Chapter 374: Ten Thousand Miles of Burning Sands

Li Fan and Huangfu Song had vastly different levels of strength and status. Naturally, threats carried risks. However, due to the strange phenomena that occur after a cultivator’s death, it was difficult to kill and silence someone without being discovered. Moreover, Li Fan had now become a role model for the world, living under the spotlight. Even if Huangfu Song wanted to act, he had to consider the consequences. Huangfu Song was certainly not prepared or determined to exchange his life for Li Fan’s. Compromise was inevitable.

Therefore, although this move seemed dangerous, it was well within Li Fan’s plan.

“The Great Five Elements Subworld…”

Li Fan pondered for a moment, closed his eyes, and began to connect with Lu Xuejing, whom he had not contacted since he subdued her. The Fisherman’s methods were indeed incredibly mysterious. Even in the thick white fog, he could communicate with his subordinate from an unknown distance at any time.

“Master…”

Feeling Li Fan’s summons, after a moment, Lu Xuejing’s timid voice sounded. Without any small talk after a long time of no contact, Li Fan directly inquired about her recent situation. After understanding her general circumstances, Li Fan thought for a while and then asked about her mother’s whereabouts. The loyal Lu Xuejing told him everything truthfully.

“My mother has been very busy recently, constantly patrolling various subworlds.”

“These are places I’ve never heard of. Sometimes she even loses contact for a long time…”

Listening to this, Li Fan slowly formed a plan. Before ending the contact, Li Fan comforted and praised the young girl. Lu Xuejing was extremely excited, her soft voice very pleasing to the ear. After instructing her on the planned matters, Li Fan reluctantly ended the communication.

“Whether the plan succeeds or not depends on my luck,” Li Fan thought to himself. Fortunately, Li Fan’s luck was not bad. The next day, when Huangfu Song was about to depart from Duanzhang Immortal City on the Dust Crossing Boat, Li Fan received a message from Lu Xuejing. A gleam of light flashed in Li Fan’s eyes as he flew onto the Dust Crossing Boat.

“What do you want now, boy?” Huangfu Song’s expression was unfriendly as he looked at the intruding Li Fan. He dismissed the others and took Li Fan to a closed cabin. His cold eyes fixed on Li Fan, waiting for his explanation.

“To compete for rankings, I want to make a desperate effort. Other aspects have been taken care of, but now I need senior’s help one more time.” Huangfu Song was stunned, “So soon?” He narrowed his eyes, observing Li Fan carefully. After a moment of thought, he asked, “What do you want me to do?”

Li Fan said in a low voice, “I want senior to change course and take me to the Green River Deep Gorge as quickly as possible.”

“Green River Deep Gorge?” Huangfu Song was slightly surprised. “Why do you want to go there?”

Li Fan did not answer, instead he continued with his request: “And, you need to find a legitimate reason so that it doesn’t look abrupt to others.” Huangfu Song sneered, “You sure have a lot of demands.”

He did not refuse outright but fell into a long silence, seemingly contacting someone. Li Fan stood still, waiting patiently. After a cup of tea’s time, Huangfu Song nodded slightly and looked at Li Fan again.

“You’re in luck. I have a friend currently overseeing the construction of an array at Green River Deep Gorge.”

“The construction is nearly complete, and his next destination is close to mine.”

“We haven’t seen each other in a long time, so I’ll meet him and catch up,” Huangfu Song said succinctly.

Li Fan was delighted and bowed, “Thank you, senior.” Huangfu Song put away his smile, “Don’t play games with me. I’m helping you because I want to see who your backer really is.”

Li Fan replied seriously, “Senior overthinks. I am a lone wolf, with no backing to speak of.”

Huangfu Song, seeing that Li Fan was still pretending to be ignorant, did not argue further. He simply sneered.

“How long will it take to reach Green River Deep Gorge?” Li Fan asked nonchalantly.

“If we’re quick, two days; if slow, seven days. It depends on any unforeseen circumstances along the way,” Huangfu Song answered impatiently. “Just wait patiently. Since I promised you, I won’t mess around.”

Li Fan nodded slightly and thanked him again.

The sudden change of destination for the Dust Crossing Boat surprised the cultivators on board. However, since it was Huangfu Song who commanded it, they did not dare to voice any objections. The Dust Crossing Boat turned into a red light, piercing through the devouring white mist and moving rapidly. After leaving the white mist barrier, it first flew to the nearest Quyang Immortal City and used the teleportation array there to reach a barren land filled with scorched earth. Then, it continued to speed towards its goal.

