Chapter 11: At the End of Science Lies Theology?

Chen Chen did not know when he had fallen asleep. He only knew that he had been looking up all sorts of information on the internet to better combat challenges that might arise in the future.

The development of the internet had created a scenario of "information explosion". People now could easily acquire boundless knowledge on the internet.

Even so, few could convert this knowledge into actual wealth.

This was not a question of perseverance but the limitations of one's logical thinking and level of judgment.

The information on the internet was as vast as an ocean. This ocean of data was full of various rubbish and fake news. Anyone would need astonishing acumen to distinguish the good from the bad.

However, when a person with extraordinary judgment was bestowed with this knowledge, the internet ceased to become an obstacle.

On the contrary, they would be able to fully utilize the advantages of the internet.

It was in such a state that Chen Chen had browsed through various academic websites and forums.

While doing so, he had even picked up some hacking skills on his own, so that he could circumvent the restrictions and filters placed upon forum guests.

Chen Chen did not know what time he had fallen asleep.

It seemed to be after two in the morning. When the effects of the drug wore off, exhaustion engulfed him like a tide.

Chen Chen did not even have time to turn off the computer before he lay back and conked out.

Nonetheless, Chen Chen's sleep was not a restful one. The residual effects of the drug had excited his brain to an unusual degree and he suffered nightmares throughout the night.

"Oh no, we woke up late. It's Old Wang's class this morning!"

Through the fog of sleep, Wang Wei's anxious voice rang out by his bed. Chen Chen opened his eyes reflexively to find that it was early morning the next day.

Chen Chen sat up but was overcome by a wave of dizziness and a splitting headache.

He could not tell where the source of discomfort was. It was like a severe cold. He felt weak all over and his stomach was churning.

Before he could even speak, Chen Chen's expression shifted. He quickly covered his mouth, hopped off his bed, and rushed to the toilet.

"Barf!"

Retching noises echoed from the toilet. Wang Wei, Li Bo, and Zhou Jie exchanged a look.

"We didn't notice anything yesterday. Why is Lil Chen's reaction worse than Nostril's?"

Wang Wei stared at Zhou Jie who was hungover and asked, mystified.

"Is Lil Chen heartbroken too?" Zhou Jie scratched his disheveled head in a dispirited manner.

"I'll say! No wonder he's so poor he can only afford buns."

Li Bo shook his head, sighing. "He must've spent it all on his goddess. I've said before, lapdogs don't get a happy ending."

Fortunately, Chen Chen was busy puking and did not hear what they had said. Otherwise, he would have blown his top.

After a bout of vomiting, his stomach felt somewhat better.

Chen Chen rose and turned on the tap, splashing his face with no regard for its temperature.

The bone-cutting iciness hit him and he shuddered once. His wilting spirits immediately recovered.

"Thud thud thud."

Outside, Wang Wei knocked on the door. "Lil Chen, can you walk? Do you want to call in sick?"

Chen Chen opened the door, his face still dripping, and said weakly, "I'm fine. I might have the flu."

"So, you took cephalosporins, huh?" Zhou Jie asked.

"…"

'So he still can't get over that comment?'

Chen Chen could not be bothered to chit chat. After washing up, he went out of the toilet and put on his socks and shoes.

Wang Wei urged him on like a nagging mother. After all four of them hurriedly got ready, they went down together and dashed toward the canteen.

"Lil Chen, don't starve yourself if you're broke. I still have money left over this month and can lend you some."

At the canteen, Wang Wei recalled that Chen Chen had been eating buns yesterday. He patted Chen Chen's shoulder as he spoke.

"I still have enough for now. If I run out, I'll tell you."

Chen Chen waved his hand. He swiped his card, buying a cup of soy milk and two buns, which he ate as he walked toward the teaching block.

After downing a cup of hot soy milk, Chen Chen could feel himself coming alive. He exhaled loudly, creating a cloud of mist.

Winter solstice was coming…

Four of them tiptoed into the classroom. At the moment, the front seats had been taken. They could only look for seats in the back row.

