Chapter 2053: Damaged reputation

The dead silence weighed heavily on Wu Kong under the gaze of so many Dao Lords, though Lex felt great about it. Wu Kong was one of his most reliable assets, in a way. Although he did not technically work for the Innkeeper, he was helpful enough. More importantly, Lex could always rely on him to stay true to his nature.

He did not need to see through his illusions, or discern his intentions, or

predict his actions. He could just bet that at any given time, Wu Kong was up to no good. The others underestimated him because they relied too much on their

senses.

They could not sense Wu Kong doing anything wrong, so they assumed it was so. Lex did not have such a handicap because he just accepted that there was no way the mischievous monkey would miss any opportunity to gain some advantage.

For example, the situation with Voidmaw. Compared to the past few guests, he lacked a certain lethality despite having an impressive reputation. Was that not the perfect target? As far as Lex could tell, it was.

The most beautiful thing about the situation was that if Wu Kong was caught in the act, the prestige of detecting him would go to the Innkeeper. But if he wasn't caught, by now, his reputation was so soiled that everyone would just believe that only the Innkeeper had been able to detect his actions - even if Wu Kong never actually did anything. He was the perfect scapegoat.

Wu Kong coughed awkwardly, and pulled out his hand, still holding onto a kidney. Without any shame or reluctance, Wu Kong put that away and looked Voidmaw directly in the eyes.

"Your recovery ability is very impressive. I was just testing it out for you - no need to thank me," he said with a nod and was about to leave, but saw the Innkeeper looking at him with a warm smile.

There were no words, no hidden message in his eyes, yet Wu Kong suddenly got chills.

"You know what, on second thought, you can have this back," Wu Kong said, handing Voidmaw back his kidney, three ribs, one bag of blood and a spatial ring.

Yet the more he did this, the more furious Voidmaw became, and the more amused Eclipse became, finally recovering from her flustered state.

"Wu, you should be pleased I am not charging you extra for each of your clones," said the Innkeeper warmly, as if addressing an old friend. "Please refrain from targeting any of my guests during the party lest I feel that you need supervision."

Lex had no idea if Wu Kong had clones or not, but at this point, the truth did not matter. Wu Kong would not reject him, and the others would naturally believe him.

"Hey, my Semi-Sentient Vest is missing," said one of the guests.

"Wait a minute, I'm bald! Where did my hair go?" exclaimed another guest. "I lost my watch..."

"Hey, my socks are gone..."

"I lost my will to live..."

"You left that at home."

"Oh..."

As Lex heard the guests suddenly complaining, he gave Wu Kong an odd look. Treasures, he could understand, but why did he want, or need, another man's socks?

Eclipse, on the other hand, found the whole situation amusing. In truth, she too had not detected the monkey's shenanigans due to her sealed senses, which is why she was surprised by the turn of events, and found them enjoyable.

Ventura, too, did not mind too much. After all, the party had just begun, and there were plenty of opportunities to get back at Eclipse. More importantly, it was essential to ensure his pranks didn't go too far. Thus, the diversion was welcome.

While Voidmaw managed to show some restraint despite the attention, merely glaring at Wu Kong, the others were not so amicable. After all, Dao Lords were worshipped wherever they went, and many of them became used to being honored and revered. When was the last time they had faced such humiliation?

"Is this your idea of a joke, Innkeeper?" exclaimed one of the guests angrily. "Are you toying with us? You brought us here, made us pay, and for what? So that you could sit back and watch someon eone rob us?"

Despite facing an angry Dao Lord, the Innkeeper looked completely at ease, though internally that's not how Lex was feeling. While the Inn could neutralize passive aura, it could not defend him from actual Dao Lords in any capacity. If they so much as decided to nudge him, he was screwed. He needed to defuse the situation, and he needed to do it without lowering the Innkeepers reputation!

"Of course not," the Innkeeper answered. "My sincerest apologies. The purpose of this tea party was to provide my guests with a private venue in which they may converse. Wu Kong, please return all the guests belongings to them immediately. If you continue to disrupt the tea party, I will have to withdraw your invitation."

The accusing Dao Lord clicked his teeth in irritation.

"Do you think such a thing is sufficient compensation?" he asked angrily. Many others nodded in agreement, clearly eyeing Wu Kong and the Innkeeper provocatively. "To me, it seems like it's barely a slap on the wrist. Maybe he had your permission to act like this all along"

As soon as he said those words, Wu Kong's awkward smile and goofy attitude suddenly faded. The matter was getting serious now - something he wanted to avoid, which was precisely the reason he only stole random, valueless things. The issue was not the dozen or so Dao Lords challenging him - they were nothing but pleb to him.

The issue was that because of Wu Kong's actions, the Innkeeper's reputation was being put into question. Now that was something he could not afford at all. Everything was fun and games as long as the Innkeeper treated it like nothing, but if he decided that this was a serious matter, WU Kong would not be able to bear the consequences easily.