“This is the Ten Thousand Miles of Burning Sands, and Green River Deep Gorge is deep within,” Huangfu Song explained as he noticed Li Fan curiously observing the outside scenery.

Even with the array’s barrier, Li Fan could still feel the intense heat from the outside. It was a pure, destructive force that seemed to burn everything in its path. The sky and earth seemed to be filled with dark red energy. The ground was cracked, and the sky seemed to be burning with flames.

“A thousand years ago, this place was also a good place. Unfortunately, it has now turned into this hellish sight,” Huangfu Song sighed, moved by the desolate scene. “If it weren’t for the uniqueness of Green River Deep Gorge, the alliance would have abandoned this area long ago.”

“What is special about Green River Deep Gorge?” Li Fan asked, following up on Huangfu Song’s words.

“You don’t know?” Huangfu Song was genuinely surprised. “Then why are you in such a hurry to go there?”

Li Fan showed an innocent expression, making Huangfu Song’s face twitch. However, his good temper kept him from getting angry. Instead, he explained again, “Green River Deep Gorge itself isn’t special. But it produces a greenish stone that has a strong suppressive effect on spiritual energy.”

“For us cultivators, without special countermeasures, approaching it would cause all our spiritual energy to be suppressed, making us as weak as mortals.”

“This stone is called Spirit Transformation Stone by the alliance.”

Upon hearing this, Li Fan felt that the stone seemed familiar, as if he had seen it somewhere before. But he couldn’t recall it. Li Fan realized that it might be related to the vanished avatar’s experiences, so he didn’t dwell on it.

After thinking for a while, Li Fan asked again, “I once read about an ancient stone called Juexian Stone. It seems to have similar effects to the Spirit Transformation Stone.”

“Are they the same thing?”

    Chapter 374 — 万里炎焚滩

    The Ten-Thousand-Li Scorched Expanse

    ---

Though Li Fan and Huangfu Song were both cultivators, their power and standing were worlds apart.
To threaten such a man was to dance upon the edge of a blade.

Yet Li Fan was no reckless fool.
He understood that, first — in this realm, when a cultivator died, death left omens and traces. One could not easily slay another without consequence.
And second — as a man who had become a symbol of the righteous path, living ever beneath the spotlight of the world’s gaze, his disappearance would stir too much noise.

Even if Huangfu Song wished to silence him, he would have to measure the price.
To trade his own life for Li Fan’s — that was not a bargain the old cultivator would make.

Thus, what appeared a reckless gamble was, in truth, a step placed carefully within Li Fan’s design.

    ---

    “The Five Elements Grand Grotto-Heaven...”
Li Fan’s eyes flickered with thought. Closing them, he focused his spirit and began to reach out — across mist, across distance — to Lu Xuejing, the young woman he had subdued long ago but scarcely managed since.

The methods of the Fisherman [渔父 — an enigmatic ancient being who taught Li Fan’s mental transmission art] were truly profound.
Even amidst this suffocating white fog, Li Fan could send his consciousness through the void and speak to one bound under his soul mark.

    > “Master...”

Came her soft, timid voice, like a tremor in a still pond.

Li Fan did not bother with pleasantries.
He questioned her directly — about her whereabouts, her surroundings, and her recent activities.

Lu Xuejing, ever obedient, answered truthfully.

    > “Mother has been busy of late,” she said quietly. “She’s been traveling between many 洞天 [grotto-heavens — self-contained realms formed by great cultivators], places I’ve never even heard of. Sometimes she vanishes for days, and no message reaches me.”

Li Fan’s gaze darkened slightly. The pieces in his mind began to align.

When their talk drew to a close, he softened his tone, offering her a few words of praise and comfort.
Lu Xuejing’s voice trembled with joy; even her breath grew light and sweet, as though she might melt beneath his faint approval.

Once he had instructed her on what she must next prepare, Li Fan severed the link.

    > “The plan can only go so far,” he thought. “Whether it bears fruit — that rests with fate and my own fortune.”

    ---

Fate, it seemed, favored him that day.

The next morning, as Huangfu Song prepared to depart Broken-Palm Immortal City [断掌仙城] aboard his flying vessel, the Dust-Crossing Ark [渡尘舟], Li Fan received a new soul message from Lu Xuejing.

A glint flashed in his eyes. He rose at once and soared toward the ark.

