Chapter 1820: Into the Vurdalak's Lair (part 2)

"Is there anything I can help you with?" Leegaain asked.

"It's not about me. It's about my wife."

"You married and you didn't invite me?" He replied, his feelings hurt.

"Dad, she's an Abomination like me and the ceremony was held in the presence of the Master and my new siblings. Having a Guardian ready to annihilate us would have killed the mood." She replied.

"Are you happy? Is she treating you right?" While Leegaain worried about his daughter, Lith and the others had finished their preparations and were ready to go.

"One last question. How did you find Night's position?" He asked, as paranoid as usual.

"Baba Yaga put us in touch with Dawn's loyalist inside the Undead Courts. We don't trust them so we used our information network to check the rumor they passed us before starting this plan. We wouldn't send you in blindly." Feela tapped on Lith's pin.

Leegaain had once again outdone himself. The artifact not only worked as a small Soluspedia that provided the members of the assault team everything they needed to know about the undead's headquarters, but it also worked as a short-range Spirit Communication device.

The pins were connected to each other, creating a network of mind links that would allow a team to communicate silently as well as with other teams to exchange information in real-time.

Spirit Magic was invisible to non-Awakened and no sealing array would jam its signal.

"Is everyone ready?" Raagu asked, obtaining several nods in reply. "It's daytime so most of the undead will be comatose or weakened. Remember that if we fail, the next time the Dead King will be ready for us."

Her eyes blazed with bright violet energy and so did those of the rest of the Council representatives as they combined their spell for a long-distance dimensional spell.

Together they weaved a Spirit Warping Array that moved the assault teams to their respective positions inside the underground base of the Night Court located in the city of Panat, in the Gorgon Empire.

According to the intel they had received, Orpal steered clear from the Griffon Kingdom due to the seal that Baba Yaga had imposed Night. She couldn't attack anyone without first verifying that they didn't live in Lutia which grated on her nerves.

Tista looked around their arrival location, her jaw almost touching the floor. They had appeared inside a richly decorated room with windows, but plenty of light came from the enchanted crystal chandeliers on the ceiling.

The furniture was made of inlaid secular wood while the ornaments, from the flower pots to the book ends, were made of solid precious metals. The air was fresh and filled with the sweet scent of flowers, making it hard to believe that they were underground.

'Good gods, this is the most luxurious dungeon I've ever been into.' She said via the mind link. 'Yet why the fresh air if they have no need to breathe?'

'The undead like living large.' Lith replied. 'As for the air, usually I'd say that they do it for their Thralls, but if Meln really is here, then he did it just to satisfy his ego.'

'If?' Friya said while moving a curtain with the point of Thundercrash, to not touch anything before checking on the place.

The gesture revealed the presence of a painting gallery in the room to their right. Among the portraits, there was one depicting a half-naked Meln. He was sitting on a throne, his body as perfect as that of a Greek god, while several gorgeous naked women groveled at his feet like animals in heat.

One of them bore a striking resemblance to Tista.

'This is disgusting! How did you put up with such a perverted creep?' Phloria said.

'We didn't.' Tista's face was half-red in outrage and half-green in disgust.

She just wanted to puke and burn the painting, but she had no idea if it had any defense mechanism. Failing the mission just because of Orpal's perversion was off the table. She wanted him dead, now more than ever.

She cast her best array detection spell, Unravelling Eye, to understand what danger lay ahead of them. Life Vision and mana sense were blinded by the massive magical aura of the place that made them useless.

'I don't know if it's intentional, but that painting is the only one connected to an alarm.' Tista said.

'It's intentional. I bet that Meln has placed disgusting pieces of art like this one in the hope to upset us and make us do something stupid.' Lith was disturbed by Orpal lusting after his own sister but even more by his cunning.

Somehow the Dead King had predicted that Lith or someone related to him would have found his hideout and had made sure to shake them psychologically before the real fight started.

Lith preferred his opponents stupid and predictable, but after Manohar's death, he had ceased underestimating Orpal.

'You stay here, I'll scout the place.' Friya wanted nothing more than get out of there quickly, but it would have meant playing straight into her opponent's hand. 'Meln is an Awakened as well so he knows how Life Vision works.

'I bet that all the useless enchantments in this place are here to blind our mystical senses. If you add that to the booby-trapped painting, I'm afraid that there are more surprises waiting ahead of us.'

Tista shared with her the results of the Unravelling Eye spell, allowing Friya to move past the array field without triggering it nor needing to use spells that would drain her focus.

Thanks to Leegaain's pins, Tista could cast Unravelling Eye again as soon as Friya reached a new area even though she wasn't physically there.

While Tista took care of the magical protections for her, Friya used her spell, Scope, to check for guards and make sure that the map the Council had provided them was accurate.

The place was exactly as it was described in the blueprints and the guards were in their place, yet Friya couldn't help but feel the hair on the back of her neck stand up in alarm.

Orpal had filled the place with a magical aura that neutralized Life Vision and weighed on her mana perception. Friya knew that the spells were just cosmetic in nature, but their sheer power ringed a constant alarm in her head.

To make matters worse, all of the guards wore cloaking devices, making it impossible for her to discern their power level and which among them were Night's Chosen, regular undead, or Thralls.

Every one of them moved without making a sound, their presence almost ethereal.

Friya felt as if she had walked inside a den of Wyverns while completely naked and blindfolded. Just like she was depicted in a painting while she begged Orpal for attention yet he ignored her.