Just as he was about to act to attempt to remedy the situation, the Innkeeper spoke once again.

Chapter 2054: I resent that - I paid in full

While Lex could not see through the endless strategies that Dao Lords may employ, he could see through some surface level ploys - at least by Dao Lord standards. For him, as the host, in such an incredible setting and company, to be so blatantly challenged by some random guests was actually not so random.

Maybe they were genuinely upset about Wu Kong’s actions, but this was also clearly a probe. All Lex could say was that either these Dao Lords were way smarter than him, or way too dumb. Why would they challenge him when he could so easily bring them to such an incredible place, while also hosting some entirely out of reach characters in the same party?

Either they saw through his real strength and wanted to reveal it, or they were too dumb to come to the conclusion that anyone who could do such a thing would clearly have to have sufficient power. Another option could also be that they just wanted to show off.

There was a handsome Grizzly who could attract the female guests, an enchanting blue lady who could make even Lex’s heart stir, not to mention countless other impressive guests. Being in the presence of such illustrious company may entice anyone to show off a little to attract some attention. But why would they choose to pick a fight with the one guy trying to make sure no fight erupts? The answer was because they were stupid, that’s why.

"Dear guests, it seems like there has been some kind of misunderstanding," the Innkeeper said warmly, his smile never fading, the light in his eyes never dimming. "I am here, as your host. My purpose here is to ensure you all have a pleasant experience, which is exactly why I stepped in to stop what I can only assume is a harmless prank.

"What I am not here to do is hold your hand and make sure that the mildest occurrence won’t offend you. Dear guest, this is a party with many other guests here as well. While I am here to make sure that the basic rules of etiquette are followed, I have no salve for those who suffer when no harm has been done.

"If you cannot abide by the presence or actions of others, or perhaps if you find my hospitality lacking, then I can only apologise to you - as well as inform you that you are free to leave whenever you wish. Or, maybe, if you wish to take certain matters into your own hands, and seek compensation, then feel free to do so. Just know that as I stepped in to stop Wu Kong from wrongdoing, I will be forced to step in if any rules are broken.

"And if, through some unfortunate actions, I am not able to save you from the consequences of your own actions, and you end up damaging the garden in any way, shape, or form... then I should have you know that the condition to arrange this party was that Eclipse can kill whoever harms her garden. You may test the veracity of my statements yourself if you find my words questionable."𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Throughout, the Innkeeper never dropped his smile, and kept talking as if he was utterly concerned for his guests wellbeing. However, the message was clear: if anyone wants to pick a fight, they need to do so at their own risk. Also, some people really needed to learn how to take a joke.

Silence followed the Innkeepers words, as everyone waited to see if anyone would continue to challenge the Innkeeper.

A challenge need not be a fight - it could be many things. The only question was if anyone would truly have the guts to do it, and if so, how would the Innkeeper react.

Nulli kept giving the Innkeeper provocative looks, as if she was incredibly thrilled by his words, and could not get enough of his diplomatic firmness. Crusty was ignoring the lot of the, staring instead at the flowers Eclipse had collected. Eclipse was waiting for someone to start a fight, and Ventura was studying Voidmaw’s ribs which he had taken from Voidmaw.

It seemed that none of them actually took the probe or threat seriously at all, and instead were treating this like a game, and the other Dao Lords like children.

"Wait a minute," Bridget suddenly said, ignoring the confrontation. "The Innkeeper said you’re not charging Wu Kong for his other clones, right? But I just searched this entire tavern... besides the workers and us, there are no extra people. Does that mean... one of us is actually Wu Kong’s clone in disguise?"

Although she addressed the question to Ballom, the question itself ushered in a new bout of silence as the entire group stared towards Wu Kong, who now had a deadpan expression.

He was struggling internally. The issue was not the Innkeeper - although the Innkeeper had thrown Wu Kong under the bus, he had also defended him, so he was not worried about offending him. No, he was worried about the curious looks the Primordial Queen was giving him.

Dammit, his plan was to lay low so that she didn’t notice him when he slipped into the garden. Now it felt like he was under extra supervision. He gave that one Dao Lord who complained a hateful look. This was far from over.

After that... two other guests who were attending the party, who had accompanied the Governor, and had longstanding relationships and influence going back thousands of years, suddenly morphed into Wu Kong.

"I resent that statement - I paid for the attendance of all my clones," Wu Kong said. It was another matter entirely that he had tried to spread countless hairs across the tavern without transforming them into clones, but they kept getting cleaned up.

Damn that Innkeeper and his impeccable cleanliness!

The Governor, who was up until now focused entirely on the dynamic between the Innkeeper and Eclipse, suddenly had a change of expression. What the hell? Even he had been fooled by the monkey? How many organisations had he infiltrated with his clones? All of them?
