Chapter 927: Misfortune?

After discussing matters related to the reanimated female corpse, Madam Magician affirmed Lumian and the others' current strategy. She said one major reason why previous gold coin holders failed to find a way to awaken Mr. Fool was that they were too eager to contact the target person, resulting in being locked onto by the Celestial Worthy and kicked out of the dream, or fully restricted, only able to make some contributions in accumulating intelligence.

At the end of the letter, Madam Magician told Lumian and the others that some gold coin holders could still enter this dream city, but they could not communicate with Mr. Fool or intervene in any events. However, they could act as human cameras, helping to collect information on certain occasions.

The content displayed on the ice crystal screen ended here. Lumian flicked his wrist, burning the letter, and turned to Ludwig. "The background of the reanimated female corpse."

Ludwig was staring longingly at a snack shop on the street, and reluctantly recounted the information he obtained from the corpse:

"Panatiya, a member of the Demoness Sect, nicknamed Nation of 'Despair Nightingale', was one of the perpetrators of the Great Smog of Backlund incident. She became the marionette of Antigonus, a great noble of the Tudor Empire, in a secret town on the way to the Nation of the Evernight. At that time, Antigonus was in a state of madness, mentally closer to the Celestial Worthy you guys talk about…"

"For the top level of the Marauder pathway, the Despair Nightingale is indeed equivalent to the Celestial Worthy's marionette." Lumian nodded slowly after carefully listening to Ludwig's statement.

His gaze turned to outside the car window, watching people coming and going at the entrance of the police station, and he said as he pondered, "Fooling, Grafting, dreams, reality—I don't fully understand these concepts, so I can only trust Madam Magician's explanation for now. What puzzles me is why the Celestial Worthy had to bring the Despair Nightingale marionette into the dream city, rather than using her virtual image here?

"It couldn't be just to give us Beyonder characteristics and special mirror world fragments, could it?"

"Indeed," Franca agreed, also finding the Celestial Worthy's choice in this matter incomprehensible.

Since Panatiya was the Celestial Worthy's marionette, her corresponding dream image should also easily become the Celestial Worthy's marionette again. In her subsequent tasks, the role she played did not require her to be a real Demoness-judging from Panatiya's reenacted script alone, an illusory Demoness belonging to the dream city could equally fulfill the corresponding responsibilities.

The Celestial Worthy chose a more complicated method over a simpler one, which had to imply hidden reasons.

These reasons might be crucial.

Anthony, sitting in the back, followed up with his analysis of the character's psychological state.

"If the description in the information and Madam Susie's reminder are correct, Mr. Fool's dream image is very cautious and careful. So sending a Demoness to approach him with reasonable excuses and in a gradual manner, cultivating feelings through daily, moderate interactions to dissolve unfamiliarity and wariness, might not be the best choice. Because Demonesses are too beautiful, it would instinctively make someone who considers themselves ordinary draw a line in their heart, feeling that it's not something they could obtain."

Lumian, Jenna, and Franca—the three Demonesses—all looked at Anthony simultaneously.

Anthony paused for two seconds before continuing, "If I were to arrange it, I would find a way to turn one of Zhou Mingrui's current female colleagues into a marionette. That colleague should preferably be very ordinary, not a Beyonder, and not particularly pretty, but still have her own charm from certain angles or expressions.

"After she becomes familiar with Zhou Mingrui, arrange for her to drink the Assassin potion, gradually and unobtrusively enhancing her charm, allowing love to develop slowly…"

Lumian's eyes flickered a few times, but he remained silent.

"You Spectators…" Franca sighed sincerely.

Indeed, better at writing scripts than the Celestial Worthy.

She had just seriously thought about it and felt that if it were her former self before transmigrating, she definitely wouldn't be able to resist!

"Then why did the Celestial Worthy have to bring His own Demoness marionette into the dream city, and even use the power of the Great Mother to give her new life?" Jenna repeated Lumian and Franca's previous confusion.

After a brief silence in the car, Lumian thoughtfully said, "Don't you think there are too many Demonesses appearing in this matter?"

"What do you mean?" Jenna vaguely guessed what Lumian wanted to say.

It was the dream symbolism he had been emphasizing several times every day recently.

Lumian slightly curled his lips.

"As a team coming to the dream to awaken Mr. Fool, the number of Demonesses among us is abnormally high, exceeding half. And the main opponent abandoned the simple approach, chose the complicated one, and even brought a Demoness marionette belonging to Himself here.

"The Major Arcana card holders have said that Mr. Fool has authority over fate, and that Celestial Worthy must have it too.

"The lucky coins ultimately gathered in our hands, bringing us to this dream city—doesn't this symbolize the choice of fate, symbolizing that it will be a Demoness who awakens Mr. Fool? Similarly, it will also be a Demoness who helps the Celestial Worthy achieve victory?

