Michael didn't want to die. He didn't deserve to die. After a lost battle with cancer that started only a year after he retired, he'd lived what many people would call a full life, but it wasn't enough.

He wanted more time.

Time with his wife. Time with his kids. Time with his grandkids.

When he found himself drawn toward the light, he fought his way away from it. Unfortunately, that didn't take him back to the life he wanted to live.

Reincarnated in another world, Michael is forced to be a Penitent, a soldier in the country he was reborn into in order to pay a debt to society he owes for taking the life of the child whose body he inhabits.

It's not the life he wants, but it's the only one he has.

***

- An Isekai with light litrpg elements

- MC will gain powers similar to those of a paladin

- Book 1 spends a lot of time in a military academy. MC does not stay a child for very long.

- Story will be a slower pace than my others.

- MC may not be to everyone's taste. He feels guilt for his actions that may seem unreasonable and is very human. He will grow, but it will take time.

I have read this novel and it's a hit and miss for me somehow. I have read this long ago when it has only released upto book 2.
Firstly this is a good novel with worldbuilding and attention to detail and character driven story. What i hate in this story was how main character is treated and how he felt himself responsible for the death of the child, bruh get real. Enough of my rant, if you get past this attitude of mc of blaming himself you will find this story interesting and worth your time :pepeg_11: :pepeg_38:

Apparently, this is praised on Royal Road. I started it in the past but yet to go far.

Eh, don't trust the praise on that site. The writers can remove reviews and ban people from commenting and reviewing for what ever reason. Most of the writers end up just reporting the reviews every day until they are removed.

Apparently the mods on that site know it is an issue.

This story is a personal favourite of mine and written by an author I rate very highly. I’ve been asking for it to be uploaded onto the site for ages so the satisfaction I felt from seeing it on the homepage was… exquisite pepe_bliss

Penitent is a reincarnation story where the main character is not your typical young loner but rather an elderly man who died naturally after living a full life. Michael is reincarnated into a world at war within itself as well as against dimensional invaders.

Yet unlike most stories Michael’s situation is neither unique nor hidden; he and others like him are identified at birth and sentenced to serve as Penitents within the military. Their crime? Manslaughter of an unborn child.

At it’s core, the story explores guilt and accountability. The protagonist is presented as someone who recognises they are in essence an inadvertent body snatcher who has shattered a young family. Yet he is not someone who is beyond sympathy. This moral ambiguity is one of the work’s greatest strengths. Seersucker resists the temptation to simplify this moral quandary, instead allowing it to remain unresolved in a way that feels both frustrating and deeply human.

In contrast, the action is dynamic and often explosive, delivering bursts of intensity without overwhelming the narrative. These scenes serve to sharpen the stakes while reinforcing the protagonist’s internal conflict instead of drowning it out.

The author’s world-building feels masterful with the creation of a society shaped by war, reincarnation and institutionalised punishment. Concepts like the Penitents are not just background details but foundational to how the world functions and how characters are treated within it.

The prose leans toward a more descriptive and immersive style, using vivid language to ground scenes and enhance the reading experience. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation are polished and never break immersion.

Overall, Penitent is a gripping and well-crafted story that balances explosive action with a thoughtful exploration of guilt and accountability. It’s a must read and a personal favourite of mine.

Is it just me or does this novel appear to lack ambition? It doesn't feel like the author is trying to write a story that he hopes would be popular. It isn't trying to advertise itself at all and the plot seems relatively simple. There's no mention of anything that could be compelling, in fact at the end of the synopsis the author even mentions a few things that could dissuade someone from reading.

    How curious. peepo013

To me this synopsis is very compelling. It seems the author already know what to do with his characters and I therefore assume there's going to be less flailing around in writing. It seems like it could be grounded, simple, but impactful.

      Idk, i like it

IM sus of anything made in RR or a western author. They have annoying quirks.

RR novels are often commercialize slop. And western author often had ideas where the don't want the MC to win to eat the icing and cake. They want to deconstruct thing to make them seem smart. Else it just very vanillla, or very pc, or normie type shit

lol, they do nothing but advertise themselves? Most chapters had a shared promotion with another book, even if they had nothing in common.
