      Being in shadow step form makes him more vulnerable as he can't rely on his marble shell. And shadows that survive in the shadow realm, will most likely be able to notice that form and hit him

      First let's note a few things.
      The real definition of darkness and shadow ( outside of fiction) and this books take on It ( fiction).

      In the real world darkness is the absence of light. Shadow is the darkness produced by the shielding of light by an object.
      In Shadow Slave the elements have essences. Light, Dark and Shadow. Darkness here is an different was esscence from Shadow and has a natural advantage to shadow. In true darkness there's no light to cause a shadow.

          It's white when there's light ( light)
          It's black when there's no light (shadow)
          Paint the paper in black color it is black but isn't shadow (Darkness)

      Doesn't it actually make sense? They are fundamentally different even in real life. Maybe Shadow element is weak to True Darkness because shadow cannot exist if the surrounding is already dark in the first place— it requires Light to exist. Shadow element can be attributed to souls and the likes, such as Death. While True Darkness seems to have better destructive force and tangible effect.

      Maybe these are the possible source of the elements which makes them different to each other: Shadow is Death, Soul, etc; while Light can be Hope/Longing, Healing, etc; Fire is Anger, Ferocity, War; while Darkness is Devouring, Corruption or the likes. Maybe.

      You could say Light and Shadows were created by Gods while Darkness was the remain of a God level criature, its powers are at the same level but Darkness nature make it win against Shadows but it loses against Light
