**Chapter 395 – Flowing Fire Rises from the Abyss**

Though Lanlin Province was located in a remote region, its natural landscapes were exceedingly strange.

Towering stone pillar peaks floated in midair, standing like a thousand needles piercing the heavens.

Beneath the suspended mountains lay a deep valley — a fearsome forbidden zone composed entirely of black ash. Even while flying tens of thousands of zhang above, Li Fan could still sense the terrifying aura emanating from below.

Standing aboard the *Dust-Crossing Boat*, Huangfu Song gazed down at the scene beneath them, his expression slightly changing. “What a desolate backwater this place is.”

“Compared to this cursed land, even the Ten-Thousand-Mile Flameblaze Expanse we saw earlier doesn’t seem so perilous.”

Hearing this, Li Fan also turned to look toward the depths of the valley.

Within the ocean of pitch-black ash, faint, still-burning dark flames could be seen flickering here and there.

Occasionally, a gust of wind swept by, lifting threads of black ash from the sea below, spinning and rising until they collided against the *Dust-Crossing Boat*.

The weightless ashes struck the protective barrier, yet at the instant of contact, the vessel shuddered violently.

It was as if a tremendous impact had struck — a small hole appeared in the crimson light barrier, sending ripples spreading outward in all directions.

Even though only a fraction of his consciousness was controlling his body, Li Fan was still startled by what he saw.

He couldn’t help but ask, “What in the world are these black ashes?”

Huangfu Song first maneuvered the *Dust-Crossing Boat* higher, evading the rising ash from the valley below, before explaining: “Those are the remnants left after the *Ashen Extinction Flame* burns. All traces of life are annihilated — what remains is only the lingering power of annihilation.”

“It’s an evil thing. Best to stay as far from it as possible.”

Before his words had even faded, the *Dust-Crossing Boat* accelerated, speeding toward the central region of Lanlin Province.

Gazing down at the endless abyss of pitch-black annihilation beneath them, Huangfu Song sighed. “Fortunately, tens of thousands of mountain peaks were used to form a grand formation, sealing the *Ashen Extinction Flame* within Lanlin Province. Otherwise, the neighboring regions would likely have shared the same fate.”

“*Ashen Extinction Flame*?” The aura of the black ash made the already-ailing Li Fan feel even more unwell. Frowning, he pondered silently.

    That name sounded familiar…

Within his sea of consciousness, the *Dao Integration Stone* flickered faintly. A moment later, fragments of memory surfaced — lines he had once read.

“Cangwu Province, land of four rivers and twenty-eight mountains.

One year, one month, one night — it vanished without a trace, leaving behind only a bottomless abyss.

The strange treasure of the earth, *Cangwu Landscape Diagram*, was born from it.”

“Nine years after the disappearance of Cangwu’s mountains and rivers, black, liquid-like flames erupted from the depths of the abyss.

The vicious blaze raged unchecked and could not be extinguished. It was called the *Ashen Extinction Flame*.”

Li Fan then asked, “Is this the same black flame that came from the Abyss of Cangwu?”

Huangfu Song paused, narrowing his eyes as if searching his memory.

After a long while, he nodded. “Indeed. After the *Ashen Extinction Flame* emerged from the Cangwu Abyss, it spread outward.

Several provinces were devastated before it was finally contained near Lanlin Province.”

    Li Fan was shocked.

Cangwu lay in the southwest corner of the Xuanhuang Realm, while Lanlin was nearly due south.

The scale of the *Ashen Extinction Flame’s* destruction was truly vast.

“You need not worry, little friend,” Huangfu Song said with a chuckle. “Since that incident, the *Ashen Extinction Flame* has never reappeared.

As for what caused that world-ending calamity — it remains an unsolved mystery.

At first, the Alliance suspected the work of the Five Elders Assembly, but after investigation, they denied it.

That was true power of heaven and earth itself — something beyond the reach of cultivators.”

As they conversed, Huangfu Song shared many such stories with Li Fan.

Half a day later, they reached their destination.

“Before inspecting the *Spirit-Locking Formation*, we should first visit the steward of Lanlin Province.

This senior was once a cultivator of our Tianyu Province and has looked after me many times in the past. It wouldn’t do to neglect propriety now.”

He pointed toward a needle-like mountain piercing the clouds ahead.

At once, Li Fan guessed who he meant.

“You mean Senior Guan Xingxiu, former Commander of the Tianyu Province Garrison Institute?”

Huangfu Song smiled and nodded. He then stowed away the *Dust-Crossing Boat* and led the group flying toward a small courtyard atop the mountain.

“Old acquaintances still acting so formal? Come in already — I won’t bother greeting you in person!”

From afar, a voice drifted toward them.

“In that case, thank you, Senior!” Huangfu Song replied cheerfully.

He signaled the other cultivators to wait outside and entered the courtyard with Li Fan.

The courtyard was simple — a lone pine tree stood tall at its center.

Beneath it, a middle-aged cultivator reclined lazily on a long chair, rocking gently back and forth.

He held a palm fan, flicking it leisurely from time to time.

“It’s been a while, Senior. Your demeanor remains as graceful as ever,” Huangfu Song greeted with a bow.

Li Fan followed suit. “Greetings, Senior Guan.”

“So you’re Li Fan, eh? I’ve heard of you.” Guan Xingxiu gave Li Fan a measuring look, a faintly amused expression on his face. “That drive of yours… it surpasses mine.”

Li Fan’s heart tightened slightly. He gave a reserved smile. “Heh… Senior flatters me.”

Huangfu Song quickly added, “Fellow Daoist Li may be determined, but he’s still no match for you, Senior. Among Tianyu cultivators, who hasn’t heard of—”

Before he could finish, Guan Xingxiu interrupted.

“Boy, a true man doesn’t boast of past glories. I’ve fallen far from those days, yet you come here to trumpet my old deeds? What are you scheming at?” His gaze swept over Huangfu Song, displeasure flashing in his eyes.

Caught off guard by his rebuke, Huangfu Song forced a dry laugh. “Senior, you know me better than that.

Even if I had the guts, I wouldn’t dare cross you.”

Guan Xingxiu snorted coldly, but his expression soon softened.

“You’re a dull one, you know that?”

“Still, it’s been long since I’ve seen any old faces. You coming to visit is already commendable.”

“I understand what you’re after — go ahead and do as you must.

With me here, this little patch of Lanlin Province won’t be overturned by anyone.”

As he spoke, Guan Xingxiu flicked his fan. A golden miniature sword appeared and flew into Huangfu Song’s hand.

“It’s been too long since I’ve shown my face. Let’s see if anyone dares test whether my sword is still sharp.”

Overjoyed, Huangfu Song bowed deeply. “Many thanks, Senior!”

“Oh, and one more thing…” He was about to speak further when Guan Xingxiu waved him off.

“I’ve already considered Fellow Ji’s proposal carefully. But as a Soul Formation cultivator, I’d be of little use there.

Besides, our former commander has passed away, and the position of Grand Marshal has long been settled.

I’ve no intention of contesting anything anymore.”

    “Go on, both of you.”

With a gentle wave of his fan, a breeze swept through the courtyard — and in the next instant, Li Fan and Huangfu Song found themselves outside the gate.
