Chapter 2319: Learning Journey

Observing Kai, Sunny experienced a deep feeling of humor. However, that humor came and disappeared quickly.

Releasing a breath, he glanced upward. The sky of the tiny realm was hidden by the clouds of ash, but it appeared clear above the snowy mountains. It looked like the moon was sinking... the night would end soon, giving way to the light of day.

Somehow, Sunny sensed that this brief period of calm wasn't going to continue much longer than the night.

'What will the Snow Tyrant attempt?'

And what could the Snow Tyrant attempt?

Actually, Sunny noticed the faint oddness of his situation. He had taken the role of the Ash Tyrant... who was a character of crucial importance, certainly, but merely a character nonetheless.

Sunny wasn't the player.

His belief that there existed a difference between the two rested on several facts. Primarily, if the players of Ariel's Game were meant to serve as Tyrants of their respective Domains... then there would be no Snow Tyrant anywhere in this manufactured world — after all, the original players of the game had vanished long ago.

Additionally, his position as the Ash Tyrant hadn't given Sunny any fresh abilities — including the ability to direct lesser Ash figures. Kai and Slayer weren't forced to follow him because of the rules of the game, they simply heard him out because he was Sunny.

Likewise...

If there existed a Snow Tyrant on the opposite side of the board, would they have any influence over the Snow Abominations?

He couldn't be certain.

Based on the answer, though, Sunny confronted two entirely separate dangers.

If the Snow Tyrant could manage the figures freely, then he would face an organized and deadly force. This game would become a contest of two minds. If not... the Beasts would wander freely, and the main challenge blocking his path would be this manufactured realm itself.

"We'll know soon."

Kai lifted an eyebrow.

"What?"

Sunny released another breath.

"We'll know what type of battle this is once the Snow Abominations begin to move."

He examined the three snowy mountains.

"If they're simple Beasts, they'll hurry to consume us immediately. If they're servants of a Tyrant, though... they'll seize the other two volcanoes first, to strengthen the Snow Domain and weaken the Ash Domain as much as possible before the final attack. Our reaction will vary greatly depending on what they choose to do."

He formed a needle from shadows and started completing a quiver for Kai. Less than a minute later, it was finished.

Sunny placed the arrows he had built into the quiver and handed it to the appealing archer with a grin.

"Here... this should work for now."

Getting up, Sunny wiped the ash from his clothes and motioned to the column of smoke climbing into the sky behind them.

"We should likely investigate the castle while we can."

As they moved down into the crater, Sunny looked at Kai, and then asked quietly:

"You have some practice battling Great Nightmare Creatures, correct?"

Kai nodded.

"Yes. As a government Saint, during the conflict in Bastion, and afterward as the guardian of Ravenheart... I've encountered a few."

Sunny grinned darkly.

"How did it go?"

Kai's face turned serious.

"...Like challenging gods."

He stayed quiet for several moments, then added with a sigh:

"The Great Ones... are tougher and more terrifying than monsters of lower Ranks, true. But I've long grown used to fighting against enemies who outmatch me in all aspects. The issue is that confronting them feels unlike a standard fight. It's as if reality itself supports their side."

Sunny nodded.

"Reality does indeed support their side — because they compel reality to support their side. What divides those Great and Supreme from those of lower Ranks is the strength of our determination. Our determination is dominating enough to control reality... to some extent, at least. Well, you must understand all that already — after all, both Nephis and I spent considerable time sharing our knowledge with Cassie, who then produced a document for those who need to be informed."

Kai watched Sunny with a remote expression.

"Yes, I understand. However... I regret saying this, Sunny, but I don't believe that anyone else will manage to duplicate what you two have achieved — reaching Supremacy naturally, I mean. That... that isn't my lack of confidence talking. It's just that you and Nephis often fail to recognize how remarkable you are. Failing to recognize it severely."

Sunny pressed his lips together.

Kai, meanwhile, released a sigh.

"...Which means that the rest of us will need to do it the conventional way. We will need to face the Fourth Nightmare."

Sunny watched him for a while, then looked elsewhere.

"Only four individuals have ever lived through the Fourth Nightmare. You will meet Great Nightmare Creatures there, too... so, consider this small trip of ours as training. I'll deal with the Cursed Ones, if we must confront any, but the Great nightmare creatures will be your task. I'm confident you'll succeed — after all, I..."

Sunny wanted to mention how he had slain a Great Devil as a Sleeper, but stopped himself for once. Now wasn't the moment for jokes.

"I'll support you. You have two ideal instructors with you, anyway. I am a Supreme myself, while she..."

He pointed toward Slayer.

