Chapter 955: Old

When the Nightmen realized that they couldn't force the Extractors to work against their will, they grew angry.

They hated that they couldn't get something with raw power.

They were so extremely powerful, but that wasn't any use!

In their dreams, they had imagined armies of enslaved and miserable Extractors producing loads of Zephyx for them.

Sadly, these dreams were not feasible.

The Extractors needed to be happy and relatively free to produce Zephyx.

This was bad news since that meant that the Nightmen had to share their resources with them.

After further negotiations, the Nightwatcher made a deal with the Chancelor.

The Nightmen would help the normal humans with many different tasks, but in exchange, they wanted a bigger share of the Zephyx.

The Chancelor agreed.

The Nightmen were furious when they heard that they had to work for the normal people.

We have to work with these weak, naïve, and spineless cowards?!

Yet, they had no other choice.

The Nightwatcher gave the order.

For the next ten years, the Nightmen worked with the normal people, and the underground city entered a period of abundance.

Progress was made everywhere.

And then…

The Nightwatcher wasn't reelected.

They hated working with the normal people.

Why should they?

These resources were theirs, and since they were the more powerful party, the resources of the other party were also theirs!

They should have everything!

For the next decades, things were not as great.

The Nightmen tried strong-arm tactics again and again, but they never got what they wanted.

Eventually, however, they managed to accept their reality.

While the Nightmen had no empathy, and while many of them were unstable psychopaths, they were not stupid.

Yes, they wanted everything for themselves, but it was better to own 50% of something than to own 100% of nothing.

After some time, they managed to elect a Nightwatcher who was actually reelected several times.

This Nightwatcher was also the first one to manage to reach the Eighth Realm.

The first requirement had been fulfilled.

Now, they had to work on the second.

The Nightwatcher was one of the best ones when it came to researching Techniques, and he immediately went into seclusion to produce the ten Internal Techniques.

During his seclusion, he elected a stand-in, who would lead the Nightmen for him.

Decades passed, and the Nightwatcher managed to create two Internal Techniques that fulfilled the criteria.

Only eight more to go.

If the Nightwatcher managed to get reelected one last time, he would become the permanent leader of the Nightmen, and the third requirement would be fulfilled.

Of course, when the elections happened, he wasn't reelected.

Instead, the stand-in he had chosen became the new Nightwatcher.

The new Nightwatcher knew that this would delay their freedom for a century, but it was worth it.

He wanted to be the leader of the Nightmen.

Naturally, the old leader refused to continue researching due to the betrayal.

Several things happened, and eventually, the old Nightwatcher became the new Nightwatcher again.

They needed these Internal Techniques, and he was the only one who could create them.

The research continued, and the Nightwatcher managed to produce another two.

And then…

He wasn't reelected.

Things repeated themselves, and the researcher became the Nightwatcher once again.

He produced two more Techniques and was not reelected yet again.

It was clear.

The Nightmen would never allow him to become their permanent leader.

Because of that, the old Nightwatcher refused to make more Techniques permanently.

New Nightwatchers were elected, and more of them reached the Eighth Realm.

Within two centuries, they managed to create the ten Internal Techniques.

Now, they only had to fulfill the third criterion.

That was the easiest.

They just had to choose a permanent leader.

'That will never happen,' Nick thought.

The third criterion seemed to be the easiest to fulfill, but it was actually the hardest.

The Nightmen were selfish, and they would not allow anyone else to have all of it.

Even if they managed to elect the perfect leader, they wouldn't be reelected nine times.

That was because the Nightmen couldn't let go.

The older Nightmen wanted this to end since they wanted to get out of the underground city, but the younger Nightmen still had a long time to live.

They could wait for another couple of centuries.

The younger Nightmen believed that they had a shot at becoming the Nightwatcher, and if the elections ended, that chance would vanish as well.

Because of that, they couldn't let the elections end.

Otherwise, they would never become the Nightwatcher.

However, after many years, the Nightmen found a solution to this issue.

They would simply vote for a very old person to become the Nightwatcher.

Then, they would reelect them nine times and make them the permanent leader.

