Chapter 360: The Original Culprit of the Tragedy

“Thud! Thud! Thud!”

It seemed that the mention of the words “Heavenly Doctor” from Li Fan’s mouth thoroughly triggered the emotions of the Twisted Monster. It forcefully banged its head against the ground repeatedly, creating cracks in the hard, desolate earth.

At the same time, it continuously emitted intermittent sobbing sounds, with blood tears streaming down its face.

Despite the monster’s repulsive appearance, this scene unexpectedly made Li Fan feel a strange sense of pity for it. “Did the Heavenly Doctor really commit the massacre here?”

In an instant, an image of a kind, neighborly old man surfaced in Li Fan’s mind. On the surface, he appeared benevolent and kind, with a smiling face, but his actions were horrifying.

Li Fan felt a shiver of fear. He recalled the scene in the Cloud Water Celestial Palace when the Qin Hall members howled in anger upon seeing the statue of the Heavenly Doctor. It seemed that the fall of the Cloud Water Celestial Palace was indeed related to the Heavenly Doctor.

“But where is this place? Why did it become a spatial fragment within the white mist barrier? And why did the Heavenly Doctor indiscriminately slaughter these cultivators?”

Li Fan calmed his shock and looked at the Twisted Monster, still kowtowing incessantly. It had survived the Heavenly Doctor’s massacre and lived alone in this lost domain for so long. Li Fan’s proud Great Five Elements Annihilation Sword couldn’t even scratch its surface, indicating its immense strength.

Yet now, it seemed like a commoner suffering a great injustice, kneeling before Li Fan, who seemed like a just official.

As an official for many years, Li Fan was quite familiar with such scenes. Why was this happening? It was not because Li Fan was stronger than the Twisted Monster. Instead…

“Did it mistake me for someone else?”

“Yes, that must be it. As for why the Twisted Monster mistook me…”

In Li Fan’s limited reincarnations, this kind of mistake had happened once before. To verify his suspicion, Li Fan circulated his Golden Core and summoned a strand of Heavenly Annihilation Energy, condensing it into a sword. Sure enough, the Twisted Monster became even more agitated, its cries echoing louder, as if it would break the ground.

“Heavenly Annihilation Sword, Fisherman Elder.” Li Fan’s eyes flashed as he looked at the monster kneeling before him. “It is begging me because it sensed the Heavenly Annihilation Energy in my Great Five Elements Annihilation Sword and mistook me for the master of the Heavenly Annihilation Sword.”

“Even the Fisherman Elder almost mistook me; this monster has been trapped here for who knows how many years, relying only on instinct. Such a mistake is understandable.”

“From this, it seems that the Fisherman Elder was likely a leader among the fallen cultivators in this lost domain. The Heavenly Doctor’s massacre must have involved a confrontation with him.”

“The Heavenly Annihilation Sword is incomplete, and the Fisherman Elder became amnesiac and insane, possibly due to the Heavenly Doctor’s actions.”

But soon, Li Fan felt something was off. If the Heavenly Doctor was truly responsible, having lived for so long and becoming much stronger, he would have known about the Fisherman Elder’s existence. Why not eliminate him completely instead of letting him survive? Or was it, as Li Fan previously speculated, that the Fisherman Elder had become a strange entity that couldn’t be eradicated?

“Heavenly Doctor…” Li Fan squinted his eyes. He was not a forgiving person. The Heavenly Doctor had once discovered his true form through the art of “observing, listening, questioning, and feeling,” broke the Tianxuan Mirror’s protection, and attempted to capture him alive. That terror still lingered in Li Fan’s mind. However, due to the vast difference in their power, Li Fan had to bury his desire for revenge deep within.

Now, realizing that the Fisherman Elder might be the Heavenly Doctor’s nemesis, Li Fan felt a stir of excitement. “Perhaps in my next life, I can cause him some trouble.”

“If the Fisherman Elder retrieves the Heavenly Annihilation Sword and seeks him out during the battle between the Heavenly Doctor and the Ancient Master…” Li Fan’s eyes gleamed as he quickly devised a rough plan, drawing from his experiences in several lifetimes.

With a cold laugh, he temporarily set the matter aside and turned his attention back to the Twisted Monster. “The Black Death Talisman can last another day; perhaps the hope of escape lies with it.”

Retracting the Heavenly Annihilation Engery, Li Fan tried to calm and communicate with the monster, expressing that he had been deceived and trapped here by the Heavenly Doctor and was searching for an exit to seek revenge outside. It took nearly half a day for the monster, with its lost intellect, to understand Li Fan’s meaning. It stopped kowtowing, became quiet, and its head rotated continuously as if pondering something. Soon after, it crawled away, occasionally turning its head to indicate for Li Fan to follow.

