Chapter 50: Dream

Imperial Doula Miriam slowly helped Ryu sit up. "Slowly, slowly. You've been asleep for so long that you're definitely suffering from more than a few bedsores. Also, your muscles have significantly weakened – it's okay to rely on this old lady. I might look frail, but I'm still a Pulse Opening realm expert."

Ryu coughed slightly under the strain, but still managed a small smile. "Aren't there babies out there who need your help far more than me?"

"I'm retired, this old lady can spend her time as she pleases." She spoke dismissively, raising a cup of water to Ryu's dry lips. She had tried to keep him hydrated during his coma, but it was extremely difficult. In the end, she had no choice but to sustain his life with her own energy. She felt gratified that she had given her life to the medical field.

Taking Ryu's weak body into her arms, she carried him into the bath house, meticulously stripping away his dirtied clothes. Ryu didn't seem too embarrassed by this prospect as he had long since treated the old Doula as his grandmother. Plus, if he didn't receive this help, he didn't believe that he could do it alone.

Imperial Doula Miriam sighed when she saw the sight of Ryu's bare back. His spine protruded outward along with his ribs and his skin had become so sickly that thinned veins of blue and green were clearly visible. But, by far the worst part was the visage of terrible scars that ran across his shoulders and back like the trenches of a muddy battlefield.

"Is it that bad?" Ryu said through a pained chuckle. How could a mortal body not scar in the face of such torture? Ryu had already expected as much.

"It's bad, but it isn't the end of the world. A man with battle scars is the dream of any woman." Having learned that lying to her Little Ryu would accomplish nothing, she used a different tactic.

"Maybe if the scars were earned on the battlefield…" Ryu said softly. "I'm not sure if there's a market for men who gained scars being beaten by their own grandfather and mother."

A pained expression colored the old Doula's face as she brought a warm, moist toilette to Ryu's back to begin wiping the accumulated dirt and grime from him. Although a sort of phantom pain overwhelming Ryu as he felt each bump of every one of his scars, he bit the inside of his lip to stop himself from crying out.

Maybe in the face of his pride, keeping silent was easier for him. But he had always been the most vulnerable around Miriam.

"Would you like to listen to a story?" Imperial Doula Miriam asked. The truth was that Ryu had been banned from the royal library ever since he was old enough to read. Of course, this didn't make too much of a difference considering he was blind, but there were many sections of the library he was still unallowed to send his own servants to. In the end, much of his entertainment came from the old Doula telling him stories.

Truth be told, it was because of Miriam that Ryu was able to gain a scope of what the world held. He learned about concepts he had never experienced himself, broadening his horizons to new heights. Maybe the only thing the old Doula had never told him was just why he was ostracized by his family.

Still, Ryu was intelligent. Was he really born blind? Why did he have such vivid memories about what things looked like, then? Plus, why was it that his hair was forcibly dyed everyday? Why was it that his third brother had called his mother a whore back then? Anyone with half a mind could begin to piece together the meaning behind all of these things…

Even without knowing the true story, Ryu's guess wasn't too far from the reality. It was a truth he found hilarious if not utterly enraging – but it was somehow his truth, nonetheless.

"How about I tell you a story instead?" Ryu smiled.

"Where did you come by this story?" Miriam said with a surprised expression.

Ryu looked off into the distance. While he was in his coma, he had had a dream so vivid that it almost seemed real to him. But, when he awoke, he was slapped with reality. How could such a perfect life be his own? What a joke.

But, he felt that if he didn't speak this dream aloud, it would disappear from his mind forever. If that happened, Ryu didn't know if he'd survive. Although he hadn't broken down yet… He was akin to a tattered feather blowing in the wind, still unable to grasp his own future.

"Let's just say it was a dream of mine…" Ryu said lightly.

"Oh? The old lady is listening."

"On the highest plane of all of existence, there exists a mountain so tall that even the clouds can only hug its feet. Three moons shine among the stars at night, and three suns blaze in the morning air.

"Within this highest plane, there was a family that stood above the rest. The father could shatter the earth was a single step. The mother was gentle beyond compare, lighting the world with her beauty and smile. The grandmothers were phoenixes who soared through the skies, protecting their family with a feverish might. And the grandfathers could pierce the clouds with a single roar.

"To this family, a child was born. Although he was weak and frail, he was cherished like a treasure. In return, he blessed this family too. They rose to a greater height together, relying on one another as a family should.

"Hundreds of years into this child's life, he met a valiant woman who understood how to fight for her own freedom. She stood before him and demanded his love not only for her sake, but for his as well.

"Over time, these two fell in love. She blossomed into a great expert, while he learned to fight for his own freedoms. They were a star-crossed story that should have never come together, yet they formed a bond unbreakable even through lives.

"Unfortunately, even this heart-felt story had its own ups and downs. The greed of those on the outside caused jealousy to be aimed toward this family. In the end, the child was forced into a corner where he was forced into making a decision he labored over.

"In the end, for the sake of his family, the child took his own life, leaving behind a promise to his beloved."

Imperial Doula Miriam wiped her cheeks with a free hand. How could she not sense the longing in Little Ryu's words? "Call me Granny Miriam from now on, okay?"

So he has noone to help him with whatever schemes he might come up with. Nor can he even request people to read him books from library to better know the situation. Too abandoned... but yes, having that much pride isn't too good. But then it's not like he has much left to hold onto since his troubles have started since his birth.

