Chapter 451: forced marriage

York pulled his daughter Dorothy to a corner on the second floor of the Chamber of Commerce.

He kept wiping the sweat on his forehead with a handkerchief, trying to use this method to ease the fear and surprise in his heart.

At the same time, York’s gaze carefully looked through the gap of the window on the second floor and looked at a young figure standing in the hall on the first floor.

Joshua.

York remembered the young man’s name. At the same time, he also knew that this young man was the ‘buyer’who came from Nolan.

At first, when York saw the young appearance of this ‘buyer’, he did not believe that Joshua had the ability to buy the silver-patterned chamber of Commerce from the bottom of his heart.

He also firmly believed that his daughter must have been deceived by this young man!

It was not until another person appeared that York realized how shallow and stupid his previous thoughts were.

That was Ambassador Diaz from Faroese, who was also the person who brought the new theatrical form of film to Osenberg.

Now that “Avatar”had completely become popular in Osenberg, even if York did not pay much attention to the film, he could hear that the theater’s business was booming.

Undoubtedly, “Movies”had become an industry that was even more profitable than the patented magic-conducting machinery.

Watching Minister Diaz and the young man chatting cheerfully, and even showing a humble attitude from time to time.

The businessman immediately remembered that he had seen the name Joshua in the cast list of “Avatar”!

Joshua Arnold.

A surname that he had never heard of, but it was hung at the top of the cast list of ‘Avatar’, and it had a bunch of titles, such as ‘director’, ‘producer’, ‘planner’and so on..

These series of titles were enough for York to confirm that the young man was the producer of ‘Avatar’!

“Father, you have agreed to the terms of the acquisition, is there anything else that needs to be discussed? I’m very busy right now.”

Dorothy did not quite understand why she had to avoid Joshua during the conversation.

“Dorothy.”The old businessman asked carefully, “What’s your… relationship with Joshua?”

“It’s a very ordinary partnership,”Dorothy answered her father truthfully. “He has his eyes on the silver-patterned chamber of Commerce. As the agent of the Chamber of Commerce, I’m negotiating with him. That’s all.”

“A partnership? How is that possible…”

York still had a good idea of the value of the silver-patterned chamber of Commerce.

When he had gone to Nolan, he had seen the publicity for the movie “Avatar”everywhere.

Nolan was a trial ground for businessmen. If they wanted to make a name for themselves there, and even hung posters of “Avatar”on every house, York could already imagine the capital that young man had, it was not something he could imagine.

An existence on the level of a monster like him would never take a fancy to a small chamber of Commerce that was close to bankruptcy.

Therefore, York could only think of one possibility.

“Dorothy, will he be interested in you?”York asked tentatively. “Perhaps he bought our chamber of Commerce… For You.”

Dorothy blushed when she was asked this question, but soon her expression turned gloomy.

“Father! Please stop guessing these meaningless things!”

“No… Dorothy, you’ve been an adult for more than a year. The daughter of the Golden Viper Chamber of Commerce got engaged when she just came of age. Now that she has a child, i… Don’t I hope you can find a good home?”? “All the young boys in Orson Castle can’t resist your charm. He’s also a young man, and…”

“Stop,”Dorothy coldly berated her father, “I have no plans to get married for the time being. All I’ve done is to save the silver-patterned flower chamber of Commerce. Father, please don’t interfere with my marriage choice anymore. Besides, Josh already has someone he likes!”

“Someone he likes? It doesn’t matter. With your charm, it’s easy to snatch him away. A man is actually…”

Dorothy covered her ears and stopped listening to her father’s crazy talk. She quickly left the room.

..

Hiri, who was drinking a glass of orange juice, suddenly raised his head.

“What’s Wrong?”

Josh noticed Hiri’s unusual behavior.

“I just feel a strange sense of danger,”Hiri said as he placed the orange juice on the table.

“Maybe the purple-clothed person wants to mark you as having failed the exam.”

Josh used his hand to play with the death wing on Hiri’s shoulder. This death wing was completely like a puppy that had not grown up. It did not have the dignity of a giant dragon.

“Teacher should be… unable to monitor this place.”