"I had previously felt that the pathways chosen by the lucky coins this time were too monotonous, and the appearance of the reanimated female corpse deepened my suspicion."

"Then why must it be a Demoness? And why must it be an external Demoness with real consciousness?" Jenna mused along this line of thought.

Perhaps figuring out this question would reveal how to awaken Mr. Fool.

Lumian chuckled.

"For now, I can only think of two reasons:

"First, a real Demoness symbolizes real calamity, and real calamity will bring great changes to the dream city. Where there's change, there's opportunity—maybe good, maybe bad. But this doesn't explain why there aren't as many Hunters, as Hunters are also symbols of calamity.

"Second, some crucial thing, a path leading to Mr. Fool's awakening, can only be completed by a Demoness of a not-low Sequence."

"It could be both reasons," Franca said, while worrying about the air conditioning costs and considering switching to ice blocks for cooling, but also concerned about being detected by Beyonders in the police force. She continued observing people entering and leaving the police station.

Thus, they observed and discussed intermittently until noon.

During this process, Lumian and the others saw Officer Deng and his fiancée Daly leave hand in hand to find a restaurant for lunch, and also saw key figures like Old Neil who bore the title of Interpol officer.

Their observations largely matched the descriptions in their information.

"Didn't see Mr. Star…" Franca withdrew her gaze, preparing to drive onto the road.

"He's probably out investigating the case at the mall's surveillance room," Lumian had noticed this information while scrolling through his phone earlier.

Franca didn't say more and drove the car to the new urban district, full of high-rise buildings and a modern atmosphere, parking opposite a building over a hundred meters tall.

Their next observation target, also a key suspect, Peng Deng, worked here.

Just as Franca parked the car, Lumian and the others saw the target approaching from a distance.

He was a young man with an unremarkable appearance, holding an iced coffee and looking down at his phone.

Every time Jenna thought he would bump into pedestrians or obstacles on the road, Peng Deng, without raising his head, would skillfully maneuver around them.

Almost simultaneously, Peng Deng's information flashed through Lumian and the others' minds:

"Peng Deng, 24 years old, from the same hometown as Zhou Mingrui, classmate from kindergarten, elementary school, and middle school, schoolmate in high school, currently an interior designer, living in Herun Community next to New City Garden.

"He has a girlfriend named Nie Zhen, living in the High-Tech Zone, planning to move in with Peng Deng after their current lease expires.

"Currently sharing rent with a foreign worker named Grisha, who has an eccentric personality, is paranoid, and has crude manners…"

Lumian carefully observed Peng Deng, who was wearing a light-colored shirt with sweat seeping through the back, not missing any of his movements or facial expression details.

Only after Peng Deng walked back into the building did Lumian withdraw his gaze and ask Anthony, "Did you notice anything?"

Anthony shook his head.

"That's normal. If it were that simple to discover problems, the Major Arcana card holders would have had results long ago," Lumian wasn't disappointed.

He said to all team members, "We're not sure if Peng Deng will go out in the afternoon. Let's go observe his girlfriend and his roommate for a while first. Tomorrow is the weekend, and there's a possibility of contacting Mr. Fool at the tutoring class in the afternoon. We need to quickly go through all the listed personnel that need observation."

Jenna and the others had no objections.

Franca tried to start the car but couldn't complete the ignition no matter what.

The rumbling sound failed to transform into a steady hum.

"Dammit! The car broke down…" Franca slapped the steering wheel, unable to hide her frustration.

At this moment, only one thought appeared in Lumian and Jenna's minds:

We'll have to pay for repairs…

Immediately after, Lumian furrowed his brow.

"Isn't this too coincidental?

"The car breaks down right after we observe Peng Deng…"

"Indeed, there were no signs of trouble before." Franca also began to find this suspicious.

Would approaching Peng Deng with ill intentions lead to misfortune?

But the Major Arcana card holders who had previously observed Peng Deng hadn't mentioned any similar situations.

"This is an anomaly, let's record it…" Lumian said to Anthony.

He opened the door and got out of the car, habitually wanting to check it himself to see if he could repair it. But after standing in the sun-scorched area, he remembered that he had no understanding of the structure of internal combustion engine cars. The only thing he could do was bang on the hood a few times, hoping that vibration and luck might somehow make the vehicle fix itself.

"I'll call the car rental company," Franca said, picking up her phone from the holder.

Just then, an enthusiastic voice came from the roadside.

"Hello, Li, and An, what's wrong?"

Lumian and Anthony, who had also gotten out of the car, looked towards the street and saw it was Stiano, the foreign exchange student they had met yesterday, who was suspected to be the dream image corresponding to a high-ranking member of the Church of Steam.

"The car broke down." Lumian pointed at the gray sedan.

Stiano, carrying a travel backpack, brightened up.

"Maybe I can help you fix it."

    (57) Chapter 941: Recognition

There was a creature that seemed to be a hybrid of an owl and a human, its eyes pure and round, with light brown pupils full of unabashed malice.