It actually makes a bit angry that he was so intelligent and self aware as a 3 year old kid and even later he knew the King would fail his awakening. Despite all that the MC never did anything to change things, that makes me angry, the MC being a prideful and stubborn fool without strength to back it up makes me more angry. I through he had everything planned out, turns out he just didn't care and was too stupid to be low profile. Why even stay in the palace in the first place if you don't even bother following norms or have the strength to ignore the rules? I say he brought the torture to himself, cruel as that sounds.

So far the MC has shown only to have a silver tongue, the only thing carrying this novel so far. His attitude sucks, at least in the past life he had daddy and mommy to protect him. Here he is just an smartass asshole with no one to protect him. Serves him right.

You are so damn stupid I encourage you to drop this book. You do realize he doesn't have his past lives memories and has been constantly monitored at all times and crippled? Yet you somehow expect the most hated person in the castle to somehow make a comeback or escape under constant surveillance? And his pride is something he instinctually inherited from his past life and is the only thing that has actually kept him going, do you actually expect a normal child to be able to handle being tortured to near death and having their own family hate them? Do you not understand that the difficulties he's going through is the exact challenge he's supposed to overcome for the trial? How can you be so unbelievable stupid and so confidently so.

Well it's been a while since I read this part. But tell me where it says he was "constantly monitored". A quote from the novel. Because Im pretty sure he was left on his own device in his mother place for years, of course he could not leave by the front doors, but he was not under surveillance. And why was he the most hated? Guess what, because of his attitude. With his smarts he should know why he should act innocent like a good boy and not just cold and prideful.

"Normal child". Normal child where? Did we read the same novel? He has been self aware since he was a BABY! It doesn't matter if he doesn't remember his past, he was smart, intelligent, self aware of his surrounds, of everything that was happening and would happen. That's not a children anymore! "Normal child" my ass. Even without his memory he was an adult in a baby body basically.

And that's is my problem, something you don't seem to understand and then call my stupid (and I'm stupid, but not for what you call me), you only read what author says and take it face value. HE WAS NEVER A NORMAL CHILD. Think outside the box. What's the biggest advantage of a child? No, of a baby? The court, his father (and the queen and her son, if I remember correctly) were afraid of his genius potencial, "to become or develop into something in the future", they were afraid of his future but he was still considered JUST a child, they treated him as JUST a child. And you would be right if he was just a NORMAL child, he would never be able to escape, but he was not a normal child, hence why I angry when I wrote the comment, they underestimate him, and that was his big chance, by being a child he was treated as a child, by being self aware and knowing what his father would do he could (should) make a escape plan, he didn't, he stayed put in his mom's place for dozen of years.

My argument falls flat if you find the quote where it says he was under surveillance 24/7 since he was a baby. Because if not, being treated as kid but with an adult's mind (even without his memory) should be easy to escape, especially with years of preparation. Would he survive the outside? Would he actually go far? Probably not, but that's not the argument.

Again, MC was not a normal child, stop treating like he was.

Why the dislikes? Though my feelings are not as exaggerated as this guy, it's still the same nonetheless
        - even if Ryu were young. He should have enough intelligence to know the result of his actions as he is so smart and already know the cruelness of the world the best

Just read the guys comment. "Normal child". He considers the MC as a normal child, and by my downvotes and his upvotes apparently he is not alone. They all seemingly seems to forget MC was self aware as a baby, already showing his smarts to the court as a 3y baby. They forget the king was using his oldest sisters to get info from him on how to better develop the kingdom.

"Normal child" yeah right. Imagine if MC hadn't showed his intelligence and wits, he would be just a kid with potencial (then crippled) ignored by everyone. Perfect for escaping.

Pity MC was just a normal child, not smart, not aware, just a clueless innocent little boy. If only, if only he was aware.

You have a point, but don't forget that he is a cripple, with forcefully blocked meridians, and we can't be sure did he know about "forcefully blocked" part, or he thought that he has really no way to cultivate.
And so where should he escape, he doesn't know outside world, he doesn't have any idea what to do, and most importantly - yes he was ridiculed, and not allowed into library, but otherwise he lived pretty ordinary normal life. What would have improved if he fled? Nothing, well he won't have survelience but what next? And even more, he is a mortal while his father has cultivators and guards and people that would search for him, where can a blind mortal flee so that the King can't find him?
The only thing that I agree with you about - is that he shouldn't have been so arrogant, but guess that's been transfered to him from original Ryu. It's a bad trait, but guess what - even geniuses are also people, and so they can have bad traits, that can admit or not admit to themselves. Arrogance of the old Ryu was warranted because of his accomplishments and backing, small Ryu is a genius, but even if he understands that the arrogance is bad for his situation - ha can do nothing with it. It's how humans' psyche works. It's like a person understanding that work out is usefull, but he is lazy (his bad trait), and so even if he knows it's bad to continue sitting at the computer all day - he won't start working out. Same with other bad traits, you can aknowledge them, but not have will to fight them, and arrogance is especially vicious in that regard, because it clouds your thinking - "I'm the cleverest, all others are just stupid sheeps".

Damn I thought he had his memories from when he was born. Hope he fully awakens them in the near future. Also the reason why his eyes are "blind" I think is his heavenly pupils have come with him too to his new life but he can't take the strain because he's kid still without the help of heavenly treasures to support it
