Chapter 585: Clash

As the Cruel Edge started to manifest itself from swirling dark mist and the helmet of the Undying Chain was being summoned into existence, Sunny had a moment to evaluate their chances.

The result… wasn't too good. He didn't know how powerful exactly Mordret was, but the chances that he was considerably stronger than their enemies seemed to be slim enough to be considered non-existent. Otherwise, the banished prince would not have had to rely on his cunning so much.

From how they were positioned and the little details of everyone's gazes, Sunny knew that Welthe was aiming for Mordret, and vice versa. That meant that he was going to have to face Pierce, while Saint and the Serpent would be tasked with holding back the Echoes.

He wasn't too worried for Saint, who was an Ascended and excelled in defense and durability. The Serpent, however, would have to be really careful…

Sunny was most worried about himself, though. He was not going to underestimate Pierce… the man was not only a Master, but also an elite, a knight of the great clan Valor. He was as formidable as he was deadly.

His Aspect made Pierce resistant to all sorts of attacks, as well.

With this in mind, Sunny commanded two shadows to wrap themselves around his body, and reluctantly sent one to Saint. Ascended or not, fighting against eight Echoes was going to test the limits of her ability.

That was all the time he had to prepare.

Long before the Cruel Edge finished weaving itself from mist, the blood-soaked hall of the somber cathedral exploded with violence and motion.

Welthe's eyes suddenly shone with a hypnotic scarlet light, and Mordret staggered as he was dashing forward. A pained groan escaped from his lips, and his movements slowed down considerably. In the next moment, the body of the female sentinel shimmered and disappeared.

Moving with terrifying speed, Welthe lunged forward, then spun, her slender saber colliding against something midair. The clashing of blades echoed amid the black stones, and two fissures appeared on the layer of blood covering the floor, as if someone was sliding back, pushed away by the force of the impact.

At the same time, the eight Echoes attacked. The creatures moved with the frightening precision of soulless machines, coordinating their assault with enough cohesion to make them a fearsome threat. Although their intelligence couldn't compare to actual humans, the morbid effigies retained enough of the skill of their originals to fight almost as human warriors would.

Each of them possessed an Aspect, too.

Saint collided with their formation like a demon born out of darkness, her kite shield receiving a rain of blows as the Midnight Shard shot forward. The Soul Serpent submerged into the shadows and flowed through them, appearing behind the six advancing Echoes to lunge at the two whose Aspect Abilities allowed them to perform ranged attacks.

And lastly, there was Sunny.

Pierce descended upon him like a siege ram, bringing down his longsword with enough force to make the whole hall tremble. Even augmented by two shadows, Sunny was still unable to compete with the Master in terms of physical ability… but the gap between them wasn't large enough for him to be instantly overwhelmed.

Sidestepping, he received the edge of the enemy's sword on the vambrace of the Undying Chain, angling it in a way that allowed for most of the force to be deflected instead of absorbed, and threw his other hand forward, the ghostly blade of the Moonlight Shard glinting dimly as it appeared out of nowhere, aimed at Pierce's throat.

The Master simply lowered his head, allowing the tip of the stiletto to slide off the cheek guard of his helmet, and pushed the hilt of his sword forward, trying to deliver a crushing blow to Sunny's chest.

Sunny jumped back, not at all disappointed by the failure of his treacherous blow. It had not been meant to do any damage, anyway. It just had to buy the Cruel Edge to finally manifest itself into a material form.

And now, it had.

Sunny thrust the somber spear forward, forcing the enemy to dodge out of the way and give him a moment to breathe.

‘…Strong… the bastard is just too strong…'

Through the insight of Shadow Dance, Sunny could see and understand some of the Ascended knight's battle techniques. Pierce possessed explosive strength and enough agility to channel it into almost inescapable attacks. His understanding of combat was tremendously deep, sharpened by years upon years of relentless training and countless battles.

A warrior of such skill was not going to be led into an easy trap.

His control of soul essence was also on a completely different level. From what Sunny could perceive, the Master was using it with terrifying efficiency, achieving results that he himself couldn't even dream of, especially without the help of Soul Serpent.

That was the core difference between them, and his main disadvantage.

The only advantage he had, really, was the Undying Chain. The transcendent armor was durable enough to withstand a few blows from Pierce, and his high divine affinity only made it stronger. He just had to make sure that he doesn't receive the brutal blows directly.

His body beneath the bleak steel was not as resilient.

Neither he nor Pierce possessed Aspect Abilities capable of dealing direct damage, so this fight was going to be decided by skill, cunning… and the hidden aces they were saving for the right moment.

Problem was, Sunny didn't really have any aces left. At least none that would work on the fearsome Master. He was already going all out…

Sunny had a split second to check on how the others were doing before resuming the deadly dance of death with Pierce. He quickly glanced to the side, and saw the Soul Serpent entangled with the two Echoes, dodging destructive attacks as it slithered around them.

Saint was forced into a defensive stance, being barraged by constant strikes as she somehow managed to deflect all of them with the Patient Avenger and the Midnight Shard.

Mordret and Welthe seemed to be at a temporary stalemate, too… or at least that was how it seemed. The second Master was moving too fast, and their battle was too bizarre to really tell.

Sunny gritted his teeth.

‘Curses!'

He couldn't divide his attention anymore. If he wanted to win against Pierce, he had to focus all of it on him.

And make sure that the bastard had no time to pay attention to anyone else, as well…

Every person here who is complaining about the powerscaling after nearly SIX HUNDRED chapters of it is genuinely just a troglodyte smh
How hard is it to understand things that have been established and LITERALLY told to us?? Ppl complaining and waffling that OoOoO sAinT sHoUlD sOlO 6 aWaKeNeD... Son. Each of the 6 awakened echoes shes fighting were experienced warriors and ON TOP OF THAT they are HUMAN echos so EACH OF THEM has COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. UNPREDICTABLE. AND VARIABLE. ABILITIES. for all you curly-haired baboons know they could have an aspect which controls stone? or shadows? or darkness? you CANT know what ablities they have which is why SAINT would NOT solo IMMEDIATELY.