"She is probably the most successful killer I have ever known. Not only that, but her main killing instrument is a bow, as well. So observe her closely, and learn from her."

There was truly no better example for Kai than Slayer. So, Sunny had great expectations for him.

Having two skilled archers helping him against the Snow Abomination sounded wonderful, too — he was seldom blessed with such assistance.

Kai smiled.

"I will."

Sunny paused for a few moments, considering what else to mention.

It wasn't about encouraging Kai to try his hardest — he had never lacked encouragement. It was more about showing him a viewpoint that would make him want to do beyond his hardest. To have the desire to triumph no matter what.

This was the sole way to endure in the harsh world of the Nightmare Spell.

Finally, Sunny asked:

"Your Nightmares. How did you endure them?"

Kai thought about his question for a while, then replied with a slight smile:

"I endured because of the people who stood beside me."

Sunny nodded.

"Indeed. Because nobody survives in the Dream Realm alone."

He gazed at Kai and added flatly:

"But to those people, you were and will be the person standing beside them. Their survival will rely on you, just like your survival will rely on theirs."

Kai's look shifted subtly, and his smile faded.

Seeing that shift, Sunny glanced away.

"So, how many more people will endure the Fourth Nightmare in the future depends on you. Accept responsibility."

Kai stayed quiet for a long time, then nodded silently.

By then, they had arrived at the crumbling castle.

    Chapter 2321: Truth or Death

The world was coming to an end.

On an endless white plain, the corpses of lesser gods lay broken and shattered. Rivers of ichor were flowing across the fractured ice like molten gold, cascading into the depths of an imprisoned ocean. High above, the sky was broken as well. Tendrils of nothingness were seeping through the fissures, slowly consuming the vast expanse of the firmament.

A giant was kneeling in the middle of the silent battlefield, grasping his head with two enormous hands. Golden blood and viscous streams of grey matter were flowing through his fingers, and his radiant eyes were darting around, feverish and dazed.

His gorgeous ivory armor was torn, and his spear lay on the ice, forgotten, still brimming with the echoes of destructive lightning.

The giant was a deity, his spirit as vast as a world.

    His lips moved, whispering:

    'I… I am… I am, I am… I am…'

His whispers were full of dread.

Then, he suddenly grew still and glanced down, at the empty vastness of the broken ice in front of him.

The giant's expression slowly grew eerily calm, and his voice grew even, sounding deeper and lower than it had before.

He lowered his hands, allowing his broken skull to come undone, and spoke:

'Hail Weaver… Firstborn of the Forgotten God.'

As he did, a nebulous figure was suddenly revealed on the ice, shrouded by a tattered mantle and wearing a fearsome mask. A voice that was like a thousand hopeless prayers resounded from behind the mask, making the giant shiver.

'Brother, my brother. Why are you hiding inside this hideous corpse?'

The giant laughed with a voice that was not his own, then spoke in an insidious whisper:

'Ah… must you offend me so, Weaver? Must you abandon all fear when facing the Demon of Dread? All of us daemons have sworn to destroy you. Why are you here? Why have you revealed yourself?'

The fearsome mask of the nebulous daemon stayed still.

Weaver remained silent for a while, then spoke:

'My brother knows what everyone fears, and therefore, he knows everyone's truth. However, I know no fear. What then is my truth?'

The wind moved the tattered mantle, revealing nothing of what was hidden beneath.

'I thought I'd offer you to play a game.'

The dying giant gazed upon him, light dimming slowly in his golden eyes.

'A game? Ah… what kind of game?'

The Demon of Fate responded to the dying deity:

'A game of death, naturally. Whoever wins will give the other one a truth. And if I lose, I will allow myself to be destroyed.'

The giant shuddered and collapsed, and as he did, the broken ice swallowed his corpse.

A faint whisper drifted above the harrowing battlefield:

    'Come… I accept…'

The world suddenly disappeared into nothingness, replaced by a familiar room.

A masked figure was sitting on the cushions in front of an exquisite jade board. The room was drowning in darkness, and from that darkness, a whisper came:

'I know what truth I seek. But what truth can you, who sees the depths of fate, be lacking? What is it that you wish to learn, Weaver?'

The fearsome mask of the Demon of Fate glanced at the darkness. A thousand intertwined voices resounded from below it, making the darkness tremble.

'Do you know how fate can be broken, brother?'

A porcelain hand rose from the depths of the tattered mantle and grasped the figure of a figure carved from white jade.

'That is what I wish to learn.'

    ***

Sunny let out a groan and collapsed to his knees.

