Chapter 115: Gears and Shadows |
“This is... the annihilation countdown.” Anna’s voice trembled, her shaking fingertip nearly piercing the holographic projection floating in midair. The countdown interface, composed of eerie blue particles, was ticking down at a speed visible to the naked eye. Each change in the numbers sounded like the footsteps of death drawing closer. “The archives of the Sector Seven runaway incident from twenty years ago mentioned that once the gears start rotating backward, the final destruction protocol is triggered.” She pulled open her collar, revealing the intricate mechanical device at her collarbone. The warning lights on the metallic surface flashed wildly, and the piercing buzzing sound stood out starkly in the silent space. “My neural interface has been alarming non-stop—something is breaching the dimensional barrier.”
Jonas stared at the coordinates on the badge in his hand. The faint blue light dot suddenly transformed into a data stream like a living creature, racing into his retina at incredible speed. Instantly, his tactical goggles activated automatically, projecting an unfamiliar navigation interface before his eyes. A flashing arrow steadfastly pointed toward the “Gear Core” deep underground. His pupils contracted slightly; the knuckles gripping his weapon whitened from the force. “They deliberately let me live.” His cold words carried a hint of self-mockery. “That shadow, and this badge, are both a trap and a key.”
The two of them struggled through the narrow, cramped ventilation ducts, infiltrating underground. The metal pipes groaned under their weight as they pressed forward, each step accompanied by teeth-grinding friction noises. The deeper they went, the colder the surroundings became. The gear mechanisms embedded in the walls grew denser, and the dark red rust stains looked like congealed blood, appearing especially eerie under the dim emergency lights. Jonas’s nerves were taut; his pulse rifle remained on high alert. His tactical goggles continuously scanned the environment, not missing a single anomaly.
Suddenly, Anna grabbed Jonas’s arm with such force it almost pierced his skin. In the darkness, a bone-chilling sound of gears meshing echoed. It was like countless teeth gnawing at each other or the death knell from hell itself. Immediately, dozens of mechanical spiders emitting red light crawled out from the pipe gaps. Their compound eyes flashed with icy murderous intent, and their eight mechanical legs scraped the metal pipes with a sound that made one’s scalp tingle. These mechanical spiders were made entirely of black alloy, with joints glowing an eerie purple light. Green corrosive liquid dripped from the spray ports on their abdomens, eating holes in the ground that emitted white smoke.
The battle erupted instantly. Jonas reacted with lightning speed, rolling to evade the corrosive liquid sprayed by the spiders. The green liquid landed where he had just been, instantly corroding the metal floor into a deep pit, releasing pungent smoke. He quickly raised his rifle; the pulse rifle’s muzzle emitted a bright blue light, accurately blasting the mechanical body in front of him. The explosion’s shockwave knocked several spiders to the ground, but more swarmed in like a tide.
Anna threw out an electromagnetic cable, entangling a large group of spiders. Her fingertips and neural interface burst with dazzling blue light. Data streams poured down like waterfalls, forcibly invading the mechanical spiders’ control system. Thanks to her efforts, some spiders slowed significantly, even turning on each other. However, this resistance was only temporary. More spiders flooded in from all directions, the air thick with the acrid smell of ozone and machine oil. The battle stalled in a deadly stalemate.
Jonas fired while searching for an escape route. He noticed the spiders seemed controlled by a central system. Destroying the core controller might end this nightmare. He shouted, “Anna! These spiders have a central brain! We have to find the core that controls them!”
Anna nodded. Blue data streams flickered before her eyes as she focused intently on searching for system vulnerabilities. “I’m hacking their network, but their firewall is incredibly strong!” Sweat beaded on her forehead, her face pale from overexertion.
At that moment, a massive mechanical spider hung upside down from the ceiling and launched a surprise attack on Jonas. Hearing movement above, Jonas instinctively leaned back; the sharp claw grazed his nose, leaving two deep scratches on the wall. He quickly raised his rifle and fired several shots at the spider’s abdomen. However, the giant spider’s shell was exceptionally tough, leaving only shallow dents from the bullets.
Jonas understood instantly. He adjusted his aim and fired a series of pulse beams accurately at the vent. The giant spider let out a piercing scream as a large hole exploded open on its abdomen, spewing green liquid. However, its death seemed to trigger a self-destruct sequence. The entire body began flashing red warning lights.
