Chapter 35: Bestowing an Artifact!

The five people from Stanford University were organizing their equipment before their trek through the jungle. Among them was a beefy middle-aged man who directed the remaining four. He was Professor Johnson, and the four individuals accompanying him were his students. Three of them were male, and the last was female.

“Professor, why are those soldiers following us exactly?” the sole lady asked.

“I genuinely don’t know, Lucy. This morning the university called, asking to let them accompany us. Apparently, the Department of Defense is involved in some way.”

Professor Johnson’s tone also carried a bit of dissatisfaction. With his status and accomplishments, he did not feel comfortable being rushed into this kind of collaboration without more information.

“Well, let’s just consider them as bodyguards. The forest is full of dangers after all. So long as they don’t interrupt our research, it should be fine. And who knows? They might turn out to be useful,” the professor continued. He gave a helpless shrug.

At this juncture, one of the other men spoke, “That’s right, Lucy! This place is just teeming with danger. There are poisonous insects and fierce beasts by the dozen, and these soldiers might give us an added layer of protection.” He courteously spoke, and eyed her affectionately, “If I didn’t understand your love for zoology I would never have brought you here.”

“Goddamit Dylan do you ever stop?!” Lucy snapped.

At once the remaining students broke out into sniggers. It was common knowledge that Dylan was head over heels for Lucy. He came from a wealthy background, and Lucy, one of the most beautiful ladies of the university, was someone he had been courting for a long time. The two were already considered by most on campus to be a couple.

The professor smiled inwardly at this and reminisced over his own youth. From the corner of his eye, he made out the bespectacled captain approaching them. He clapped loudly to call his students’ attention.

“Alright guys, let’s finish prepping. I’ll be having a chat with the captain in the meantime.”

He then walked over to meet the military man.

The officer saluted the professor before taking out a map, “I apologize for the interruption, professor. I’m sure it’s inconvenient in many ways, but there’s little we can do about such direct orders.”

“It’s no big deal. I’m only a citizen, but I know that sometimes our cooperation can go a long way. In any case, you aren’t the one inconveniencing us. Your bosses are.” The professor’s words were amicable but conveyed his slight annoyance with the arrangement.

The commander smiled apologetically and handed the map to him, “Please take a look. The area marked here is our destination. I am not at liberty to explain the mission’s contents, but will you be able to help guide us there nonetheless?”

Professor Johnson looked at the map and frowned, “This is quite deep into the forest. I have no problem taking you there as it happens to be within my scope of research. However, it’s best that I make something clear: though there is little conflict in this area, it is nevertheless quite dangerous. I would appreciate it if you could listen to my advice as we go through it. It could be the difference between life and death.”

“No problem, professor,” the captain laughed, “I’ll keep those bastards of mine in line.”

“In that case,” the professor nodded and pointed at an area on the map, “I would suggest landing here. Of all the areas close to your target, it’s the most suitable for a helicopter landing.” The professor drew a circle over the designated area before continuing, “I must confess beforehand, officer, that neither I nor my students have any military training. If you wish to conduct any military maneuvers like helicopter taxiing, I’m afraid you’ll find us incapable.”

“No need to worry about that, professor. I have kept in mind you and your students' abilities.”

The captain and the professor discussed some more details related to the mission. After both had hashed out all likely contingencies, they separated to finish their preparations.

The two men came from different walks of life. One a soldier, the other a scholar; but neither knew that this expedition strange would herald great changes to Earth and humanity.

…...

Deep in the Amazon jungle, Louie was lying at the edge of a pool of water. His golden scales could repel most mud and dirt, but some grime still managed to cling to them and dulled their brilliant sheen. Louie felt slightly dissatisfied at this and decided that he needed some servants to wipe them clean.

Under normal circumstances, pools like the one he lay in would be teeming with all sorts of life. Predators and prey of all sizes would engage in deadly tangoes of life and death as they went about their business. However, Louie’s presence had emptied the ecological niche of all its members. Within the few hundred meters surrounding his location, no small animals could be found.