    'Ah…'

The echo of the insidious whisper and the aftershock of the nebulous voice were still ringing in his ears. He shuddered, feeling a terrible pressure crushing his mind.

    'Sunny?'

Kai was startled, rushing to support him.

    Sunny waved him away.

    'I am… I am fine.'

He was, indeed, fine - if a little worse to wear.

    'What happened?'

Sunny slowly picked himself off the floor and glanced at the remaining jade figure on the altar.

    'Hell if I know.'

    His voice sounded subdued.

One moment, he was standing in the keep of the Ash Castle, and the next moment, he was in the middle of a distressing battlefield, the world coming undone around him, witnessing two daemons having a peculiar conversation.

Weaver and Ariel… Fate and Dread.

The master of lies and the keeper of truths.

Weaver's nebulous figure seemed to be a bit ragged, for a lofty Divinity. The conversation must have taken place during the Doom War, when the sinister daemon was being hunted both by their siblings and by the gods. That porcelain hand looked familiar, as well… it must have been the one Weaver had assembled from the parts of the broken mannequins in the Ebony Tower.

Ariel, meanwhile, seemed to have been possessing the body of a defeated Divine champion - the giant who wielded a spear infused with ferocious endlessness of golden lightning. Sunny had not seen what the Demon of Dread actually looked like until the very end… possibly Ariel did not look like anything, at all.

Maybe the Demon of Dread existed only as a whisper.

In any case, Weaver had offered to play a game with high stakes, and Ariel accepted.

    'I think… I just saw a vision. Of sorts.'

What Sunny had seen did not feel like a vision. Actually, it did not feel like anything he was familiar with. It was as if he was there, but not there. As if he was present, but also absent.

As if he had simply learned the truth of what had happened on that day.

Sunny winced, feeling the pressure of witnessing three gods - two daemons and a dying Divine human - subside slowly, allowing him to breathe freely once more.

    'Who was that giant?'

    Kai, meanwhile, raised an eyebrow.

'Uh… are you prone to receiving visions, Sunny?'

    Sunny shook his head.

'No. Rather, it seems like throwing the figure of the Snow Beast into the volcano triggered it.'

    He hesitated for a while.

'In any case, I think I was wrong.'

    Kai frowned.

    'About what?'

Looking around, Sunny remembered the jade board and the desperate position of the Ash Domain. The Ash was losing desperately.

    He inhaled deeply.

'I don't think that the Jade Queen played Ash.'

Sunny looked at the figure of the Snow Beast once more and said, his voice subdued:

'I think the Demon of Dread played Ash. As for Snow… it must have been played by Weaver.'

      Chapter 2322: Beast Sacrifice

Sunny considered the peculiar vision he had received for a while. Eventually, his eyes gleamed darkly.
      'They were playing for truths.'

Ariel had been a collector of truth, but one mystery he could never solve was Weaver. Weaver, meanwhile… seemed to have been interested in finding a way to change fate.

That truth alone was priceless. Sunny had suspected that the Demon of Fate had a complicated relationship with their own… source element? Domain? Aspect? In any case, the Nightmare Spell seemed to have been designed with the explicit purpose of training its carriers to defy and twist fate.

Sunny firmly believed that the appraisal the Spell gave to those who conquered Nightmares was connected to how much they strayed from the original flow of fate, at least. But having a strong suspicion and hearing it with his own two ears were two different things. Granted… Sunny only learned that Weaver was searching for a way to change fate, not why. He did not know what the Demon of Fate had discovered, either.

In any case, the two daemons had played Death Game - the winner was supposed to be rewarded with a truth. And Weaver had utterly crushed Ariel, in the end.

'Rewarded, huh?' Was that what had happened to him? He had sacrificed the figure of a slain figure… and received a truth as a reward.

But why that truth, in particular?

Sunny stared at the remaining Snow Beast figure, then at the pit opening into the main vent of the volcano.

'Wait,' Was it simply because he wondered who the players of this game had been? 'My head was full of questions, though. Why this one in particular?' Was the answer given at random, or did the strength of a sacrificed figure play a role?

Would he learn something far more important if he sacrificed a Snow Monster figure? A Demon, A Devil…

      A Tyrant?

Suddenly, Sunny was very glad that there were twelve whole Snow Abominations left on the board. He had many questions.

Sunny had spent a decade slowly learning the secrets of the world. By now, he knew more about the truth of existence than almost anyone… but he still desperately wanted - needed - to know more. Why had the Doom War started? How did it end? How did the gods die? How did daemons perish? Was the Forgotten God still imprisoned in the Void? Where had the Nightmares and the Dream Realm come from?

