Chapter 2139: Bad Timing

Cassie asked the question in a calm and composed tone, and yet, the air suddenly seemed infused with subtle tension. Perhaps it was due to the fact that she had stopped walking without giving a reason, or because Jest did not hurry with an answer.

Helie turned around and glanced at them with a look of confusion. Wet strands of her flaxen hair were sticking to her exquisitely beautiful face, so she sighed and lowered her sword to brush it back.

The old man leaned on his cane and studied Cassie with a wry expression. Then, he chuckled quietly.

"Oh, goodness me… I guess I'm not as slick as I thoughtI was."

With that, Jest sighed and shook his head in dejection.

"Comedy is all about timing, you know? That is why I just can't stand diviners. Most of them lack basic decency, if you ask me. People should have at least some tact, right? Who goes around learning the punchline before I even deliver the joke? That's just mean."

He stretched his neck languidly.

"In any case… dealing with seers is such a hassle. I should have known that you'd ruin all the fun, really. My bad! It's just that your lot has grown toothless in the last few years. So, I grew a bit complacent."

Cassie remained motionless, keeping her hand on the hilt of the Quiet Dancer.

"If it's any consolation…"

She paused for a moment, then smiled coldly.

"...You were never funny, to begin with."

Jest's eyes widened, and he looked at her with an appalled expression.

"Hey, now! There's no reason to get nasty!"

Helie interrupted them, her tone full of confusion:

"What the hell are you two talking about?"

Cassie took a deep breath. She was facing Jest, while Helie was standing behind her. Of course, it did not matter much because she was looking at herself through the eyes of both… still, there were limitations to human anatomy. Even if she was aware of what was happening behind her, her joints could not bend backwards. So, she was more vulnerable to attacks aimed at her back.

Still calm,Cassie kept facing Jest as she answered:

"We are discussing how Saint Jest intends to kill us both on this mission."

She paused for a moment, then smiled.

"...Oh, as well as his lack of comedic talent."

The old man scoffed.

"Lack of talent? It's not that I lack talent! It's that you dull people lack the capacity to appreciate it!"

Saint Helie looked at him, her eyes widening a little. Eventually, she asked in disbelief:

"That is what you are refuting? Not the fact that you were planning to kill me and Lady Cassia?"

Jest coughed in embarrassment.

"No, no… don't let her deceive you. She is completely wrong!"

Pausing for a moment, the old man flashed them a smile and added:

"I mean, I was only really planning to kill Song of the Fallen. As for you, Helie, I planned to see how it goes first. Who knows? I might even spare you, depending on what you do!"

Hearing that, Saint Helie frowned and studied him somberly, not saying anything else.

She did not seem that surprised by the sudden revelation — not surprised enough to ask for the reason, at least.

She must have known that after Master Orum was executed as a traitor, her entire clan would come under suspicion and remain on thin ice for a while. Before, Saints had been too precious to waste their lives — that was why Tyris of White Feather had only been exiled to Antarctica for killing a Transcendent retainer of Clan Valor, Cormac.

But now, there were far more Saints walking the world, and there was a war raging as well. Keeping potential traitors around could cost the King of Swords more than it was worth.

After a few moments of silence, Helie finally spoke.

"You know, that's the funniest thing you've said yet."

The old man looked at her with reproach and mumbled in a muffled voice:

"What's up with young'uns these days? It's like they don't respect their elders at all…"

Cassie remained silent for a moment, then spoke in a measured tone.

"I doubt that the King ordered you to eliminate me, though. You led us here entirely on your own initiative, didn't you?"

Jest studied her silently for a few moments, then shrugged.

"So what if I did?"

She frowned.

"Aren't you afraid of the consequences of going against the King's will?"

The old man smiled sheepishly.

"Oh. Well… I guess he'll be quite angry, won't he? But you know what they say! It's better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission. He'll thank me in the end."

Cassie shook her head.

"Is that what you call loyalty, Saint Jest? Aren't you acting too arrogant, assuming that you know what is good for the King better than he knows himself? That, too, is a form of treachery."

Jest simply laughed.

His laugh, however, ended abruptly a few moments later, and he looked at her with cold contempt.

"What do you even know about loyalty, girl? What do you even know about the King?"

He raised his cane and placed it on his shoulder, glaring at her with a dark expression on his weathered face.

"That boy, Anvil… I knew him from the day he was born. I watched him grow, mature, and turn into the fearless ruler he is today. That is why I know what he is capable of better than anyone… but I know what his flaws are better than anyone, too. He is too fearless, in fact. He fears nothing because he values nothing — not even his own life. So, someone has to value it for him, you know?"

Jest smiled.

"The King is not afraid of you, Song of the Fallen, but I am. I might not know what exactly you are scheming, but I can smell a snake when I see one. So, to protect him from your venom, I am going to cut off your head before you can bite."

With that, he looked at Helie and asked in a cold tone:

"So, what is going to be, Helie? Are you going to prove your loyalty by helping me kill her? Or are you going to force me into making you help me kill her? The latter will mean you'll have to die as well, of course. You decide."

As Cassie took a deep breath, Saint Helie hesitated.