In the chaotic domain near the Twelfth Relic, disorienting forces still prevailed. In Li Fan’s perception, the leading Twisted Monster occasionally appeared behind him or suddenly flashed forward, continuously changing positions unpredictably. Li Fan closely followed, adjusting his direction according to the monster’s movements.

After half a day, the Black Death Talisman’s black light had grown increasingly faint, as if it might extinguish at any moment. Following the Twisted Monster deeper, Li Fan seemed to reach the center of the lost domain. In a round pit, as if struck by a meteor, many figures stood. They were lifeless corpses, but unlike those Li Fan had seen before, these bodies had undergone eerie transformations.

Some had turned to stone, resembling statues. Others had turned to jade, glowing brightly. Some had become like trees, covered in cracked bark. The most horrifying were those that had undergone insect transformation. Though appearing normal at first glance, a closer look revealed they were hollow, composed of countless tiny black maggots, still wriggling after many years.

The closer Li Fan got to the center, the more pronounced the transformations became. No longer were there standing corpses but instead, strange substances adhered to the ground.

The Twisted Monster’s pace slowed, its body trembling subtly, indicating its fear of something ahead. It stopped at a certain point, refusing to move forward. After calming it, Li Fan ventured alone, his guard up.

Contrary to his expectations, there was no fearsome monster in the pit’s center, only a broken stone lying quietly. The stone once bore inscriptions, now barely visible. However, Li Fan could make out traces, hinting at the character “Chaos.”

Chapter 360 – The True Culprit Behind the Massacre

    “Dong! Dong! Dong!”

The moment the words “Heavenly Physician” left Li Fan’s lips, the twisted monster before him grew violently agitated.

It began to smash its head against the ground again and again, each impact echoing like thunder.

The lifeless, hardened earth split open with every strike, fissures crawling outward like the veins of some ancient beast.

From its mouth came a low, broken wailing—blood and tears mingling as they streamed down its distorted face.

Though hideous beyond measure, the sight before Li Fan stirred within him an inexplicable sense of grief and pity.

“So… this massacre was truly the work of the Heavenly Physician?”

In his mind surfaced the image of that kindly old man—the very picture of benevolence and wisdom, smiling like a gentle elder from one’s own village.

Yet behind that kindly visage hid unspeakable horrors.

A chill coursed through Li Fan’s heart.

He recalled how, in the past, when the disciples of Yùnshuǐ Tiāngōng (Cloudwater Celestial Palace) saw the statue of the Heavenly Physician, they had all erupted in a collective wail of rage and despair.

It now seemed certain—the fall of Yùnshuǐ Tiāngōng had been inseparably tied to the Heavenly Physician.

“But then… where exactly is this place? Why has it become a fragment of space adrift within the white mist barrier?”

“And why would the Heavenly Physician slaughter these cultivators without distinction?”

    “And furthermore…”

Li Fan calmed his turbulent thoughts and gazed once more at the creature—its body grotesquely bent, still kowtowing without pause.

It had survived the Heavenly Physician’s slaughter, enduring countless years alone within this bewildering domain.

Even Li Fan’s proud Five Elements Extinction Sword could not so much as scratch its hide.

That alone spoke volumes of its terrifying strength.

Yet now, it knelt before him like a wronged commoner begging justice before an incorruptible magistrate.

Having once served as an official himself, Li Fan was no stranger to such a scene.

    Why was this happening?

It was certainly not because he was stronger than the creature.

No—there could be only one explanation.

“It’s mistaken me for someone else?”

“Yes… that must be it. But why would it mistake me for another…”

In his many cycles of reincarnation, Li Fan had once experienced a similar case of mistaken identity.

To test his suspicion, he drew upon his Golden Core, channeling a trace of Heavenly Fiend energy (Tiansha) and shaping it into a sword.

At once, the creature grew even more agitated. The faintly familiar aura seemed to strike a deep chord within it.

Its cries rose in pitch, echoing through the desolation, its head pounding the earth with such force it threatened to bore a pit straight through.

“The Heavenly Fiend Sword… the Fisherman Elder.”

Li Fan’s eyes gleamed as he looked down at the monster kneeling before him.

“So that’s it. It mistook me for the master of the Heavenly Fiend Sword, because it sensed traces of the same fiendish power within my Five Elements Extinction Sword.”

