Chapter 2732: Quiet Plague

Sunny walked across the desolate floor of the factory, his expression dim.

He felt bitter.

It was one thing to encounter an enemy who used his own strength against him. An insidious and cunning enemy — one different from both the malevolent Nightmare Creatures whom Sunny had slain in the past and from the callous humans whom he had brought down from their tainted thrones.

However, what really filled him with distaste was that they had been cautious and vigilant, yet still ended up being blindsided by Asterion.

Sunny and Nephis had known that the third Sovereign would become a dire adversary immediately after ending the Godgrave War. Even when they had been building a new world order and learning how to guide humanity in its days of existential crisis, they spared time and energy to prepare for the eventual return of the Dreamspawn. They committed vast resources to searching for the few pieces of information about him that Anvil and Ki Song had failed to erase. They had created a network of informants across both worlds to watch for the signs of his emergence. They rushed to master their new powers as Supremes and grow stronger, so that no enemy of the same Rank could threaten what they had built.

But all their preparations had turned out to be woefully insufficient, because now that the new threat was finally starting to reveal itself, there was precious little they could do to stop it.

The Shadow Clan and Cassie had identified all the cells of Asterion's newly initiated followers, but eradicating them was not an option. Even if it were, it would serve no purpose, since too many people outside the small groups of thoroughly infected were already aware of his name.

Worst of all, Sunny did not even know what they could have done differently if they had discovered the spreading corruption sooner.

He could not help but feel infuriatingly powerless.

Sunny did not experience fear often these days, but Asterion did make him feel an unpleasant sense of apprehension.

One of the most threatening things about the Dreamspawn, meanwhile, was that they still knew very little about him, even to this day.

And it was very much by design.

Their investigations had borne some fruit in the past month. Old Jest knew a bit, even if his trustworthiness was in question. Morgan had contributed a few crumbs of information, as well. The most important piece of knowledge — and the most unnerving too — unexpectedly came from Seishan.

Seishan, who had inherited some of Ki Song's legacy, revealed to them why the Sovereigns chose to seal Asterion on the moon instead of simply killing him.

It was not because they were wary of facing him in battle.

Rather, it was because Asterion could not be killed.

‘That devious bastard...’

The Dreamspawn was not technically immortal. However, he had become a unique existence as he climbed the Path of Ascension — a being who was more so an idea than a creature of flesh and blood. A demon of thought, rather than hellfire and brimstone.

For as long as the idea of Asterion dwelled in human minds, he could not be destroyed. Therefore, to kill him, all one had to do was kill everyone who carried the knowledge of the Dreamspawn in their minds.

Therein lay the problem, though.

Anvil and Ki Song had been the carriers of the knowledge about Asterion, as well. So, the only way for them to kill him was to kill themselves first, or at least find a way to erase all information about him from their own minds.

However, if they erased the memories of Asterion from their minds, they would forget why they needed to kill him, in the first place. They would forget how to kill him, too.

Driven into a dead end by that paradox, the best they had managed to do was trap him on the Moon by culling those who composed his eerie Domain, and continuing to suppress his influence from spreading over the decades.

That was a valuable piece of information, indeed, even if it did nothing to assuage Sunny's worries. If anything, he grew more and more despondent the more they learned about Asterion.

They were still lacking one of the most important pieces of knowledge about the Dreamspawn, though.

It was the knowledge of what, exactly, the threat of his spreading name was.

Up until now, all the people infected by the knowledge of Asterion — those they had managed to identify, at least — were only showing one symptom of the mental disease. They were all helping that knowledge spread further.

The infected did not kill, did not rob, and did not harm the Human Domain in any way. They did not seek to undermine the Immortal Flame clan or disturb the current balance of power. By all accounts, they were still upstanding citizens... if anything, those who were affected deeper were more selfless and altruistic than an average person.

There seemed to be no purpose to the spreading infection except for the growth itself.

The most eerie part of the quickly escalating crisis was how mundane and utterly normal everything seemed.

Of course, Sunny did not believe for a second that things would continue the same way. He did not need to be connected to the great tapestry of fate and possess an uncanny intuition to know that there was some kind of sinister purpose behind Asterion's attempts to propagate his name as far and wide as possible.

They just did not know what the purpose was.

Today, however... today, they could find out — or at least start to understand the mechanisms of how that purpose was going to be accomplished.

Sunny stopped near an elevator door, where aragtag team of Shadow Clan agents was resting on concrete blocks. He looked at them intently, then asked:

“How is the prisoner?"

One of them — June, was it? — offered him a pale smile.

“He is in top shape, boss. Everything went smoothly... it was eerily smooth, actually. There was no resistance at all."

Sunny frowned.

"Still, good job"

Leaving the agents behind, he entered the elevator.

Today, they were finally going to interrogate a person who had not simply been infected by the Dreamspawn's name.

They were going to interrogate an actual subject of Asterion's Domain.

Hey, I have a simple doubt
Asterion also felt the pressure of earth pushing him out and he escaped before sunny came, but to where?
Does he have a separate realm or is he hiding in different realm's like boston or ravenheart or other?
And also if Cassie becomes supreme and erases memory of asterion from every single person living in two world, will the effect of asterion will be decreased? If not for defeating. U know supremecy can grant u abilitiy and expand your powers.

