Chapter 1947: Convincing Rex of a Possible Threat |
It was a valid question.
Considering that the evaluation was tied directly to the Cavity, if it was in any kind of peril, High Lord Rashal would be done for good. He would gain a bad evaluation from the evaluator, and the Cavity would be handed to someone else.
And that’s precisely what High Lord Ursa wanted.
But there’s a problem with that.
"Yes, attacking the Cavity would seal High Lord Rashal’s fate—but it’s not that easy to deal damage to it," Rex answered, giving Davina a piece of his mind. "It’s guarded by countless Pale Defenders, and it is also very close to Larta City. If it was attacked, the responders would arrive quickly, making it a bad target to attack.
"Assuming that there’s even someone from the God Realm who could even enter it," He added.
It was true that Rex arrived in the God Realm through the Cavity.
But that’s because he’s entering from the Spirit Realm, which could access the Cavity directly. For those who are from the God Realm—entering the Cavity would be impossible without permission. It was the reason why it was hard for Rex to find his way back to the Cavity.
He needed to enter through a back channel, and even that was lucky for him.
Other than a place to harvest divine strands, it’s also a good buffering zone.
Pale Defenders could act as a good guardian to check on the visitors.
It would be really difficult for anyone from the lower realms to overwhelm the Pale Defenders, even if they are a one-in-a-billion genius. Rex was one of the few who could go through the Pale Defenders, but even then, he couldn’t escape the Enforcers.
And not to mention, there are only a few destinations a visitor could go within the Cavity.
Because of those things, the Cavity was a perfect place for a buffer zone.
Rex also has another guess, which was to prevent the visitors from the lower realm from being food.
Many Demigods and even Gods would certainly want to use mortals as food with unsatiated eagerness. But once a mortal set foot on the path to the Cavity, the situation changed dramatically. Very few dared to snatch a visitor from that road, as that would also mean offending the Overseer of Realms.
Nobody wanted that. Not even Gods.
"Still, there’s no harm in us checking whether the Cavity was compromised."
"Davina... I am busy dealing with what’s right in front of my eyes—and you’re asking me go check on the Cavity when there’s a big chance to find nothing?"
"You’re being biased here—Rex," Davina smacked her lips in displeasure. "You saw yourself in High Lord Rashal, and believed that the intel he gave put us two steps further than the enemy, when in reality, there’s a chance we’re playing on their palms."
"I need to make sure the Demigods here didn’t escape. I can’t check the Cavity."
"Alexander got this. He knew—that all the enemy Demigods need to die to call this a great success for the High Lord. Let’s investigate the Cavity. If you really can’t or don’t want to, then let me go check. I can do it myself."
"Absolutely not. Do you forget where we are?"
As much as Rex wanted to entertain Davina’s suspicion, he won’t let her go on her own.
It’s too dangerous to traverse the God Realm alone.
Not to mention, right now, his mind was split between helping Alexander secure the enemy Demigods completely and helping Lilliana help the puppets bearing the heresy mark that he controls to kill mortals, which he needed to complete the Sudden Quest.
He can’t split his attention to check the Cavity.
Perhaps later once he finished securing the water dome.
"What are you going to do if the Cavity was attacked? How do you think the High Lord would react?"
"I know that it’s going to be bad, but let’s not pretend that it’s unlikely."
Davina bit her lower lip as she watched Rex walk away, preparing to continue what he was doing.
She wanted to convince him, but right now, she didn’t know what to say.
After all, this was all based on her hunch; as important as it was during battle, one can’t entirely depend on decisions based on a hunch, so she understood why Rex was acting like this. "But still... He could have at least contacted Zev or someone. I’m sure he has his own ways."
"I heard that," Rex said without looking back. "Fine, I’ll ask Alexander."
Right now, it was one against one.
Rex didn’t want to force Davina to stand down and resent him for it, so he decided to add another into the mix. As long as there’s another one who would side with him, then it is going to be two against one. Davina would have no other choice but to accept to stand down then.
He touched his earpiece and connected with Alexander inside.
"High Millinar Alexander, can you hear me?"
’It’s not really a good time, but say what you needed to say.’
"Just asking whether there’s a chance High Lord Ursa is also attacking the Cavity."
’Attacking the Cavity? He didn’t have access to the Cavity. Only High Lord Rashal has direct access. It meant all beings, be it mortals, Demigods, or Gods, would be detected. Only those who are confirmed by the High Lord would be able to enter, other than the mortals, which the Pale Defenders would deal with.’
"See?" Rex looked at Davina again. "He also said it’s impossible. Are you satisfied?"
"No," Davina shook her head. "Ask him if he can handle the enemy forces alone."
"Are you serious?"
"Yes!"