"Alright, let's start the class."

Professor Wang Xi saw that the class was nearly full and began his lecture.

"Before we begin, let's talk about the relationship between theology and science."

Professor Wang Xi was different from the other professors. He seldom lectured according to the textbook. It was more likely for him to explore external topics to arouse the students' interest.

For instance, speculating about the origin of life or investigating immortality, and so on.

Currently, the old professor was chuckling as he paced. "First of all, who has heard of the saying, 'At the end of science lies theology'?"

Everyone below the platform was taken aback as they glanced around dubiously. Finally, almost all of them raised their hands hesitantly.

"Well, that's good. This means that everyone is rather concerned with science.

"In that case, let's examine this sentence, 'At the end of science lies theology', who said this, and what its arguments are."

Professor Wang Xi's expression turned solemn as he embarked on this topic.

"First of all, let me say that this line seems rather reasonable at first glance. On the internet, for example, people would often bring up how many scientists had studied theology in their last years.

"The quintessential figures are Newton, 'the father of early modern physics', and Einstein, 'the father of modern physics'.

"As the originator of Newtonian mechanics, Newton could be said to have spurred on the world's scientific progress by himself. As for Einstein, he's known as the greatest scientist of the twentieth century. Even so, why would these two titans of science end up studying theology?"

Professor Wang Xi put on an enigmatic expression and lowered his voice. "Did they discover some other secret that lies behind the science?"

Most people looked at each other in puzzlement after hearing this, unsure of what Professor Wang Xi was driving at.

"In the end, I stayed up all night researching, trying to find the answer to this question."

Professor Wang Xi made a face of mock relief and continued speaking.

"Everyone knows that Newton was born in 1643 AD. In that era, the whole of western society was governed by theocracy. After Newton was born, he received a theological education, which means that from the moment of his birth, he became a Catholic.

"That wasn't all. If you looked through Newton's life, you'll find that he spent most of his time searching for the code God used to create the universe. In his later years, he intensified his research into theology, trying to prove the existence of God.

"Out of Newton's whole life, 80% of his works were theological, numbering over 1.4 million.

"All this cannot be separated from the time and place he was in. In an age where religious influence pervaded the nation and unbelievers were persecuted, it's perhaps understandable that a physicist would be influenced by the idea of God."

There were soft titters around the room.

"Herein lies the crux of the matter. It wasn't that Newton only delved into theology late in his life. Rather, he had always been a theologian first, a scientist second."

Now I remember why I didn't comment on this chapter, because the comment section would be an absolute cluster-f*ck of differing views and opinions, some arguably more racist and derogatory than others.

I'm an atheist. To say that at the end of science lies theology is interesting, but also a lie. I believe at the end of theology lies science, a more complex way to understand the world, providing answers that are rooted in the world we live in, rather than ethereal or abstract concepts.

Most scientists were theologians to begin with, but a lot aren't anymore. Simply put, the world is less religious than before. That isn't to say that people shouldn't believe what they want to believe, and they definitely shouldn't be demonised for it. There's certainly a lot still to explain, but my personal beliefs lie in the world of science. I'm friends with people of many different religions and their view of the world always interests me. We can learn a lot from others, just takes a little respect.

Humans have created thousands of religious throughout history. Humans have also created thousands or more cryptids and other superstitious beliefs throughout history. If that proves one thing it's that humans are exceptionally consistent at making shit up.

Is one of those religions true? Who knows. But it would be very strange if one got it right while following the exact same formula as all the others who get it wrong. And it's not as if they could all be right, since far too many of them are mutually exclusive. It also doesn't seem likely that any of the currently most prominent religions was the progenitor for all the others, considering that the first religions worshiped physical things like mountains and the sun, later religions worshiped entire pantheons of cryptids, followed by entire pantheons of human-like gods, and only the later religions decided to have one human-like god.

The history of religion seems to paint a compelling picture, and one that's not in its favor.