What had been Weaver's goal? Why was the Nightmare Spell created? To what end? And countless less grandiose questions, as well… For example, what did he need to do to kill Eurys? What lay at the heart of Shadow Realm? When had the Demon of Oblivion died? How could she have been dead before Nether and his siblings rebelled against the gods?

      'I think…'

A strange smile slowly bloomed on Sunny's face.

'I think that coming here may have been the best idea of my life, Kai.'

Twelve Snow Abominations, and the Snow Beast figure in front of him…

Sunny had just discovered a way to pry thirteen truths from Ariel's Game.

Kai gave him a peculiar look.

'Sunny, can you please snap out of it? You're scaring, uh… your elegant Shadow over there. Yeah.'

Sunny blinked a couple of times and glanced at Slayer. Slayer seemed perfectly at ease. Kai, however, looked a little nervous. Sunny chuckled.

'Alright, alright. It's just that I discovered a use for the figures of slain Snow Abominations. I'm a little excited.'

What answer would he receive next?

Sunny reached for the remaining Snow figure, but then halted.

      His expression turned guarded.

'Am I… letting my curiosity trump caution?'

They had just recently talked about how some truths were too dangerous to learn. Sunny did not need to think too much to remember a dreadful example… they were the runes containing the knowledge of the Void that Ariel had left behind in the Estuary of the Great River.

The closer one's soul was to being Divine, the more resistant it was to the corrupting influence of the Void. That was why Awakening could destroy the Seed of Nightmare blooming in an Aspirant's soul… that was also why Sunny could endure knowing more about the Void as a Supreme as he could as a Master or a Saint. But that did not mean that he could endure much of such knowledge… not at all. And he definitely could not endure what Weaver and Ariel could. Even they had not been entirely immune to Corruption, so what hope did Sunny have?

If Ariel's Game granted him a truth that he could not endure, what was he going to do?

      Sunny hesitated for a while.

      'Wait. Isn't it wonderful, though?'

This incarnation of his was currently separated from the other six. Their minds and memories would fuse once again after Sunny escaped Ariel's Game… but not before it. So even if his mind was infected by Corruption as a result of learning something he was not supposed to know, he could simply kill himself. That way, his other incarnations would never come in contact with the forbidden knowledge.

      Kai frowned a little.

      'What… are you thinking about?'

      Sunny shrugged absentmindedly.

      'Killing myself…'

Kai was suddenly standing very near, looking at him intensely.

      'No, you mustn't!'

Sunny glanced at him in confusion.

      'Huh?'

Kai grabbed his shoulders, a rattled expression on his face.

'You… we don't know each other that well, and I won't presume to know what scars lay hidden in your heart… but you must not, Sunny! In this world we live in, a human life can be lost in an instant. But that only makes it more precious - just like your life is precious, too…'

      Sunny scowled.

'What are you on about, fool?'

Then, realizing how his words must have sounded to Kai, who could feel their sincerity, he winced.

'Oh, you misunderstood. I wasn't really thinking about killing myself… just this version of myself, should the need arise. It's not that big of an issue. Plus, this wouldn't even be the first or second time I killed myself. As you can see, I'm still perfectly alive!'

Kai stared at him silently for a while, then slowly let go of his shoulders, turned away, and coughed a couple of times.

'Oh. Oh, I see. Never mind, then.'

Then, his expression turned cold and wary, full of concerned apprehension.

      Sunny sighed.

'This guy… such a handful, really!'

'Listen, why would I kill myself? I am filthy rich, drop-dead gorgeous, have an awesome castle, and my girlfriend is literally the most gorgeous woman in the world. Who would want to die and leave all that behind?'

Kai glanced at him and shook his head.

'No, it's not that. I just looked beyond the castle.'

      Sunny raised an eyebrow.

      'And?'

A dark expression appeared on Kai's face.

'Do you remember saying that we'll have to wait for the adversary to make the first move? Well…'

      He sighed.

      'I think they're making the move now…'

    Chapter 2320: Ash Castle

The Ash Castle was a strange and looming structure. It was constructed above the primary vent of the volcano, apparently floating in the air. At first view, it seemed as if its massive weight was held by nothing except the rising currents of smoke... but upon closer inspection, Sunny noticed huge chains digging into the black rock of the crater, coated in thick layers of soot.

The castle was suspended above the void, the smoke-filled emptiness functioning as its barrier.
The protective value of such a design was doubtful, to say the least. Sure, any attacker would drop into the burning depths of the volcano unless they discovered a way to cross the wide gap, but simultaneously, the defenders would find it hard to stop the enemy from breaking the attachments of the chains that secured the castle in the air.

