Chapter 499: Ke Yin VS Wei Lin

When I emerged on the other side, the difference hit me immediately.

Being inside the Proving Sanctum felt completely different from watching Wu Kangming and Luo Yichen's battle on the formation screens. Through the viewing arrays, the crystal realm had looked beautiful but distant, like watching a play performed on a stage. Now, standing within it, every surface felt like it was alive.

The walls weren't just reflecting light anymore. They were reflecting everything about me. My spiritual energy, my intentions, even my thoughts seemed to shimmer back at me from dozens of different angles. The geometric patterns carved into the crystal surfaces weren't just decorative either. They were moving, shifting, responding to something I couldn't quite identify.

But more than anything else, I felt relief at fighting in my own body again.

All those previous battles in inner worlds had required me to possess vessels, to work through other people's bodies and cultivation systems. The Realm of Living Lyrics with Mo Yuhang, the Realm of the Chosen with Du Yanze, the Mortal Martial World with Jinghui. Each time, I'd had to adapt to different physical forms, learn new energy systems, work within the limitations of someone else's cultivation base.

Fighting in my own body meant I could use my full range of techniques without worrying about compatibility issues. No need to translate qi into harmonic essence or figure out how to make runes work with martial energy. Just me, my cultivation base, and all the abilities I'd spent months developing and refining.

That's when it happened.

Suddenly, I felt like something was trying to tear my soul right out of my body. Not gradually or gently, but with the violent force of a hurricane trying to uproot a tree. My vision blurred as an invisible force grabbed hold of my very essence and began pulling it away from my physical form.

For a terrifying moment, I thought I was about to be forcibly ejected from Ke Yin's body, exposed as the imposter I really was in front of thousands of spectators and the sect's most powerful elders. My soul felt like it was stretching, becoming thin and translucent as whatever force governed this realm tried to separate me from my vessel.

Then the Genesis Seed's roots, those vast network of spiritual connections that had grown throughout my inner world, wrapped around my soul like protective armor. They held me tight, anchoring me to this body with the full strength of the World Tree Sutra's foundation. The pulling sensation stopped abruptly, leaving me gasping but intact.

Outwardly, nothing looked unusual. I was still standing in the same spot, still breathing normally, still appearing to be nothing more than Ke Yin preparing for his semi-final match. No one watching would realize what had just happened. But inwardly, I was shaken to my core.

"Master," Azure said quietly in my mind. "That was the realm testing you. This place operates on the principle of the Dao of Truth. It tried to expose what it perceived as deception, to force the real you to separate from the false identity you're wearing."

I held back a frown, my mind racing through what that could mean for me. Had the Proving Sanctum been chosen specifically to expose me? Did Sect Master Yuan or someone else in the sect suspect that I wasn't really Ke Yin? The possibility made my stomach clench with anxiety. That was my biggest secret.

But no, that didn't make sense. I hadn't shown any obvious signs of being an imposter. Ke Yin had just been recruited when I took over his body, and I knew his memories, his relationships, his history. If the sect leadership suspected me of being a body snatcher or possession victim, they wouldn't handle it through a tournament. They'd drag me to a private chamber and interrogate me with methods I probably couldn't survive.

More likely, this was exactly what Elder Wan had implied when he mentioned the Proving Sanctum being designed for testing disciples at the highest levels. They wanted to know what kind of person their most promising students really were, stripped of pretense and deception. The Dao of Truth would reveal hidden character flaws, expose secret motivations, force people to confront who they actually were beneath all their masks and social personas.

Fortunately, the Genesis Seed had been able to hide the biggest lie of my existence. Whatever protection the World Tree Sutra provided went deep enough to fool even a realm built on absolute truth.

But this situation wasn't entirely bad. Looking across the chamber at Wei Lin, I found myself wondering if the Dao of Truth might finally let me understand what was really going on with my friend.

The red tint in his eyes was more pronounced now, and there was something about his posture that seemed different. More aggressive, more predatory than the calculating but friendly merchant I'd grown used to. If this realm forced truth to the surface, maybe I'd finally get some answers about how the demonic qi was affecting him.

We made eye contact across the polished crystal floor, and Wei Lin began speaking.

"You know, Ke Yin," he said, his tone conversational but carrying an undercurrent I didn't recognize, "when you first entered the sect, I knew there was something special about you."

I said nothing, just watched his face carefully.

"It seemed like a good business investment to become friends with you," Wei Lin continued, a slight smile playing around his lips. "I could tell you had potential, and cultivators with potential become valuable connections. Simple cost-benefit analysis."

I nodded slightly. That was pretty clear to me already, given how profit-focused Wei Lin had always been. He'd never hidden his merchant family background or his tendency to view relationships in terms of mutual benefit. It was one of the things I actually respected about him; his honesty about his motivations. And it was nice seeing how he had changed over time and even gone out of his way to help my own cultivation.

But then Wei Lin's expression shifted, became more complex. "But then I realized that you weren't like the others. Whether it was the arrogant clan disciples who looked down on everyone from their high horses, or the village kids who were so desperate to prove themselves they'd step on anyone's neck to climb higher, you were just... simple. Genuine."

A look of confusion and resistance flashed across Wei Lin's face, like he was fighting against saying something. It disappeared quickly, but I caught it. The Dao of Truth was definitely at work here, forcing him to voice thoughts he might normally keep hidden.

"You helped people without expecting anything in return," he said, his voice growing slightly strained. "Even though you were secretive about your own techniques. You actually cared when Lin Mei was having trouble with her cultivation, when Liu Chen was worried about Rocky, when I was frustrated with my marketplace development. Not because it benefited you, but because you genuinely wanted your friends to succeed. And I will never forget how you saved my father’s life and my own."