“Even the Fisherman Elder himself nearly mistook me once. For this creature—trapped here for who knows how many centuries, its mind long corroded—such confusion is only natural.”

“In that case, the Fisherman Elder was likely one of the leaders among the fallen cultivators of this realm. When the Heavenly Physician slaughtered them all, he must have clashed with him directly.”

“The Heavenly Fiend Sword’s incompleteness… the Elder’s madness and loss of memory—it all bears the mark of the Heavenly Physician’s doing.”

Yet something about it didn’t sit right.

If it truly had been the Heavenly Physician, then after so many years, his strength should have grown far beyond what it was back then.

He would surely have known of the Fisherman Elder’s existence.

So why not eradicate him entirely?
Why allow him to linger here, half-dead, through the ages?

Could it be, as Li Fan once speculated, that the Fisherman Elder had become something other—a being of eerie transformation, beyond even the Heavenly Physician’s power to destroy?

    “Heavenly Physician…”

Li Fan’s eyes narrowed to slits.

He was not a forgiving man. Once, that same Heavenly Physician had discerned Li Fan’s true form through the arts of observation, inquiry, and diagnosis, piercing through even the protective veil of the Heavenly Mirror to seize him alive.

The terror of that moment was etched deeply into Li Fan’s memory.

But their strength had been worlds apart—he could only bury his hatred deep within his heart, waiting for the day it might bloom.

Now, discovering that the Fisherman Elder might be the Heavenly Physician’s mortal foe, that long-suppressed fury stirred once more.

“Perhaps, in the next life,” he murmured, “I might find a way to cause him… some trouble.”

“If the Fisherman Elder regains the Heavenly Fiend Sword, and should he encounter the Heavenly Physician amid his battle with the Master of Rites… heh.”

A cold smile flickered across Li Fan’s lips as a plan, drawn from the experience of many lifetimes, began to take form in his mind.

Then, setting those thoughts aside, he turned his gaze back upon the twisted creature before him.

“The Black Death Talisman will last only one more day. My only hope of escape… might rest with it.”

Retracting the Heavenly Fiend energy, Li Fan attempted to soothe the creature, speaking slowly and clearly.

He explained that he, too, had been deceived and trapped here by the Heavenly Physician, and now sought a way out—to exact vengeance upon that old monster.

The creature’s mind was nearly gone; it took the better part of a day for it to grasp Li Fan’s meaning.

Finally, it ceased its bowing. A strange stillness came over it as its head twisted this way and that, as though deep in thought.

Then, without warning, it began to crawl outward, its body scraping across the ashen ground. From time to time it looked back, gesturing for Li Fan to follow.

The domain surrounding the Twelfth Ruin still shimmered with chaotic spatial currents.

Even with his spiritual sense, the creature’s form would flicker—now ahead, now behind, shifting unpredictably through distorted space.

Li Fan followed closely, using it as an anchor, constantly adjusting his course through the warped void.

Half a day later, the black light crawling across the surface of his Black Death Talisman had grown faint, flickering like a dying flame.

They had ventured deeper and deeper, into what seemed to be the very heart of this bewildering realm.

There, within a vast circular crater—as if struck by a fallen star—stood countless human figures.

They were corpses, lifeless as all the others Li Fan had seen before.

    Yet these were different.

Their forms were no longer lifelike; the semblance of humanity had long faded.

Some had turned to stone, their bodies frozen like statues.

Some had become jade, glowing with a crystalline luster.

Others had grown bark-like skin, their bodies cracking like old trees.

But the most horrifying of all were those who had insectified.

At a glance, they seemed human still—but upon closer look, their bodies were hollowed out, composed entirely of countless black worms.

Even after endless years, the swarm still writhed ceaselessly within their husks.

The closer they came to the center of the pit, the more grotesque the mutations became.

Soon, there were no standing corpses at all—only viscous, nameless matter clinging to the earth.

Sensing something dreadful ahead, Li Fan noticed that the twisted creature’s pace had slowed, its body trembling almost imperceptibly.

At a certain point, it halted completely, refusing to go further.

After a few murmured words of reassurance, Li Fan stepped forward alone.

His vigilance rose to its peak, ready to call forth his true power at a moment’s notice.

But contrary to his fears—there was no monstrous being waiting at the crater’s heart.

Only a fragment of shattered stone lay there, silent and still.

Once, words had been carved upon it, but now they were nearly worn away.

Even so, Li Fan could faintly discern the traces of a single character.

    The word was—“Chaos” (乱).
