Chapter 1136: Friendly Duel

Morgan moved fast... much faster than she had moved in the Dreamscape. One moment she was standing calmly a dozen meters away from him, the next she was already there, delivering a downward cut aimed precisely at his temple.

Luckily, Sunny was prepared for her.

He sidestepped, raising his shadow tachi to intercept the training sword. The two blades met and bit into each other, connected in a bind. He felt the shock of the impact travel through his bones and pushed the sword away - at the same moment as Morgan raised her hands, changing the angle of her weapon and pushing it forward over the tachi.

The tip of the training sword barely missed his eye.

But now, momentum was on Sunny's side.

He took a step forward, past their two blades, and rammed her with his shoulder. Morgan was thrown back, and a split second later, it was her turn to deflect a cut... only the cut had never come.

Instead of trying to twirl his tachi into a downward cut that was not too different from the one his opponent had delivered a moment ago, Sunny simply kept its position - raised above his shoulder, the blade facing back - and struck her in the face with the pommel.

No matter how fast Morgan was, no matter how strong, the distance between them was too short, and that strike was too swift - better yet, the blade of the tachi remained between his neck and the enemy's sword.

Sunny saw no way for her to escape.

And... she didn't.

Instead of awkwardly trying to avoid the strike, Morgan simply lowered her head and received it with the ridge of her brow, where the bone was strongest. She didn't seem phased by the powerful blow, either. In fact, Sunny felt as if he had struck steel... he almost heard a metallic ring.

The two of them pushed away from each other, ending that first, probing exchange.

Sunny was pleased with himself.

...Morgan seemed pleased, too.

A wide smile bloomed on her face. She briefly touched her forehead, then glanced at her fingers, where a drop of blood was smeared across her alabaster skin. The smile turned into a grin.

"Wonderful. Simply wonderful. Nephis, Cassie, and you... I've been starved of good opponents for so long, and now there are three. And you are all so different, as well!"

She looked like a starving glutton who suddenly found himself choosing between three exquisite dishes.

Sunny raised an eyebrow and glanced at the blind girl, who sat quietly by the wall of the dojo.

'What, that battle maniac got Cassie involved in her training regime, too?'

Noticing his gaze, Morgan chuckled.n0.0

"Cassia might not be the strongest Master out there, but in terms of pure technique, she is among the best. And with how potent her precognition is... fighting her made me exercise skills and muscles that I had never had to exercise before. Which is a rare boon, for me. Why? Have the two of you never fought?"

Sunny lingered for a moment, then shook his head.

"No. Not with swords, at least."

Morgan gave him a curious look.

"Ah... it's your loss."

She raised her sword and prepared to launch another strike. Her smile turned from charming to dangerous.

"I won't hold back, then."

With that, Morgan attacked, turning into a furious whirlwind of steel.

'Curses...'

Sunny had been pleased with his performance in their first exchange, but his satisfaction quickly evaporated. Now that Morgan was done testing him, the onslaught of attacks she unleashed was... simply unreasonable.

In terms of raw physical strength and speed, the two of them were about equal - granted, Sunny was only using three of his shadows to augment himself. He would have had an advantage if he used all five. But then again, his enemy was probably holding something back, too.

In terms of technique, combat intelligence, and experience... to his deep dissatisfaction, Sunny realized that he was still inferior to the Princess of War in that regard.

He had already known that Morgan's skill was near-flawless, honed into a perfect tool by decades of practice and chilling killing intent. She was the epitome of what a Legacy was supposed to be - a person born and raised for the sole purpose of being a fighter. The people who forged her into a deadly weapon were some of the best warriors humanity had to offer, as well.

Subjected to Morgan's inescapable sword, he felt... suffocated.

Back in the Dreamscape, he had been simply crushed. He had felt as if his enemy was not a person, but a hurricane. The thirty-six seconds he had lasted against her seemed like a miracle.

Today, the situation was different. Sunny was at a disadvantage, but he could confidently defend himself. He was older, stronger, and more experienced... his mastery of Shadow Dance had improved a lot, too.

That said... the problem was...

'What the... the hell... she is insane!'

Although Morgan's battle style was too sophisticated and strangely elusive to be absorbed by him in a short amount of time, he did manage to glean a few things about it - enough to be able to predict the general flow of her movements.

However, that flow was flawless, entirely devoid of any vulnerability he could exploit. What was the point of knowing her moves in advance if he couldn't do anything about it? She fought in a way that left him with no choices. It was as though there was a steel cage around him, and its sharp bars were slowly constricting. Soon enough, he would be caught and cut into pieces by them.

Sunny knew that if the enemy had no vulnerabilities, the best way to defeat them was to create some. So, he tried to lure Morgan into several insidious traps - to no avail. She seemed to see straight through them, solving the puzzles he presented in an instant.

