Chapter 2667: Boarding Party

Jet, Naeve, and Bloodwave were spread out across the deck of the Night Garden, ready to defend it if the detestable dwellers of the Eternal City broke through the shield of severing starlight that surrounded the living ship, as well as the fierce barrage of the obsidian cannons.

Nightwalker was steering the ship, while Aether was sitting on the floor of the runic hall with his legs crossed and his eyes closed, seemingly meditating. His skin glowed with a pale silver radiance, and his white hair moved faintly in the wind. He was controlling the radiance of Storm God's Lighthouse to slash and sever any Nightmare Creature that attempted to leap onto the deck of the Night Garden.

His Aspect had always been powerful — granted, it was most effective at night — but here in the Eternal City, which was illuminated by the Lighthouse and the silver spires reflecting its light, it became especially lethal... lethal enough to keep most of the abominations at bay, at least.

The reason why a mere Transcendent could defend the Night Garden from numerous Great Ones was the star trapped at the top of the Lighthouse. Not only was he far closer to the source of his power than usual, but the star itself was also special, containing a trace of Storm God — it was the divinity of the Goddess of the Black Skies that made its light so deadly to Nightmare Creatures, and why the Night Garden could be protected by a shield of sacral starlight... for as long as Aether still had essence, at least.

Asa result, the living ship seemed to have become a radiant comet, bathing the streets of the Eternal City in light as it moved through the canals.

"How pretty..."

Sunny himself was leaning on a pillar that formed one of the arched portals of the runic halls, one step away from plummeting from the great height of the Mainmast Pagoda to the deck far below. He had two tasks at the moment — one was to protect Aether, the other to operate the enchanted cannons.

Before, he had manifested countless hands out of shadows to load and fire them... but now, that did not seem sufficient. So, he manifested crude human figures instead, controlling them like golems to maintain a ceaseless barrage.

At the moment, the twelve port cannons were firing at the mass of detestable flesh pursuing the Night Garden along the edge of the nameless island to the north. The starboard cannons, meanwhile, were being moved: six of them would join the port cannons, while the remaining six would face forward, since they were needed to accomplish a different task.

Soon enough, the devastating hail of charged cannonballs grew even more intense, causing bloody carnage among the dreadful immortals. The thunderous roaring of the cannonade fused into an echoing, deafening howl, traveling along the canal in both directions.

The nightmare creatures torn apart by the bombardment rapidly mended their pulverized bodies, naturally — but they remained dead enough to slow the tide of monstrous flesh down. More importantly, they could not leap toward the Night Garden, since the cannons created an iron curtain around it.

Well... it was more of a shadow curtain, really, since the cannonballs Sunny used to load the cannons were made out of manifested shadows.

Surrounded by starlight and devastation, the Night Garden sailed through the canal. Soon enough, the bridge connecting the Park Island to the nameless one came into view — the six cannons moved to the bow of the living ship opened fire then, decimating the immortals trying to cross it.

But that first salvo was merely to help Sunny adjust aim.

By the time he reloaded the cannons, he could see the Shadow Legion assembled at the edge of the Park Island, as well.

The vast sea of grotesque shades stood in neat rows, with huge figures of dead titans among them, the Dark Castle towering above it all, and the gigantic moth perched atop it...

Nightwalker looked at the eerie sight with a stunned expression.

"W—what... what the hell is this?"

Leaning on the pillar with an aloof expression, Sunny smiled faintly.

"This is the rest of me."

He turned his head and looked at Nightwalker.

"It's time to stop.’

The Night Garden slowed down. It continued moving forward due to inertia for a while, but eventually came to a halt near the formation of the Shadow Legion. The precision with which Nightwalker managed to park the titanic ship was nothing short of stunning, actually.

He stared at Sunny for a moment, then looked away and mumbled under his nose:

"The rest of me... what is that even supposed to mean..."

Sunny looked away and gazed at the great mass of his silent shades.

He sighed.

"Death swallows all"

With that, bridges made of shadows extended from the island, connecting it to the deck of the Night Garden.

And the silent shades marched forward, crossing them to board the living ship.

The Shadows Wolves, the Obsidian Wasps, the Asuras of Condemnation, the Black Millipedes and their Queen... the spawns of the Chain of Nightmares, the shadows of the human Saints... Daeron, Goliath, Winter Beast, Defiled Seeker... and countless more. The flooded the surface decks of the Night Garden like a dark tide, spreading along the great length of the living ship to defend it. Saint, Slayer, Fiend, and Serpent were there, as well — a few seconds later, the absent incarnations of Sunny joined them, having returned from pillaging the conquered islands.

