Chapter 2655: Cursed King

Hearing Nightwalker's words, Sunny frowned.

“Kanakht... I've heard that name before."

Jet had fought a Great Devil named the Heart of Kanakht, as well as several lesser nightmare creatures bearing similar names. According to Cassie, he had been a cursed king whose parts were kept apart to prevent him from coming back to life. More importantly, Eurys had mentioned an individual called Kanakht once, when talking about those cursed by Shadow God. Considering how countless traces of Kanakht were left in the Dream Realm, he must have been quite powerful. And considering the nature of these traces, he must have been quite sinister.

Now, they were facing a Great Terror born of the same source — a being of the same caliber as Skinwalker.

“Who the hell is Kanakht, though?" Nightwalker smiled wryly.

“Just an old myth."

He hesitated for a short while, then sighed. “He was supposedly one of the first humans, born at the dawn of the Age of Gods. Gods and deities walked the earth back then, battling Void Creatures and their spreading Corruption — they brushed sides with humans quite often, as well, to various results. Most of those encounters were benign in nature, but not all of them. Kanakht in particular managed to anger Shadow God, somehow, so Shadow God took his shadow away... and with it, his ability to die.

Sunny scratched his head.

“Doesn't sound like much of a punishment.’ Ina sense, he was the opposite of Kanakht — Sunny had more shadows than he knew what to do with. One was cursed by Shadow God, the other received Shadow God's blessing.

..The latter could be said about Sunny and Eurys, as well.

Nightwalker grinned.

“A very topical remark, considering where we are."

He fell silent for a moment.

“Gods have their own views on things, I guess. In any case, Kanakht did not seem to mind the curse of Shadow God. Eventually, he established a vast kingdom and ruled it for myriad generations, defending his people with his overwhelming power. His power was so great, in fact, that people started calling him a god"

Sunny raised an eyebrow.

"But?"

Nightwalker shrugged.

“But Kanakht didn't just want to be called a god, he wanted to be a god."

Sunny leaned against a wall and crossed his arms.

“Ah. That troublesome thing, Apotheosis.’ Nightwalker stared at him blankly.

“A what? Apotheosis? Oh... I guess the word fits.

Sunny had to remind himself that the man had been gone for decades. Even the existence of Supremes was news to him — naturally, he would not know about the impenetrable barrier that prevented them from climbing higher on the Path of Ascension.

He shook his head.

“Anyway, so what happened?"

Nightwalker answered in a neutral tone: “No matter what Kanakht tried, he could not step over the threshold of divinity — not without a shadow, at least. He became obsessed with the idea of godhood, and his kingdom gradually became a dark and nightmarish place. People who used to venerate and worship him were now full of terror and hatred for the undying monster who ruled them, and entire generations disappeared into the ghastly cauldron of his obsession. They could not do anything to free themselves, though. After all, Kanakht's power was overwhelming, and he could not be killed"

He leaned forward a little.

“They did manage to topple his throne in the end, still. Kanakht's body was severed from his soul and spirit, cut into pieces, and all these parts were sealed separately in various places, never to be reunited. The end"

Sunny stared at him incredulously.

"It's obviously not the end, though?" Nightwalker smiled.

“Well, | assume those seals were guarded by someone. However, the guardians all perished when the Dream Realm was consumed by Corruption. The seals weakened after a while, and the same Corruption took hold of the severed remains of Kanakht. Those pieces eventually became horrid abominations.’

He fell silent for a while, then added in a grim tone:

“lL only know about this because I had the misfortune of visiting the kingdom of Kanakht in one of my Nightmares. The interesting part, however, is not what he did to earn the curse of Shadow God, and not what happened to his severed parts. It is not even what will happen if those parts fuse back together one day."

Nightwalker leaned back.

“The interesting part is how Kanakht was overthrown... and why.’

Sunny raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?

Nightwalker lingered for a few moments. “The being who helped the enslaved people of Kanakht's kingdom get rid of him was none other than the Demon of Repose, who happened to pass nearby. As for why she decided to help them... according to the myth, it was because after countless years of searching, Kanakht finally found a way to become a god despite being disqualified from achieving divinity the usual way.’ Sunny's eyes widened a little.

He remained silent for a few moments, then leaned forward.

"He found an alternative way to achieve Apotheosis? How?"

Nightwalker studied him a bit, then shrugged.

“lam not entirely sure, but apparently, he was planning to consume his own kingdom, complete with every person living there. So, not the best role model, as far as kingship goes."

He gave Sunny a curious glance.

“If only that poor fool lived in the age where the Nightmare Spell existed, huh? All that nonsense could have been avoided" Nightwalker fell silent for a while, then asked:

“You told me that the first Supremes emerged decades ago, right?"

Sunny nodded.

“Around twenty-five years ago, yes." Nightwalker looked away with a pensive expression.

“How come none of them challenged the Fifth Nightmare, then?"

Sunny tilted his head a little.

"I guess it's because one of them is stuck on the Moon, while the other two were misguided, afraid, and had too much to lose."

Nightwalker looked at him directly.

“What about you? Are you not misguided and afraid? Do you have nothing to lose?" Sunny smiled faintly.

“Me? No. And I am in a completely different situation than they were.’

He looked at Nightwalker and said in an even tone:

“Because of the decades they wasted, I am not afforded the luxury of having a choice. The end of days is not on the horizon anymore — it is already in progress. So it's become Sacred or die... or at least watch everything I treasure die.

