    (1) Rattan baskets are usually woven with strips of wood, meaning there are a lot of gaps for water to flow out from.

    Just use the word 'Sieve', like you're supposed to as a translator and stop complicating things:

        I wasn't in the best of moods then.
        Rattan is genuinely a material, and objects made of it have this distinct look and have holes in them, which is why it was used here.
        I was more pissed off they used less commonly used word just to explain it afterwards instead of using words that need no explaining

            I was foolish then and got fed up with tl notes that they could honestly get around without. When translating, it's a recurring problem to encounter a set expression. As a bilingual reader who read a bunch of translated stuff, I got myself an opinion that its better to replace the whole phrase to an equivalent one instead of translating it word for word and then explaining it in the note at the end of a chapter, where it's no longer needed as much.
            I shouldn't have lashed out at some rattan, that's true.