Sending his shadow sense into the deep vent, Sunny detected more chains fixing the castle to its walls further below. There appeared to be some kind of system built into the obsidian platform that formed the base for the burnt fortress, now damaged and in a state of decay.

'...Was this castle able to sink into the core of the volcano once?'

Even if it had been, it was trapped in position now, hardly able to bear its own weight.

Sunny pictured the entire building falling into the smoke beneath their feet. That would be problematic... but not too problematic. After all, he could fly away at any time.

The drawbridge of the castle was lifted, so Sunny created two raven-black wings and extended Slayer a hand. She viewed it coldly, while Kai smiled.

"I see you are a gentleman..."

As Slayer grabbed his hand, Sunny flexed his muscles and threw her into the air. The agile Shadow flew over the gap like a bullet, vanishing into the smoke — a few moments later, she touched down on one of the crumbling towers of the castle, spun to maintain her balance, and formed her bow in one fluid motion.

Her skirt billowed, and by the time its edge settled on her smooth ebony thigh again, an arrow was already placed on the string of the black bow.

Kai watched all of that unfold in silence. Sunny was blocked by the smoke, but could feel the shadows — the attractive archer, however, could view everything happen just fine.

    He sighed.

    "Never mind."

    Sunny smiled.

"What, did you expect me to give her a ride? Thanks, but no thanks. The last time she rode me... was too memorable."

He stopped for a moment, and then added in a gloomy voice:

"I mean, she sliced off my wings, choked me, and nearly pushed a knife into my skull."

Kai blinked a couple of times.

    "She did?"

When Sunny nodded, he gave him a disapproving look.

"You know... something like that would have been useful to know before I carried her across the sea of clouds on my back."

    Sunny grinned.

"I did think about giving you a warning. But I was convinced that she would not attempt to kill you... well, mostly convinced. Reasonably convinced? I was somewhat convinced that she would not attempt to kill you."

With that, he leaped into the gap, opened his wings, and let the streams of heated air lift him across the deep moat of the Ash Castle. Kai followed a few moments later with a soft sigh.

If there had been something dangerous waiting for them inside, Slayer would have already transformed it into a pincushion with her arrows. So, the two of them landed calmly on the fractured floor of the castle's broad courtyard, then headed toward the crumbling keep.

Slayer permitted her bow to change into a slender chain vambrace, then descended the tower with lethal elegance. She seemed to drop from one support to another, jamming her short swords between the eroded stones when there was none to find grip on — in just a few brief seconds, she reached the ground and joined them.

When they entered the keep, Sunny glanced around with a surprised expression.

    "Huh."

What appeared as a castle from outside... was actually merely a rough copy of one. There was nothing inside, really — no floors, no rooms, no intricate maze of hallways and staircases. Instead, there was simply a vast empty area, the floor covered in ash that gathered like mountains in the corners.

It seemed that even Ariel's focus on detail had a boundary.

    'Well, it makes sense.'

After all, the Ash Tyrants that had inhabited this castle once would not have been humans. Their size would have varied greatly, too — the towering gate of the keep hinted that some of them were truly massive.

"Do you see anything under the ash?"

Sunny didn't know what he wanted to find, exactly, but he had hoped to discover some hints about Ariel, his game, and the Jade Queen.

    Kai shook his head slowly.

"It's all in ruins. But there is some kind of stand in the center."

They looked at each other, then proceeded to the heart of the empty keep.

There, the floor of the castle opened into a large circular hole. Smoke rose through the opening like a rough column, escaping through a similar one in the roof of the Ash Castle.

And just in front of the hole, there was a burnt stone stand that resembled an altar, its surface covered in ash.

Moving closer, Sunny paused for a few moments, then swept the ash away. His hand felt two small objects hidden beneath it — clearing more of the ash, Sunny picked one of them up and examined it calmly.

There, in his palm, sat a bestial figurine carved from perfect white jade.

It was the figure of a Snow Beast.

    'Two of them...'

Twelve of the fourteen Snow figures remained on the board, which meant that the player of the Ash Domain had managed to defeat two — two Beasts.

And here, two Snow Beast figurines were sitting on an altar.

That... could not have been a coincidence.

"Why do you think these figures are here?"

    Kai's question made Sunny frown.

He stayed quiet for a few moments, then shrugged.

    "I'm not entirely certain."

Then, he suddenly recalled something... the ancient bones resting in the depths of the Ravenheart volcano.

Following an impulse, Sunny shifted his stance a little and threw the figure of the Snow Beast into the hole.

It vanished into the smoke without a trace.

A dozen seconds passed in silence, and then...

    Sunny was suddenly somewhere else.
