Chapter 2634: Gathering Data

The flood of slithering, hungry flesh collided with the vanguard of the Shadow Legion.

A vast swath of the radiant plaza exploded into a cloud of stone shards, then was restored to pristine condition, then was destroyed again.

The fallen immortals each possessed the power of a Great One, bending the very fabric of the world with their profane will. However, the enemies they faced were not weak, either — there, at the forefront of the great battle formation, the shades of the Black Millipedes and the Ember Queen flowed forward like a dark tide, unleashing their fury upon the abominable fiends.

The millipedes were connected to the Puppeteer through the ethereal strands of black silk, and through the Puppeteer to Sunny.

Suddenly, he could sense and command countless grotesque, segmented bodies. Sunny had a myriad of sharp legs and a myriad of even sharper mandibles, using them to tear and tear the flesh of the immortal swarm to shreds.

The prisoners of the Eternal City were unmade, and then restored once again. Countless shades were vanquished, returning into the dark embrace of his soul. A moment later, the tide of millipedes rippled and changed its behavior. Instead of flowing forward like a tide of chilling, bestial fury, the millipede formed an unbreakable wall from their glossy black chitin. Those of them who had been cast by beings of higher Classes rose above that wall, spitting torrents of corrosive black acid at the advancing immortals...

For a few seconds, the plaza was drowned by acrid smoke.

Then, segments of the chitin wall were breached or torn apart, and the carnage continued.

Sunny observed the battle through countless eyes — and through his own four pairs of them, as well.

“I've noticed something peculiar.’

Jet's voice was oddly calm despite the frightening spectacle happening in front of them.

Sunny raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

She glanced around. Her gaze lingered on Saint, Slayer, Nightmare, the immense form of Serpent wrapped around one of the Dark Castle's towers, and the lumbering figure of Fiend far below.

"You seem to be holding back."

Sunny forced out a smile.

"I need to establish a baseline to know how rapid my shades can be destroyed by these things. Once I know that, I will know how to plan for future battles better.’

She frowned slightly.

“Are the losses you are suffering worth it?"

He grimaced.

"That is something I need to find out, as well.”

Sunny was not going to sacrifice countless shades in pursuit of vital information, though. He was definitely not going to sacrifice the Ember Queen and her more powerful champions — so, when the wall of chitin came close to collapsing, he moved one to the next test.

Three of his incarnations stepped through the shadows and fused with him, augmenting his power.

‘Ah... feels great.'

This was the strongest he had been after the final battle at Godgrave, so Sunny almost felt like himself again. Enjoying the feeling of ferocious power running through his veins, he cast his attention to something else.

The moment four of his incarnations were reunited, four links of the Curse fused, as well. Instantly, its power soared... and his did, too.

In fact, it worked so well that Sunny was stunned for a brief moment.

‘Oh. I see what is happening.’

It was the [Absence of Light] enchantment doing its work. That enchantment was supposed to grant Sunny more power when he was surrounded by deep shadows... and where would he find shadows that were deeper than those that dwelled at the bottom of the Stormsea, in the abyssal darkness that had never been touched even by an echo of sunlight?

Perhaps only in the Shadow Realm. Spending a split second to come to terms with his immense potency, Sunny inhaled slowly, and then activated two of the three core enchantments of the Curse: [Shadow Flame] and [Mercy of Shadow].

Instantly, the enhancement he was enjoying was transferred to the champion shades of the Black Millipede tribe. At the same time, more of his deathly will was expressed through them, as well.

The cadence of the battle changed.

Far below, the rate at which his shades were being destroyed increased drastically. At the same time, the rate at which the fallen immortals were obliterated increased.

Not that it mattered much, considering that they were revived before too long.

Sunny frowned.

The effect was significant... but that was because there were relatively few of the immortal abominations on the outskirts of the Eternal City. Once they delved deeper into its streets, the scale of the battles would increase, and therefore, the impact of the Curse would become less pronounced. But that was valuable information in and of itself, because it helped him understand what kind of engagements he had to avoid, and what kind he had to force.

Jet sighed.

"Are you done gathering information, perhaps?"

Sunny lingered for a few seconds and then sighed.

"Yes. That should do, for now."

It seemed as if Slayer had been waiting to hear these exact words. A moment after Sunny spoke them, she was already drawing her bow, the tip of her arrow swelling with blinding light.

At the same time, Saint turned into a torrent of darkness and rushed toward the battle. Nightmare leaped into the air, while Serpent slithered to the ground like a river of onyx scales.

Fiend simply plummeted into the shadows, stepping through them to appear just beyond the mass of Shadow Millipedes.

He did not manage to disappear before Sunny stirred and shouted, his voice full of concern:

“Don't eat them!"

The first thing he had thought about when presented with the problem of containing the fallen immortals was feeding them to either Fiend or Mimic. However, the dwellers of the Eternal City were too eerie, too unnerving. Sunny was worried that swallowing one of these creatures would allow it to infect his Sadows.

Observing the Shadow Legion stir, Jet asked ina calm tone:

"So... are we joining the fun, as well?"

Sunny glanced at her and smiled.

“Of course. We wouldn't want to miss something so memorable, would we?"