Rex tapped on his earpiece again and asked, "How’s it going there? Can you deal with it on your own?"
’It’s under control. Manvac and his soldiers are weakened and in shambles after the initial attack. But make preparations if you can in case he has a method to preserve his life. I’ve cornered him like this in the past, and he survived all instances.’
"Alexander said he wanted me to stay," Rex informed what Alexander said to Davina. "Anything else?"
Davina’s lips trembled, as if she wanted to say more but couldn’t find anything to say.
Eventually, she walked aside, "Fine. Do what you needed to do first."
Once he got his time back, Rex immediately went down to one knee again—and charged his hand with the Law of Inevitability. He could use the Law of Misdirection to cover the entire water dome, making sure that nobody could escape.
But that would be relying on his power.
Against someone like Manvac who could go toe-to-toe with Alexander, his own power alone wouldn’t be even remotely close to enough. Fortunately, he already has something to go with. Rather than create a barrier using his own power, he could pour the Law of Inevitability into the water dome and turn its own structure even stronger.
It would make the already strong water dome stronger.
Manvac would need time to break the water dome again.
And with Rex’s additional power, he might not be able to break it at all.
System, all I need to do is pour the Law of Inevitability power into the ground?
Rex nodded and poured his Law of Inevitability into the ground.
He kept charging and charging it into a single particular spot on the ground, hoping that he could mimic what Manvac did with his Major Law. Nearly an hour bled away before the process finally came to an end, leaving the patch of earth seething with so much energy that a visible haze rose from it—like heat off sun-scorched stone.
As the System said, it was incredibly hard to complete the process.
For the first time in quite a while, Rex actually felt tired.
Not to mention, he even needed to summon the Red Dawn of Kaiser to pour even more of the law.
Rex rose to his feet and panted heavily, wiping the sweat on his brows as he stared at the path.
"Finally..." He mumbled inwardly. "Just one alone took damn long to make."
...
Description: A fixed scar upon the world where a Law once manifested, marked by the seething haze of power. It holds not the full edict, but a splinter of its authority; enough to store Law power in stasis or amplify any Law-channeled power passing through it as long as it’s the same Law.
...
"Huh..." Rex read through the description and nodded. "So, that’s what this really was."
His focus returned to the Crux of Law that Manvac made, and then he compared it to his.
As expected, his was far inferior.
Not because his Law of Inevitability is weaker than the Major Law of Life Force from how the haze was less intense, though it was, but because he has no experience in using this. And perhaps the one Manvac made took longer, which was the reason behind the gap.
After all, while waiting for the Red Skull Elite Force to take the bait on the central continent, Manvac could’ve already started making the Crux of Law.
Rex looked at the other sides and found four more Crux of Law.
"How in the world did he make five of them?" The words slipped out—before he could stop them. A single patch had left him drained, and his stamina, across everything, including his Law power, was nothing short of exceptional. Yet here he stood, barely managing one. "I can use only one to strengthen the water dome, but two would be the safer bet."
Deciding that two would be better, Rex continued.
He was debating whether to use only one when he realized that the battle was going to be over soon.
But when he asked Alexander, he realized that the battle was still raging.
A battle between Demigods of equal strength was a slow, grinding affair—neither side gaining ground quickly, neither side falling fast. Rex had no reason to rush. The fight would still be there when he was ready. Another hour passed as he forged the second Crux of Law, and the moment it was complete, the Law of Inevitability stirred to life at his command.
This time, he didn’t infuse it into the water dome instantly.
Instead, he let the Law of Inevitability settle over the two Crux of Law, and then the product that came out of them would infuse the water dome, strengthening it. Unlike creating the Crux of Law, this process took a short amount of time.
Just a minute before, a translucent shimmer could be seen within the water dome.
Nobody could leave the water dome with this; Rex was sure of it.
"Are you done?" Davina asked from the side.
She saw Rex was panting heavily; his chest heaving up and down worse than before, so he should be done with this.
"Can you wait?" Rex gasped for air. "It hasn’t even been a minute since I’m finished."
"Let’s go to the Cavity," Davina ignored his desperate attempt to catch his breath. "I thought of a way that the enemy High Lord could go around entering the Cavity. And I’m sure you won’t be acting relaxed like this after you hear it."
"Alright," Rex said through ragged breaths. "How? How could the enemy High Lord do that?"
"By hiring an entity like you. Someone from the lower realm with abnormal strength."
"Hmm..."
Rex thought about this and, surprisingly enough, found this to be a feasible method to bypass the rule.
If the enemy High Lord has someone like him, then infiltrating the Cavity is possible.
"Is it worth it to check the Cavity now?" Davina asked, raising her brow tauntingly.
Just as he was about to reply, a voice seeped into his mind.