“No good! Get away!” Jonas shouted, dragging Anna as they desperately retreated. A massive explosion erupted, the shockwave flinging them against the pipe walls. They both felt dizzy and disoriented, ears buzzing.
When they regained their senses, the number of mechanical spiders had significantly decreased, but the fight was far from over. Worse, the deeper underground they went, a strange energy fluctuation permeated the air, causing their electronic devices to malfunction. Jonas’s tactical goggles occasionally flickered with static, and the pulse rifle’s recharge speed slowed. Anna’s neural interface emitted sharp alarms; the data streams became chaotic.
“We have to speed up,” Jonas struggled to stand, his body bruised but eyes resolute. “The countdown is still running. I don’t know how much time we have left.”
Anna wiped blood from the corner of her mouth and nodded. “I sense the central brain nearby. The spiders’ attack frequency clearly protects a certain area.” She concentrated and tried to hack the enemy’s system again, finally finding a breakthrough. “Got it! Follow me!”
The two pressed onward through narrow corridors, constantly attacked by mechanical spiders. These enemies seemed crazier, their assaults more reckless. Jonas and Anna cooperated, relying on their rich combat experience and unyielding will to break through the enemy lines with great difficulty.
Finally, they reached a huge circular chamber. In the center stood a massive gear mechanism, countless wires and pipes connected to it, emitting a low rumble. The gear’s surface was carved with mysterious runes, radiating an eerie purple glow. Above the gear floated a crystal-like sphere—that was the mechanical spiders’ central brain.
“There it is!” Anna pointed at the crystal sphere. Just as they prepared to attack, the entire room suddenly shook violently. The gears on the walls began rotating backward, accelerating rapidly. The whole space was engulfed in a suffocating atmosphere. More terrifyingly, from the gaps in the gears slowly emerged a shadow, exuding a chilling aura, like a demon crawling out of the Abyss.
Jonas gripped his weapon tightly. Despite the fear inside, his gaze remained firm. “Looks like this is the ultimate trap they set. But no matter what, we have to stop the annihilation countdown!” Anna nodded. Her neural interface lit up blue again; data streams swirled around her, forming a defensive barrier.
The shadow spoke slowly, its voice low and hoarse, as if from another dimension. “Insignificant humans, do you think you can change fate? The gears’ rotation has long been destined. Annihilation is an inevitable outcome.”
Jonas sneered. “We may be insignificant, but we will never just lie down and die. Today, we will not only destroy your central brain, but also stop this disaster!” With that, he launched the attack first, the pulse rifle’s beams shooting toward the shadow. However, the beams were swallowed without a trace the moment they touched it.
Seeing this, Anna immediately injected data streams into the gear mechanism, attempting to disrupt the central brain’s operation. The shadow seemed to sense her intent, stretching out a huge arm to grab at Anna. Jonas didn’t hesitate to shield her with his body. The immense force slammed him against the wall, and a mouthful of blood sprayed out.
“Jonas!” Anna shouted, panic flashing in her eyes. But she quickly calmed down, knowing this was no time for sorrow. She concentrated all her energy into the neural interface. The data streams became a sharp sword, plunging directly into the crystal sphere.
The crystal sphere trembled violently, emitting a shrill alarm. The shadow roared angrily, abandoning the attack on Jonas and lunging at Anna instead. At this critical moment, Jonas struggled to stand, raising the pulse rifle and firing at the shadow’s back. The sudden attack disrupted the shadow’s rhythm, causing its assault to falter.
Anna seized the chance, maximizing the data stream’s power. A deafening explosion sounded as the crystal sphere shattered. A powerful energy wave radiated outward. The shadow let out a mournful scream, its body turning transparent and gradually dissipating into the air.
However, the crisis was not fully over. The gear mechanism went out of control due to the central brain’s destruction. The annihilation countdown accelerated. Jonas and Anna stared at the frenzied gears, knowing they had to find a way to shut down the destruction program, or everything would be wiped out.
“The archives say that only by restoring the gears’ normal rotation can the program be shut down,” Anna shouted. “But how do we do that?”
Jonas scanned around and suddenly noticed a control panel on the gear mechanism. It was covered with complex buttons and displays, with a mysterious string of code on the central screen. “Maybe the answer is there!” he said, pointing.