Anyone who met those eyes couldn't help but experience chaotic thoughts, intense anxiety, and deep fear.

The creature, half-owl, half-human, flapped its wings, emitting a foul stench as it swooped towards Jenna and Franca, who were asleep in bed.

Its mouth opened, releasing nearly tangible sound waves.

The sound waves struck the two Demonesses, passing through them, hitting the bedspread, and scattering in all directions.

There was no one on the bed anymore. The air conditioning display, the bedside table’s glass covering, and the wardrobe door inlaid with dark crystal items all quietly glowed with a gloomy light.

Behind the half-human, half-owl creature, Franca leaped up, wielding the almost invisible Ice Blade, and stabbed at the target with lightning speed.

The transparent, three-edged blade accurately pierced the creature's body, causing it to stiffen instantly, as if it had been frozen.

At the bedroom door, Jenna's figure appeared, holding a mirror in one hand, reflecting the enemy's movements in a start-stop manner.

With her other hand, she ignited a silent black flame, quickly spreading it across the mirror’s surface.

The half-human, half-owl creature was consumed by the eerie black flame from the inside out, but because of the influence of the Ice Blade, it couldn't even scream or wail.

Very quickly, the creature was burned to ashes.

"A type of spiritual being," Franca noted, knowing that the Demoness' Black Flame mainly targeted spiritual essence and life, making it hard to ignite physical entities.

She gently and nimbly landed from mid-air, as light as a feather without any weight.

Jenna spoke in a quick and low voice:

"This is Morna, the monster from Rozanne's painting, and Rozanne is fighting against intruders."

"Rozanne chose a radical approach?" Franca said without hesitation. "We need to go to Rozanne's room now, control her quickly, or we might get kicked out of the Dreamscape."

Jenna clearly considered this possibility as well. She nodded and said:

"You go to Rozanne's room, I'll go to that other spirit realm space. If necessary, I'll replace Rozanne and hold the barrier, preventing those intruders from advancing."

She felt that Rozanne might not be in her room; she could be near the slightly blurred barrier. Jenna also worried that without Rozanne's protection, the intruders could break through the defense, causing a disaster.

Franca didn't say much, nodding lightly as she slipped out to the other side of the curtains, opened the main bedroom window, and jumped straight down towards the 15th floor.

She didn't use the Ice Amulet, preferring to travel through the mirror world, as she suspected that Rozanne had already detected Jenna's previous investigation but hadn't yet identified who it was, possibly setting traps afterward.

Franca's body was as light as a feather, unaffected by the wind from its original trajectory, landing precisely on Rozanne's bedroom windowsill. She used a method of condensing thin layers of ice to pry open the window.

Franca didn't rush to climb in, instead taking advantage of the approaching dawn to quickly survey the situation inside.

No one was sleeping on the bed, and paintings with different subjects were hanging everywhere.

"Did she escape?" Franca took out a mirror from the Traveler's Bag.

She intended to take some risks, using mirrors inside and outside to create an illusion of herself, hoping to lure Rozanne into attacking.

In the spirit realm space covered by a freezing storm, Jenna's spirit body had just manifested, immediately looking toward the slightly blurred barrier in the deep darkness nearby.

    Rozanne wasn't there.

Morna and similar grotesque creatures were attacking the barrier, making it gradually thin, and the freezing storm showed signs of dissipating.

Jenna scanned the area, looking up and down, but still couldn't find Rozanne's figure.

She secretly breathed a sigh of relief and floated to the area where the creatures were fiercely attacking, conjuring dangerous and sinister black flames and shimmering ice spikes around her, sending them flying outward, dispersing many intruders.

After Jenna held out for fifteen minutes, the creatures retreated into the depths of the darkness, and the attack was completely repelled.

After a while, sunlight reached this area, and both the freezing storm and the floating spirits and illusory buildings faded and disappeared.

Jenna's spirit body also returned to her physical form.

    The sky had brightened.

Franca had returned, her expression serious as she spoke to Jenna:

"I couldn't find Rozanne; she either fled or left early."

"Could she be hiding in one of the paintings?" Jenna quickly suggested another possibility.

    Franca shook her head:

"I checked all the paintings, but none had a shadowy figure added to them. However, the sketch of her self-portrait is missing.

"Hmm, there's a painting of a bridge stretching from the edge of a cliff across a bottomless dark abyss, extending to another cliff with a dark forest on the other side.

"I suspect Rozanne entered the painting and fled into the dark forest through that bridge. I can't pursue her, and I have a strong sense of danger; that painting likely wasn't created by Rozanne herself."

Just as Jenna was about to say something, she suddenly realized:

"We haven't been kicked out of the Dreamscape yet!"

"And we haven't been restricted either," Franca, who had been paying attention to this, added.