“Then it seems that I should finish the things here quickly.”

Josh waved his hand and sent minister Diaz away.

After coming to Orson Castle, Josh spent some time to inform Crondo III via text message. Therefore, the minister went to the silver-patterned chamber of Commerce and handed the bill that recorded the ‘box office’to Josh.

At present, Joshua had basically settled all the matters in Orson Castle, and all the contracts of the silver-patterned chamber of Commerce had been obtained.

In regards to the method of renovating the ‘Internet cafe’, Joshua would be instructing the acting store owner, Dorothy, for a period of time in the future.

Now..

“What do you think this is?”

Joshua looked at an item that was similar to a stone slab on the table. The surface of the stone slab was completely smooth, just like a mirror,

“Nolan’s underground relic. We found one or two similar objects in the Crystal Palace as exhibits, but its function is still unknown.”

The gray-clothed man sat in front of Josh. The Owl on the gray-clothed man’s shoulder poked the thing with its beak a few times.

“Actually, I also have a collection. It was left behind when I was fighting with a suspicious guy in Squirrel Street.”

Joshua picked up the slate on the table with his hand. A long time ago, when Joshua was at Squirrel Street, he met a strange man in a gray robe. He also left behind this thing when he was running away.

When Joshua injected the gray magic power into the slate, the surface of the mirror suddenly rippled and a light blue interface appeared.

“You… you actually activated it!”

The gray-robed man was slightly startled by this scene. He stared at the Azure Light that appeared on the stone slab, appearing rather excited.

But when Joshua handed the stone slab to the gray-robed man, the stone slab once again lost its source of power and became an ordinary ‘mirror’.

“Nolan, thousands of spellcasters tried to activate this stone slab, but in the end, there was no effect. You activated it instead.”The gray-robed man returned the stone slab to Joshua. “Could it be that this has something to do with your race?”

The gray-clothed man did not forget that the young man sitting in front of him was a chaos demon.

“I’m not too sure either. It’s just that even if this thing is activated… it doesn’t seem to have any effect.”

Joshua touched the mirror with his hand. The stone tablet looked a little like a cell phone on Earth.

However, the function of this thing was not as comprehensive as a cell phone. After Joshua injected magic power into it, it could only stay on one screen.

In this screen, there was only a circular ripple that was constantly spreading out.

“There are still many suspicious points left in these relics. If you have time in the future, come to my mage tower.”

The gray-clothed person also gave up trying to understand the function of this thing from these circular ripples. However, Joshua’s magic power was able to activate it, which gave him a new breakthrough point.

“I also have some questions about the construction of the web page.”

“I’ll visit you when I have time.”

Not long after Joshua agreed to the gray-clothed person’s request, Dorothy also came down from the second floor.

“Have you finished your discussion with your father?”Joshua asked.

“Yes.”

Dorothy’s expression was a little strange when she thought of the conversation just now, but she quickly controlled her emotions.

“I can already start to renovate the lobby on the first floor.”Dorothy pulled the topic to the main topic.

“I can give you some sketches of the design in this aspect. It’s actually not too difficult.”

Jose was preparing to build the first ‘Internet Cafe’in the world. Before this, Dorothy did not have any experience to refer to.

This was a historical event. In the future, this girl might be called the ‘mother of internet cafes’or something like that.

“Also, to provide the user’s experience, the magic net actually has some external facilities.”

Josh remembered the original crystal mouse that he had given to Hili and Gloria. It was time to popularize it in this internet cafe.

York pulled his daughter to a secluded corner on the second floor of the chamber of commerce.

He repeatedly dabbed at the sweat beading on his forehead with a handkerchief, the nervous gesture a futile attempt to quell the fear and astonishment churning within him.
Simultaneously, York’s gaze darted furtively through a crack in the second-floor window, fixated on the youthful figure standing in the hall below.

    Joshua.

The young man’s name was now etched in his memory, alongside the unsettling realization that this seemingly unassuming individual was the ‘buyer’ from Norland.

Initially, the ‘buyer’s’ youthful appearance had sown seeds of doubt in York’s mind. He had dismissed the notion that Joshua possessed the means to acquire the struggling Silver Flower Chamber.

