Chapter 45

I ran up to the old tree.

However, two Stone Golems stood in my path.

“Get out of my way!”

I kicked the knee of one to make it lose its balance, and then I pushed the other one in the opposite direction.

They both went rolling down the hill.

And while they were still alive, I left them for now.

“Ahh… The ogre…uh, what was your name?”

“Old Elvan. It’s me, Golan.”

“That’s right. If you are here, that means we succeeded in slowing them down.”

“Aye. I heard the news and came at once. Damn it, this was reckless of you.”

“Well, as I watched from this hill, those ruffians came to the town. And it occurred to me that you would be in trouble if they caught you from the back.”

“But that doesn’t mean you should put yourself in danger! Just look at you…”

The trunk was bent partway.

“My children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and even great great grandchildren are here. It would be very bad if the enemy took over.”

“Still, old man. When the hell did you turn into an Elder?”

“It happened suddenly when the enemy attacked. …I am glad that I was able to see your face in the end.”

“In the end… Old man. Hey, old man…”

“Ah, Golan. Can I ask you a favor?”

“What is it, old man? I’ll do anything.”

“I want you to bury our bodies in the park.”

“Old man…”

“And pour plenty of water over us. Or we won’t be able to take root.”

“…Huh?”

“I likely won’t be able to talk for the rest of the year, but I think my roots should be strong again next year.”

“Uhh…old man?”

“What?”

“Um…are you fine? Your body is broken.”

“I would die if I was left like this for several days. But otherwise, it isn’t too bad. After all, we are tree fairies.”

“Then why did you say ‘end’?”

“Well, aren’t you going back when the war is ended?”

“…Uh, yeah.”

I guess it was a different kind of end then.

Tree Fairies were very resilient. It was often said that those with less attack power were more remarkable. And perhaps it was true in a way.

“Golan. I killed the two that came rolling down. But there were five others that got away.”

“Old man, you’ll have to wait a while to be buried. I need to clean this up first.”

“Aye. Half a day’s delay will not make a difference.”

“I won’t be that late!”

…Damn it. You shouldn’t kill two to let five get away.

However, taking down five was hard.

But not impossible.

I needed to make them pay for attacking Ervan and the other Cherry Ents.

I reached the Golem whose joint I had broken.

And since it tried to get up, I crushed its wrists as well.

“I’ll be borrowing this.”

I said as I picked up one of its arms.

As it was made of stone, I could use it with ‘Rock Throw.’

“Catch!”

I threw it as hard as I could.

    The rest of the chapter:

The arm flew through the air and not only smashed into a Stone Golem’s face, but it kept spinning off into the sky afterward.

As for the Golem, it stumbled back and crashed into the other Golems. And they started to roll down the hill.

“Now that I think about it, there’s something I should tell you. What I learned at the dojo wasn’t martial arts. I learned how to win fights.”

After all, the dojo master liked to use dirty tactics when facing me.

Thinking back on it now, he probably really didn’t want me to beat him.

However, it was useful as training. You never knew when it would come in handy.

Well, there wasn’t much point in telling that to these guys.

Stone Golems had much higher defense ability compared to ogres. But that didn’t mean that they were stronger than us.

“Come at me in a group, and I’ll kick you all down!”

I started to dash down the hill.

There had been a time when I had trouble controlling my strength, as an ogre. But I was used to it now.

I ran down at full speed, and planted a drop kick–like I had once seen on tv–into the chest of a Golem.

There was a loud sound as all five of the Golems spun in the air and rolled down the slope.

Beka was waiting at the bottom with a big smile. She quickly took them apart.

Being smashed by me or butchered by Beka… I wondered which they preferred.

When we were done with the cleanup, I dug a hole in a place that got plenty of sun, just like he wanted. And then I buried the five Cherry Ents.

“I hope that’s good enough, old man.”

“Aye. And there must be water.”

“I know. I’ll bring it now.”

“If possible, I would like water every day until I take root.”

    “You’re quite demanding.”

“We cannot move. And we are old. We have a long life ahead of us as elders, and we need plenty of water.”

    “But you just evolved!”

    “Well, that is different. Hohoho.”

“…Fine. We’re still fighting a war, so I don’t know if I can come every day. But I’ll speak to the kobolds.”

    “I’m sorry to inconvenience you.”

“That’s fine. I just want you to be careful from now on. You really had me worried back there.”

    “Yes. I will be careful.”

“I don’t believe you for a second! I’m not relieved at all.”

Beka searched the town to make sure that there were no other enemies, and then we returned to our camp.

“Welcome back. Things are fine here.”

    Said Saifo.

His body was riddled with wounds. It must have been a fierce battle.

    “How is the enemy?”

“They lost their momentum once the Reapers took them from behind. And I guess we continued to fight until they retreated?”

“Painy. Do you have anything to add to that?”

“Indeed. It seems like they retreated in order to avoid a war of attrition.”

    “I see.”

So their goal had been to get us with a pincer attack. That was all.

Once they saw that their support was not appearing from behind us, and that instead they were being attacked from the rear by Reapers, they would know that they were at a disadvantage.

A war of attrition would be bad for them. And so they had to retreat.

“So, Golan. Are you going to go to that meeting thing now?”

    “Strategy meeting. Yes. Why?”

“Then you should take me with you.”

“I could. But you can’t come inside.”

He would have to wait outside, just like Rig.

“That’s fine. I just want to see what you’re doing.”

    “Hmm…”

Perhaps leaving him in charge here had helped the idiot brother learn something.

    “So, I can go?”

    “Sure, why not.”

“Whaat! If he can go, then I want to go too.”

“You’ll stay here with Rig. …Rig, I’ll be going with Saifo today.”

    “As you wish.”

    “That’s not fair, brother!”

“Just ask him to take you tomorrow.”

“Oh, right. You’re so smart, older brother.”

    “Right?”

Take her tomorrow? Do I have to?