I prefer to believe in a God and if he does exist I feel like he'd be pretty chill instead of the all powerful omnipresent being we think he is. Who says he has to be like that maybe he's just a creator nothing else. Even if he doesn't exist I wouldn't want that if he doesn't exist it means we're just a bunch of matter taking up barely a spec in this huge universe.

We have no purpose for living, there is no good or bad, someone could kill 100 babies and would receive no punishment after death, everything we do does not matter because we're just matter floating around in space. Our chances of being born were 1 in a billion yet this is all we have to show for it? Some people die a day after they were born what's the point in that? All I'm trying to say is I'd rather believe I was born for a purpose rather believing the human race could fade out of existence in the next few million years and no one would give a shit.

I assume from Bible, God created man in his own image and likeness.
It means that anything man capable, capable the God as well.
Pride, coldness and powerful vibes are common archetype of human's behavior when they have power.
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely"
If so, the omnipotent power tends to corrupt omnipotently.

No offense but I don't believe in any gods or religion. As a child I been fascinated by science it's theory and practicality. Everything has a reason behind it and science can explain it via experiments and theories. And I been exposed to science shows more than cartoon and religion stuff since I was a kid so I never belived in god.
The god is a self believe thing If you believe then he is there for you and if you don't it's not unless there is solid proof supporting the existence of god until now there is not.

I don't know about you guys, but i wholeheartedly believe that this universe and everything to exist is created by Allah(SWT).

The thing is if you follow the idea of Heaven and Hell, if a God truely exists, an atheist gonna be cursing his past-self after dying right? While if you believe in a God you will be happy or if a god doesn't exists it's still a win-win for you. So why not.

This is why atheism never made sense to me. How can something be created by itself? That's impossible. There must be a creator.

Good agruement, but the idea of religion and how it has appeared over history is flimsy. Atheist are simply people who can't understand or believe in the idea of a god, atheism is also tied to science as for the more we discover the less we believe in a higher being.

This is much like you who is the opposite who thinks much is impossible without a gods intervention.
Religion in history was made to explain the unexplainable, and there is still much to discover.

Does a god exist? Possibly, I don't honestly know.

Honestly a very good judgment by you fellow daoist.
        Let me share a story,

***An atheist asked Sheikh Ahmed Deedat(muslim scholar): "How would you feel if you die and find out that the Hereafter(life after death) was a Lie?"

Deedat replied: "Not worse than when you(atheist) die and discover that Herafter is the Truth. " ***

The story explains how different humans will always have an Anchor ⚓ for them. Religion is the best anchor for any human to live and die, regardless of their religion, the mere idea of a creator let humans survive with ease.

We all die but some die while believing on something. While others die thinking it's the end. But is it the end? Only death will tell us.

Some will try to find the truth about their life and death while believing on something and while others will think it's an accident, both will live and die.

Fact is only Death will teach us the reality of our existence. Or maybe someday you'll be at a stage where you wish a creator exists to solve your problem.

May Allah(SWT) guide all of us. Ameen.

A God does exist and science itself proves that, the chances of life occurring on earth it self and the numerous possibilities evolution and the environment could have taken but at each evolution junction we were sooo "lucky" that evolution kept progressing in the direction that favored us and ended with humans, it can be called coincidence the first time, luck the second time, but after the third time you can no longer call it any of those, it becomes so obvious that there's definitely a being guiding the process or even implemented the process in the first place which led to the birth of our species, so to say there's no God and say you believe in science is just dumb. Thank you.

Those who can't understand the existence of God are called agnostics, this is different from not believing in God as they instead suspend judgement.
The truth is that arguing for God and against God is nearly useless as science doesn't deal in things that do not follow physical laws, so there will most likely never be true and absolute proof one way or another. Another way to look at it is that for this topic to be in the domain of science God would need to be subject to laws that he "created"; this is contradicts his attributes (I am talking about the Abrahamic religion's God).
I am a Muslim and believe in Allah, but I won't try to convince others until I can reason it out myself... (the woes of taking philosophy)

This is a paradox. An infinite loop. Simplex answer is limit, infinity, death, creation etc are also creations.

