Chapter 2304: Needle in a Haystack

Sunny spent the next few days exploring the Jade Palace as a shadow. Not knowing what to look for, he commenced from the places that held the most significance, like the throne room.

As it turned out, there were two throne rooms in the Jade Palace. Both were majestic, with thrones that would suit a human, but while one was obviously meant for people, the other was too immense and cavernous, vast enough to fit much larger creatures.

There was a third throne room, too, hidden in the ice caves below the palace - but that one had been created by Ki Song, so Sunny paid it less attention.

Apart from the ice hall where the Raven Queen's throne stood, a few more caves had been polished and cultivated by the builders of Clan Song. As he found out, that was because Revel had lived in the caves below the Jade Palace once, most likely due to the fact that she was unable to step into sunlight because of her Flaw. In fact, the antisocial princess was still occupying those caves. So, he kept his distance.

Sunny did not find anything particularly relevant to his search in either of the throne rooms, which prompted him to search out other important areas of the Jade Palace. It was hard to say which space had served which purpose, but he eventually discovered a place that should have been the Jade Queen's bedchamber - it was the largest and most opulent one, at least, as well as one with the best view.

Funnily enough, the current ruler of the Jade Palace, Kai, did not use these quarters as his own. Instead, the gorgeous chamber served as a place for strategic meetings with his staff. Sunny accidentally listened to a few of those, finding it funny how different they felt from both the meetings on the Ivory Island and in the dark halls of the Marvellous Mimic.

The former tended to be solemn and dignified, while the latter tended to be irreverent and borderline nonsensical. Kai's style of leadership, however, was personable and pleasant, just like he himself.

Every ruler was different.

In any case, Sunny did not discover anything of note in the Queen's supposed bedchamber, either.

Next, he secretly explored the Gateway itself, which was located in a great hall close to the main gate. The tranquil murmur of water filled the hall, with clear streams of it flowing down the white walls into elaborate channels cut into the jade floor. The Gateway itself was a stunning sculpture, its vague silhouette obscured by the falling water.

Exploring the Gateway Hall was a little difficult because it was always full of people. Naturally, Sunny managed to remain unseen, in the end… to no result whatsoever.

After that, he even spent a day diving into various pools across the Jade Palace - some of them were both vast and immensely deep, so it took some time. Sunny did not find any traces of Weaver's lineage, but he did find out that some of those pools had actually been guest rooms of sort, meant for aquatic creatures.

'Ah… this is a little frustrating.'

Although neither of them had made arrangements, it just happened that Kai and Sunny ended up having dinners together in the evenings. Sunny glanced at the charming Saint and sighed.

'Maybe the thing I am looking for was never in the Jade Queen's possession? The hint only said that it was lost to Dread. Come to think of it, Ariel must have spent plenty of time in the Jade Palace. Where are his chambers? Did he have a place to stay here?'

Kai looked up from his food and raised an eyebrow.

'I don't think so. Then again, we don't really know what daemons looked like, so it is hard to guess.'

Sunny pushed his empty plate away and sighed.

'Who says we don't know what they looked like?'

He raised a hand and made to extend his fingers.

'I met the Daemon of Hope personally. What a stunner! I saw the Daemon of Destiny as well, albeit from afar. Would not recommend. While I never met the Daemon of Fate, I did see their arm once, that was quite memorable. Did you know that Weaver had seven fingers? On each hand, I mean, not overall. Oh, and I've been to the grave of the Daemon of Oblivion. Her sarcophagus is pretty human-sized.'

He scratched the back of his head.

'Don't ask me what they look like, though. It's… pretty hard to describe.'

Kai seemed very focused on his cup of tea, for some reason. He took a deep breath, then said weakly:

'N - no… I wasn't going to ask…'

Sunny looked at him with compassion.

'Poor guy. He must be really tired from work.' Leaning back, he closed his eyes for a few seconds.

'Actually, I'm curious. You did not even ask what it is that I am looking for, or why I must stay hidden. Don't you have any questions at all?'

Kai glanced at him for a while, then smiled faintly and turned around to his cup.

'I've learned not to ask unnecessary questions a long time ago. For someone like me, it's too easy to receive an answer that I would have preferred not to know.'

Sunny opened one eye and studied him silently. Then, he scoffed.