Finally, the gigantic moth sitting atop the Dark Castle shifted subtly and then spread its vast wings. The Puppeteer raised a hurricane when it flapped them and leaped off the tall tower, soaring through the air, and finding a new perch atop the main mast of the Night Garden. It was as if a piece of the night sky itself had moved.

All that was left was the Dark Castle. It crossed the gap between the edge of the island and the living ship last, settling in an open space near the bow of the Night Garden. The ancient vessel swayed lightly as it accommodated Mimic's weight. Nightwalker observed all that with a peculiar expression.

"I guess... you really are a being of the same caliber as the Serpent King."

Sunny suppressed a smile.

He remained silent for a moment, and then said:

"Oh, I am. Actually, I killed the Serpent King once. He's here somewhere, by the way, among my shadows..."

Now that i think about it where did gender come from? The gods probably wasn't born with a gender. It should have been sun god rt he was the God of passion mf probably invented it to get passionate. So if it was invented after the birth of gods did they decide to change gender or where they forcefully changed? I guess gods doesn't have genders but still there are goddesses so

Chapter 2668: The problem with the bridge

With the endless sea of silent shadows scattered across the Night Garden, the ship seemed almost crowded. Of course, there were many more people living here, but the people were the size of humans, but many of the Shadow Legion warriors were not, so it seemed as if the main deck was sinking into darkness.

The dark silhouettes of the phantoms contrasted sharply with the bright silver starlight, and the Night Garden almost looked like an ominous black-and-white engraving.

The living ship looked like Charon's boat, the guide of souls, drifting through dark waters to deliver the shadows of the dead to hell.
It was rather ironic that instead they were surrounded by the sunken streets of the Eternal City, a place devoid of death that was supposed to be heaven, but instead turned into a living hell.

"Hey, Your Grace... Why is there a giant moth on my ship?"

The Nightwalker's voice sounded a little muffled. Sonny looked at him intently.

«...This is not your ship. This is a Jet ship."

He was very happy to find Nightwalker, a legendary figure among the formidable Awakened Ones of the First Generation... but he wasn't going to let it lead to Jet's displacement. The House of Night had lost its Strongholds to Mordreth, and Mordreth had lost them to the Soul Reaper—so in Sunny's opinion, they belonged to her for as long as she wanted them to.

The Nightwalker showed no signs of wanting to return to his former Stronghold—in fact, he seemed generally aloof and devoid of any strong desires-but it was better to clarify everything right away.
Of course... It definitely wasn't because Sunny was outraged and shocked by the fact that this old lunatic had the audacity to flirt with Jet, who was so out of his league in every way that it wasn't even funny... No, definitely not.

    The Nightwalker cleared his throat.

    "That's right. Of course."

Sonny turned away with a satisfied grin.

"And this moth is here because it's very useful.

There is no doubt about it."

    He looked ahead.

"In any case, we should keep going—unless we want these abominations to catch up with us."

The Nightwalker stared at his back for a few moments, and then shrugged his shoulders.

"Then you better load those guns."

More and more immortals joined the frenzied stream of hideous flesh stretching across the abyss of the canal towards the Night Garden.

It was as if there was a hideous red forest growing on the edge of the island, twisting and sliding as individual abominations jumped on it.

Looking at this nightmarish sight, Sunny couldn't help but recall the maze of crimson coral that once covered the Forgotten Shore. Although this deadly maze only posed a small threat to him now, he still couldn't help but shudder as an unpleasant chill gripped his heart. This fear was firmly ingrained in him.

«...You don't have to worry about that."

The fallen immortals were torn apart by the cannonballs, wiped out by the Shadow Legion's long-range attacks, and hacked to pieces by the annihilating rays of silver starlight. A bloody haze permeated the air, and streams of blood gushed into the boiling water below, where myriad tiny Nightmarish Creatures greedily drank it.

So far, no enemy has reached the deck of the Night Garden, but if the swarm increases sufficiently and the living ship remains stationary, the situation may change.
However, the living ship was already moving. Slowly at first, then faster and faster, the Night Garden moved forward along the narrow channel.

Unfortunately, they encountered an unusual problem.

The channel was wide enough for an incredibly experienced helmsman to guide a titanic ship through it, and the surface of the islands was almost level with its deck. However, the tall masts of the Night Garden stretched far into the sky, as tall as the distant spires.
And therefore, the bridge connecting the two islands was an obstacle.

    "You have a minute!"

