Chapter 475: Space
"Boom!"
"Boom!"
"Boom!"
...
After the light that obscured everything flashed, a series of massive explosions followed, their colossal shockwaves even sweeping away the dark clouds for several miles around.
The void in the cloud cover allowed sunlight to spill onto the ground, and if one didn't look at the surface, it would almost seem like a scene teeming with life.
To achieve the optimal effect, the personnel responsible for energy output even chose to push the system into a mad overdrive, not caring if it meant destroying everything.
Because they had, and only had, one chance.
Regardless of success or failure, their human bodies could not be preserved, and the probability of their fragile souls surviving the violent spirit energy storm seemed extremely slim.
The empty, gaping hole bore a striking resemblance to a colossal maw attempting to devour everything.
Looking into the hole from its edge, one could faintly discern the architectural outline of the former Xierdesi laboratory, but it was nothing more than an outline.
The high temperatures and impact force, comparable to a massive fuel-air bomb detonation, utterly obliterated everything related to the experiment, as everyone had approached the plan with a mindset of either success or noble sacrifice.
"The experiment succeeded?!" After an unknown amount of time passed, the first consciousness to awaken from the chaotic state finally recalled their original objective.
Then came the second...
Followed by the third...
...
"Everyone, we truly succeeded! We're still alive!" Upon perceiving their current state, a few optimistic individuals had already begun to celebrate.
"Just being alive isn't enough. First, we need to figure out what state we're in. That's strange, why do I keep feeling cold?"
Those whose heads were spun by the so-called success were ultimately a tiny minority. Most, after regaining consciousness, began to probe their utterly bewildered circumstances.
After all, only a small part of their objective had been completed. With their life forms having ascended into Void Worms, the primary goal of the plan was to find a suitable world to make Bai Mo 'ascend'.
He was too powerful, having completely shattered the balance of the human world. Furthermore, his elusive and capricious madness made many feel unbearable.
Since he couldn't be eliminated, they might as well let him ascend to another world and cause trouble for others...
It was precisely with this calculation in mind that the Worm Project was initially able to secure astronomical funding from the American government. Even if it didn't sound particularly reliable, it was at least a theoretically feasible plan.
...
As for the theoretical life form known as the Void Worm, its primary purpose when first conceived was to search for worlds existing in other dimensions.
Some spatial researchers believed that the universe's spatial dimensions extended far beyond three, and that another world composed of three-dimensional space might exist at an extremely close high-dimensional location.
Considering one dimension down, if a two-dimensional space were seen as a sheet of paper, then three-dimensional space would be a book composed of countless stacked sheets. The three-dimensional distance between two sheets could be very small, like two adjacent pages in a book, yet creatures of the two-dimensional world would forever be unable to cross this minuscule gap.
If the three-dimensional distance between two two-dimensional spaces could be very small, then they conjectured that the four-dimensional distance between two three-dimensional spaces could likewise be very small.
It was with such a worldview that they gradually conceived the Void Worm, enabling it to "drill" a hole between two sheets of paper, achieving an effect similar to a wormhole.
Originally, this kind of 'black technology,' whose very possibility was unrealistic to verify, was essentially a purely theoretical conjecture for a human civilization that hadn't even left Earth.
However, now, with the metaphysical assistance of the unknown source of spirit qi, they had truly managed to tinker out a physical entity named the Void Worm.
After some modifications, such a theoretical entity ultimately became the hope for many who sought to turn the tide.
...
After what felt like a considerable amount of time, the various consciousnesses within the Void Worm gradually adapted to pure spiritual vision and the mode of "movement" without hands or feet, relying solely on thought.
Although they still hadn't grasped the precise situation, they were already capable of limited "activities".
Their current state was akin to a thousand-headed serpent sharing a single body, yet each head possessed an independent consciousness, controlling its own separate portion of the body.
According to their hypothesis, each head of this Void Worm should be able to traverse different interstitial world layers, while the worm's body itself would exist in the gaps between worlds.
"Where did this head of mine drill into? Why are there living beings floating everywhere?" Suddenly, a voice seemed to have discovered a new world.
"Countless wandering souls... Have we already drilled into another world layer?"
"Since we're the first to discover this world layer, how about we give it a name first?"
"What do you think of 'Soul Realm'?"
"Seems a bit too ordinary."
...
A few consciousnesses that were relatively close to each other, like children who had found new toys, completely forgot their objective after escaping the threat.
They didn't know how vast the interior of the Void Worm was, but the thousands of consciousnesses seemed to maintain a certain distance from each other, though of course, this was all just their perception.
"This... this is the coordinates for a truly distinct interstitial world layer." One of the consciousnesses, finally recalling that he was Tang Na De, instinctively "conjured" a green ball of light from an unknown location.
Even though he, who had ended his own existence directly before Bai Mo, hadn't been actively obstructed by the other party, the light enveloping his entire being was slightly distorted by Bai Mo's unintentional fluctuations, much like how immense mass can warp spacetime.
It was for this very reason that Tang Na De only now awoke and recalled his mission.
"To all of you who have become a part of the Void Worm, I am Tang Na De, the original person in charge of this project." He emitted his unique spiritual fluctuation.
"Father!"
"Dad!"
Those who reacted first, naturally, were Tang Na De's two children. Within the Void Worm, whose size was impossible to describe, they didn't know how to search for Tang Na De.
"Commander!"
"Mr. Tang Na De!"
...
Next to react were his familiar subordinates.
"Mm."
As for the other researchers, most offered nothing more than a faint acknowledgement.
Their participation in the Worm Project was primarily driven by a desire to explore the mysteries of space and to test the possibility of traversing into other world layers. They didn't particularly care for Tang Na De, who was single-mindedly focused on exiling Bai Mo, even though the vast majority of the funding came from his lobbying efforts.
PS: I lost a lot these past two days... so I took some time to adjust my mood ORZ.
