Chapter 1808: Solus’ Birthday (part 2)

Solus squirmed in enthusiasm at the idea of not needing Tista as a proxy anymore.

"Why Lutia?" Rena asked. "I mean, sure, quite a few shops have opened and the quality of the goods is great compared to when Lutia was still a village, but it's nothing compared to Derios, Valeron, or any major city of the Kingdom.

"They have a much better variety and quality in both the fabrics and design."

"I know, but Lutia is my home. My Mo-, I mean Menadion left me here for a reason and I intend to honor it." Solus had corrected herself to not hurt Elina's feelings. After what Orpal had done, she had yet to recover from her personal trauma as well.

"On top of that, if I went to any other city, the nearest mana geyser would be far away and with it the tower. Here, instead, I can still use it to partly fuel my body and have quite some time before the pain begins."

"Excellent thinking. I'm proud of you." Raaz ruffled her hair. "Do you want company? No offense but the citizens of Lutia are a rough bunch and Lith is terrible with clothes."

The entire female side of the family sighed in unison, Leria and Onyx included.

"Thanks for the offer, Dad, but no." Solus replied. "I want to learn to face people on my own and become a functional adult. No offense, Lith, but I wouldn't even bring you along if not for the fact that your presence boosts my stamina."

"None taken." Lith replied. "Do you want me to shapeshift into a different face? The Verhen name brings trouble these days."

The citizens of Lutia blamed every one of Orpal's crimes on his estranged family. After Manohar's death, the city was split into two factions. Half of them were grateful to the Verhens for the jobs they provided to the farmers and Lith's acts of valor for the Kingdom.

The other half hated the Verhens' guts and considered them responsible for everything, from the famine to the current war.

"No. In their eyes, I am but a humble maid. If you disguise yourself as a member of the house staff, the shopkeepers might even refuse to serve us. I don't want to have to argue and fight during my first birthday in almost 700 years.

"Having an Archmage by my side and a hero at that will spare me a lot of trouble." She replied. "After a bit of shopping, I want to go visit Grandma Salaark in the Desert.

"I still have to properly thank her for the Fury and there are a few things that I want to ask her. I know that she has no obligation to help me, but I hope that my birthday will soften her up."

"I can come with you, if you want." Tista was a bit disappointed that Solus didn't include her in her plans.

"I'm sorry, but I want to see how other people look at me. If you come along, all eyes would be on you and every time I try on a dress, I would end up making comparisons between us." Solus gestured at Tista's height and breasts.

"Point taken." She sighed.

After breakfast, Lith and Solus left the farm, walking at a brisk pace toward Lutia. It would take them time to reach the village on foot, but she was eager to feel the sun and wind on her skin.

To enjoy the beauty of nature like a normal person instead of worrying about the death clock hanging on her head.

That day luck smiled on them. The sky was clear blue, with just a few small white clouds pushed forward by a gentle breeze. Yet the biggest surprise was waiting for them inside the city.

There were still a few days left before the Spring Festival so there were no festoons or decorations. The people had no reason to wear forced smiles or be gentle, but everyone welcomed their arrival with cheers and flowers.

A cute little girl with red hair who couldn't be more than ten years old walked up to Lith and handed him a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

"Thank you for your hard work, Lith. Good day, miss Solus." The kid slightly frowned while focusing to remember the lines she had rehearsed, looking even more adorable.

"Thank you, little girl." Lith caressed her head, using Invigoration to give her a full check-up and cure any ailment he found.

The kid stopped being serious and ran away giggling.

"What the fuck is going on?" Lith gifted the bouquet to Solus while trying to understand what had brought so many changes in Lutia's mood.

"Cheapskate. You could have at least bought the first flowers you wanted to gift me instead of just recycling them." She grumbled, yet her confusion beat her anger.

The more they walked across the streets the less the attitude of the people around them made sense.

The city of Lutia seemed to have traveled back in time when it was still a small village and Lith was its local celebrity. Many men came to shake his hand, girls giggled at his passage, and everyone was so friendly to the point of being creepy.

