    Under extreme pressure, water changes from a liquid to a solid state... and the solid state of water is ice. Only it can't become ordinary ice here, since it can't expand to form its molecular structure due to the pressure. So, it can only become a solid with a denser crystal lattice — a kind of crystal comparable to diamond in hardness. That is what we're looking at.

    Even in the deepest parts of the ocean, like the Mariana Trench, the pressure is extremely high, over a thousand times what we feel at sea level. But surprisingly, that pressure doesn’t freeze the water. Instead, it actually makes it a bit harder for water to turn into ice, so it stays liquid even below 0°C.

    However, if the pressure becomes far greater, much more than what exists anywhere in Earth’s oceans, water can eventually turn solid again. But this isn’t the normal ice we know. It becomes a special kind of ice, called high-pressure ice, which forms deep inside planets or icy moons. This ice is tightly packed, much denser than regular ice, and quite hard, though still not as hard as diamond. So, while Earth’s oceans can never reach those conditions, they exist naturally in the extreme depths of other worlds.
