      I was thinking Nephis was Torment, her flames burn and cause pain, and maybe because she carries hope, and has failed to find salvation, it has tormented those who once believed in her? Im unsure but that was where I was thinking

    most terrifying thing about him, though, is that his madness spreads like a disease

    So sunny will use the crown he got to block the mind attacks but be affected by the wrath so he can kill him.

    I don't think these abominations are cohort members from future. If these creatures are giving headache to Transcendent humans (there must be many in a place where people are ageless) they must be atleast a titan if fallen or a demon or above if corrupted and the cohort members other than neph, sunny and mordret can't have multiple soul cores and even these three can't transcend within the nightmare. Hence, the chances of them being same are really slim unless some new mystery is unravelled.

      To be fair, they did just talk about how they used to transcend before the spell. I don't think it was limited to Riverborn, since the Azure serpent was once an outsider who became supreme. With the way it seems like time works in the nightmare, it could very well be that the cohort, either before or after being corrupted, fall into the system of slow but natural ascension. Once corrupted, I would assume they could all eventually gain the ability to form multiple cores.
      I'm thinking Sunny has spent decades, if not centuries in the nightmare, trying to defeat the Defilement by sending his corrupted self up river, so that he can float down it back into his initial form. Each time giving himself a hint or help to beat the final boss. I can only imagine how fate would be effected by something like that.

    I find the theories suggested by others in the comments very good, but I had another thought as well that doen't fit in with these narratives.

    It is just something I noticed, but it doesn't seem like a coincidence to me that there are 6 plagues, and the Estuary Key is weaved around 6 cores.

    Soul Stealer is Mordret as taking reflection of who he kills.
    Effie is the Devouring Beast a gluttonous woman.
    Torment is Cassie I think torturing people through mind.
    Undying Slaughter is Jet counties killing for survival.
    The Dread Lord is Kai bro literally can control people's through word and charm .
    The Mad Prince is Sunny bro lost his mind and made it worse by shodow dance.

      couldn't Nephis be the first seeker? No one knows what happened to him/her and Nephis is immune to corruption. I think that might fit the theme

    For some reason, it seems to me that these Heralds of the Estuary are so similar to the cohort of those who came into the nightmare along with Sunny.

    At least all the special features are the same.

    The Mad Prince, one in one Sunny, who has gone crazy because of his shadow dancing, which is a very dangerous and chaotic style, the Prince has a crown, just like Sunny.

    Soul Stealer is Mordred.

    Undying Slaughter, very similar to Jet, since she, too, almost always has to kill someone.

    Devouring Beast reminds me of the ever-hungry Effie.

    I can’t say much about the others, but the Mad Prince is the same as Sunny.

    And now I have a theory that when Sunny fell into a nightmare, he could not survive it, he became corrupted, but when he floated into the past, the corruption disappeared and he forgot everything else. He himself created that Key of Estuary, but he simply doesn’t remember it. My theory is also confirmed by the fact that Sunny himself said that Sin of Solace had changed a lot, although this shouldn't have happened, and the raft in which Sunny found herself was completely covered in one word, as if some madman had scrawled it.

    Although I could be wrong, since the Soul Stealer may turn out to be that Skinwalker from the desert, and the other Six Plagues are the same monsters, similar to Skinwalker.