"Lith, my boy!" Zekell Proudhammer, Lith's trusted blacksmith and Rena's father-in-law, laughed at his silly questions about Lutia's sudden changes. "You should get out of your lab more often, or you'll turn into a Lich."

"Nice to meet you, mister Proudhammer. My name is Solus." Since Lith had forgotten about the introductions, she did it by herself.

"Please, call me Zekell, lass. Nice to finally meet the fabled maiden of the Verhens. Between your beauty and your exotic origins, you are the biggest talk of the village ever since Tista got her growth spurt." The blacksmith took a long, not very polite, appreciative look at her.

"Thank you." Solus swept her hair back in embarrassment, finally realizing how the men in the village stared at her, believing that she came from the Desert.

"What's going on here?" Lith asked.

"Isn't it obvious?" Only once it was clear that Lith had no idea what Zekell was talking about did he continue. "Kid, you have recaptured two cities all by yourself."

"I had the help of two armies and-"

"That's not how the story goes around these parts." The blacksmith cut him off with a wave of his hand. "You are a hero of the Kingdom and Meron's favorite. Even the assholes who blame you for Orpal wouldn't dare to mess with Princess Peonia's boyfriend.

"In their eyes, you are royalty already and only an idiot spits in the face of someone who might become King by the end of the war."

'What the fuck? A couple of kisses was all that it took for people to believe we are engaged?' Lith couldn't believe his own ears.

'Well, so far, your deal with Peonia really paid off. The Orichalcum, the crystals, and now it has even bought you the peace that your family so desperately needs.' Solus shared his happiness, aside from one detail.

'If only the Princess was less grabby and didn't hit on you at every opportunity she has, she would be the perfect decoy.' She added.

'I have to go to war with the army I have, not the one I want..' Lith shrugged.

I think it's related to Lith's Abomination/view of death side, only those two traits are neglected and ignored by Lith pretty much all the time

Baba yaga has shown to only care about undead children or anything related to that. This is the reason why she is a white core and not a guardian. She didn't give a damn about werepeople dying which included children but instead she said they got it coming because they thought they could prison someone as strong as dawn.
      Conclusion?
She is hypocrite but well written

I have a feeling his fake relationship with Peonia is going to become a bigger headache in the future.

I'm not sure why Lith and his family are so against leaving the kingdom, I understand they have friends there but it seems to be a bigger headache and a future problem with Lith's family line becoming emperor beasts, its unsure of what will happen with Rena's kids but they still might have dragon/Phoenix blood in them, Lith's and Trista's kids all have the potential to become Tiamat's/Demon's, with the Kingdoms current political parties they would be forced to leave and probably considered spies, it honestly feels like a landmine, Jirni already figured it out and while she is smart and close to Lith the longer he stays in the kingdom the more probable it is for someone else to notice, the crown would be the first realistically since they have the most information about what's going on and where everyone is, it's kind hard to say what they would do with the knowledge, if any of the nobels figured it out, especially with proof, he would be pretty screwed.

Yeah, you are right bro. I am tired of sickening stubbornness. They could very well go away from that place and live a comfortable life. For gods sake, which "real" human dare to live in a village while knowing there are mass murderers tens if not hundreds of after them? And it is not a hard thing to move out. They are not moving out just because of some bond with that place? They have children and still live there while knowing this. Sorry, but author lost me there. Plus it is not hard to move other places. Which one of us move out cause of life conditions? It maybe work, school, family or whatever reasons we humans always move from one place to another. But these sickening desperados don't. Give me one reasonable, for real ONE reasonable answer to this question. All of the past unnecessary wars and sacrifices could be avoided with one move. But they stay and our adventure prolong endlessly. I do not even say that Lith should be a lone wolf cause of bastards that think side characters are inseparable or whatnot but at least he shouldn't bogged down this much. Enough is enough. I am tired. Sigh...