Finally, the old person would die, and new elections would happen.

Sadly, they couldn't vote in a Nightman who was in the Seventh Realm since they could reach the Eighth Realm and live for thousands of years more.

They needed to vote for someone who was already in the Eighth Realm.

So, they chose the first Nightwatcher who reached the Eighth Realm.

Yet, it still took over 1,500 years for that person to become old enough for the plan to work.

Well, this just meant they had to wait.

Time passed.

Nick researched more and more Techniques.

He had already found a way to increase the advancement to the Seventh Realm.

The Nightmen had found their own way to the Sixth Realm.

They simply made a second Energy Bone.

One more century passed.

By now, Nick was over 2,400 years old.

He was almost at the limit of how long Shields could survive.

As Nick looked at the world, he took note of one thing.

The Champion of Light.

He had become incredibly old.

The current Champion of Light looked very similar to the old Champion of Light.

He mostly sat on his throne and let Aegis run on its own.

He had nothing more to do.

'He has less than a century left,' Nick realized.

That was when Nick decided to check in with the aliens again.

And as expected, the aliens gave him an answer.

"This cycle will end in 60 years."

    Chap 956 Everyone

    That was it.

    It was over.

    The era would end.

Nick checked in with the Sun every fifty years or so, which was why he had missed the initial announcement.

'As expected,' Nick thought as he took a deep breath. 'The Champion is too old, and allowing a new Champion to rise probably costs too much Zephyx.'

'They have to make the new Champion into a Savior, and that has to be expensive.'

'They don't want to make a new Champion just so they could harvest Zephyx for a couple more centuries.'

'The era will end before the Champion dies or shortly after.'

The era had gone on for longer than Nick had predicted.

He had anticipated that it would end a thousand years earlier, but that was not the case.

'The aliens really want to squeeze as much Zephyx out of Earth as possible.'

Nick didn't know it, but the reason why the era had gone on for so long was the Representatives of the Mother.

    They needed more Zephyx.

The Strategists wanted to end the era earlier to make sure that there were no hidden threats like back then, with the Enlightened Ones.

'It is time to prepare things,' Nick thought.

He looked at the underground city.

'I made this city in hopes that it could fight against the aliens.'

'But that was never going to happen.'

'Now, I have to make sure that the city vanishes.'

Naturally, when the era reset, it was possible that the aliens would find this city.

Nick didn't know all the functions of the Sun, but during an era reset, the Sun might find the city.

As Nick looked at the city, he felt pressure deep inside.

He didn't want to do it, but he had to.

    For humanity.

All of this was for humanity.

For several hours, Nick just looked at the city.

Then, he took another deep breath.

A moment later, his influence washed over the city.

The people didn't notice anything and continued living as normal.

Slowly, one person after the other started to stop in the street.

They had forgotten what they wanted to do.

They started to look around in confusion.

    These surroundings were unfamiliar.

    Wait, where were they?

    What?

Slowly, the confusion vanished as they just looked mindlessly into space.

Nick had erased all the memories of their lives.

    Only their instincts remained.

Then, Nick deleted those as well.

All of the people in the underground city collapsed.

    They were all brain-dead.

The few young mortals couldn't breathe anymore and silently asphyxiated.

As for the older ones, they could still survive since their Zephosis worked automatically.

The underground city had fallen deathly silent.

Nick had killed everyone in the underground city.

    It felt horrible.

The underground city was essentially his baby.

This was the world he had created.

And now, he had destroyed it.

'For humanity,' Nick thought as he closed his eyes.

The next moment, Nick used his telekinesis to crush all corpses into powder.

    It was over.

    Everyone was dead.

Nick took a long while to recover.

Eventually, he walked to the Archive and deleted everything in it.

Then, he accessed every single machine in the underground city and wiped all the functions from them.

He carefully destroyed every machine after that.

When all the information was deleted, Nick built a storage for the Zephyx, which the city contained, and buried it deep underground.

Finally, Nick crushed the entire city into a tiny ball with his telekinesis.

He stopped in front of the tiny ball and summoned a Star Energy generator.

After putting a drop of Star Energy on the ball, it turned into a burst of white dust.

