This is an alternate history. Decades after the fall of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the world is still in chaos, although there is hope for reunification.

Of poor background, Jiang Zhe, styled Suiyun, has finally, after ten years of hard work, passed the imperial examinations and become a scholar within Hanlin Academy. Unwittingly, he becomes involved in the succession dispute of the Great Yong Dynasty. He faces conspiracies and machinations and countless battles of strength and wits. Intending to avoid court politics, he ultimately has no choice but to become involved. With no alternative, Jiang Zhe can only follow the crowd, joining the chaotic political turmoil. In this conniving world, he uses his intelligence and knowledge to provide for himself and his companions a stable environment to survive.

Watch nations fall, great men rise, and supreme martial artists kneel before the quiet whispers of a frail, unassuming scholar. Collapse

    Liked it a lot.

It's the kind of novel where you can feel the amount of thought and planning put into it. The grandmaster strategist really deserves his title, and all the while the rest of the world is highly competent too. Every win is hard-fought but also decided before the fighting starts. And the characters are likeable.

Admittedly, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. If you wonder what are the possible negatives, then one may for you be how it tries to be realistic in the historical setting. so things like 'his physiognomy suggests he will have bad luck', alongside other superstitions and outdated views will occur.
The fights are also poorly written. The description are overly poetic.
You may find poems boring. I have no understanding of chinese references and they lost all flavour in translation.

Still, in the end all those detriments are quite meaningless.

Oh, and details matter. Take it slow.

At one moment you are immersed in a story, at another you are dying of boredom. A very incomprehensible novel. To be honest, it's hard for me to read this work. It's just that we were immediately given the developed character of the main character (and I just don't like this type). TOO MANY NAMES, MY BRAIN BROKEN! I've been f#cking reading Chinese novels for 3 years now. In short, if you are a pervert historian, then this novel is for you! And I will give you a 3.5 / 5 rating.

5/5 Definitely top of top in all factors
Unlike other novels that has a lot of "fluff" that you can skim or skip chapters and still understand, this novel is the opposite of that. At the start I thought it was full of "info dump," but then I just realize that I was just used to "junk(food) novel" where I can skim without worry. But, this is a full meal course where you can't skim or skip or you'll feel that you are suddenly lost about the story. Every words and sentences are important to understand the story, no jargon and bs here.

The early chapters confused me a lot, but after 20 chapters I couldn't stop reading.

a little sad because I can't read the ending because the last 18 chapters don't exist.