    She pondered and said:

"Rozanne was polluted by the Fantasy Association deity, not controlled by the Celestial Worthy. The Fantasy Association deity might help the Celestial Worthy with some things, but they certainly have their own thoughts and plans and won't assist the Celestial Worthy in everything."

"Did he hope that we would continue to stay in the dreamscape when it was crucial to block the Celestial Worthy’s real body, and therefore hide this matter?"

"This is exactly what Lumian said: sometimes the standpoints of the Evil Gods and the Celestial Worthy align, and sometimes they don’t," Jenna nodded in agreement, immediately adding, "It’s also possible that Rozanne hasn’t been completely polluted yet, hasn’t fully fallen, and chose to handle our problems by herself without informing that Evil God."

"Struggling and resisting…" Franca sighed and then said, "Let’s wait a bit longer and see."

After more than an hour, two Demonesses saw Rozanne, wearing the standard administrative attire of the Intis Group, leave the fifth building as if she was just going to work normally. Last night's events seemed like just a dream.

However, Franca and Jenna were still not kicked out of the Dreamscape, nor were they subjected to any restrictions.

"She must have hidden herself in that painting with the bridge," Franca retracted her gaze and gently nodded, "Hmm, I’ll send Lumian a message, letting him know about last night’s events and the risk of us getting kicked out of the Dreamscape."

"Wouldn't that also involve him getting kicked out?" Jenna worried that contacting Lumian now might leave hidden dangers. Franca chuckled softly and said:

"Didn’t Stiano give us that little software? The shattered message box."

"I think WeChat messages are also considered messages, so they should be able to shatter and not leave any traces. Hmm, I’ll send the shattered message from here, and Lumian will receive it as a shattered message on his end."

"Even though it's uncertain whether the 'shattered message box' can really hide from the Celestial Worthy’s unconscious search, I think it’s worth trying. If it can achieve the effect we want, it’ll give us more leeway in certain matters."

Jenna pondered for a moment and said, "Alright."

Franca immediately composed a WeChat message, thoroughly explaining Rozanne’s probe, how she and Jenna dealt with it, and the subsequent developments. She finally reminded Lumian to delete the chat logs using the "shattered message box."

    ***

At the entrance of the tech building.

Lumian, who came here to register, stood in the lobby, casually reading the message sent by Franca.

Then, he turned towards the public restroom on the first floor, entered the men’s side, found a stall, and started using the the Bottle of Fiction.

Right after that, he brought his phone to his mouth and whispered:

"You should do more probing. Franca should also start work as soon as possible and make contact with Zhou Mingrui."

"We can’t completely pin our hopes on Rozanne’s struggle or the personal desires of the Fantasy Association. Maybe in half a day, a day, they’ll change their minds. You need to do as much probing as possible beforehand to accumulate information for the second and third time we enter the Dreamscape."

After sending the message, Lumian waited a few seconds before pulling up the "shattered message box" software, selecting the chat logs with Franca and Jenna, and clicking delete.

After doing that, he finished with the Bottle of Fiction, took the elevator to the 13th floor, where the security department of the Intis Group was located.

After completing the procedures, he was led to the office of the head of the security department.

This office was large, equivalent to a private gym, with a practice ring for boxing.

The head of the security department was a foreigner, with black hair and blue eyes, of medium build. His muscles didn’t appear overly developed but had a strong sense of power.

His name was Grimm. According to the Major Arcana cards, he was one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse who once followed Emperor Roselle and was highly trusted. He died early, not witnessing Roselle's great achievements. This is his Dreamscape form now.

"Have you trained in martial arts?" Grimm asked in a broken local accent.

    "Yes," Lumian sincerely nodded.

"Let’s have a fight," Grimm pointed to the boxing ring on the other side of the office.

Without changing into his security uniform, Lumian did not refuse and proactively entered the ring, waiting for Grimm to approach.

Grimm removed his formal attire, rolled up his sleeves, and approached Lumian.

Suddenly, he threw a punch, the sound of the wind whistling through the air.

Lumian appeared nonchalant but seemed to have anticipated the move, stepping aside to dodge the punch.

He launched himself forward, quickly closing the distance with Grimm, using a combination of elbows, fists, knees, and toes in a continuous barrage of attacks.

Grimm’s defensive stance was solid, not allowing Lumian’s quick but insufficiently powerful attacks to break through or land on him.

Bang! Bang! Bang! After several seconds of furious attacks, Lumian suddenly retreated, breathing heavily, and raised his hand in surrender:

    "I’m out of strength."

Of course, he couldn’t knock down the head of the department on his first day at work. It wasn’t a matter of work etiquette; he was concerned that it would reveal his supernatural abilities through combat.

    "Not bad," Grimm nodded.

He walked straight to his desk.

As he brushed past Lumian, he suddenly lowered his voice as if he didn’t want others in the office to hear:

"Send my regards to your mother."

Mother… Lumian's pupils suddenly dilated. Grimm then added in a low voice:

"I’ve recognized you, the revered son of God."