Nick funneled the Star Energy into a Pure Energy generator to create Pure Energy.

The Pure Energy was released into the surroundings, turning the rocks incredibly hard.

Finally, Nick crushed all of the rocks into dust and scattered the dust across the world.

All of this had been necessary since he didn't know what would happen when the era reset.

What if the Sun used some kind of ability to siphon Zephyx out of materials?

In that case, it would find the ball.

However, if Nick just turned the ball into Star Energy, it might change the equilibrium of Prephyx in the world.

Because of that, he had simply created Pure Energy and put it into random stones.

This was the only way it couldn't be sensed.

As Nick looked at the empty space in front of him, his heart shook.

He expected to see the underground city that he had built, but it was no longer there.

When he dealt with the underground city, he was almost mechanical.

    He wasn't thinking.

    He just did it.

'It's hard to believe that it's gone.'

Nick remembered Ghosty and the first researchers.

Back then, they had simply been in a small underground lab.

Eventually, Nick had created an entire city, which had taken him almost two entire decades back then.

Nick remembered Aria and how she had led the city before Samar took over as the Chancelor.

Ghosty, Aria, Samar, Giovanni, the researchers…

They had all worked together to free humanity.

    This had been their home.

    Their base.

    Their hope.

    And now, it was gone.

The next moment, Nick looked at the distant Champion in his office.

    'He is the last one.'

'The last human who knows me.'

'All the other ones are just faintly familiar with the concept of the Trickster.'

'He's the last one I actually talked to regularly.'

The Left Arm, the Right Arm, the Technician, the Knife, the Wall, the Politician, the old Champion, the Inferno, the Ice Storm, the new Right Arm, Aria, Samar, Ghosty, the Tinkerer, Wyntor, Julian, Trevor, Jenny, Hera, Marion, Markus Julius, Simon Francium, William, Pavelka, Mundus, Ariel, Zarren, Mendez, Mindy, Cindy, Jornis, Vanessa, Libran, Vernon, Manela, Reynold, Ardum, Carl, Irwin, Clayton, Petra, Jason, Cynthia, Mendor, Steve, Shirley…

Nick had been in contact with all of them several times.

Not everyone had been a friend, but they were people Nick had known and talked to.

    All of them.

    Every single one of them.

    Was dead.

    Nick looked at the Champion.

    The last one.

He remembered working with the Champion to deal with Greed, the Envious Researcher, Pride, Wrath, Gluttony, Sloth, and Lust.

They had worked together very closely.

    But soon…

    Even the Champion would vanish.

Chap 957 The End is Near

In the next decades, Nick focused on his own abilities.

During these years, Nick paid attention to the Champion.

He was growing older by the day.

Surprisingly, even though the Champion was a Savior, his longevity had not increased.

He still could only live to 2,500 years of age.

His Zephyx regeneration could barely keep up with his passive Zephyx usage.

    The Champion was weak.

Just staying conscious was work for him, and his mind didn't work as well anymore.

The Saviors talked to him more and more since they knew that he would soon leave them.

Nick hadn't seen a lot of the old Champion's life, but he had seen the new Champion's entire life.

In the beginning, the new Champion had been arrogant, incompetent, and insecure.

Living up to the old Champion's legacy seemed almost impossible.

But as Nick looked at the current Champion.

'I don't know about the old Champion, but I know that you have more than lived up to his legacy.'

The Champion had accomplished so much in his life.

He had led Aegis against the Seven Corruptors, the Trio of Destruction, Death, the Envious Researcher, the Maw, and Nurse Alice.

Humanity hadn't feared the Specters for a thousand years.

At this moment, humanity had over ten Saviors, and three of them were even Early Saviors.

If all of them banded together, there was even a chance that they could damage or destroy the Sun.

Yet, until the bitter end, the Champion claimed that the Sun was their ally.

This was why Nick had thought the aliens would end the era early.

Aegis already had the power to damage the Sun.

The only thing that kept them from trying was the Champion.

One day, the Champion asked for quiet and peace in his office.

He just weakly lay on his throne, his eyes sunken.