I felt a warmth in my chest at his words, even knowing they were being forced out by the realm's influence. It was good to know that my attempts to be a decent person had been noticed and appreciated.

Wei Lin laughed, but there was a bitter edge to the sound. "When I broke through to ninth stage Qi Condensation and was ahead of you for the first time, I was so proud. Finally, I thought, I'd achieved something first. I was leading instead of following." His eyes met mine, and I could see pain there mixed with the red tint of demonic influence. "Then you went into meditation for what, a few hours? And came out as a ninth stage cultivator like it was nothing."

The walls around us seemed to pulse brighter, responding to the emotional intensity of his words.

"And when I broke through to tenth stage Qi Condensation," Wei Lin continued, his hands clenching into fists at his sides, "a realm that's supposed to be legendary, that most cultivators never even dream of reaching, you went and achieved Pseudo-Elemental Realm. It feels like no matter what I accomplish, no matter how hard I work or how clever my techniques become, you'll always be one step ahead."

I could hear the frustration and hurt in his voice, and it made my heart ache. "Wei Lin," I said, trying to keep my tone gentle and reassuring, "we're best friends. No matter what our cultivation realms are, no matter how far apart our power levels get, that's never going to change. You're one of the most important people in my life."

Wei Lin smiled, but it was a wry, pained expression that didn't reach his eyes. He shook his head slowly. "I understand how the cultivation world works, Ke Yin. Those who can't keep up get left behind. They get forgotten. Childhood friends become distant memories when one person reaches the clouds and the other is still crawling through the dirt."

"That won't happen with us," I tried to protest, but Wei Lin cut me off with a sudden burst of qi that sent shockwaves through the chamber. Cracks appeared in the floor around his feet, and the geometric patterns on the walls flared.

"Today," he said, his voice carrying the weight of absolute determination, "I'm going to prove that I'm your equal. That I deserve to stand beside you, not behind you."

Without any further warning, Wei Lin's fist erupted into flames. The fire wasn't normal cultivation energy, but something darker, tinged with the red-black essence of his demonic qi stall. He punched through the air with devastating force, sending a compressed fist of flame racing toward me at incredible speed.

I reacted on pure instinct, flinging my wrist to release the seeds from my storage ring. They scattered across the crystal battlefield in a wide arc, each one infused with just enough qi to serve as an anchor point for my Verduring Step technique.

The flaming fist was an inch away from my face when I suddenly disappeared, green light flowing through the space between dimensions as I teleported to one of the seeds behind Wei Lin. I materialized already in position for a Phantom Strike, my palm aimed at the center of his back where the force transfer would be most effective.

But Wei Lin had anticipated this. As my strike connected, his body became partially intangible, void essence from his marketplace making the targeted region phase out of normal reality. My Phantom Strike passed harmlessly through him, the force dissipating into empty space instead of transferring through his body.

I stumbled slightly as the expected resistance didn't materialize, using the brief moment to recover my balance. Wei Lin spun around immediately, his hand reaching out to grab my wrist, but I was already activating Verduring Step again. Green light swirled around me as I teleported to another seed position far across the chamber.

Getting back into a proper fighting stance, I activated the Hawk's Eye rune to analyze the situation more carefully. The enhanced perception ability let me see Wei Lin's spiritual energy flows, the readiness states of his various techniques, and maybe even predict his next moves.

To defeat Wei Lin in this fight, I would need to beat him using pure hand-to-hand combat and qi-based plant manipulation. If I tried to fight at long range with any energy attacks, he would just absorb them into his stalls and fire them back at me with modified properties.

Before I could decide on my approach, Wei Lin opened his mouth and screamed.

It wasn't just sound. The technique channeled spiritual energy through vocal cords enhanced by his cultivation base, creating a massive sound wave that tore through the air toward me. The crystalline walls amplified and focused the attack, turning the entire chamber into a resonating weapon.

I reacted immediately, using the lung resonator modification for the first time in actual combat. But since it was powered by blue sun energy, I couldn't use it offensively without risking Wei Lin absorbing the energy into his stalls. Instead, I used it defensively, releasing my own scream that created a barrier of harmonic frequencies.

The two techniques collided in the space between us with explosive results.

Sound waves crashed against each other, creating interference patterns that sent cracks racing through the crystal floor. The geometric patterns on the walls blazed with light as they struggled to contain the acoustic chaos. Fragments of crystal began raining from the ceiling, and the entire chamber shuddered under the assault of competing frequencies.

When the echoes finally faded, we stood facing each other across a battlefield marked by spider web cracks and scattered crystal debris. Both of us were breathing hard from the energy expenditure, but neither had gained a clear advantage.

I frowned, my mind racing through potential strategies and discarding them one by one. I had thought of myself as versatile, capable of adapting to different opponents and situations with my mix of cultivation techniques, runic abilities, and combat experience.

But Wei Lin was probably the most versatile opponent I had ever faced.

His marketplace cultivation method gave him access to multiple energy types, his demonic qi stall provided unpredictable shadow techniques, and his merchant background made him excellent at reading cost-benefit analyses in real time. He could counter almost anything I threw at him, absorb my attacks to fuel his own, and adapt his strategy based on whatever I revealed.

This battle was not going to be easy.

Okay, So does that mean that Wei Lin is actually okay now? That he's no longer as affected by the Demonic Qi's Influence within this realm, because it brings out their true selves and such?

Also, I liked Wei Lin before, but this chapter just cemented him as one of my favourites within this novel. He knows how the cultivation world works and he's doing all he can to make sure that he can keep up with Ke Yin, his best friend.

I also think he's going to use his Cultivation Method to help his partner, so that she can keep up with them, cultivation realm-wise. And honestly, even from a purely investment point of view, that's not even a bad investment, we saw that she is talented when it comes to herbs. It would be good to have an Alchemist or something, even at higher levels.