“Boy, what are you doing now?” Huangfu Song growled, his expression dark as Li Fan landed uninvited.

He waved away his attendants, sealing the chamber in a cocoon of silence.
His cold gaze locked upon Li Fan, waiting for the explanation.

    > “To climb the ranking, I must gamble everything,” Li Fan said evenly. “All preparations are complete. Now I need the senior’s help — one last time.”

“Already?” Huangfu Song arched a brow, suspicion flickering. After a long, measuring look, he muttered:

    > “Speak. What is it you want?”

“I wish for the senior to alter our course — and carry me with all haste to Hualingjian [化灵涧 — Spirit-Melting Ravine].”

“Hualingjian?” Huangfu Song blinked. “What business do you have there?”

Li Fan did not answer, his voice calm but firm:

    > “And it must be done under proper pretext. I cannot afford unwanted eyes upon this.”

Huangfu Song sneered. “You’ve no shortage of demands, do you?”

Still, he did not refuse outright.
He fell silent — eyes half-closed, spirit flickering faintly as though communicating through divine sense.

Li Fan waited, still as a statue.

After a full stick of incense, Huangfu Song exhaled, then nodded faintly.

    > “You’re in luck. A friend of mine happens to oversee the array construction at Hualingjian. The work there nears completion. His next post lies close to my own route. I’ll tell him we should meet — it will serve as reason enough.”

Li Fan’s heart brightened. Bowing deeply, he said,

    > “Then this junior offers his gratitude, Senior Huangfu.”

“Save your empty courtesies.” Huangfu Song’s tone turned sharp again.

    > “I’m not helping you out of kindness. I simply want to see what kind of ‘backing’ you truly possess.”

“Senior overestimates me,” Li Fan replied lightly. “I am but a lone wanderer. What ‘backing’ could I have?”

Huangfu Song’s lips curled into a smirk — half amusement, half disdain. He didn’t bother arguing further.

    > “How long will the journey take?” Li Fan asked, calm as ever.

“Fastest, two days; slowest, a week. Depends if the heavens themselves get in our way.”

“Rest easy,” he added curtly. “Since I agreed, I’ll not deal you false.”

Li Fan bowed once more, silent but sincere.

    ---

The ark’s sudden change of destination drew whispers among the crew.
But with Huangfu Song himself at the helm, none dared question it.

The Dust-Crossing Ark streaked across the sky, a crimson streak tearing through the Devouring Mist Sea [噬元白雾].

Once free of that pale abyss, they veered toward Quyang Immortal City [瞿洋仙城], where Huangfu Song used the city’s great teleportation array to send the ark to a charred wasteland, endless and barren.

There, they flew onward — toward their true goal.

    > “This,” Huangfu Song said, gesturing out the window, “is the Ten-Thousand-Li Scorched Expanse [万里炎焚滩].
    Hualingjian lies deep within.”

“The fire-aspect energy here rejects all others. Even space itself twists — no array can safely open a portal. That’s why we must fly.”

Even through the ark’s barrier wards, Li Fan could feel the heat — not merely warmth, but a force of pure annihilation, a power born to consume heaven and earth.

The land below lay cracked and blackened; even the sky shimmered crimson, as though burning.

“Thousands of years ago,” Huangfu Song sighed, “this was once a paradise. Now, only this ruin remains. Were it not for Hualingjian, the Alliance would have long abandoned it.”

“What makes Hualingjian so special?” Li Fan asked.

“You don’t know?” Huangfu Song gave him a look of disbelief. “Then why the rush to go there?”

Li Fan merely spread his hands, wearing the expression of one caught bluffing.

The old man’s jaw twitched — his temper nearly snapped — but he managed to swallow it down, and continued his reluctant explanation.

    > “The ravine itself isn’t remarkable. What’s rare lies beneath it — a vein of green-blue stone, called Hualing Shi [化灵石 — Spirit-Dissolving Stone].”

    > “That stone suppresses spiritual energy. If a cultivator draws near without protection, his qi will fall silent — body as frail as a mortal’s.”

    > “Because of this trait, the Alliance prizes it greatly.”

Li Fan’s eyes flickered. That name... that feeling — familiar.
Had he not encountered such a stone before?

He searched his memory — and realized.
It must have been through one of his vanished incarnations [分身].

He let the thought fade, murmuring instead:

    > “In ancient texts, I once read of a stone called Juexian Shi [绝仙石 — Immortal-Severing Stone]. Its effects sound... identical. Could the two be one and the same?”
