Chapter 146: Giant Hyaenodon |
Luo Gang's expression changed drastically. He swept a glance around, roughly estimating no fewer than ten Giant Hyaenodons!
"Get up! Get up!"
Cao Biansheng ran incredibly fast, sprinting along the corridor, his palms slapping against the wooden window boards along the way.
"Get up quickly! Beasts are approaching, get up! Hurry up and get up!"
Luo Gang's face turned ashen. Usually at night, he would always arrange people for night watch.
Today, because they had just merged with another residential complex, and the survivors from that other complex were relatively friendly, he had only arranged for two students and himself—three people in total—to keep watch.
He had been careless!
There was no time to regret the mistake, because the Giant Hyaenodons downstairs, realizing they had been discovered, no longer bothered to hide.
"ROAR!!!"
One Giant Hyaenodon tried to leap up to the second-floor corridor.
Its coarse claws scraped a long scratch along the wall.
"Thud."
It landed on the ground, its thick front paws bracing against the floor.
The Giant Hyaenodon shook its head, letting out a dissatisfied cry.
"Damn it, these beasts."
Cao Biansheng rushed into the room at the end of the corridor, grabbing two Long Spears from the wall inside.
By now, students were running out of the rooms along the corridor behind him, splitting up in succession. Some ran up to the third floor, others headed to the Fourth Floor.
Cao Biansheng narrowed his eyes, staring at the Giant Hyaenodons prowling below. He swung his arm forcefully, and the Long Spear shot out like a blur.
It plunged heavily into the back of one Giant Hyaenodon.
The spear sank in a small section. The Giant Hyaenodon cried out in pain, but its movements weren't significantly hampered.
Cao Biansheng cursed inwardly. These bastards were really fucking thick-skinned.
This thick hide could rival those giant Wild Boars.
Several Giant Hyaenodons downstairs began to move. They stopped randomly bumping into things and gathered together, sniffing the ground with their short snouts. One of the smaller ones suddenly raised its head, its ear tips pricking forward, its crimson pupils locking onto the wide, wooden-blocked staircase in the middle of the Teaching Building.
It moved forward, its claws slamming against the wooden door behind the blockage. Wood splinters flew, and the thick wooden board was deformed by the impact.
Behind the door, a male student who had rushed over raised a Long Spear and thrust it through a gap toward the Giant Hyaenodon's head. He felt like he was stabbing into a plank of wood.
The Giant Hyaenodon swatted a paw at the spear, nearly snapping the wooden shaft.
But soon, more students came down from upstairs to support them. One after another, Long Spears formed a spear formation, thrusting out from the gaps left in the barricade. They quickly stabbed the Giant Hyaenodon in front of them until it was covered in blood.
"ROAR!!!" The blood-soaked Giant Hyaenodon was slapped aside by another, crashing to the ground.
From behind it, one Giant Hyaenodon slowly walked out, noticeably larger and more robust than the others around it.
It was likely the leader of this pack.
Both in size and presence, it clearly stood a head above its peers.
The Giant Hyaenodon leader was cunning. Seeing the humans above continuously shooting arrows and throwing stones, making its packmates look pathetic, it let out a great roar and swaggered directly into the first-floor corridor.
The other Giant Hyaenodons, hearing their leader's call, all ran into the corridor. Some barged into the first-floor classrooms.
Now, hiding directly below, they had moved into a blind spot.
The attacks from above temporarily ceased.
One Giant Hyaenodon ran over obsequiously, wanting to lick the leader's paw, but was slapped away.
"It seems these beasts aren't stupid," Cao Biansheng frowned deeply, but his gaze grew increasingly sharp.
The first floor of the Teaching Building had no cover, no obstacles, and had many doors and windows. Defending it wasn't cost-effective, so it had been abandoned, used only to pile up useless junk and firewood.
Generally, after a conflict, most wild beasts would retreat.
But this pack of Giant Hyaenodons had a stronger desire to attack than expected.
Since they weren't retreating,
then they would fight!
Cao Biansheng lifted his Long Spear, jumped onto the second-floor balcony, raised the spear high, and shouted defiantly, "Brothers and sisters! These beasts actually want to eat us? We are the terrifying upright apes!"
"Hu!"
The many Students gathered in the corridor raised their weapons, rhythmically pounding the ground, their throats emitting low roars.
The many voices converged into a wave of sound, like an ancient war chant.
......
"What's that noise?"
Qin Ziwen was awakened by the noise.
He heard the shouts coming from outside.
He went to the living room. The balcony area had been rearranged by him. All the expanded space had been moved behind the guest bedroom, now revealing the open-air balcony again.
Because he had already activated the Safe House function, he didn't need to worry about anyone sneaking in during the night while it was active.
On the balcony, Du Yu was looking toward the North Side. "Sir, a battle is happening over at the Teaching Building."
"Let me see." Qin Ziwen went back to the bedroom to get the binoculars.
Adjusting the central focus wheel, the focal length gradually sharpened, finally landing on the Teaching Building.
On the second floor, third floor, even the Fourth Floor, some Students were holding weapons, shouting loudly.
That wave-like sound was coming from their mouths.
The female students were mostly on the third and fourth floors, while the male students were on the second and third.
Looking down through the binoculars, on the first floor, over a dozen... strangely shaped beasts were prowling.
"Seems like Giant Hyaenodons." Qin Ziwen's lips curled upwards. The mission target could actually deliver itself to his doorstep.
The Students' war chant woke up many residents in the residential complex. Figures could be seen standing on balconies watching.
"Sir, should we go hunt these Giant Hyaenodons?"
"Of course we're going, but we can't just charge in recklessly."
By comparing them with the surrounding buildings, Qin Ziwen could determine that these Giant Hyaenodons' body lengths were basically between 3.3 and 3.8 meters, shoulder height between 1.4 and 1.5 meters. They had robust limbs and huge heads—a standard group of big-headed dolls.
Big-headed dolls like these usually had terrifying bite force.
"There's also a leader." Qin Ziwen noticed that among this pack of Giant Hyaenodons, there was one that looked stronger than the others—the leader.
This leader's body length was estimated to be over four meters, shoulder height close to 1.8 meters, taller than an adult.
"Sir, if we want to hunt this pack of beasts, I don't recommend a frontal encirclement. It's best to use terrain advantages," Du Yu suggested.
"I know. I have two plans. First, have the Crowned Eagle carry Gasoline barrels and pour the Gasoline on the ground, burning this pack of Giant Hyaenodons. But the downside is the people are also in the building. It's easy to burn the building too, and the meat burned by Gasoline can't be eaten." Du Yu asked, "What's the second plan?"
"The second is to go to Building 4. Building 4 is closest to the North Gate, and it's only separated from the Teaching Building by one courtyard wall. The distance is only thirty or forty paces. Use bows and arrows from the windows of Building 4 to shoot at this pack of Giant Hyaenodons. It would be best to lure a few of them over, then use the narrow terrain advantage of the stairwell to split them up and defeat them separately."
Du Yu said, "Sir, I think the second strategy is better."
He had seen the power of Gasoline. The first floor of the Teaching Building still had some junk piled up. The slightest mishap could start a huge fire.