I've read the discussion of gentlemen below and so I wanted to say my piece. Nephis rebelled against Gunlag and prepares for battle against Sovereigns not because she finds their rule unjust but because they chose "the wrong way" they didn't try to continue the fight against Spell and nightmare creatures which Nephis considers as a sacred role of every human(literally even if you're a civilian you shall contribute). She doesn't deny that it will bring suffering to those people but she believes that simply defending their boundaries won't allow humanity to survive so they should get all power they can, conquer the dream world and DESTROY THE SPELL. I want to highlighten that Nephis ultimately has just one goal and that's destruction of the Spell. That's all I wanted to say.

He is much more selfish, and isn't fighting for humanity, he's fighting for his own strength. He doesn't mind sacrificing countless innocents if it's the easier path, unlike Neph who would gladly take the more arduous path if it could save more people. Yes she would sacrifice them if there were no other way, but she wouldn't wage a war that could have ended if she herself simply took to the battlefield.

What exactly has Anvil done to show he isn't fighting for humanity ?

Answer honestly is there a difference between what Anvil is doing now and what Nephis did in the Dark Castle and the consequence her action of Killing Gunlag brought upon the dark castle ?

So what if ppl are dying ?.

so nephis understood there was no other way, meanwhile anvil has been STOPPING people from going past saint, literally killing hundreds of not thousands of people with potential just because they threatened his rein. He's a tyrant, simple as that. He doesn't care about other people, just keeping himself at the peak of power, and his own family of course. Nephis has no such desires, as her main goal is beyond simply being the strongest. Gunlag was taken down for the same recent, he cared more about sitting in the highest throne, then he did about finding a way out of the forgotten shore. They're shortsighted and are actively making it impossible or incredibly hard for people who do have the ambition to do anything. You're officially a tyrant when you kill anyone you want to for any reason you decide. The people he kills aren't threatening his life, nor do most have aspirations to. Now that the war has started he gets a pass, but they're taking him down for what he was like before the war.

Anvil being a "tyrant" is the reason nephis and sunny were able to be born before the death of their world. The lack of more supremes at this point is the sole reason why the war realm hasn't being fully consumed. See battle of the black skull in Antarctica where there was a high concentration of power. Saints, masters, and awakened all fighting in one place lead to a category 4 gate. Imagine what happens with more supremes, probably a category 5 if not 6. So spare me if I don't agree with that sentiment.

Gunlag a "tyrant"?. Because he refused to spoon-feed lazy mfs. Gunlag laid down a simple rule, haunt NCs obtain soul shards and use it as your currency for staying in the dark castle. That's beyond fair. The only thing he did wrong is how he treated beautiful women and how he allowed his male subordinate to also exploit them.

You said they are short-sighted, gunlag, maybe. As for Anvil lmao. Anvil isn't short-sighted in anyway, shape/form.
Actually, it's the cohort that is short-sighted saying the "war is stupid". Sacrifice is inevitable in the path the cohort no, the citizens of the War realm are on, more deaths are on the way. And to me whether you are killed by humans/NCs, death is death. Doesn't really matter.

You say this, but no one knows this, Anvil wasn't limiting power to keep higher level gates from opening, which they would've anyways, just slower, he was simply trying to stay at the peak of power, and reign over everyone else. So that point is entirely moot as it was never his intention, just a byproduct.

Gunlag was by definition a tyrant. He kept a monopoly on most resources in the castle and unless you kissed his ass and did whatever he wanted you weren't granted most things you needed to get stronger and continue hunting. He was nigh-unkillable in his armor at the time, but you notice how he didn't go out and slay roaming NC? because he was a tyrant and a coward. The only difference between him and Anvil is at least Anvil isn't a coward.

And for your last point, yes, both Gunlag and Anvil are short-sighted. In a world where one individual can rival the strength of an army, war is incredibly stupid. Why involve countless weak innocent people who don't even know what they're fighting for? as it's been stated numerous times, 2 saints fighting nearby is enough to take the lives of awakened soldiers, so having them on the battlefield is entirely useless. ESPECIALLY from Anvils POV, as you're just feeding corpses to the enemy whose power is to RAISE corpses. Both were short-sighted however, as instead of growing and increasing the power of humanity and themselves, they reached the pinnacle of power just to sit on it like a dragon. Their ambition while commendable isn't what it should be, and their fear gets others killed. if they were so afraid of others reaching their level of power and killing them or taking what little control they truly have, humanity would be far progressed by now.

I don’t agree Anvil does that on purpose so that he can be the peak of power and consolidate his clans power. You saying there would be more war with more supremes is true but it also would increase humanity’s power. If they are multiple powers at work all vying for the same thing the powers would be wary of waging all out war like this because they have another contender. Also that logic doesn’t make full sense Asterion is a supreme and you don’t see him waging war to control people. Not everyone’s domain has to have them ruling over people they can also work like asterion. They just have to rule over some type of concept or be able to exert their authority.

So he is perhaps the one who made Mordorite hate Anvil a lot (his hatred is abnormal even for the abnormals) and cut off the relationship between the father and his son, on the pretext of the king's interest and protecting him from a possible crown prince who wants to be born on the throne.

Actually that does seem likely. It seems like being fearless is Anvils flaw so why would he be so scared to Mordret to the point of sealing him away and trying to kill him constantly? Like bro knows there are people who want to kill him who are close to him already.