The Nightwalker's voice was a little nervous.
Without deigning to answer the warning, Sonny coldly looked ahead.
Hidden from view by the massive hull of the Dark Castle, the six cannons mounted on the bow of the living ship rumbled one after another and rolled back, spitting out six crushing cores.

However, this time Sunny wasn't aiming at the abominations crossing the bridge.

He was aiming at the bridge itself.

The first core crashed into it like a meteor, causing the bridge to ripple like a rope and sending a network of cracks through its huge mass. Huge chunks of stone flew in all directions like shrapnel, raining down like hail.
The bridge, of course, would have been restored... but just a split second later, a second cannonball hit the same spot, exacerbating the severe damage caused to the bridge structure.

    And then another one...

All six cannonballs hit the target with amazing accuracy, hitting the bridge consecutively, but within one second. The deafening thunderclaps from the six strikes merged into a single, terrifying roar.
It was a level of coordination and precision that six cannon teams could never achieve, but because Sonny controlled the cannons personally, he was able to execute this incredible sequence of shots on his own.

His first shots were not wasted, allowing him to adjust his aim.
Shattered and broken, the great bridge let out a low, rumbling groan...

    And collapsed.

Countless tons of rock poured into the canal, taking dozens of fallen immortals with them.
Before the magic of the Eternal City could reverse the destruction and pull the pieces back together, giant tentacles of shadows suddenly rose from the nose of the Night Garden and wrapped around the largest fragments of the broken stone, holding them in place. It seemed as if the living ship was just a shell hiding the body of a huge, shapeless, dark monster.

    Sonny chuckled softly.

    "Oh, that's..."

It was much more difficult than he expected.
The force with which the Eternal City was pulling the fragments of the destroyed bridge back was truly terrifying. Therefore, resistance to her, even temporary, felt just as heavy.
The shadow tentacles took root in the Night Garden, and as a result, the living ship actually rose several meters above the water.

«...Speed up a little, damn it!"

Drops of cold sweat appeared on Sunny's face.
However, he didn't have to endure for long.
Pretty soon, the Night Garden sailed under the destroyed bridge, its masts passing freely between the suspended fragments.
Withdrawing the shadow tentacles, Sunny heaved a sigh of relief and leaned heavily against the pillar. Behind him, the bridge was already being rebuilt... But it didn't matter.
After passing by, the Night Garden rushed forward.
Their daring journey to the heart of the Eternal City has begun.

      Chapter 2669: Coastal Pursuit

The Night Garden moved through the canals of the Eternal City, surrounded by starlight and enveloped in the thunderous roar of its cannons. The mass of Nightmarish Creatures chasing him along the coast of the left island grew steadily, forcing Sunny to frown and strain to load the guns faster.

Enhanced by the Curse, all the phantoms capable of attacking from a distance helped the cannons slow down their pursuers and harvest a frighteningly bloody harvest. The swarm of fallen immortals was constantly being torn apart and destroyed, but each time it recovered, like a terrifying, berserk, immortal beast. The sight was indescribable, eerie, and sinister...

But, on the other hand, Sunny has long been numb from all the horrors of the Realm of Dreams.

The saint was among the phantoms, throwing spears one after another into the seething mass of abominations. It's funny that the shadow of Goliath, whom she once killed with a spear, was nearby and unleashed her withering gaze on a swarm of desecrated immortals — because of her rank, the damage she inflicted was not fatal, but it served to injure and weaken enemies.

The Assassin rode an Obsidian Wasp and flew to the very top of the main mast of the Night Garden, hiding there in the shadow of the Puppeteer's wing. Her arrows fell like a deadly rain, unmistakably striking down the most monstrous members of the immortal swarm, despite the great distance.

Sonny wrapped one of his shadows around her to take advantage of the Killer's incredibly sharp senses. From the high altitude of the Assassin's precarious position, most of the southern part of the Eternal City was in full view...

He didn't like what he saw at all.

Daeron's shadow put down the spear and picked up the formidable great bow that was found in the Racetrack's arsenal. His arrows struck the fallen immortals like lightning, piercing through their grotesque bodies.

Strangely enough, the Snake took the form of Daeron and also took the bow. However, his arrows were much more deadly and destructive than the arrows of the dead Supreme — after all, the Serpent was a Shadow and had a Will, while the shadow of the Snake King was not.

      'Pretty ironic, isn't it?'

While its defenders repelled the pursuing abominations, the Night Garden slowly approached the edges of both islands. Sunny could already see the ice—covered building of the Island of Residences in the distance - the Night Wanderer could also see them.
      His expression turned gloomy.