'Oh, because of your Flaw.'

He shook his head. 'I can't say that I understand why someone would choose to remain willingly ignorant, but actually, you might have a point. You are a Saint now, so learning something that should have remained hidden can be dangerous. Some knowledge won't just hurt your feelings - it may very well destroy you. And it will only grow more dangerous the further on the Path of Ascension you go.'

Kai put down his cup and nodded.

'I know. Some truths are not meant to be known by mortal men… and unlike the Daemon of Dread, I can't bury the things I learn in a tomb.'

Sunny grinned.

'There's Cassie, though. She can bury them for you.'

His grin widened a little. ',In fact, who's to say that she hasn't already liberated you from a memory or two? You'd never know.'

Kai glanced at him in confusion, then frowned.

'Cassie would never do something like that without my consent.'

And, at the same time, a familiar voice resounded in his head:

[Hey!]

This time, there was a hint of indignation in it.

Sunny laughed.

'The two of you share something in common.'

He shook his head with a smile. 'Both of you are far too nice to really make use of your terrible powers. I guess it's a relief, though.'

Sunny leaned forward and asked:

'In any case, when is Seishan arriving? Unlike you, all I want is answers. So, I want to ask her a couple of questions.'

Kai hesitated for a few seconds.

'Tomorrow. But… she and her sisters are the backbone of the entire region under my authority.'

Sunny raised an eyebrow.

'And?'

Kai seemed to be considering his words carefully.

'So, Sunny… can you… tone it down when we speak with them? A little.'

Sunny blinked a couple of times, scandalized.

What kind of question was that?

'Naturally, I can.'

Kai nodded with relief, then suddenly tensed.

'Wait… you said that you can tone it down. Not that you will.'

Sunny gave him a satisfied smile.

'Look at you, Nightingale. You know your friend so well…'

    2305 Childhood Home

Seishan did, indeed, arrive the next day, accompanied by two of her sisters. Kai met them at the end of the great stone bridge and invited them into the Jade Palace, where they were supposed to have a discussion regarding the development of the Dream Realm's western reaches.

Each of the seven Song sisters controlled a Citadel in the basin of the River of Tears or in Godgrave, although some of them spent most of their time here in Ravenheart. Beastmaster was in charge of a lion's share of logistics of the Human Domain, for example, Lonesome Howl commanded Awakened soldiers in a subjugation crusade across the wild expanse of the Dream Realm, Silent Stalker led teams of seasoned scouts to explore previously unmapped regions… Seishan herself was somewhat of an administrator, assisting Kai in the infinitely complex task of managing the West.

Today, it was two of the sisters that Kai invited into the Jade Palace, while the third emerged from the caves below it. The meeting took place in a room without windows, illuminated only by the light of a Memory lantern - there were plenty of shadows for Sunny to hide in, but he still chose the darkest corner, wary of the three women bearing the lineage of Beast God.

Revel was leaning on the wall with her arms crossed, her expression aloof, while Seishan and Death Singer took seats opposite Kai. The mood in the room was somewhat odd - after all, Kai was an usurper ruling their childhood home, and they, who should have owned the Jade Palace, had to be invited in by him.

That said, the atmosphere was surprisingly cordial. The Song sisters were not exactly friendly, but they were also not hostile… whatever emotions they felt about their mother's fate were kept private, and all they showed the world was cold practicality.

    'Greetings.'

Kai smiled, ready to begin the discussion.

Sunny remained hidden. In fact, he was not planning to reveal himself unless there was no other choice - Kai was supposed to serve as his proxy, asking the questions that Sunny wanted to ask.

Luckily, it was quite difficult to discover Sunny if he did not want to be discovered. Not only was he a shadow, but his presence had also assumed a special quality after he attained Supremacy - it was easily suppressed, disappearing completely if he wished to.

'I don't even have blood now… not in my natural state, at least. Surely, I won't be discovered.'

As soon as he thought that, Death Singer looked around with a confused expression and said, her voice sounding peculiarly excited:

    'This room… smells like death.'

    'What!'

Revel and Seishan spared her glances, while Kai coughed.