Even all this time later...

She was still like an insurmountable obstacle for him. The savage, but simultaneously chillingly calculating deadliness of her perfectly lethal skill was like a work of art.

Its theme was war, violence, and destruction, and Sunny was both the subject and the sole member of the audience for whom that art was being created.

As well as its victim.

At that moment, he realized something...

Sunny realized that this was the worst possible way for him to fight someone like Morgan.

Direct confrontation, contests of strength and skill... all of that was not his battlefield. The most dire battles Sunny had fought, he won with cunning and guile. He employed underhanded tricks, used every single resource available to him in unexpected ways, and tore victories from the claws of fate through sheer force of will and boundless spitefulness.

He was good in a fight, of course. Much better than most. But while being a sharp sword was an important conduit of his will, it was not what made him truly deadly.

'What a... fine realization...'

The question was - how could he turn this duel around and push it toward a direction where he held the advantage? There were ways to overcome Morgan's furious, cold, suffocating might, surely.

A more important question, though...

Was if he even wanted to.

What a lot of people have failed to realize is that everybody's beast core (first soul core for divine aspect users and nightmare creatures) and (only soul core for other aspect users), does not contain the same amount of strength. My aspect might add 10 to my strength and add 50 to the next guy, and that is just from our beast core. Divine aspect user though enjoy augmentation on whatever strength they receive from their aspect while others don't.

Let us try something. We would assign values to the strength that comes from the beast cores of some prominent characters in the novel. I would assign Sunny the weakest value because his aspect isn't really a strength based or enhancing aspect.

    Hypothetically:
Sunny - 14 (shadow is not the most physically potent aspect, and Sunny isn't physically powerful to boot. I mean compare shadow god to War god in terms of strength In your mind, and you get a better understanding.)

Caster - 22 (so with one of Sunny's shadows, Sunny should be more) except Caster finds a way to improve his strength. Dead anyway so it doesn't matter

Nephis - 15 (has a way to augment herself with fire, can compete with sunny core for core)

Effie - 55 (war God aspect (I didn't say lineage), and it means Sunny would need up to 4 of his shadows to surpass her in terms of strength)

Jet - 40 (traces of beast god...Sunny himself mentioned that her broken soul core is so potent, it brims with strength and can match him even while augmented by up to 3 shadows)

Morgan - 45 (war god lineage activated. Her one soul core or aspect or whatever, also fills her with strength even if she has one soul core. Her single soul core gives more strength boon or enhancement than Sunny's single soul core. and he can only augment his current strength (14) in multiples of the num of shadow he is wearing (3) which makes it 42. Looking at it like this explains how she is stronger.)

Cassie - 12 or a bit more (but she is very elusive due to being able to see some seconds into the future. That makes it harder to fight her. Her fighting prowess isn't strength, but being elusive. You have to put more effort to decieve and trap her.

Also fighting isn't just about strength there is skill, cunning, intelligence, experience, which both Sunny and Morgan seem to have more of. What Sunny have going for him though is his cunning and treachery. That is his true strength.

Please don't scrutinize the numbers too much. Like I said they are all hypothetical.

I hope this helps for those that would take the time to read it

this seems all correct, sunnys 5 cores would then give him a maximum hypothetical strength of 5 x 14 when he augments himself with all of them.

but dont the actual cores boost his strength too? right now its as if youre assuming sunny only has 1 core in his soul + 5 strength augmenting shadows from his aspect.

each soul core would boost his BASE strength, with each augmented shadow then further multiplying* that

*this doesnt really sound like it makes sense since it would be more logical if later cores added more strength but this is disproved by sunny hitting some machine with strength 9 and then 18 all the way back in chapter 27

Where was this stated that different people gain different amount of strength based on their Aspects.

Sure different Aspects allow different people to weird different amount of strength but that is only based on Physical Augmentations based Aspects.

The other reason for Strength disparity can be due to stature, muscle mass, mind muscle connection, which plays less and less role the stronger you become.

As for the reason Morgan is equal to Sunny in strength is because her Awakened Aspect Ability is a Physical Augmentation with focus on Resilience. And this was stated in literally the last chapter

What I am saying is whether it be Sunny, Nephis or Aiko herself. The strength boost they get is the same.