    (56) Chapter 940: Repaying the Loan

Franca's sentiments resonated deeply with Lumian and Jenna. They both understood very well.

In reality, they had encountered the "Pixie"—a high-ranking pathway of extraordinary individuals known as The Painter. However, they never expected that just by receiving a single picture through the information network, it would provoke such fear and divine terror.

"Yes," Jenna nodded. "We need to think more about how different pathways of Beyonders can manifest in the Dreamscape and achieve what can't be done in reality. We must plan ahead."

Although Dream City suppresses all extraordinary abilities to a list of level 7, its inherent characteristics and social dynamics still offer some extraordinary capabilities that could be useful.

Of course, Lumian and the others had preliminarily discussed the possible extraordinary abilities of the Demoness and Hunter pathways that could create miraculous effects in Dream City. However, they had not yet thoroughly considered other possibilities that might lead to changes.

    Their current conclusion is:

As representatives of disaster, the Hunter and Demoness pathways might exploit Dream City by "Relying on the omnipresent reflective surfaces to create Mirror Labyrinths at any time and place, casting different mirror magic" and "Using screens as a medium to access previously unreachable or non-existent surveillance worlds and alternate dimensions."

However, the more these abilities are exploited, the more they fall into the category of criminal behavior that must be severely punished, as Franca would say. These include "Using the network to seduce others and spread depravity," "Increasing the destructive power of Pyromaniac by using explosive natural gas," and "Quickly spreading diseases in densely populated environments," among others.

Besides these, there are countless other details and common uses.

After discussing this for a while, Lumian said to Jenna:

"Franca will be here for a while; she can observe Rozanne during the day and interact with her as a colleague."

"Have you joined the Intis Group?" Jenna, who had anticipated this, looked at Franca with joy and asked.

Franca responded with a calm smile, "Of course."

She explained how she prepared her plan, how she adjusted it upon seeing Miss Huang participate in the interview, and detailed the entire process from start to finish.

"When will you officially start working?" Jenna asked with concern.

Franca replied with a hint of pride:

"Give me three days to handle some trivial matters; Lumian has to report in tomorrow."

Miss Justice provided Franca with the identity of a 25-year-old intellectual who had been working for three years, with a career change after graduation.

Franca had initially been worried that the fabricated work experience on her resume might be a problem. But later, when she pretended to be a background investigator from a certain company and called, she was surprised to find that they really had a person named Luo Fu, who gave a review quite close to her actual situation.

This made her suspect that the company might be related to some hidden aspect of the Miss Justice or that before being expelled, the Miss Justice had used her Dream Weaving ability to create a usable identity that could be activated upon verification by a lucky person holding five gold coins. This identity could be gradually modified over time through a certain arduous and time-consuming method.

"Is there anything you need to prepare?" Jenna asked, but she really wanted to know if there was anything she could help with.

    Franca's expression collapsed slightly:

"I have to buy a dress, stockings, and high heels..."

She had been taking the Demoness potion for a long time, and at most, she had worn skirts before. She had never truly tried on a dress, let alone the other items.

    "Dress code," Lumian explained briefly.

Jenna understood Franca's discomfort and said with a slight smile:

"Have you forgotten the 'acting method'? Have you forgotten the roles you've played before?

"This is also a form of acting, not to digest the potion, but to approach the image of the Fool in Dream City, to secretly deal with the hidden followers of the Celestial Worthy and Evil Gods around him, and to thwart their plans.

    "Remember, you're just acting."

Franca had already made up her mind and was now mostly looking for more reasons to convince herself, so she was easily swayed by Jenna's "incitement" and relaxed her expression.

Seeing this, Jenna smiled and said:

"In that case, whatever you wear, I'll wear the same. If we all dress the same, there won't be any embarrassment or discomfort."

    Franca's eyes lit up, "Great!"

Since they had decided to endure the femininity of the outfits, a little extra beauty as a perk wouldn't be bad.

Lumian didn't join the conversation, letting Franca and Jenna chat, fearing that he might get roped into similar commitments.

He glanced at the time on his phone and said to the two Demonesses:

"Even though we didn't directly confront Roxane with the self-portrait, the fact that we erased the suspicious photo might alert Rozanne. If she realizes the photo is gone, she's likely to probe further, possibly even taking more aggressive actions. You both need to stay on guard."

"Yes, I thought of that just now," Franca and Jenna responded almost in unison.

Lumian waved his hand and turned to leave.

After he left, Franca plopped down on the sofa and relaxed with a smile at Jenna:

"Tomorrow, we'll go shopping for clothes. We've got the lottery winnings!"

Jenna visibly breathed a sigh of relief and suggested:

"Should we repay those small loans first?"

She had seen too many people in Jardin Botanique and Le Marché du Gentleman Market who ended up ruined by high-interest loans, dragging their families and loved ones down with them. So, ever since entering Dream City, she had been anxious about the small loans they had taken.

