Chapter 119-2: Tower Defense Game (2) |
In Qi Sheng’s view, the second and third waves of charges delivered extremely eye-catching performances.
Especially the newly debuted special-effect God-Arrow build.
Facing densely packed Black Wind warriors, the Scatter Arrows bow’s split shots could easily hit targets, applying Bind, Venomous, and Blade Seal effects to each target struck.
It was a relay suicide run anyway, and many players were damage outputting with Extreme Speed active, aiming to max out damage in a short time.
The ferocious damage output slew swathes of Black Wind warriors, and large vitality globes flew toward the players, merging into their bodies.
All kinds of cheers sounded in the team voice channel, and many Black Wind warriors who had been left at low health in the previous wave were successfully finished off in this one.
But the Black Wind race’s combat forces were also continuously rushing to the battlefield.
Part of them were warriors stationed near the coastal warships, and another part were warriors dispatched to investigate the surrounding environment.
The brief advantage was quickly reversed by the Black Wind warriors under Heiyu’s lead, and the players fell into a bitter fight.
God King’s tactics were divided into six waves, basically one wave every 10 minutes, adopting a cyclical combat strategy.
When the six-wave offensive ended, the domain-damage output players of the first wave would have revived and reentered the battlefield.
The main point was fighting nonstop for 24 hours. No matter how strong the Black Wind race was, they were still ordinary lifeforms, unlike the Black Tide and the Swarm that could play an infinite loop tactic with them.
The current disadvantage did not mean anything; their torment had only just begun.
The second and third waves soon met with a team wipe under the Black Wind race’s counterattack. Upon receiving the news, God King immediately had the fourth-wave players begin preparations.
This wave was composed of two builds: spellcasting damage output players and spellcasting utility players.
As the Black Wind race won the battle and had not even had time to clean up the field, a new wave of descent arrived.
It opened with swathes of Light Shield covering the landing site, followed by Bind inherited soul immobilization. The spellcasting damage output players brewed their spells to launch the offensive.
When the Light Shield was broken, Divine Wings, who was commanding this charge group, gave the order to open fire.
Instantly, Inkflame fireballs intertwined with lightning, and a raging elemental flood swept outward from the landing point toward the Black Wind warriors.
A large number of Black Wind warriors were engulfed by the elemental flood, turning into charred corpses and dying on the spot without even having time to struggle.
“Hahaha, two kills at the start, awesome!”
“This Extreme Speed inherited soul is too fierce. Emptied my HP and MP in 13 seconds. Waiting to die now. Qi Eater just can’t bring it back.”
“Our spellcasting charge group is indeed the strongest wave. How can the others compare to this lethality? Brothers, drink your potions and go again. Show the momentum of our version answer.”
“It’s amazing, but without the Gargoyle build holding the front, we probably can’t withstand a single charge from the Black Wind race. Hopefully we can contain inherited souls that help restore mana and health soon. Everything about the spellcasting class is great, except the potion drinking is too crazy. The cost to play is a bit high.”
“I’m dying of laughter. That Black Wind warrior actually tried to dodge my guided fireball, and I smashed him straight into the dirt with consecutive fireballs for an instant kill. Extreme Speed is just too strong.”
When the spellcasting charge group’s ferocious damage output ended, what followed was the Black Wind race’s brutal counterattack.
Although the damage output was powerful, the frail spellcasting players had no power to resist under the close-quarters pressure of the Black Wind warriors and were quickly slaughtered.
But when only about one-tenth of the spellcasting group remained, the fifth-wave charge group airdropped.
This wave was composed of monster-build players.
Compared to the previous waves, the monster charge group’s momentum was astonishing. They startled the Black Wind race the moment they took the field.
When the white light passed, the beasts were unleashed, and the ground shook violently.
The Black-Scaled Serpent, cloaked in black armor and over ten meters long, proactively charged toward the area where Black Wind warriors were gathered, rampaging along the way. Every Black Wind warrior it collided with was inflicted with the Venomous trait and fell into a poisoned state.
The Roaring Giant Bear, five meters long and nearly three meters tall, launched a feral charge as the white light faded, its sharp claws slamming straight at nearby Black Wind warriors. From time to time it let out deafening roars, trampling the battlefield with abandon.
Bonefire players, three meters tall, were wreathed in dark green flames like emissaries of hell. They opened their mouths to spew pillars of Inkflame and entered death-harvest mode.
Players in the Gargoyle primary form had muscles knotted like iron. Standing there, they resembled a black iron tower. When they charged, they became an indestructible battlefield bulldozer, clashing head-on with the close-range slashes of Black Wind warriors.
Players in the Thunderburst inherited soul’s primary form turned into a huge lightning sphere wreathed in arcs, rolling rampantly across the battlefield.
—
The scene of the great beasts unchained was far more visually impactful than a monster VFX movie.
Many players on the forum and in the Colorful Mist space, watching via the livestreams of the off-field charging players, all cried out in amazement at the spectacle.