He looked at the world with his perception.

    The people were happy.

The old fairy tale of the Champion of Light had essentially come true for them.

Thousands of years ago, the people believed in the Champion of Light.

He would free them of the Specters eventually.

And he had done just that.

That was when the Champion noticed something.

Over the middle of the ocean, someone familiar was hovering in the air.

    It was Julian Winter.

The Champion looked at Nick for a bit, and Nick just looked back.

Eventually, the Champion just smiled weakly.

He leaned back in his throne and closed his eyes.

    His Zephyx Synchronizer stopped working.

    His consciousness faded.

Nick watched as the Champion's life ended.

Nick had respected many people in his life, but he had never respected anyone as much as the current Champion.

He had done an excellent job.

He truly lived up to his name.

The next moment, Nick vanished again.

A grand funeral was held the next day.

    The world wept.

At the height of the funeral, the Sun suddenly brightened.

The people believed that this was a sign of respect from the Sun.

But then, the eyes of the Saviors, the Shields, and the Protectors opened in horror.

New knowledge appeared in their minds.

Knowledge about an imperceivable being that could cause endless suffering.

It grew stronger the less people knew about it.

    And then, the wailing began.

All the powerful Extractors screamed in terror and pain as the Null activated its ability.

Panic and terror spread across the world, and it wouldn't stop anytime soon.

The screaming continued for days, and the Heroes tried their best to stop whatever was happening, but they were powerless.

The first Protector died a week later.

The last Protector died three months later.

The first Shield died a year later.

The last Shield died ten years later.

The first Savior died 30 years later.

The last Savior died 50 years later.

Within 50 years, all powerful Extractors died, and the world entered an era of panic and unrest.

Zephyx production for the aliens shot through the roof.

The era reset had already begun, and this was the first step.

"Gather in this place," the Sun spoke.

Nick moved towards the indicated place, which was over the Atlantic Ocean.

As Nick arrived, he saw five more Specters.

Surprisingly, there was still a wild Adversary.

    The other four were Fallen.

Since all of them had arrived here, it meant that the Sun had called all of them over.

"Free Nurse Alice, the Shark Mother, the Salt Trident, the Eternal Hunger, and the False Hope," the Sun told Nick.

Nick nodded and entered Aegis' headquarters.

    No human could stop him.

First, Nick opened the Containment Unit of Nurse Alice, killing any human who reacted to the alarm.

When the door opened, Nurse Alice looked at Nick.

"The era is about to end," Nick said as he transmitted the coordinates of the gathering place to her.

Nurse Alice nodded and left Aegis' headquarters.

Next, Nick opened the Containment Unit of the Shark Mother, which immediately flew to the meeting place.

Nick and the Salt Trident talked for a bit, and Nick carried it with him.

The Salt Trident couldn't move on its own.

So, he simply used his Telekinesis to carry it.

Nick had to force the False Hope and the Eternal Hunger into compliance since neither of them had any intelligence.

Eventually, Nick flew back to the meeting place with the three Specters he carried with him.

Nurse Alice and the Shark Mother were already there.

All in all, there were eleven Specters in this place.

"Do we need anyone else?" Nick asked the Sun.

"No, this is everyone," the Sun said.

The eleven Specters waited patiently as a beam of light came down from the Sun, surrounding them.

These eleven Specters would be the only ones that would survive the era.

Everyone outside this place would die, aside from the Null and the Nightmare.

Including those two and the Sun, there were five Eternals, five Adversaries, and four Fallen.

The four Fallen would represent humanity's biggest direct enemy in the next era.

They would cause the most suffering and chaos.

The False Hope and the Eternal Hunger would eradicate all life outside the cities.

The Salt Trident and the Shark Mother would eradicate all life within the oceans and keep humanity separated.

The new Adversary would be the leader of the four Fallen.

Nurse Alice would return to her old job of killing anyone who spoke the Sentence.

Nick would do the job of the Envious Researcher and the Maw.

    The team had been assembled.

The next moment, the Sun brightened even more.

It was time to end the era.