      "This... pretty bad."

Sonny turned and looked at him questioningly.

      "What is it exactly?"

A pale smile appeared on the young face of the Night Walker.

"Don't you see that ship, Shadow?"

      Sonny raised an eyebrow.

      "Of course I see it."

      The Nightwalker nodded.

"Then you should have noticed that it's damn long."

      He sighed heavily.

"Moving it through this narrow channel is difficult enough as it is, so how difficult do you think it will be to turn around?"

Sonny blinked a couple of times.

      "Oh."

They were currently heading east, but in order to reach the Palace, they needed to turn north. The fastest way would be to do this at the nearest intersection of several channels and sail straight to the target. However, if that was not possible, they would have to reach the edge of the city, enter the open waters, circle the city counterclockwise, and re-enter the canals from the east.

      However, time was crucial.

Looking ahead, the Nightwalker sighed again. His silver eyes suddenly seemed to shine brighter.

"However, don't worry too much. I have a habit of always getting where I need to go... Although I advise you to hold on to something. It's going to be really tough."

      Sonny grimaced and turned away.

      "As always."

      The Nightwalker chuckled.

      "Indeed..."

The Night Garden was rapidly approaching the intersection of the channels separating the four islands. The water was rough, and the stone walls of the isolated areas of the Eternal City seemed to be terribly close to each other...

Even if the intersection itself was much wider than the canals and had an irregular shape, Sunny couldn't shake the feeling that it was impossible to get the Night Garden through the bend.

      He shuddered.

"Listen, do you think this is a bad time to tell you... That I hate traveling on ships?"

The Nightwalker didn't seem happy about this question.

      “what? Why is that?"

      Sonny frowned.

"The first time, it was a boat made of demon bones, sailing through an abomination-infested sea that was actually a Great Titan. Halfway through, the boat was destroyed by a creepy inhabitant of the depths, and I almost died."

      His frown deepened.

"The second time, it was a steel battleship sailing across the Indian Ocean, and you know what? Halfway through, we were attacked by some terrible sea monsters, the hull was breached, and I almost died."

      The Nightwalker coughed.

      Meanwhile, Sonny continued:

"For the third time, gods, don't even ask. I had to cross a river of the blood of an Unholy Titan on anything from makeshift rafts to the corpse of a huge, monstrous turtle. And guess what? The raft was smashed, the corpse was eaten, and when I finally found a normal ship... That's where the really terrible part began! I almost died."

It started out as a joke, but now Sonny was really pissed off.

"Ah, damn it. Damn it all! Why the hell did I think this expedition would be any better?"

The Nightwalker looked at him with pity.

"It can't be. This is just terrible bad luck! But it couldn't be that bad, right? What, have you never had a good experience on a boat?"
Sunny opened his mouth to reply angrily, but then closed it.

A strange expression appeared on his face. Eventually, his frown was replaced by a faint, distracted smile.

"Well, come to think of it... I once went boating on a date. It was nice."

He was silent for a moment, and then nodded.

"I take back my words. Boats are great..."

        Chapter 2670: Broken Navigation

In the end, the Nightwalker still managed to turn around. Sonny wasn't sure how he would do it, since it seemed physically impossible, but the founder of the House of Night was considered the greatest and most daring navigator in history for a reason.

"Pull up more of your creepy shadows to your nose!"

The colossal ship moved in his steady hands like a nimble gondola. The Night Garden turned slightly in the channel, its stern almost scraped across the Island of the Park, while the bow appeared only a few meters from the shore of the opposite island... and the frenzied mass of hideous, Nightmarish Creatures swarming on its edge.
The warning of the Nightwalker was timely, but the phantoms alone were not enough to prevent the invasion of the fallen immortals on the deck of the ship. Even a simultaneous salvo from six cannons mounted on the bow was not enough, so Sunny sent the Saint and the Fiend there, strengthening each of them with one of his incarnations.

Fortunately, the fierce confrontation did not last long. Soon enough, the Night Garden reached the end point of the island, breaking out into wider waters at the intersection of the channels.

        However, there was one problem...

There wasn't quite enough room for the titanic ship to pass through anyway.

'How is he going to do that?'

The Nightwalker remained calm, so Sunny assumed that he was confident in himself. He was probably relying on some mystical quality of his Aspect or his divine bloodline... At least that's what Sonny thought.
However, he was wrong, as the Nightwalker used a much more mundane solution to squeeze the living ship through an unimaginably steep turn.