As soon as she was done, Friya Spirit Warped back to her companions. Even though she had cast just a few spells, she felt tired and her forehead was covered in sweat. The mental and magical strain from moving in such a hostile environment had taken its toll on her.

'I'm sorry, but I've got only bad news.' She shared with them everything that she had learned.

Yes you are correct, that you do not have physical contact in this phenomenon, but think about the following situation, imagine that you are in Thurd's place and you know that in the future you will attack an enemy, but you have discovered that the person you want to fight/defeat is almost turning into a powerful and immortal guardian just missing one fight that presses to the max would you still fight him in the future?
Most likely not. Maybe you'll try another method but that would not be in line with Mogar's plans.
Anyway this is just a guess of mine not confirmed in the novel.

[demons are beings of darkness, destruction, death and chaos of which lith already does the first second and fourth to a minor degree but this is most likely not enough as even the lowliest demon is known for causing widespread death and destruction so it is likely that he needs to devour a lot of lifeforce to feed his abomination side, to balance it with his human and beasts sides, which is likely to happen in this war, but I feel that is a low class reason and the author will most likely go for the demon's relations to souls and the seven deadly sins. This is where Lith needs to collect 7 souls, 3 of which he already has, each of which relates to one of the 7 deadly sins. Evidence is lochrais, sin of pride(due to his pride in his oath and as a queens guard); valia, sin of greed(due to her wanting to live and make more of her life); trion, sin of wrath(due to his hatred towards meln and himself) and the 7 deadly sins being a big symbol for biblical demons which is the most popular of western demons.]

I understand where you're coming from because I had the same thought but I believe the prisoners bit will only happen when needs to break through to white core since having too many prisoners without having the proper to hold them would more than likely mean their souls would devour him, especially since his lifeforce is damaged which is a weakpoint they can explore, which is why I thought he'll first have 7 deadly sins before becoming 'the abyss' which hosts demons and souls of sinners since they can also serve as supporting cores which control what happens in 'the abyss' and as a white core be won't have to worry about lifeforce since white cores individuals are said to be immortal so it probably will fix his lifeforce.

That is quite likely because if I'm remembering mythologies correctly most demons find it very easy to achieve high ranks of power and other stories they are always one of if not the forces with the most amounts of top level fighting force, requiring multiple races to band together to force then back into hell.

Guys please do not mix the novel with mythology, it is very hackneyed. You can say that it already has mythology inside, but the novel has its own principle and mostly takes only names.
Anyways, guys, your idea would be very interesting to implement and describe and also I remember Salaark's\Baba Yaga's words describing Tiamat as a being of entropy which strongly correlates with your idea of having imprisoned souls replacing own auxiliary cores. Perhaps it even can bring hidden benefits such as access to prisoners' memory or amplification of some skills well known by the prisoners.

                No, that's a major misconception.
Look at Thrud for example, Mogar didn't give her any options to choose from.

If you go back to the chapter were Zaghran the Garuda was giving Scarlett some lessons on "Now That You Are A Guardian" she made this very clear. But most of the readers obviously missed that part.

Mogar doesn't give people options, if your will is attuned to Mogar's will you get Tribulations, if you are successful you become a Guardian.

Only Emperor Beasts can be Guardian candidates, all present Guardians are Beast.

Mogar made an exception once, for Baba Yaga, Mogar wanted her to be the Guardian of Children but she was upset about what happened to her people (Odi) and refused. She decided to live her life for herself not for Mogar.

That was the only time Mogar gave options, Yaga was a special case.
I believe you know Baba Yaga is Human...?

I think this reader is talking about Thrud specifically, maybe he thinks other White Core Mages who have their Will attuned with Mogar are given options.

But what I understand from this book is that when you get the White Core it means your are more attuned to World Energy and you are no longer on Mogar's Guardian candidate list.

I think they (Leegaain & Salaark) became Guardians first before achieving the White Core.

My opinion is that as spirit magic depends solely on the mana strength of the individual's core so I believe that your idea does not have such a good efficiency (according to the laws demonstrated in the novel) against weak individuals it may work, but for stronger individuals (purple core up) I believe it would fail, but this is just a guess I'm not sure.
Another idea I have is that by adding spiritual magic to the array it would destabilize the array since it was designed to work with the six elements, in this case I should try to create another type of arrangement I think.

The intention of Legion 20 and to make its readers acquire hatred and repulsion for Menl this is exactly the same trick that the author of Goblin Slayer used to make the readers of the work hate the goblins and not have anyone wanting to "save" the goblins. saying that they are pitiful creatures who are misunderstood.
If Legion20 doesn't use this trick like he did, there would be a lot of people defending Menl saying that he was a victim of Lith as a child, so even if the readers of the book think that Menl was wronged, no one will side with him because of so much sick and rotten he's become (in fact he's always been sick and rotten)
So just put up with this scum of character and hope that his death is spectacularly cruel!

In my understanding Thrud was always supposed to have certain madness and evil to her, shown by the fact she used forbidden magic and sacrificed the lives of innocent civilians in order to increase her magical power, live for longer complete her father's "madness" and take over the griffon kingdom so she can launch Mogar's equivalent of a world war due to her belief that everyone else is inferior and backwards compared to her and her father and the current royal family are greedy traitors who backstabbed her father...is it just me who thought she's not very likable? I mean, from what I can see, she is the magical/fictional equivalent of Hitler.
