I managed to catch up to the weekly releases before taking a break for a few months. I haven't dropped it; I’m just letting the chapters accumulate.

Dragon Cannon is a powerhouse on the Qidian platform, consistently ranking among the top 10 or 20 bestsellers. Despite its massive popularity, it occupies a specific niche: industrialization in a fantasy world, or the clash of technology against magic and mysticism—much like Release that Witch or GATE.

The Premise and Pace
The first 100 chapters or so read like a standard Xianxia. You’ll find the usual tropes: sects, cultivation, internal rivalries, and grueling training arcs. This lengthy introduction serves a purpose, however; it justifies why the protagonist eventually abandons the traditional path of a cultivator to ignite an industrial and technological revolution.

The heart of the story lies in world-building and the socio-political ramifications of introducing technology to a mystical world. There is plenty of dialogue and political maneuvering. While technology is used in combat, don't go in expecting non-stop action. If you’re looking for explosions and gunfights in every chapter, you’ll be disappointed. This novel demands patience and attention to detail, focusing on how a world built on magic adapts to a scientific shift.

The Flaws
The work isn't without its issues. My biggest gripe is with that 100-chapter introduction. It feels like the author forced the protagonist to suffer to justify his future motivations, but the execution feels off. From the start, we see that the MC is exceptionally intelligent, precocious, and even somewhat "inhumane"—he doesn't shy away from violence or carnage. He isn't necessarily cruel, but he’s the type of person who would preemptively stab an enemy at the first sign of danger.

It feels inconsistent, then, when this cold, calculating lead becomes depressed over setbacks that would only affect a normal child. He isn't a normal child, so the sudden shift in personality feels jarring. Fortunately, this issue is mostly confined to the beginning.

Another flaw is the author's attempt at "tension-breaking" comedy. Occasionally, jokes are inserted into high-stakes moments where they simply don't belong. It often misses the mark and becomes more irritating than funny. Like the protagonist's personality shift, this is more prevalent in the early chapters, which felt like a "testing ground" for the author's ideas—both good and bad.

Final Verdict
If you enjoy the theme of "Science vs. Magic," Dragon Cannon is definitely worth your time. You’ll have to push through about 100 chapters to get to the true meat of the story, but even that slow start is well-written. It’s a rewarding read for those who appreciate deep world-building over simple brawls.
