper hard to pin him down and capture a being of nothingness and have them fight it out with everything going to plan.

Secondly is as Sunny has said, he is more of a concept right now than a actual person for a being of nothingness to erase him entirely, it would have to erase his domain which is the plague that is spreading through a lot of humanity, so it would either have to kill the humans, or contest against The sovereign himself Plus all of the different humans who are serving under him

The whole power system of SS as a whole is strange there exists some creatures of nothing( or just beings of higher class) that can for sure bypass his hax concept erasure is very well possible and honestly I think when they get shadow bond Sunny might be able to use the power of death to potentially erase him I mean it's death

but the way the plot is going it's most likely gonna be a Cassie becoming supreme and erasing his presence from all humans along with using her insane memory manipulation to somehow bypass his invincibility maybe she'll use a piece of paper to remind her to kill a guy in a space suit or give it to sunny to end the bastard I do like the idea that nothing will be key in ending him though I mean even the god's feared it.

It might also be safe to say anything of divine rank is erasing him from existence regardless of his hax that might include all people dying too but who knows. We know the demon that neph killed literally refused that concepts effected him. Somehow the guy is getting outhaxxed whether thats against a sacred shadow bond amped sunny or a sovereign cassie mind fighting asterion and ripping his influence out of everyones mind.

This whole thing is strange though does he even have a physical body then? Does he infinitely revive even if sunny rips his spine out can sunny just throw him into the shadow realm and let the corrupted divine shadows that hunt for human souls outhax him? I don't know we don't know enough yet

I imagine it's an Amon situation; body hopper, body morphing and identity theft ultimately being "Him"

As for Divine Beings bypassing his concepts to kill? Really likely for everyone involved with His name to die, there were consequences for Humanity at large if Nephis allowed herself to die while fighting that abomination whilst connected to humanity so really possible

His "physical body" shouldn't matter since he's a concept, I imagine it'd matter if that "body" was the sole holder of his concept than it'd be dire then.

Shadow Realm doing him in? Honestly, unless Shadow God personally took care of his "concept" the Shadow Realm's passive annihilation wouldn't be enough. I can see Asterion surviving that

          Tricky