=> Main Ability upgraded so that as long as no-one knows of his Main Ability, the number of times his power increases goes up from 5 to an unspecified number.
=> Ability to read the minds of anyone as long as they were in a zone of darkness.
=>Ability to make Nick impossible to be sensed unless someone was particularly sensitive to Zephyx, also making him intangible.
=> Ability to rejuvenate Zephyx by absorption of light.
=> Ability to hide Nick's Zephyx.
    => Even more intelligence.
=> Ability to sense everything in a 10,000km radius around himself.
=> Ability to create portals without needing his Main Ability to be active.
=> Ability to make a completely human body.
    Sheild level ability

    g) New ability (secondary)=> Allows Nick to understand everything about a being's body, down to the cellular details, with a single look.
=>Main Ability upgraded so that Nick could 'see' or sense anyone so much as knew of Nick's existence, no matter the location.
=>Main Ability upgraded so that Nick instantly knows what another being or thing knew about him.
=> Nightmare's Ability upgraded so now Nick can perceive every thing within darkness and cause darkness to spread over areas without it, essentially stripping the area of light energy from the very root/source.
=> Nightmare's Ability upgraded so Nick has a similar Domain of Nightmare around him, just like the Nightmare, allowing him to cause similar effects to beings inside darkness inside of his perception.
=> Shapeshifting Ability upgraded so now Nick can transform into anything imaginable, so long as he stores his Zephyx somewhere when converting into things made of stuff other than Zephyx.
=>Shapeshifting Ability upgraded so now Nick can create a living being up right from it's cells.
=> The Fog's Ability upgraded so now when Nick goes into his Force Specter state, he becomes essentially like the Null, having a body that is there but not, it's like a blind spot to powerful entities but can't even be sensed by others.
=>The Fog's Ability upgraded so now Nick can spread his body indefinitely in exchange for Zephyx and can kill any being upto his power level instantly as long as they're within the the area he is spread over.
=>Memories Ability upgraded so now he can create memories as well and read a person's memories as long as they're upto his power level.
=> Memories Ability upgraded so now he can literally read what a person's abilities are.
=>Blinding Light's Ability upgraded so now Nick can create whatever he wants to out of light.
=> The Maw's Ability upgraded so now Nick can create portals for minimal amounts of Zephyx in the area under his perception.
=> The Maw's Ability upgraded so now Nick's perception encompasses the whole Earth and goes beyond.
    Saviour level ability

    Nick's abilities (self-made) -
    a) Communication ability => Allows him to deliver sound directly to a target's ears, done by converting Soundwaves into Zephyx and then back again when the Zephyx reaches the target's ears.
Created when Nick was a Specialist/Fanatic to communicate in secret.
    b) Mind Reading ability=> Allows Nick to "read" the minds of those weaker than himself.
    (i) Originally=> Nick could read the minds of those upto three levels weaker than him at the very most.
(ii) Evolution 1=> Nick had it upgraded when he went from being a Hero/Demon to Protector/Fallen, allowing him to read the minds of those who are a level below him.
(iii) Evolution 2=> Ability to read the minds of someone who is 0.75 levels below him.
(iii) Evolution 3=> Ability to read the minds of anyone at or below his level.
Created when Nick was a Hero/Demon, evolved when he became a Protector/Fallen
    c) Information Relay ability=> This ability allows Nick to manipulate the light in front of an object, this is done using a similar method as the sound ability but the Zephyx is used to manipulate the light or it's used send light signals, both work (in my understanding). It was used in combination with Greater Relay glasses in order to transmit information of the Envious Researcher. I gave it the name because of what it was used for and how it was used.
Created when Nick was a Demon, to kill the Envious Researcher.
    d) Suffering Detection ability=> Allows Nick to detect suffering/potential.
Created when Nick was a Protector/Fallen to sniff out Greed.
    e) Zephyx Vision ability=> Allows Nick to see how Zephyx moves through a person or a being, allowing him to 'read' their Manipulation Lines and figure out the other party's abilities.
Created when Nick was a Shield/Adversary.

I hope so. But my worry is what if they dont due to the risk. They cant really explain their behavior to the sun. Especially because the champion isnt hostile towards Nick
