At this point he's just starting to cultivate seriously. Before that he dabbled a bit in talisman making because he found a daoist inheritance quite early in the story, but there wasn't any qi to support daoist cultivation so at the beginning he was sticking to martial arts like everyone else. At the stage the raws' at, spiritual energy is coming back and the old sects from 3000 years ago are coming out of the woodwork. People and animals are going crazy left and right, the plot is getting interesting. Unless the author shits the bed majorly the next 300 chapters should be good

In martial arts iirc it's the typical tempering of the skin, muscle, bones, viscera, then acquired realm, and innate. But the MC breezed through them and the MTL was confusing, so I'm not sure that's exactly how it goes. The MC pretty much wins every time anyways.

In terms of immortal cultivation the author hasn't explained much yet. He didn't do anything too original in his world building so far so I guess it should be the usual; gathering qi, compressing it, building a core, nascent soul, etc