Sunny sighed.

“That is the reason why I'm here, in the Eternal City. Conquering this place is a part of the process."

I see no one is talking about the big elephant in the room. Either no one noticed it or it was too huge to be seen. Kanakht couldn't die because his shadow was taken and separated from his soul. All of those sunny killed didn't come back when he took their shadows into his domain. This means their shadow and soul are inseparable. Same reason why sunny can't kill Euris or Kanakht theres no shadow to take. So sunny has a bunch of souls and shadows in his sea soul hence the title sovereign of death.
    7
Also regarding apotheosis or whatever, sunny has already absorbed his domain into himself, what exactly does he lack? Does he need to digest them further? He even has a bunch of sacred shadow souls/shades. Those are almost divine god ranks. Maybe he just needs to completely control or dominate them to digest and complete his apotheosis or whatever.

I believe that when Euris said Sunny would need time, it was a matter of learning to use and fully master his own sea of souls. To become sovereign, he used his will and powers to control the shadows he consumed and form an army. Now, to further "purify" and achieve his apotheosis, he will need to purify the shadows within his own sea of souls. Just as the shadow realm consumes the shadows that "live" within it, a smaller quantity with more quality is better than a huge quantity with few skills.
When Sunny consumes the shadows within his sea of souls, he will be able to become stronger and undergo apotheosis. constraint constraint

I wish after this arc he just suddenly became sacred. But shouldn’t he be saying “become divine or die”. I think only Nephis, maybe Sunny, will become divine.

Nephis will certainly challenge the 5th Nightmare alone or with his original cohort, without Sunny and Mordret, because Sunny is likely not strong enough to hold his own destiny and put it back in place. So he will have to remain in Ariel's tomb to become holy by consuming his own shadows, and Mordret will most likely use the essence of nothingness from the Hollow Mountains and consume all its vessels to become holy. In the end, Sunny and Mordret will lose most, if not all, of their army, but will become gods.

Why does he need to go to Ariel’s tomb to consume his own shadows? Plus what does that even mean?

I think they go for the fifth nightmare sunny, Nephis and def Mordret will tag along like always and do nothing but profit off the labor of others. Or they’ll all become sacred on their own then go into the last nightmare to become divine. Either way there’s at least one more nightmare for them if not two.

Eventually I think the group of seven challenge the final nightmare , which I guess will be on the moon of all places lol.
I wish they would go to the cat 5 gate in the states lol.

He goes to Ariel's tomb to take advantage of the time loop to become sacred. He's already having trouble touching fate, imagine holding it and putting it back in place. He himself said that a destiny has the weight of the world.
And there's the 7th nightmare in the shadow realm. The 6th nightmare is on the moon.

So the skinwalker was a great terror? Also pretty badass that Mordret killed a great terror. Time for Sunny to man up.

Why did the “skinwalker” never have a special name? Did Cassie or anyone who had the nightmare infection never know its name? Does anyone know why they just called him the skinwalker while this great terror has a cool name?

So two questions, was the skinwalker really a great terror? Was “Skinwalker” its “real name”. I never thought about that. All of these stronger nightmare monsters have some kind of name.
    Thanks.

G3 really lacks creativity with these characters. Almost every power is used more than once. I wish he was more experimental with the powers he gave. And it's not like there's a lack of resources to copy from. There's nothing wrong with that. Or at least go into more details as to how the effect maybe same, but the method is different. Eg.
Skinwalker takes over the body, Mordret takes over the body so does flesh of Kanakht. How are they different?
    Let's try to do it.
Flesh of Kanakht takes over the flesh. This can be different. But since the soul or spirit may still exist, his vessels are weaker since the og owner tries to fight back. Ofc weaker ones will lose but higher ones can be shown to do this. This will also help Sunny and cohort.

There's no way to differentiate between Mordret and Skinwalker.

Then there's the countless ncs that can revive the dead. Puppeteer moths spawn. The crystal worms in Antarctica war. Probably some other nc I'm forgetting.

You can pretty easily differentiate between Mordret and Skinwalker, the skinwalker is a single unified being inhabiting many bodies, while Mordret has split himself into countless other selves to inhabit many bodies.

What do you want creativity or to copy? Those are complete opposites. Is something missing up there in your head?

Thats like saying I want a cheeseburger with no cheese, a milkshake with no milk or a white chocolate with no chocolate. Well maybe scratch the last sample but you should understand that if you're not bipolar.

Ya'know, Kanakht's method might actually be worth a shot. I mean, he was an ancient tyrant, how many people could he have had in his kingdom anyway? Definitely way less than modern humanity, so what's wrong with sacrificing a few hundred thousand or millions at most, when it's to secure a future for billions?

The only thing is that kanakht didn't try to become a god for his people, but for his obsession, so the process would've been on the morally low side.

Also, i think this process of consuming one's own kingdom including its citizens might work on mordy and sunny, might be tailor made for them, if anything. Tho not advisable for nephis or anyone else whose domain consists of actual living humans

That comes with a substantial risk of death, though. And for Sunny specifically, it means reclaiming his fate.

When Sunny was touching fate, he said he carried the weight of an entire world. Perhaps he isn't strong enough to retrieve his own fate and must first become sacred to put it back in place. That's why the estuary's shadow was possibly sacred.