He had stubbornly clung to the belief that his daughter had fallen prey to the young man’s deception.

It was only with the arrival of another prominent figure that York’s shallow assumptions had crumbled, revealing his own foolishness.

Ambassador Diaz from Farucci, the very individual who had introduced the captivating new art form of theater to Osenberg, now stood in the hall below.

With “Avatar’s” overwhelming popularity sweeping the city, even York, who paid little attention to such entertainment, couldn’t ignore the booming success of the theater.
Undeniably, “Movies” had blossomed into an industry eclipsing even the lucrative, patented magic-conducting machinery.

Watching Minister Diaz engage in cheerful conversation with the young man, even displaying moments of deference, a chilling realization dawned upon the businessman. He vaguely recalled seeing the name Joshua in the “Avatar” cast list!

    Joshua Annerlaude.

A surname unfamiliar to him, yet it had occupied the apex of the ‘Avatar’ cast list, accompanied by a string of impressive titles: ‘director,’ ‘producer,’ ‘planner,’ and more.

This impressive array of roles was sufficient for York to finally grasp the truth – this young man was the driving force behind ‘Avatar’!

“Father, you have agreed to the terms of the acquisition, is there anything else that needs to be discussed? I’m very busy right now.”
Dorothy, her mind already focused on the logistics of the impending transformation, failed to fully comprehend her father’s need for hushed secrecy.

“Dorothy.” The old businessman’s voice was hesitant, laced with concern. “What is your… relationship with Joshua?”

“It’s a very ordinary partnership,” she replied truthfully, her brow furrowed slightly at his persistent questioning. “He has his eyes on the Silver Flower. As the acting head of the Chamber of Commerce, I’m negotiating with him. That’s all.”

“A partnership? How is that possible…”

York still possessed a realistic understanding of the Silver Flower’s diminished value.
During his ill-fated trip to Norland, he had witnessed the pervasive publicity for the movie “Avatar.”

Norland was a competitive arena for businessmen. To achieve such widespread recognition, plastering “Avatar” posters on nearly every building, York could only imagine the immense capital the young man commanded – a scale far beyond his own comprehension.

An entity of such monstrous success would surely never fixate on a small, near-bankrupt chamber of commerce.

Therefore, York could only conceive of one plausible explanation.

“Dorothy, could he be… interested in you?” York asked tentatively, his gaze searching his daughter’s face. “Perhaps he is acquiring our chamber of Commerce… for you.”

A flush crept up Dorothy’s neck at the unexpected question, but her expression soon hardened into a scowl.

“Father! Please stop indulging in these meaningless speculations!”

“No… Dorothy, you’ve been a woman grown for over a year now. The daughter of the Golden Viper Chamber of Commerce was betrothed upon reaching her majority. Now she has a child, and I… don’t I hope you can find a good partner? All the young men in the city are captivated by your charm. He is also a young man, and…”

“Stop,” Dorothy interjected sharply, her tone leaving no room for argument. “I have no plans for marriage in the foreseeable future. My sole focus is salvaging this chamber. Father, please refrain from interfering with my personal choices. Besides, Joshua already has someone he cares for!”

“Someone he likes? That is of little consequence. With your allure, it would be a simple matter to win him over. A man is actually…”

Dorothy clapped her hands over her ears, effectively silencing her father’s increasingly outlandish pronouncements. With a frustrated sigh, she quickly left the room, eager to return to the more pressing matter at hand.

    ..

Ciri, idly sipping a glass of vibrant orange juice, suddenly lifted her head, her senses on high alert.

    “What’s Wrong?”

Joshua, ever observant, noticed her abrupt change in demeanor.

“I just feel a strange sense of unease,” Ciri said, her brow furrowed as she placed the glass back on the table.

“Perhaps Purple Sage Mellor intends to deduct points for inadequate vigilance during your ‘holiday’ assignment.”

Joshua idly stroked the miniature Neltharion perched on Ciri’s shoulder. The pseudo-dragon, in its current diminutive form, possessed none of the majestic bearing of its true lineage, resembling more a playful, oversized puppy.