I understand why some of them stay, manohar was loyal to the kingdom even with all of its problems, the Ernas family are politically involved and supporters of the crown.

But Lith has always kept himself at a distance from the kingdom, not wanting to get more responsibilities and have to deal with the politics, he has mentioned that he stays in the kingdom because it's his parents home and his position as an arch mage gets them protection, he also has friends that he is really close to.

Now he could move his family to another kingdom like the desert or the empire and get some land for his parents to continue farming, but he has mentioned that Salaark and the empire both know his actual power and he wouldn't live as lax as a life there.

I think his main reason for staying is his friends, but I would expect more problems in the future, the nobles will continue to try to manipulate him, his niece and nephews will be going to a magic academy in the next few years and unless all the corrupt/high horse nobles are dead they will try to manipulate the grandchildren, honestly unless the war kills most of the nobles I dont see the political field changing significantly for a decade.

Well.... it is fantasy politics , maybe we will get lucky and Lith will somehow avoid the politics.

I know the princess is trying to get Lith but it's extremely unlikely, Lith is letting it appear as if there together because its beneficial, but I don't see him letting it go to far.

Its not that he's being stubborn about it...he just doesn't have a better option for now...in the Desert he'll have to join the nest and go on missions no more free time for experiments and he has very little life anyway...in the Empire there is already a different hierarchy he'll have to earn everything...in kingdom tho...he has a lot of advantages he can just go on a mission every once in a while and pocket most of the stuff but in desert or empire he won't be able to do that...in kingdom his family has protection which he won't get in empire and most likely also not in desert...like Balkor's family lives with him without any special protection...it's pretty unbiased there...and interests aside...do you think its reason enough to switch places constantly like we are saying he should migrate only because its fantasy and we are used to wuxia and xianxia novels as well...its pretty dumb to not have any responsibilities and just go away if you have to be burdened with some...he doesn't have any intimacy towards the kingdom doesn't mean he is not responsible as a citizen...all his titles and achievements are given to him by the kingdom...it's our point of view that says yeah just leave man go somewhere else and fight there...but in kingdom he has respect...he is not a refugee or traitor...he's the archmage of the kingdom and their unofficial soldier magus...except for the political plays he has no issues in the kingdom...and lutia is not a village amymore it's more of a town now...and with an archmage's mansion there it'll become a city soon...so no probs there

When lith visited Balkor's house it had layers of protections and any offenders still have to deal with Phoenixs and Salaark if it goes far enough, he may not have people constantly monitoring his family but the Kingdoms spy group ,I cant remember the name, hasn't had the best track record of keeping his family safe, I think that is mainly because they do their job fine when it comes to regular enemies but when it comes to enemies like horsemen or awakened than it's a little out of scope for them, Lith's titles may come from the kingdom but his achievements come from is own effort, he may have made those achievements in service to his kingdom but it was his efforts that did those achievements and they can't be taken back, Lith might have status in the kingdom be he rarely uses it and doesn't seem to care about it much.

His free time and his family are two main reasons he stays imo, theres no telling how good or bad the protection he would get in the desert, not to mention I'm not sure how much farming his family could do in the desert, but his free time, position in the kingdom, and protection are tenuous, his power and him being a divine beast could be leaked at anytime by one of his enemies, I'm honestly surprised it hasn't already it would be a easy move for his enemies, if it was just his power he would loose some free time and probably have more political headaches, but him being a divine beast could easily turn the kingdom against him.

The kingdom is kind of a mess, the king and queen are too restrained in power because of the mad king and the nobels have too much power, corruption, nepotism, and bigotry has permeated a large portion of the kingdom resulting in most of the problems they have, while corruption can be rooted out over time, nepotism and bigotry go hand in hand and aren't illegal, these problems are what have alienated Lith to prefer work for the kingdom and not serve it.

I'm not saying that these problems can't be solved but it will be a long duration goal, and that won't change the Kingdoms opinion on emperor and divine beasts, the kingdom is a bit racist.