Ah, it was a good trip when the chapters piled up (not because I wanted to but because of compelling circumstances, the military national service which I congratulate myself for surviving despite the mental damage in these 20 days waiting to see if I'll wear the uniform or go home with the surplus. ) and avoided a lot of stress and anxiety waiting for the chapters, now we are back in full.

Ii don't get it, are you in Tour of duty or relieved of duty?
      I shudder to think AWOL???

No, you wouldn't want that burden of being tagged as a deserter for the rest of your life. Get yourself in line and the rest will follow. Just a friendy advice from a fellow soldier.

That is what we are, who we are, and what we do. We are soldiers. No matter what, no matter where, we soldier on.

          Good news then.
I now know you're eather in Turkey, Uzbekistan, Mexico, or Taiwan.
Those are the only countries with draft exemptions.
Thank you. Good job, itll be easier for me to find you in the future in case I have to.

Only 2 of them have desserts, so it's narrowed down to either Turkey or Mexico. My guess is Turkey. Why? Because Fox's are more predominant in Turkish folklore than in Mexico.

If i can get that much information about you from across the globe. Imagine the intel i can gather if I physically visited the place. My shadow sense aspect would spread across Turkey.
          LoL. Almost had ya convinced

No, I'm too far away. It's a very obvious country on the map, the kind you don't even have to try to find. In fact, it might be the first country you notice when you look at a map (unless you're American. These guys think they're the center of the world).

Your statement to assume I'm American and think that Turkey isn't the first thing you notice on the map only further proved I'm correct.
You'll only notice first the country you're in because thats what they show children in school. Every country does that.
Don't you know watergoddess is Turkish too...hmmm do you know each other?

I wonder how much of Sunny's life is planned by Weaver. I can understand before antartica's end he had [Fated] but now.. are things going in a random path or is it Weaver's plan. Like the order of the Weave's his getting. Or step by step planned, go there, kill that, take this etc.

Even without fate, you can manipulate an individual into carrying out your plans despite everything. It's called "open plans". You know it, but there's no other choice but to follow through.

I still don’t know why one of his bodies isn’t already in the light house or watch tower whatever they called it. He could bypassed all of this and scene what was going on. Also could have spied on the other ship and how the ghost things were doing as well as whenever the third thing was. Makes no sense to fight an entire undying mob if you don’t have to.

Despite being a Sovereign, I think Sunless is not fast enough to find and steal the riches (perhaps also having to kill the ruler of the city that might guard it), before the wraiths / beautiful TentacleFaces reach the Eternal Garden.

Because despite being a teleporting shadow, higher level beings can still sense him.

It's obvious these Great tentacle zombies are just some kind of spores/parts of a greater monster. Possibly an underling of or the 'ruler' of the city itself, which is at the very least a Cursed Tyrant, and could easily be a Cursed Titan or some kind of Unholy.

A Cursed Tyrant could have a way to trap/corrupt/destroy a 1/7th Sunny, anything higher just makes the likelihood of that skyrocket.

This is before even considering the Dutchman, mechanisms left by Storm God, mechanisms left by Repose, and mechanisms left by Daeron. On top of all that, Sunny hasn't lost a body yet, but it seems like a really bad idea to risk it, especially when it would leave him weaker.

Why can't we just enjoy a return to some strategic fighting, instead of rock paper scissors of divine attributes? It's not like speed-running an arc would be a very enjoyable read...

Think of it like this, there are certainly cursed creatures here, and a cursed one could spot sunny. While Sunny could definitely beat a cursed one one on one, if he had to also fight an immortal army of abominations at the same time as trying to restrain and capture a cursed one, he would probably die, so he has to let the weaker ones come to him to capture, then deal with the stronger ones.

I think Sunny being Supreme is the key here, and that this is what he needs to learn.

“A Supreme is someone who claims rulership over the world, or at least a part of it. Their distinct trait is the authority they wield, which is born from an act of supreme defiance. Supremacy is not just about power; it is the ability to impose one's Will upon reality, defying existing authorities, natural laws, or even the will of gods.”

So, the immortality of the inhabitants is the will of the Daemon of Repose, that she imparted on the World Tree to defeat the corruption.

“The Demon of Repose played a pivotal role in the salvation of the World Tree during the Age of Heroes. After the Demon of Repose had created the cycle of seasons, the sacred forest flourished under the immutable strength of the World Tree, the avatar of Heart God. However, when the tree became afflicted with a virulent rot — a living being, an Unholy Terror, a remnant of the Age of Chaos — even the divine vessel could not resist its corruption. Answering Heart God's call, the Demon of Repose returned to the sacred forest. Unlike her brother Ariel, the Demon of Dread, who defeated an Unholy Titan in battle, she did not fight the curse directly. Instead, she cast the World Tree into a state of endless rejuvenation, allowing it to consume the disease by rotting, dying, and being reborn over and over, until the Unholy Terror perished and the World Tree regained vitality.”

    Kinda sounds familiar, huh?

Yeah his Will is not at that level or not absolute yet Eurys living is proof of it. If he can kill these immortals now, Eurys is next.
He did say "You are not strong enough to break Shadow's curse" that is, death is a gods weapon, his Will and he couldnt break it then, if this arc is to rise him to that level its gotta be long asf imo