At this point, he had spent several days thinking about how to resolve the food shortage in Dragon City, but no solution seemed to work.

100,000 people really were too big of a population.

Over the past few days, the natives had offered him good food and drinks, putting him in a pleasant mood. Nevertheless, he did not much care for their company, and he would mostly spend his time wandering the forest before returning to the tribe to collect their tributes.

He had made an important discovery after finding the villagers. Whenever they worshipped him while he was in their village, he could feel his divine power fill up slowly. However, when he lost sight of the natives it would not stir, even if they prayed and sacrificed as normal.

Louie was initially quite baffled by this problem. But he soon discovered a way around it.

Because of his great appetite, Louie could finish their offerings in two days. The natives, however, kept trying to hunt for him even while they were hungry. This filled him with a sense of endearment towards them. At the very least, they were quite pious to their deities.

For this reason, Louie felt that it would not be good if they starved to death. As a ‘God’, it was not good to rule by fear, and that he should at least answer the prayers of his believers.

Of course, as a fake God, he couldn’t actually reward them with divine arts. Neither could he personally hunt to feed them. No - that would diminish his divine prestige.

And so he came up with another method of helping them out. Plucking a single one of his scales, he granted it to them. The scale contained a faint amount of his mighty presence, and the natives could take it along with them on their hunts. It would help decrease the resistance of their prey and improve their hunting efficiency.

It also helped him in another way. Because the natives would worship the ‘artifact’ he had bestowed upon them, he would be able to receive their faith at all times, even if he was not personally present.

From this, Louie hypothesized that the statues of Gods often served as conduits for the faith their believers devoted to them.

Since he was not a true god, and so even if a statue was carved in his image, it would be useless. That said, the dragon scale was a part of his body. With his godhood, as long as the believers prayed to his scales, they could also pass on their small amount of faith to him.

Although seventy believers were not many, for a fake Godlike Louie, it was already a rare asset.

Just when Louie was thinking about Gods and food, his acute hearing once again sensed something.

“Eh? This is the sound of human footsteps? Moreover, it’s not just one person, but a group of people……”

Louie became alert.

Gods can bestow divine arts in this novel. So far what reason would they restrict technology at the medieval era ? The fear of technological weapons ? Restrict technology on that part. For what reason would you restrict technology on the front of quality of life. A/c units , city planning , efficient farming , etc. On the contrary this would benefit the gods greatly. Especially if they are the ones who are instrumental in its development.

The more you advance in science the more you understand how the universe worked, like us human we don't all believe that God exist and he created human because of Darwin evolution theory. So maybe they are kept that way to induce more faiths energy.

This logic is flawed. I made a comment in a previous chapter about it in more detail. Your logic would only work if the religions were big scams or they offered nothing to the believer. A religion where through praying you can acquire unique superpowers or blessings or curse your enemy. You don't need to fear critical thinking and a basic understanding of the universe. See Christianity or whatever other religion. Their only proof of credibility is dubious texts usually from uneducated herders and fishermen.

I mean what if when they advance so far that they can somewhat replicated what the God can do and bam, slowly they gonna think God are just a bunch of super advance race like the Terran and they can reach their level with enough scientific advancement.

Gods would just have to make technologies close to that forbidden. Whenever someone touches them faces the collective wrath of all gods and their believers. As I said before this is hardly a reason to keep the civilizations on such a low technology level.

I mean can't they just secretly research them, and it not like gods know all about what can possibly harm or rival them, unless they are omniscient, and i don't think the gods here are omniscient. Because if they are then the moment MC appeared he would got his asses smited by the gods of this world. And the dragon god did get killed by science too.

This is a weak argument. Gods can modify the laws the govern the universe. Who says that they can't cast collectively a divine art that will notify the whenever someone touches a forbiden art. Don't try to sweat it tou much. Author so far has shown that he hasn't thought to much about the plot of the novel. This excuse is flimsy at best.