'Concerning the newest herd of Nightmare Creatures captured by Lonesome Howl in the south - it is being driven north as we speak and is expected to arrive at the base of the Moonriver Plains in two weeks. I hope that Beastmaster will be ready to enthrall the selected abominations rapidly. The selection this time is skewed in favor of construction work… procuring flight-capable creatures has proven difficult once again…'

    Revel looked at him darkly.

    'Something is wrong here.'

    Kai paused, then asked politely:

'What makes you say that, Saint Revel?'

Seishan was studying the room, her expression calm. When her gaze stopped at Kai, she answered instead of her sister:

'Hel says that this room smells like death. And you are a surprisingly awful liar, Kai - you always have been, ever since the Bright Castle.'

His smile grew a little forced.

Revel raised an eyebrow, her dark eyes full of amusement:

'Your blood has a peculiar scent today, Nightingale. You seem… stressed.'

    Kai forced out a chuckle.

    '…Do I?'

Hidden in the shadows, Sunny let out a mental sigh.

    'Total failure.'

These divine lineages were tough to deal with!

With that, he manifested himself into the human form, took a few steps forward, and calmly sat down next to Kai.

Revel suddenly tensed, while Death Singer stared at him with wide eyes. Only Seishan remained composed, studying him calmly.

    Sunny smiled at her.

'Please stop bullying my best friend. He gets shy around… well, anyone. And also, smelling someone's blood? That's creepy. Keep your beastly habits private, please.'

Death Singer glanced at Seishan and pointed at Sunny with a finger.

    'Sister… I see dead people!'

Seishan smiled silently, while Revel smirked.

'So you never actually died. Why am I not surprised?'

Sunny looked at the Lightslayer and grinned.

'Oh, actually, I did die. But staying dead for too long seemed horribly uncouth. So, I snapped out of it.'

Kai turned his head to stare at him in resigned silence.

    Seishan, meanwhile, bowed faintly.

    'We greet the King.'

    Sunny waved a hand dismissively.

'No, no. The King? That is too formal…'

    He smiled brightly.

'Just call me the Dark Lord.'

Seishan opened her mouth, then closed it, then opened it again.

Finally, she spoke in a carefully neutral tone:

'As you wish, my lord. Judging by your company… shall I take it that Nephis is aware of your return?'

    Sunny nodded.

'If you are asking if there's another Domain War coming up, then no. We have no plans of wrestling for the throne of humanity, she and I. In fact, it's quite the opposite.'

Seishan let out a relieved sigh.

    'I see.'

There was almost a hint of bitterness in her voice.

She lingered for a moment, then asked tentatively:

'If so… to what do we owe the pleasure of meeting you, my lord?'

And at the same time, Death Singer pointed at Sunny again.

'Sister, who is this dead boy?'

She looked at him furtively, then added:

'And why is he so pretty?'

    Seishan exhaled slowly.

'Hel… you promised to tone it down…'

For some reason, Kai looked at her with compassion.

Sunny, meanwhile, stared at the delicate woman with resentment.

'Boy? Listen, auntie, ah, never mind. Why do I even care?'

    He was irritated, a little.

'Our oracle is way better. And younger!'

Seishan glanced at him, then at Kai, then back to him.

    Eventually, she said:

'Hel, you've met him before. This is the Lord of Shadows.'

As much as the Song sisters were shocked to see Sunny, they speedily regained their composure. In truth, they must have suspected that there was something odd about his supposed death - the rest might not have seen it as peculiar, but several of Ki Song's daughters had faced him on the battlefield.

They knew that he would not have gone down easily, especially not after attaining Supremacy.

'Needless to say, you should keep the fact that I am not as dead as everyone thinks a secret.' He smiled at them pleasantly. They glanced at each other. Eventually, Revel shrugged. 'That should not be a problem.'

Sunny glanced at Death Singer dubiously, prompting her to grin. 'No one listens to what I have to say, anyway.' She leaned forward a little. 'Except for you, Lord of Shadows! You are the only one who understands. Say, since you're a Sovereign now… do you need a concubine? I can cook, I can clean! I can prophesize death, destruction, and doom! Oh, and I am very good at…' She suddenly swayed and gave Seishan a reproachful look. Sunny, naturally, sensed the older Song sister gave the delicate oracle a kick under the table.

He barely managed to maintain his composure, his smile turning a little forced. 'No… no, I don't need a concubine.'