The only reason Aiko will be able exert less strength is because she has a weaker mentality anf would be less experienced in pushing her muscles beyond limits like Sunny and Nephis

      the math isn't mathing
for 3 shadow the empowerment should be 4x not 3x
if sunny in empowered by on shadow how much stronger will he be?
      the answer is 2x
so if he has 7 shadows he will 8 times stronger if he uses all of them

What I want to know is where is everyone getting the fact that the cores supposedly give him strength lol, the only confirmed benefit is the shadows and the extra essence
    And also:
Sunny spars without going all out or using most of his advantages/arsenal and doesn't immediately win against one of the best sword using master, that was trained by a sovereign since birth that has a combat oriented aspect
The people here: "Bu-but sunny is so weak bro he needs to be the best he has a di-d-divine aspect and weaver and, and..." Common man, be for real, his aspect isn't even combat oriented, is more of a multi purpose kind of deal, bro is gonna kill one of the saints later and you all are gonna say the same crap the next time they mention neph in a chapter

What really pisses me off is the fact that Morgan praises Cassie for challenging her greatly while she is cake walking Sunny. Cassie does not even fight often while Sunny does. While I do know Cassie is a seer, seeing attacks and being able to stop them are two different things. There’s no way Cassie is strong enough, skilled enough or has enough clarity to make Morgan sweat. So Morgan is either capping her ass off to overpraise her or Cassie is getting the bs Krillin power boost.

    Simple facts 🗣️
This is something that you can't argue with
It's something about way the author writes

For me he isn't making a point what the op said and gave proof was that with his three shadows sunny should have more strength and speed than her at most i can say in resilience he might loose because of her awakened ability but wait that's not true either with bone weave and blood weave added with boosts from shadows he should be even more resilient
It's not just about technique diffrent between them isn't large enough like caster and nephis as sleepers (Though here author didn't even point out why is she equal to his strength with all that cores and boosts)

AUTHOR SIMPLY NERFS SUNNY. It's nothing new at this point. That is my only flaw of this novel

So there is no use in gaining extra cores other than having more essence? I mean there is not much improvement in physicals and he doesn't get the perks of being a tyrant from what we see. So all the pain he goes through is useless everytime he splits the core. No amount of skill can bridge the go between pure strength difference if it is too much.

For Sunny, it gives him the additional benefit of an extra Shadow. We currently only know of three Divine Aspect wielders; no idea if Neph's extra cores gives her any additional powers. We know Mordret's additional cores lets him create more Reflections.

But other than that, they serve as essence batteries, yes.

Yeah I see what you mean now it’s like the author knows Sunny is strong but doesn’t want to depict him in that way if not he may seem like he has no obstacles in his path but it’s contradictory if you’re going to do that then hype up someone like Cassie over him. That slight description of Cassie’s fight with Morgan sounded like she posed more of a threat than Sunny by far which is simply not true even if she’s going all out.

True. Cassie is a scary Oracle because of backstabbing and planning, but not in direct confrontation.
This is basically like having an Uchiha with his Sharingan seeing the attack but being to slow to react like Sasuke with one tail Naruto in the beginning.
It doesn't matter how far you can see if your body can't keep up or you don't have the experience to use it.
And from what was shown Cassie is a good fighter compared to the usual Awakened, but less than most active Awakeners since their Aspects can be used in fights.
But somehow it always gets mentioned what a great fighter she is without ever showing it while she is with the Survivors of the Forgotten Shore even though she should be one of the weakest among them in direct combat.
She would have an advantage if it isn't an direct combat and she can plan ahead.
But most Ascended should be able to overpower her quite easily

Honestly im starting to feel getting more cores doesnt boost his physical strength and speed at all or at least its minimal as hell(checked the wiki its suppose to boost the body too though class increases is mostly towards getting more essence rather than bodily buffs) Because bro has over 4 times the soul shards plus 3x boost. I get she gets enhanced, and she is more skilled but the fact he says they are even in str and speed got me kinda like why is his 3x boost so weak. I get you think you need more shadows but why is your base so weak when you have so many soul shards. Does morgan possibly also have multiple cores who knows. She may have one since she has war god lineage. All i can say is i think the extra cores are just quantitative boost in terms of the amount of soul essense or i guess shadow essence he has. Basically bigger tanks

Sunny isn't about raw strength. He's about perception/agility and cunning.

And while he gets stats multipliers, others get theirs too. Pretty much all characters have some form of self buff

Just look at Jet, who doesn't have 5 cores but instead a single huge one.

I think having multiple cores doesn't directly proportional to greater stats it's like having more essence and more essence is equal to higher saturation of body and muscles therefore jet has such a higher strength because she just over saturates her body with essence while Morgan is very highly skilled in using her essence because she is a master for a way longer time than sunny. Therefore I don't think sunny is weak he is just underskilled

No he’s right Sunny is weak. I don’t think they realize that Sunny has little brute strength because he’s not a brute strength kind of guy. Not only is he small and bony in stature he has little physical strength in base. He was malnourished from the outskirts so it’s not surprising that he’s short and more underdeveloped the he should’ve been. If Sunny had a physique like Roan or even Effie I’m sure he’d have more power. On top of that his essence control and usage might be good but without soul serpent it can’t compare to Morgan’s who been a master for years and trained by a top Legacy clan.
