Chapter 67: Disguise

As he continued killing, Bai Mo increasingly felt his spirit grow weary. He was constantly searching for targets, then, upon finding creatures resembling zombies, spending a few seconds confirming if they were survivors. If they were survivors, he'd move on to the next target; if not, he'd crush them with his psychic power, taking their corpse core. It was entirely repetitive, mechanical labor.

"I can't kill anymore. My spirit won't be able to take it if I keep going. Furthermore, my brainstem has completed its Spirit Energy transformation thanks to the nearly endless supply of corpse cores. There's no great meaning in continuing to kill." After spending an entire day killing thousands of zombies like a combat robot, Bai Mo began to reflect on his day's actions.

Though his body felt not a trace of weariness, the mental fatigue still compelled him to lie on the ground, motionless, staring blankly at the sky. Rarely, he thought of absolutely nothing, simply gazing at the starry expanse above.

It was now deep into the night. Bai Mo lay on the ground, counting the stars one by one, a completely different person from the executioner he had been earlier. Only the few puddles of blood around him spoke of the day's madness.

"One hundred twenty, one hundred twenty-one, one hundred twenty-two..." Bai Mo counted casually, not caring if he repeated numbers. He simply wanted to do something different, something unrelated to cultivation or slaughter.

"Someone's lying on the street over there. Let's go take a look." The survivor squad, having regrouped with Austin, continued their search for companions. They ended up seeing Bai Mo, lying on a large street, counting stars.

Bai Mo had long detected their presence with his divine sense. But after a quick glance, he couldn't be bothered with them, nor did he expect them to initiate a conversation.

"Hello, are you injured?" The leader, walking at the front, asked upon seeing Bai Mo lying on the main street. He hadn't seen Bai Mo in person and didn't know he was the executioner of countless zombies. Austin, who remembered Bai Mo's appearance, was walking at the back and didn't immediately recognize him in the deep night.

"No, I'm just lying here watching the stars."

"You must be a survivor too, right? Why don't you join our squad to search for more survivors?" The leader continued.

"In the entire western half of Rome, there are forty-eight people who have retained their sanity. You have twenty-two here. Go that way; I saw eight more there today." Bai Mo pointed to the intersection on the left.

"Aren't you coming with us?"

"He's that person." Austin recognized Bai Mo as she reached the middle of the team. She then took a few steps and whispered into the captain's ear.

"Which person?"

Austin said nothing, simply pointing to the puddles of blood around them. Immediately, the leader's expression changed.

"Sir, forgive the interruption. We'll go that way to find our companions." Leader Ma Ke Wei Ci quickly followed Bai Mo's indicated direction and left. He really didn't want to stay too long with someone who could calmly kill hundreds of zombies that had been human just a few hours earlier.

Bai Mo, hearing their whispers with his divine sense, paid no mind to their thoughts.

However, the other team members hadn't quite registered what was happening.

"What's wrong, Captain Ma Ke Wei Ci? Why the sudden rush to leave?"

"Aren't we waiting for the new team member?"

Ma Ke Wei Ci ignored his team members' questions and hastily prepared to leave. Austin was just as hurried. As the person who had spent the most time in Bai Mo's presence, she was terrified that this utterly unpredictable madman might dissect her at any moment.

"Wait! I think I recognize you! You're the person I saw in my retrospection!"

"What's going on, De Bu Luo Yi? You know him?" Several people around them asked.

"The night before last, a bizarre murder occurred where the victim's body exploded from within, tearing his flesh apart. When I was ordered to investigate the case, I used my retrospection ability at the crime scene and saw the killer's back—it was identical to him!" De Bu Luo Yi, a criminal special police officer, loudly declared his deduction like a famous detective. All he lacked was a pair of black-rimmed glasses, pointing at Bai Mo and declaring, "You are the murderer!"

By the time Austin and Leader Ma Ke Wei Ci reacted, it was already too late to stop him.

"This idiot teammate!" Both cursed De Bu Luo Yi silently in their hearts, while simultaneously preparing to flee. They didn't want to stake their survival on the murderer not silencing witnesses, especially since everyone present had heard that he had previously killed another living person in the same brutal manner.

After hearing De Bu Luo Yi's words, many who were unaware of the truth cast questioning glances at Bai Mo. Because De Bu Luo Yi was also a somewhat famous special police officer in Rome, and his ability was especially effective for solving cases, therefore, few doubted his words.

Bai Mo, meanwhile, slowly stood up, looked at De Bu Luo Yi, and asked, "You're a police officer?"

"Yes."

"Do you have any research findings on that diagram from that night? Although I've roughly guessed its function, I'd still like to hear the opinion of you professionals."

"You answer me first: did you kill that person?" De Bu Luo Yi pressed relentlessly.

Ma Ke Wei Ci and Austin, meanwhile, were admiring De Bu Luo Yi's courage—daring to confront a murderous maniac with explosive combat power. Truly worthy of a special police background.

"Not really. He blew himself up in the end. Now it's your turn to answer my question."

"I can only tell you that our on-site ability user team didn't come to any useful conclusions."

"One of the nuclear blast centers was that alley. That's all I have to say." With that, Bai Mo picked up his suitcase, which contained experimental equipment and samples, and turned to leave.

Seeing Bai Mo turn to leave, Austin and Ma Ke Wei Ci both breathed a sigh of relief.

Suddenly, Bai Mo stopped, turned his head, and asked a question.

"You were the one observing me the night before last? I seemed to sense someone observing me that night."

"Yes. What do you want?" De Bu Luo Yi had a bad feeling. "Though you're strong, don't even think about causing trouble! There are over twenty people here!"

De Bu Luo Yi was still unaware of Bai Mo's true combat power. He still believed there were over twenty ability users present. With his mind still stuck on the idea that "there's strength in numbers," he firmly believed Bai Mo wouldn't dare to act against him, facing such an overwhelming disadvantage of one against twenty.

While he was fearless, Austin, who knew that Bai Mo killed zombies more easily than one cut grass, was so terrified her heart leapt into her throat.

"One more question: what's your ability?"

"Many people know it: my ability is to see scenes that occurred in a certain place within a specific past timeframe." De Bu Luo Yi continued.

"What if I do intend to cause trouble?" Bai Mo said with a smile.

"And I, who survived the nuclear blast, have gained new powers that even I fear!" Seeing the conflict was unavoidable, De Bu Luo Yi simply tore off his pretense of peaceful resolution. He intended to use his newly acquired powerful strength to completely defeat this man, whose mere back in retrospection had once made him vomit blood, to erase the shadow in his heart.