Kai nodded seriously. 'He's telling the truth.' Then, he leaned toward Sunny and added in a whisper: 'She's lying, though. She can't cook or clean.'

Sunny stared at him flatly. 'I didn't need to know that.'

      Kai blinked. 'Oh. Right. Sorry…'

Seishan let out a long sigh. 'So, what exactly do you want from us?'

Sunny hesitated for a few seconds. He did not want to reveal too much, and at the same time, there was not much he could reveal - after all, he did not know what Weaver had hidden here, in the Jade Palace. Eventually, he said simply: 'I am searching for something in Ravenheart. Something that must have been hidden here a long, long time ago. Your mother knew this Citadel best, but I can't ask her. So, I am asking you… how well do you know the Jade Palace?'

Seishan raised an eyebrow. 'How well do we know it? Quite well, I'd say. We lived here for quite some time as children. Obviously, most of us were anchored here as Awakened, as well - my other sisters spent much more time in Ravenheart than me, naturally, since I spent a decade on the Forgotten Shore.'

Revel nodded. 'Seishan was what… twelve, thirteen when our mother became a Saint? The rest of us were either the same age or younger. We would spend a few months in Ravenheart every year after that, until the Spell called upon us. Those who survived the First Nightmare would then come to anchor themselves in Ravenheart. So, we've been around this palace for most of our lives.'

Sunny remained silent for a few seconds. 'Were there places Ki Song paid special attention to?'

Revel tilted her head a little. 'Naturally, the Jade Palace hides numerous secrets. There are all kinds of hidden passages, secret enchantments, and strange places here. It is difficult to answer without knowing what exactly you are looking for.'

Sunny frowned. A few seconds later, he asked tentatively: 'Were there maybe areas that you were strictly prohibited from approaching?'

Seishan chuckled. 'Well… Howl and Stalker were forbidden from going near the deeper pools. I doubt that is what you are asking about, though.'

Revel glanced into the distance, thinking. 'The caves were mostly meant for puppets. We were not exactly forbidden from being there, though - there was just no point. Other than that, nothing comes to mind… naturally, it would have been peculiar if we loitered around the living quarters of the clan's retainers.'

Sunny sighed. 'So, nothing really comes to mind?'

Both Seishan and Revel shook their heads.

Death Singer, meanwhile, gave them a peculiar look. 'Goodness me. My sisters are really old now. They don't remember anything!'

They looked at her in confusion, causing the delicate beauty to sigh in exasperation. 'There was actually one room that we were completely, absolutely forbidden from entering. How could you forget?'

Seishan and Revel frowned. Then, their expressions changed, as if they remembered something that had long been forgotten.

      Seishan smiled. 'Oh. Right…'

Revel, meanwhile, scoffed. 'That was a long time ago, but you are correct.'

Sunny glanced at each of them, then leaned forward a little. 'Well, are you going to tell me what that room was or not? An armory? A runic chamber? Perhaps some kind of hidden space where Divine soul shards that power this entire place are secretly kept?'

Death Singer shook her head energetically. 'No! It's the Toy Room.'

Sunny blinked a couple of times. Then, he blinked a few times more.

Finally, he leaned back and asked in a bewildered tone: 'The… Toy Room?'

Seishan nodded. 'Yes. The Toy Room… and before you ask, my lord, it is just that. It is a storage room where various toys are kept - dolls, toy knights, playing sets, peculiar oddities, and the like. Most of it has long turned to dust, naturally, because these toys are as ancient as the Jade Palace. But some of them were preserved surprisingly well, and there are too countless to count.'

Revel smiled wistfully. 'Naturally, it was like a treasury for us when we were children. But… some of those toys were really dangerous. Some were even enchanted with mysterious magic. So, after a couple of incidents, our mother prohibited us from exploring the Toy Room.'

Death Singer glanced at Sunny pitifully. 'Yes. That was after someone… and I won't point a finger at them, even if they are in this room… managed to vanish from the face of the Dream Realm for an entire week. Mother almost took the whole Citadel apart searching for them.'

Seishan smiled. 'So, yes. There was a place we were forbidden to enter, and that place was the Toy Room.'

'A toy room.' That… was not exactly what Sunny had expected to hear.

A clue was a clue, though. He smiled. 'So… can you show me the way to that Toy Room?'