“Teacher should be… unable to monitor this specific location.”

“Then it seems prudent to conclude our business here swiftly.”

“Thank you, Minister,” Joshua said, with a slight gesture indicating their conversation was complete.

Following their arrival in Osenberg, Joshua had briefly communicated with Klund III via text message. Consequently, the minister had made his way to the Silver Flower Chamber of Commerce to deliver the financial report detailing the ‘box office’ earnings to Joshua.

At present, Joshua had finalized all the necessary arrangements, securing all the relevant contracts pertaining to the Chamber of Commerce.

Regarding the intricate process of renovating the establishment into an ‘Internet cafe,’ he would be providing guidance to the acting store owner, Dorothy, in the days to come.

    Now…

“What do you make of this?”

Joshua’s attention turned to an object resting on the table, resembling a smooth, obsidian stone slab, its surface polished to a mirror-like sheen.

“A relic from Norland’s underground. We possess one or two similar artifacts within the Crystal Palace exhibits, but their precise function remains an enigma.”

The Gray Sage Lursk sat opposite him, his wise gaze fixed on the object. The owl perched on his shoulder inquisitively poked the smooth surface with its beak several times.

“I also possess one such item. It was inadvertently left behind during an altercation with a suspicious individual in Squirrel Street.”
Joshua picked up the slate, its cool surface surprisingly smooth. He recalled the encounter in Squirrel Street, the fleeting image of a gray-robed figure and the sudden appearance of this enigmatic object.

As Joshua channeled his unique gray magic power into the slate, the mirror-like surface shimmered, and a soft, light blue interface materialized.

“You… you have actually activated it!”

The Gray Sage’s usual composure wavered, a flicker of astonishment in his ancient eyes. He stared intently at the azure light emanating from the stone slab, his expression bordering on excitement.

But the moment Joshua offered the stone slab to him, its ethereal glow vanished, reverting to an ordinary, inert ‘mirror.’

“In Norland, countless mages have attempted to activate these stone slabs, all to no avail. Yet, you have succeeded.” The Gray Sage returned the slate to Joshua, his voice thoughtful. “Could this phenomenon be linked to your… lineage?”

The wise old mage had not forgotten the young man seated before him was, in essence, a chaos demon.

“I am uncertain. It appears that even when activated… its purpose remains elusive.”
Joshua traced the smooth surface of the mirror with his fingertip. The stone tablet bore a faint resemblance to the archaic cell phones of Earth.

However, its functionality was far from comprehensive. After injecting his magic power, it would only illuminate a single, unchanging screen.

On this screen, a solitary, circular ripple emanated outwards, its purpose inscrutable.
“These relics still harbor numerous perplexing aspects. Should you find yourself with time in the future, I invite you to visit my tower.”

The Gray Sage, temporarily abandoning his attempts to decipher the swirling ripples, recognized the significance of Joshua’s unique ability to activate the device.
“I also have several inquiries regarding the construction of the web page.”

“I will endeavor to visit when my schedule permits.”

Not long after Joshua agreed to his request, Dorothy descended from the second floor, her expression a carefully neutral mask.

“Have you concluded your discussion with your father?” Joshua inquired, his gaze meeting hers.

    “Yes.”

A fleeting shadow crossed her features as she recalled the strained conversation, but she quickly regained her composure.

“I can begin the renovations of the lobby on the first floor immediately,” Dorothy stated, steering the conversation back to the practicalities at hand.

“I can provide you with some initial design sketches. It’s not an overly complex undertaking.”

Joshua was on the cusp of establishing the world’s first ‘Internet Cafe.’ Dorothy, understandably, lacked any prior experience in such a novel endeavor.

This was a moment of historical significance, though neither fully grasped its implications. In the future, this determined young woman might well be hailed as the ‘mother of internet cafes’ or a similar moniker.

“Furthermore, to enhance the user experience, the magic net can be augmented with certain external peripherals.”

Joshua’s thoughts drifted to the originum crystal mouse he had gifted Ciri and Gallolie. The time had come to introduce this innovative input device to his nascent internet cafe.