They struggled to approach the panel. Jonas tried to decipher the code on the screen, while Anna connected her neural interface to the panel, attempting to find a way to disable the program. Time passed second by second. The countdown numbers grew smaller, each tick pounding on their hearts.
Just as the countdown was about to reach zero, Anna suddenly shouted, “Got it! Jonas, enter this code quickly!” Jonas hurriedly typed the code on the control panel, anxiously awaiting the result.
The tremors in the gear core gradually subsided. Jonas struggled to crawl up from the debris-strewn floor, his tactical goggles still ringing with alarms. Anna leaned against the mottled metal wall. The blue light of her neural interface had dimmed to scattered spots. She stared at the flickering data stream residuals in her palm, her pupils suddenly contracting sharply. “No, although the destruction program stopped, the dimensional barrier’s fluctuations…” Before she could finish, the gear mechanism above oozed a thick, tar-like black substance, which condensed in the air into a twisted human face.
“You think rewriting the code can change the outcome?” The shadow’s voice was mixed with the harsh sound of metal scraping. “The moment the gears rotate backward, the Abyss’s rift becomes irreparable.” The black substance split like a living creature into countless streams, seeping into every crack in the walls. Jonas raised his pulse rifle warily, but the target in his scope twisted and warped continuously, making locking on impossible.
Anna suddenly pulled open her collar, revealing complex patterns on the mechanical device’s surface. “My neural interface is analyzing these energy fluctuations. They... they come from the Sector Seven incident twenty years ago!” Her voice trembled with shock. “The experimental subjects destroyed back then never truly died but were trapped in an alternate dimension.” As she spoke, ghostly green rune arrays appeared on the ground, and countless dark red light points rose from underground, forming a broken humanoid silhouette in the air.
Jonas’s communicator suddenly burst with harsh static. A familiar yet strange voice came through. “Jonas, remember that old wound on your chest? That heart-piercing injury wasn’t caused by an ordinary bullet.” The shadow emitted a sharp laugh as the metal floor cracked under the sound. “You think you’re a survivor? You’re just the vessel we chose.”
Anna’s fingertips suddenly emitted blue light. The data stream wrapped like chains around a nearby residual shadow. “Jonas, the brainwave frequency of these residual shadows... exactly matches the chip implanted in you after the Sector Seven incident!” Jonas’s temples throbbed violently as buried fragments of memory flooded his mind—the burning lab, twisted mechanical limbs, and the shadow implanting the chip in the back of his neck.
The rune array on the ground suddenly surged, engulfing both in dazzling light. When the light faded, Jonas found himself inside a ring-shaped space made of gears. Countless mirrors floated in the air, each reflecting different scenes: his younger self crying in an orphanage, being betrayed by comrades during missions, and Anna collapsing from a bullet wound while protecting him on one occasion. “These are your deepest fears,” the shadow’s voice echoed in the space, “and also the key to unlocking the dimensional barrier.”
Anna’s voice came from another direction, tinged with electrical noise. “Don’t be fooled by illusions! These mirrors absorb your emotional energy!” Jonas clenched his fists, his nails digging deep into his palms. The pain briefly cleared his mind. “Tell me, what exactly do you want?” The shadow emitted a deafening roar. “We want to return to the real world, and you are the key to opening the door.”
The gear space began spinning violently. Countless residual shadows transformed into spikes, stabbing toward Jonas. At the last critical moment, Anna’s electromagnetic cable pierced through the mirrors, pulling Jonas toward her. “Remember the first time we fought side by side?” Her neural interface glowed blue again, weaving data streams into a protective net in the air. “You said back then, no matter how hard it gets, there’s always a way out.”
Jonas’s gaze fell on the center of the expanding rune array on the ground, where there was a recess matching the shape of his badge. He suddenly pulled open his collar, revealing a mechanical device similar to Anna’s at his collarbone. “The accident twenty years ago was no accident. They deliberately modified me into a vessel.” He embedded the badge into the recess. The entire space was instantly bathed in golden light. “But they forgot, even a vessel can choose what it carries.”
As the gear mechanism emitted deafening rumbles, the rune array began rotating backward. The shadow let out a resentful roar, and countless residual shadows dissipated in the light. Jonas and Anna clasped each other’s hands in the intense glow. They knew this war over time and memory was only just beginning. Deep within the gear core, a more dangerous rift silently expanded in the darkness...