I wanna say, maybe Gods do not prevent technological advancement in any way, shape, or form. The Divine Arts do. Why would you theorize a source of illness and develop a vaccine when you can just go to a church and cure it directly? Another point, a lot of technologies appeared only after common people were freed from nobility. With real gods and in play, there is no chance, no invention of easy-to-murder-with* weapons can overthrow a government, much less the Theocratic one.
                  *By Earth's standards, mind you

Exactly our current know Earth's standard. Problem is that those don't exit there.

Not to mention you are forgoing the fact that Divine Arts might just be that much better than whatever we can develop with "technology" without touching on the Laws of the World. It is like comparing apples with iron ore. Two completely different things. If you want to see what would happen if Gods rulled our civilization for prolonged periods take a look at the book "Era of Gods".

Basically if True Gods existed , they wouldn't be hampered by our technology. Science is basically our findings through observation. And technology is the application of said scientific knowledge. Gods would just have to offer something that our technology wouldn't be able to offer for faith. Though I don't write off that some gods might just want to raise humans as cattle to harvest faith.

I don't think it's god's purposely doing this, rather it might be the magic and such that simply makes the need for advancement unnecessary.

People simply don't know the definition of the scientific method and technology.

Technology is the application of knowledge.

The scientific method is a method of exploring the world through observation.

Environmental factors heavily affect both science and technology. We invented stone tools because they were easily made from scratch. We invented the coal-fired steam boiler because there was easy and sufficient access to a relatively energy-dense fuel source (coal compared to wood). If natural fission reactors were more common maybe we would have steam engines powered by uranium during the industrial revolution.

Basically, most people's thinking is way too narrow and they are too arrogant about our scientific achievements. They are simply missing the essence of the situation. Not to mention Gods usually rely on turning quantity and quality in their strength. This kind of power system is the most op. From weak peasants to strong extraordinary professionals can turn to the strength of the Gods. The Gods must always be a couple of ranks (of strength) ahead of their strongest believer. The only exception is when God has too few believers and one or more of those believers are really strong. Anything else is simply bad writing. The author basically makes the Gods weaker than they should be in order to facilitate their plot. The collective idealistic (the ability to bend laws through will) will always be stronger than whatever else power system. Our Earth technology is akin to scraping the surface of the Laws. Gods are creatures that harness, bend, or even completely change the Laws of Reality/World. The only way Earth technology can reach that level is by using materials at the level of the God or higher to be able to have a chance in contending with that God. Even then it is doubtful for an ordinary human to even be able to make anything with said material. He will simply lack the ability to even detect properly the characteristics of the material. Much less manipulate the material in a workable "machine". To think otherwise means you are either blindly arrogant or simply ignorant of what science and technology truly mean.

I understand what you mean, but you are neglecting the societal impact and simply focusing on the technology.

There is advancement if there is a need for something, this is a general rule that while not always usually holds. The God's that can bend natural laws give much higher potential for advancement, but in the end the progression of society depends on the upper class rather than the potential afforded by God's.

This is still not mentioning that these upper class people due to magic have lower need for manpower. And that in a world where any single person can hold that much power, the world is much more volatile and prone to wars that would make society regress.

Except Gods care more about the lower classes that are more plentiful. The upper classes lack both quantity and quality. Depending on the rank of the God it would be akin a human squashing an ant.

Societal impact? Authors confuse irl religions with religions with actual Gods. Gods in this DND style fantasy have an advantage that is next to impossible to overcome. That is the transactional nature of faith. Humans offer faith and get favor from the Gods. Said favor might range from spiritual comfort, to blessings like less pests at their field, to harnessing divine arts, to good health, etc. So long Gods can play their cards properly it should be really hard for technology to be a major threat.

Besides you guys missed my whole point. This scenario of Gods suppressing technology should be an exception not the norm. With the time science/technology needs to accumulate knowledge Gods should be easily able to expand human population and ensure a minimum level of piet.

If all of that fails, there is still a trump card. Give a blessing that is made through bending the laws of reality that is important and difficult of even impossible to achieve through current technological means. So long you can gain more faith than you expend to maintain the blessing then you are still needed.