        "Grab onto something!"

Sonny took a few steps away from the pillar he was leaning on and grabbed Ether.
He wasn't afraid for himself, as even falling from the edge of the runic hall posed no danger to him. The ether, however, could well have been affected by the fall from the great height of the main pagoda, not to mention the fact that its concentration could be disrupted, thereby weakening the shield of starlight protecting the ship.

        In the next moment...

        'This madman...'

The Night Garden crashed into the island at high speed. The sheer weight of the living ship was already astronomical, and with countless shadows—including giants like Goliath and the Puppeteer, not to mention the sheer bulk of the Dark Castle—on board, it became simply terrifying. The resulting impact was so strong and frightening that an entire section of the island collapsed, crashing into the foaming water.

Colossal chunks of stone flew through the air like projectiles.

        '...bastard!'

Sonny barely managed to keep Aether from falling off the edge of the runic hall.

        "You're crazy!"

        The Nightwalker laughed out loud.

Breaking through the cloud of dust and stone fragments, the nose of the Night Garden came out of it and entered the northern channel. Its port side scraped against the jagged surface of the broken stone, leaving deep scars on the living hull, but the ship did not slow down much, continuing to move forward.

        "Ah, that's better!"

The mad youth grinned brightly as he steered the ship into the channel. Sonny looked ahead and then cursed loudly, noticing the wall of another island rapidly approaching the bow of the living ship at an angle.

Soon enough, the Night Garden collided with her starboard side. This time, the blow was only a glancing blow, cracking the ancient stone and helping the living ship complete the turn.

        Breathing heavily, Sonny looked around.

The edge of one island was completely shattered, slowly recovering, while the other was cracked. The building of the Night Garden was damaged, but not penetrated.

The water flowing through the channels fluctuated and surged, rising hundreds of meters higher than it should have.
        The Nightwalker said:

"What kind of expression is that? We turned around, didn't we?"

        He smiled brightly.

"Actually, I've been feeling uneasy ever since we set sail from the Lighthouse. These narrow channels are just a horror. My heart lies in the open sea, where there are no limits and boundaries... but it was unexpectedly fun!"

Aether just stared at the two of them in shock. Sonny gritted his teeth.

"Yes, we turned around. And that's why I have such an expression on my face!"
The Nightwalker studied him for a moment, and then shrugged his shoulders.

"Well, it doesn't matter. I suggest you start loading your guns quickly."

        Sonny frowned.

        "What?"

        The Nightwalker pointed ahead.

"Load your guns! There's a bridge ahead!"

Swearing, Sonny turned around and looked ahead.
The Night Garden was now moving north, and there was indeed another bridge blocking their path.

        "Damn it!"

Controlling the manifested shadows, Sunny hurriedly reloaded the guns. He needed to break the indestructible bridge again... and this time it was a moving target. In fact, the Night Garden was moving, but that didn't make aiming any easier.

By that time, a stream of Nightmarish Creatures had bypassed the destroyed area of the island, continuing their pursuit.

To make matters worse, it was no longer the Island of the Park on the starboard side of the Night Garden. Instead, it was another nameless island, complete with its own swarm of hideous immortals.

They were already rushing towards its edge, merging into a second river of hideous flesh.

Soon, the human ship will be besieged on both sides...

And the situation will only get worse.

The deeper they penetrated into the Eternal City, the more islands they passed. Thus, the haunting Nightmarish Creatures from the previous islands joined those from the new ones, and their numbers grew continuously.

Until all the fallen immortals remaining in the southern half of the Eternal City try their best to get on the deck of the living ship, seized by a frantic desire to devour Sunny, Jet, and the Saints of the Night... and millions of people hiding inside the Night Garden.

        But maybe... maybe...

        That was good.

        Sunny's eyes flashed dangerously.

'I wonder if the Dutchman will like my gift...'

Sunny has gotten astounding good at using Shadow Manipulation to create stuff. I remember when it was difficult for him to create and maintain a single functioning hand, and now he creates an entire deck full of golems at the wave of his hand. I guess it’s silly to say this now after seeing him create palaces and shit, but making walls and bridges and glass seems less impressive to me than making moving constructs.

Ofc making moving constructs is more impressive. I think the next step would be creating Shades using shadow manipulation.
Ofc they won't possess a will of their own. But sunny can theoretically create let's say 1000 Asuras. All containing his will and essence. Similarly he can create a unique shade. Unlike any creature he has killed. Sort of like a frankenstines monster. That would be so cool to see.