"I still want to save money to go to the Star Dream Provisions Store and rent those good items." Franca hesitated for two seconds and said, "Alright, first pay off the debt, this can also increase the limit, and when the critical moment comes, maybe it can be useful."

She had seen many cases in the past where people's lives were ruined by small loans.

But now, she was still an experienced and extraordinary person, knowing that after spending money to rent "Magic Mirror" Arrodes, she clearly understood that in the Dream City, money should also be considered a symbol, representing valuable resources. The subsequent exchange process that resulted in a "siege battle" only further confirmed this hypothesis.

From this perspective, always owing small loans is indeed a risky behavior. In an emergency, it might be necessary, but dragging it out for a long time and relying on them to survive is not a wise choice.

Jenna also sat down on the sofa, urging Franca to repay the loan immediately and transfer money to the teammates for debt repayment.

"Only twelve thousand left." Franca sighed.

Jenna changed the subject, and the two began chatting about their respective experiences during this period, sharing their daily life feelings.

In the end, Jenna couldn't help but ask again:

"So, how exactly can we wake up Mr. Fool?"

They had discussed this issue many times before but still had no clear direction. They could only continue observing and making contact, hoping to find clues and inspiration.

Franca shook her head and sighed:

"I don't know. For now, we've tried all the possible methods with the Major cards: anything that could remind him of the existence of extraordinary powers, like filming the complete transformation experience, hoping it would trigger memory recovery, but none of it worked. Moreover, it quickly led to being kicked out of the Dream."

Before, she didn't know, but now she was clear that the film was "Pirates 3."

"The Major cards haven't tried directly telling Zhou Mingrui the truth." Jenna recalled.

"Whether that would work or not is uncertain, but being quickly kicked out of the Dream is certain." Franca laughed at herself, "However, if there are still enough times to enter the Dream, it might be possible to isolate someone and have them try it once."

Late at night, the two Demonesses washed up and went to bed, each occupying a pillow.

They had discussed how to deal with Rozanne`s possible probing, so there wasn't much more to say. After a glance at each other, they tacitly pulled up their quilts and closed their eyes in the coolness brought by the air conditioning.

—Using ice to cool down is very likely to expose their extraordinary abilities to lurking threats.

Jenna once again traveled in spirit form, seeing many wandering spirits, vague and illusory buildings, and condensed storms, with a slightly blurred barrier.

She didn't immediately check Rozanne`s situation but maintained a dazed state, floating naturally, moving back and forth.

During this process, she saw Franca, who was also in a similar state.

Finally, Jenna's body drifted toward the nearby deep darkness, that slightly blurred barrier.

    There was no one there.

Rozanne wasn't there to resist the invading monsters!

Jenna's heart trembled, but she maintained her previous state, continuing to wander in spirit form.

After a while, her eyes naturally shifted upward, and she saw Rozanne.

Rozanne, dressed in a light yellow dress, was floating high up, silently watching her and Franca, no one knew for how long.

Jenna's spirit tensed in an instant, but relying on her acting skills, she didn't show any abnormality. Franca was equally natural.

After watching for a long time, Rozanne flew towards the strange creatures invading the barrier, blocking the enemy's attack, and repelling them one by one.

Franca and Jenna didn't relax, like background characters, faithfully repeating simple movements and irregular behaviors.

Suddenly, both of them simultaneously felt a sense of danger, instantly waking from sleep.

They smelled a nauseating stench and saw a pair of light brown eyes staring at them in the darkness from the ceiling.

In the dark, a pair of huge owl-like wings, covered with brown feathers, spread out.

    (55) Chapter 939: Virus

Jenna moved away from the window, sat down on the sofa, and temporarily put aside thoughts about Rozanne.

Today, if the interview went well, either Lumian or Franca would move in with her, and the team would split into pairs for their next actions - Ludwig would be a temporary addition.

Sometimes Jenna hoped it would be Lumian, other times she prayed it would be Franca. During this time in the Dream City, she often thought about spending more time with Franca, encouraging her more, being kinder to her, and showing her more attention. It made her feel needed, not alone.

Though Jenna hadn't explicitly discussed this with Lumian, she felt they shared an unspoken understanding, as their behaviors were often similar.

As she pondered, Jenna suddenly chuckled: "Actually, the best choice would be for both Lumian and Franca to be here."

That way, Franca wouldn't lack the feeling of being needed, Lumian could get more done, and Jenna wouldn't be left wondering what Lumian and Franca were talking about, what they were doing together, whether they were getting closer, or if their relationship was deepening.

These thoughts made her feel a bit bitter and uncomfortable, but they also helped her "Afflictions" potion digest a little more.

In terms of causing others pain, Jenna was progressing rapidly thanks to Ludwig’s presence. She would soon complete this part of her potion's digestion. But when it came to her own suffering, she still had a long way to go.