People really be going crazy about the power system in the comments. What's so hard to understand? Morgan was a master, who was at the peak of what ascendents can be, and pierce is a master, who's good, but not great. That's why Sunny is able to fight him. And Saint herself is an ascendant, which doesn't mean she can easily kill 8 awakened echos or on her own, and maybe these echos are of skilled fighters as well. Also, it dosent say that Saint is losing, just that she is unable to attack.

Saint is almost like sunny, being able to fight creature above her rank, she shouldn't struggle with 6 awakened echos at all as an ascended demon especially since shes twice as stronger after being buffed by sunny's shadow. Serpent is handling the other 2 so it's 6.

So no its just inconsistent power scaling.

Those aren’t just echos, they are human echoes which makes them different from
Normal awakened monsters as they have aspects of their own. Just having aspect changes the game and difficulty of a fight as u have to handle 6 different aspects without knowing their true abilities or what they can do. And I wouldn’t say saint is exactly like a master as she doesn’t have essence to circulate like them and she kind of have abilities but not at the level of a aspect, more like enchantments on a memory.

I'm not sure if you understand why being ganged up on I'd bad, no matter how strong you are. It doesn't matter if you can instantly kill these guys individually if as soon as you try to go on the offensive, everyone else attacks you while you aren't defending. It's just how combat works, and saint is wielding a melee weapon which makes it extra hard.

I totally forgot his divinity evolved so I guess this now offers more defense than Onyx armor.

The power system is really inconsistent. Morgan was able to overwhelm him despite being handicapped while he can stand against pierce toe to toe? also why is the saint, being an ascended, struggling against echoes (most likely awakened or dormant) despite the enhancement of shadow?

Yeah it is true that this is a little bit inconsisten. I guess that Morgan was a top master (she even went to the dreamscape event as representant of all clan Valor) while Pierce is probably a strong master but not a top.
Sunny also has the Undying Chain that, as he said, due to its rank allows him to deflect hits

Don’t remember him using shadows against Morgan but maybe wrong and he also gained an extra core and better loot. Sunny used a dormant sword against Morgan which was crazy. But anyway Morgan is the princess of valor clan and one of the top masters. Like comparing a normal awakened to Nephis tho Morgan doesn’t have a divine aspect, she has the legacy of the valor clan. Also Morgan’s aspect is just broken, if it weren’t for her aspect, Sunny woulda won after he broke her sword. Not win but been in advantage

Obviously you can't compare someone at the pinnacle of the master rank to just some random master. Just cause they're the same rank doesn't mean they're equal in strength. That's just common sense I fear.
Again js cause Saint is a higher rank doesmt mean she can defeat EIGHT echoes, you dumbass, istg its like you niggas fail to pay attention, RANK IS NOT ABSOLUTE!! nor is it a deciding factor in battles, there are obviously outliers in everything.😭

You are calling others dumb but you sound dumb as well

Saint was already capable of killing 2 fallen beast above her rank while she was an awakened. Currently she is an ascended demon and is buffed by sunny's shadow, making her twice as strong and is fighting 6 awakened echos not even 8 lol. It should be easy for her to dispatch them.

What's the point of having ranks to aspects if similar ranks =similar power. His is a divine aspect with experience of forgotten shore. And 8 of those human echos can use different aspects. Saint will defeat them for sure but, she needs some time.

When fighting Morgan he used worse armour, worse weapon, worse mastery of shadow dance (for most of the fight), couldn't use his aspect, couldn't do anything that would reveal his identity, was tired cause he was just in a fight, she was probably more skilled than this dude because she was stated to be a rather highly skilled ascendent, couldn't use all his memories like the dagger that instantly appears and lastly he didn't have the upgraded version of blood/bone weave yet

And regarding the echoes, humans in this novel are shown to at least somewhat outclass beasts of the same rank thanks to their battle skill, aspects and intelligence, while they are echoes and saint isn't a normal beast, the do still outnumber her and as such I would expect them to be able to hold her of, at least temporarily

ok let me explain something you've read before. remember what modret told sunny about nightmare? not all awaken are the same neither saints or master all because of what they had to go through and their training.
secondly not aspect matters alot sunny is of the divine rank and his shadows gives him equal footing with some masters not the apex masters
lastly when it come to combat mastery few can compete with him due to shadow dance but that does not mean the strength don't varies

and that's what is happening here. not everyone is equal in strength don't worry you will read when sunny soloed 13 saints lol has a saint

As for the saint and echoes, saint isn’t losing, she just isnt given a opportunity to attack yet as they are hanging up on her and u must rmemebr these are human echoes of top awakened, which also means they have aspects. We already know a human that’s awakened is way stronger than a monster that’s awakened.

Morgan is an ELITE of the ELITE, while Pierce is good but not an outlier. We have already been told that Sunny with 2 shadows wrapped and with 3 cores is nearly equal to a newly born master. Combine that with the fact he has a saint (transcendent) level armor and the fact hes using an ascended weapon against Pierce, while he had 2 cores and a DORMANT weapon against Morgan.
And Saint isn't one-tapping the echoes bcs the echoes aren't just nightmare creatures, they are AWAKENED HUMANS. which means each of them have DIFFERENT & UNPREDICTABLE ASPECTS & ABILITIES. not to mention EACH OF THEM HAS MEMORIES which we know bcs when Sunny got a human echo it showed that he could give it memories.

I like most of your comments Mr.Gehrman but god was your reading comprehension awful sometimes
