    I wonder if licking it in his youth is how he gained the ability to see the shadow in the first place. Its an ability he wouldn't have noticed till something supernatural actually appeared in front of him.

    Or perhaps simply interacting with a supernatural artifact naturally allows people to see the shadows. Which might explain why people who see shadows are being hunted down. They are after the artifacts and then silence the people involved.