    She murmured softly to herself:

"Imagining and doubting hurts more than reality and eats away at the soul."

This was her summary of the role-playing rules. Compared to "Causing others pain" and "Enduring one's own pain", it was a minor change. If she were a wicked Demoness, she could target someone, outwardly being friendly but subtly causing the wife or girlfriend of her target to become suspicious, gradually uncomfortable, and eventually "start fights", leading both into the abyss of suffering.

Of course, Jenna also hoped that the relationship between Lumian and Franca would improve, that they could save each other in some way.

She would be happy for them, as long as she wasn't left out.

Jenna gradually calmed her thoughts, turned on her phone, and opened her photo album.

She looked at the self-portrait sketch Rozanne had sent yesterday, zoomed in, and selected the "Delete" button.

She felt that keeping a "Painter" in her phone was risky.

She hadn't deleted it yesterday because she wanted to see if anything would happen, but nothing did. However, she couldn't stay vigilant forever, keeping an eye on the portrait on her phone. She needed to use her phone to communicate with Lumian, Franca, Anthony, and the others!

After deleting the picture, Jenna played with her phone, scrolling through news, stories, funny videos, and shopping recommendations.

Time passed quickly, and Jenna stretched her back.

She felt like she could text Franca to ask about their situation, but first, she carefully checked her phone for any unusual apps or settings.

    Suddenly, Jenna's eyes froze.

She discovered that the self-portrait sketch of Rozanne was still in its original place in the album, looking lifelike, with a slight smile and lively eyes!

At that moment, Jenna felt uncertain:

Did I really delete it just now?

Am I being affected, seeing illusions?

Jenna quickly calmed down and deleted the picture again.

For the next while, she stared at the album, watching to see if Rozanne's self-portrait would reappear.

After a moment, the phone screen naturally dimmed, and Jenna hurriedly tapped it to bring it back to life.

The photo of Rozanne’s self-portrait reappeared, in its original place.

Jenna knew there was a problem, but she didn't know how to solve it. She was even afraid to go online to search for solutions.

Just then, she heard the doorbell ring.

Startled, Jenna quietly walked to the door and looked through the peephole.

    She saw Lumian and Franca.

Jenna breathed a sigh of relief and opened the door.

During the process, she remained somewhat cautious, until Lumian and Franca clearly appeared before her, with no warnings from her intuition.

"Just in time, there's something I need to tell you", Jenna said in a hushed voice.

Franca immediately showed a worried expression, while putting her keycard into her loose pants pocket as she entered the room, asking in a serious tone:

    "What is it?"

—The elevator in Dechuang Garden requires a keycard, and the landlord provided two cards, one for Jenna and one for Franca and the others.

After Lumian closed the door, creating a sense of privacy, Jenna explained everything about Rozanne clearly.

    She concluded:

"I remember the Purifier telling me that their colleagues once encountered an artist receiving psychological treatment. This artist always claimed that they would spirit travel every night, entering a space similar to the Spirit World but slightly different, where they fought against monsters trying to invade reality, protecting the peaceful square where they lived.

"This is very similar to what I see in my spirit form after sleeping."

"You're suggesting that Rozanne's protective actions might be just one side of a blessing's pollution?" Franca understood what Jenna was trying to convey.

    Jenna nodded:

"That's what I initially suspected, but after chatting with Rozanne and hearing her describe the monsters near my spirit form, I think she genuinely believes in protecting that space. This belief comes from Mr. Fool's subconscious understanding of and expectations for her."

"In other words, you think Rozanne's protective actions are not just driven by the power of a blessing but also by her own humanity and willpower, as part of Mr. Fool's subconscious construction of her character in opposition to the Evil God?" Lumian, thinking of himself, had a flicker in his eyes.

    Jenna nodded slightly:

"My current concern is whether our investigation might provoke Rozanne and cause her to be thoroughly corrupted, falling into the Abyss. This possibility is similar to Mr. Fool failing in a specific event. The failure might be minor, but if many small failures accumulate, it could tip the balance irreversibly."

    Lumian agreed:

"Our first priority now is to delete that photo."

"Yes, letting it stay on your phone is like carrying a ticking time bomb that could explode at any moment," Franca said as she took Jenna's phone and fiddled with it intently, but that self-portrait sketch of Rozanne stubbornly reappeared.

    This made Franca frown:

"Should we really use one of those 'total destruction' antivirus programs?"

Lumian glanced at the photo album on the phone's screen, ready to press on the image and enter the screen, as if to step into the world behind it, hoping to encounter the sketch and destroy it both physically and mystically.

At this moment, Franca stopped him:

"Don’t rush. Even if you could really enter the world inside the phone through the screen, it would be equivalent to directly confronting Rozanne’s self-portrait, which could easily alert her and provoke a reaction."

As she said this, Franca smiled:

"Haven't you added that Stiano on WeChat? If he’s a high-ranking figure in the Church of Steam and his WeChat nickname includes the key term 'information technology', and he's also deeply educated, then maybe he knows how to delete this type of mystical virus."