Sounds complex but is simple. It's like a developer creates a game engine then create a game in it. What he did was created a set of instructions and regulations though which a game can be created, and set boundaries on characters.

Now imagine if the game developer is immortal. But he created "death" so the main character can die after certain variables are met(old age, accident etc).

That's why the idea of a creator who was not created by something is the best way to move forward. It's the reality.

It's impossible to explain, brother. In science theory about dimensions, we're seen as three-dimensional beings. I once heard a comparison between humans and monkeys for beings in higher dimensions, suggesting that those from the 4th dimension might perceive us and our technology similarly to how we view monkeys.

According to this theory, Allah or any other "creator" you believe in (or don't believe in but you believe in this theory) exists outside of dimensions, meaning that whatever number you put before the word "dimension," he created it. How can we possibly comprehend how such a being works with our three-dimensional brains?

That is why Allah always mentions the "heart", because he can't be viewed by a limited brain, but the heart can see him.

Note: That doesn't mean it is 100% based on emotions and so on, you can find tons of scientific facts that are proven to be right in it, and the ones that people disagree with can't 100% disapprove, that is how we are strong in our faith, otherwise we wouldn't just accept it and even fight for it.

I'm an atheist who grew up in an extremely religious household which turned me away from religion early on in life and I've thought about this question before but I have to say I'd still rather be an atheist even if the existence of god is confirmed. For me it's not just about what happens after the fact, if a god can allow his creations to suffer the way the we do on earth while he goes out for milk for a few billion years why should we put our faith in him? And who's to say your belief will be rewarded? etc. At the end of the day most religions are just based upon unquestioning belief and as someone who holds my own ideals above all else there was just never a chance of me being religious whether god was backed by science or not.

I would love to see how much you've studied religions or your own religion particularly.

Also, Humans are responsible for their own actions and a god has nothing go do with it. A universe's creator has nothing to do with Russia vs Ukraine war, right?. We're insignificant in front of the bigger picture.

As Shakespeare said: "All the world is a stage".
We play our significant part and then go off stage(death). The world outside the stage is Eternal. There's no death there. Because the Director created a thing called "death" so the character can play their part on the stage and then leave, making room for next generations. Until the Director says "Cut". This will go on. Judgment arrives after the Cut, right?

Life is cruel and only gives you one chance.

If life is a test, some of us will top it and many will fail. It's all Luck buddy. All luck.

As a Christian, I’ll say I find Pascal’s Wager to be an unsatisfactory argument, mainly because it presumes the irrelevancy of other religions. Yes, when discussing the decision between Atheism and Christianity (or Islam, in your case), obviously the best decision is to believe in God.

When coming at the POV of an Atheist, who doesn’t have that presupposition, they have to choose which religion has it right - is it one of the Abrahamic religions? The old European pagans? The Buddhists of the East? The Animists of the Africans and Natives?

Perhaps this ventures into the “No True Scotsman” Fallacy,
(though I always struggled with that, because for many things there are actually regulations/declared limitations to being a part of something - if the proverbial ‘false Scotsman’ isn’t a citizen or ethnically Scottish, do they still get to represent Scottish people? Or should there be a basic understanding of limitations, that one needs to follow the basic rules of their group before being able to doctrinally split.)
but the Bible lays out a clear story and message - for Christians, following Christ’s words is their “citizenship” in this fallacy’s context. If one claims to be Christian, but flagrantly and unapologetically ignores the most basic of Jesus’ teachings, why do they still get to represent Christians to the world? Should they not be rightfully labeled as a false Christian?

The point, is that religion is a personal issue. Everyone has their own experiences, bias, curiosity, etc. You should believe in a religion not because your family does, and you’ve been ‘grandfathered’ in without true faith, or because you culturally believe it.

You should believe because of a legitimate personal spiritual interaction that impacts your life.