Tbh....if Asterion had waited another 50 chapters, I am pretty sure that Sunny would have succeeded Weaver's legacy completely and directly ascending to become Sacred. He would be a deamon in all but fate, perhaps if he waited another 150 chapters, he would be facing the newly born Deamon of Fate who would be a step or two from being DIVINE.

with how garbage the pacing has been after antarctica it would take another 100-150 chapters to get the shadow weave since the author cant just make Sunny go and get these alone with all incarnations.

Objectively, the only arc I did not enjoy as much as all the rest was the Mirror World one of the Deamon of Imagination. It was a bit sad that in the realm of imagination what we got was a rather realistic parody of what the real world is. I also think that the arc with the underwater city of the Deamon of Repose felt somewhat rushed...there were interesting things that could have been explored:
        - How did the soul of Kanakh kill the abominations controlled by the Flesh of Kanakh
        - How did the madness of Kanakh deal silently with all of those abominations
        - All wonders and things that could have been found thorough the city, it was very cursory glanced over, it would have been significantly preferable if they did conquer the city and took it out of the ocean since it could double as a space ship as well. Also, we did not even learn if the city itself was designated by the Nightmare spell as a citadel.
        - Also I am a bit muddled on the Flesh of Kanakh, not a single fragment of Kanakh should be able to reach the Sacred/Cursed realm, meaning that all of them should be capped at being Supreme Titans at best, yet both Sunny and Nephis together cannot kill a newly born Great Titan? Worse yet that abomination will in all probability survive the crushing depths the city will be torn apart from. It seems like a slight inconsistency since Sunny with 1/7 of his strength has killed Cursed Devils and Tyrants.
        - Going with all incarnations to different sites would not be the great idea you might think it is. I think the last arc showed that perfectly. Sunny needed 5 of his incarnations to simply stand a chance. While the remaining two were stations in Bastion and Ravenheart in case something happens since Nephis needed to come bail them out. It was also a dumb idea to underestimate the game between Deamons, if Sunny had gone in with more than one incarnation, it would have been significantly better and he could have used them to acquire more pieces and I doubt the game itself would have considered them as additional beings since it is part of his aspect. Also even with Weaver's legacy boost to his mind, he barely handled the battle at the underwater city.
        - Finally, if Sunny had acquired the entire legacy of the Deamon of Fate, he would have probably instantly ascended to Sacred. Since he would essentially be the second coming of the Deamon of Fate with the full legacy to boot, one thing we know about the Deamons is that it took them a very short time to go from Sacred to Divine, so I assume that each piece of the legacy he acquires is a tremendous shortcut to him becoming Sacred due to the notable changes in his own views on mortality and the divine. Also, we know that Deamons that are at the level of being Sacred can essentially shrug death off, just like Rime, the Deamon of Repose did and shattered the Shadow Realm to leave while being Sacred.

Distinguished sir, paragon of polysyllabic grandiloquence, avatar of meritorious personage and sesquipedalian majesty; a thaumaturgic erudite whose prolix circumlocutions, redolent with ineffable perspicacity and mellifluous magniloquence, cascade upon the hapless auditor in a veritable cataract of logorrheic effulgence, so ornate they could upholster the nave of a neo‑Byzantine basilica

Ah, but therein lies my clandestine delectation: to orchestrate a symphony of sesquipedalian obfuscations so luxuriantly baroque that even the most erudite interlocutor must pause, perspire, and consult the lexicon. It is not mere prolixity, but a deliberate thaumaturgy of verbiagean epistemological labyrinth designed less to illuminate than to ensnare. The true sport, you see, is not in the utterance itself, but in the exquisite spectacle of watching sagacious minds stumble through the chiaroscuro of my magniloquent machinations.

Huh, so it's basically confirmed Noctis is a High Priest of Weaver with the mantle and mask and all. And Asterion is really a dillema, even if the Sovereigns DID kill themselves, Asterion will have a backup thought bomb that can activate before he gets killed making a believer the last second. Actually, the Marvelous Rock is a deadly weapon if Asterion gets it, a rock that repeats Asterion 24/7 goodness.

It look to be the majority vote, but I don't believe Sunny and Neph are going to sit around doing nothing while Cassie does all the work. ( people forget G3 said he doesn't want to or like doing other pov's ).

Cassie will eradicate the Asterion virus after reaching supremacy, but Sunny Neph and Mordert will kill Asterion.

I will get humiliated and hung by my toes for now. I'm sure. But in the end, my investment will pay off.

Now what? Is Noctis Sunny's past life (considering the same sarcastic tone)? And why is Weaver being referred to as "she"? Is Google Translate messing with me?
Also, and quite clearly, only Cassie can kill Asterion.

Weaver was being refer to as a she mostly because it was Cassie being in the place of weaver. It's in her perspective and we don't really know the genders of the daemons and gods. I mean we do and they do have a preference so any gender is fine mostly.