"I'll ask him," Lumian said, nodding thoughtfully.

Jenna sent him the self-portrait photo of Rozanne on WeChat.

Afterward, he sent a message to Stiano: "Could you help me with something? My phone got a strange virus."

In just a few seconds, Stiano, whose nickname was "Power Source and Information Technology", replied:

    "Send me a screenshot."

"Quick response... does that mean he's really interested in this kind of thing?" Franca murmured.

Lumian opened the photo and asked Franca to help him take a screenshot, which he then sent to Stiano:

"It’s this picture. No matter what I do, it won’t delete. It learned how to reappear by itself."

After a while, "Power Source and Information Technology" sent a compressed file:

"Inside, there's a small program. Use it to target the picture, and then delete it."

Is there really a solution? Franca and Jenna both naturally had this thought. Following the instructions, Lumian decompressed the file, releasing a small program called "Information Fragmentation Box."

He opened the small program, targeted Rozanne's self-portrait sketch with it, and clicked the "Delete" button.

Immediately after, Lumian exited the small program, locked the phone for two seconds, and then unlocked it again.

He quickly noticed that the photo had disappeared from the album and did not reappear.

After testing it several times, Lumian sent the compressed file to Jenna.

Jenna was also able to successfully delete the self-portrait sketch without it sneaking back into her gallery.

"That’s really something", Franca said, looking at the "Power Source and Information Technology" on Lumian's WeChat, genuinely impressed.

Lumian then used a voice-to-text method to thank Stiano.

"Power Source and Information Technology" replied:

"This type of virus is worth studying. If you encounter a similar issue again, feel free to contact me."

Encounter similar issues again? Lumian thought, sending a nodding emoticon in response.

Only then did Jenna relax. Suddenly, Franca let out a sigh:

"In modern society, no, in the Dream City, those with extraordinary abilities are becoming more terrifying and harder to guard against.

"From Rozanne’s case, we can see that if an artist has supernatural powers, the corresponding photograph of the painting will also carry certain peculiarities. If this were to spread through the internet, being seen and downloaded by thousands or millions, it would be terrifying...

"Before this, the monitoring world was also something we couldn't come across in our reality."

Before Lumian and Jenna could respond, Franca had another sudden thought:

"Computer viruses, phone viruses are still viruses, could they be controlled by a Demoness?

"Maybe not... but those who follow the Mystery Pryer path at a high level could certainly control them."

Stiano is not God of Steam and Machinery? He was one of the earliest founders of the Moses Ascetic Order. Maybe, of course, Stiano changed the path from Hermit to Paragon somewhere before sequence 1 (adjacent paths) and in fact he became the God of Steam (since he also read the Second Blasphemy Slate)... But it’s unlikely

Stiano is well with modern technologies. So he from White Tower. From high sequence we know Edwina, Lucca and God of knowledge and wisdom. And Stian (who found order) can't be a God, because Herabergen lived in the Second Epoch. Maybe that a real coincidence that they have the same names.

"His" true name is reveled to be Stiano, as "He" named "Himself" inside The Fool's dream. - from wiki, so it`s God of Steam!. Either his name is the same as the founder of the Moses Order, or he actually changed paths.

          P.S.
According to the author's interview, the birth of the God of Steam and Machinery is related to the Moses Ascetic Order. Clues related to the God of Steam and Machinery will be relatively important in Book 2.

He most likely hopped from sequence 2 of the Hermit pathway to sequence 1 of Paragon, later claiming the position of sequence 0. Or, perhaps, he even was sequence 1 of the Hermit pathway, but the existence of the Hidden Sage is a roadblock he had to work around. Otherwise it's hard to explain why
            1) He has some innate problem that makes him weaker then the other gods.
            2) There is no mention of a great inventor/innovator that would rival Roselle. So he didn't have any anchors associated with the Paragon pathway.

Probably, "Steam" himself raised the Hidden Sage in order to absorb him without ritual, so some of his powers and authority were constantly given specifically to the Sage, interfering with both digestion and strengthening of control. This is likely due to the fact that the Hermit's rttual is very dangerous or long, so that a creature with the need for anchors could not perform it without serious risks.

It's exactly the same in our world. If you are able to feel the picture energetically, then you are able to become infected with the artist’s ideas and establish some kind of contact. But our world is divided into many AREAS OF INFLUENCE, so each person has his own factional inclinations. Be vigilant and wise, do not try to study what you cannot protect yourself from. Paragon Pathway is about technologies, machines, "hardware", civilazation, development of civilazation.

Hermit Pathway is about magic, spells, mysteries, information, observing, a flow of information.

These two pathways meets at informational technologies.

By learning electricity production and making IT, Steam God Stiano is going to enhance his state even more, IT will help him to own major part of the Hermit Pathway authority — information.