“This wave of charging has to get a Best Visual Shock award. Too brutal. The Black Wind battle line was smashed to pieces.”
“Hahaha, that Thunderburst bear is so wild. It bit a Black Wind warrior and, imitating a beast tearing its prey, kept shaking its head. Too savage.”
“Damn, I suddenly want to play the monster build. It looks so fun.”
“I do not want to play it, but I want to capture one as a mount. Riding it would be insanely cool. I am so jealous of those who have brothers playing the monster build. I hope my cousin grabs a slot soon. If he will not be my mount then I will go to his house and beat him until he cries.”
—
After five consecutive waves of offense, swathes of Black Wind warriors lay dead.
This sight made Heiyu’s eyes nearly split.
He could not understand what was going on.
There were no spatial runes on the ground of this clearing, so it was clearly not a descent by teleportation.
There were no torn spatial fissures in the sky either, so it could not have been a cross-space descent.
So how did this group of life-forms appear at all?
Such a bizarre descent had exceeded Heiyu’s understanding. He could only keep shouting to organize the race to launch counterattacks.
Support from the race kept arriving, but racial members were also dying continuously in the process.
The pleasant mood of easily taking the Colorful Mist Coast was wiped clean. Heiyu’s eyes were blood red, and a blazing fire roared in his heart.
The rampage of the great beasts lasted for 17 minutes. When the beast charge group exited, the sixth wave of offense arrived.
This wave featured players in the custom mode.
The Arms Dealers Guild’s free sweeping fire, the Breaking Bad Alliance’s throws of lethal poison flasks, the Demonic Fishermen’s lightning-infused rods sweeping across the field. Players from the Three Great Demonic Sects and some bizarre Star Vein combinations all took the stage together.
For example, after activating Flowing Shadow clones, splitting into a dozen clones shouldering pickaxes to form a mining brigade, then activating Extreme Speed and whirlwinding the pickaxes.
Or a Flowing Shadow clone plus Mud Fiend (Dissolve) battlefield sprayer, creating dissolution pools on the battlefield while ignoring friend or foe.
—
With the appearance of the sixth-wave custom-mode players, the joy meter instantly maxed out, and forum viewers burst into constant laughter.
“Good lord, that pickaxe clone brigade wearing straw hats made me spit my drink. Treating the Black Wind race like a mining vein, huh. And they even embedded the Extreme Speed inherited soul. The pickaxes are almost smoking. One wave of damage output and the durability bar hits zero, hahahaha.”
“The Arms Dealers are really rich. Bullets and bombs like they cost nothing, just tossing them nonstop.”
“The Duskhaze bomb build is so fun. Sneak over, drop the bombs, then run. So thrilling. Assassin players just learned something.”
—
Although the combat style was bizarre, the custom charge group’s combat power was not weak.
All kinds of eccentric Star Vein combinations, completely at odds with mainstream play, dazzled forum players, who realized Star Vein combos could be assembled like this as well.
Compared with the proper tone of the previous wave, this wave’s combat style was extremely abstract.
All sorts of cheeky tactics emerged in an endless stream. The only drawback was the total lack of organization, and many players’ damage output would even catch allies in the blast.
This wave lasted less than 10 minutes before it ended.
Meanwhile, the first wave’s ‘domain damage output group’ had already arrived one after another in the Colorful Mist space to prepare, waiting only for God King’s command to launch a new round of charges.
At this moment, Qi Sheng, behind the scenes, could not help chuckling.
Under the players’ relay offensive, the Black Wind race had been forced to turn their invasion battle into a tower defense game.
But unlike a tower defense game, the Black Wind race had no upgradable defensive structures and could only be continually bled of combat power under wave after wave of player charges.
When a new domain damage output group descended, despair filled Heiyu’s eyes.
He had no idea how much combat power the other group still possessed. If this continued, more and more racial members would die in battle.
Realizing that the Black Wind race would be finished if this kept up, he let out a roar, eyes bloodshot.
“All Black Wind warriors, retreat with me to the coast.”
Hearing Heiyu’s order, the warriors, mentally exhausted from the continuous charges, all began retreating toward the coast.
Players watching the livestream saw this and immediately refused to have it.
Their torment had only just begun, and the charging groups had only finished the first cycle. How could they possibly allow them to escape? The players scolded them one after another in the voice channel.
Seeing this, God King decisively issued a pursuit order, requiring all players on standby in Emperor’s Mound Village to enter the Colorful Mist Coast space, fight their way out, and pursue the retreating Black Wind race, no longer needing to attack in wave mode.
God King then personally descended from the Colorful Mist space and began organizing an ad hoc kill squad.
Just as the Black Wind race had easily taken the Colorful Mist Coast at first, the players’ united waves of charges also crushed the Black Wind race in a short time, forcing them to choose retreat.
God King also issued a new combat order at this moment.
“All assassin-build players activate Duskhaze and go around to the rear. Cut off their retreat. If you cannot, then go make holes in their ships. These brats came with resources. Are we really going to let them take them away again?”
