Chapter 934: Lowering the Difficulty |
Kyle walked to the gate of the village.
"Halt! State your business!" one of the two guards ordered with a strict tone.
Kyle looked at the guard with uncertainty. He had no idea what to do. The guard was a mere Mortal. Kyle could just teleport past him or keep on walking. There was nothing the guard could do.
However, he was supposed to be a Mortal himself. Mortals couldn't teleport or fly.
Kyle's mind came up with countless plans and phrases within the blink of an eye, but a Mortal's mind wasn't supposed to be this fast.
Yet, he already knew how to convince the Mortal just by looking at him. The Energy around the guard was so simple and clear that Kyle could essentially see through his entire personality and past in an instant.
But he wasn't supposed to know these things.
So, what was he supposed to do?
"I don't know," Kyle answered after an eternity of thinking. Yet, what had felt like an eternity to him had just been 0.1 seconds in reality. His answer essentially arrived just a tiny moment after the guard had finished speaking.
"This is a random inspection," the guard said as the second guard approached Kyle. "Do not resist."
Realizing that he had answered too quickly, Kyle waited for two seconds before answering. "Okay."
The guard walked over and moved his hand through all of Kyle's pockets, not finding anything. He didn't even own a single thing aside from his clothes.
"Why are you here?" the first guard asked.
Kyle's mind went through countless arguments and reasons.
"I want to live," he replied.
"You want to live?" the first guard repeated with furrowed brows. "What do you mean by that?"
"I just want to live," Kyle answered. "I want to experience life. I came to this village to experience life."
The first guard looked at the second guard, who just looked back with a raised brow.
The two of them looked back at the stranger, and Kyle could basically read their minds just by looking at their Energy. He tried to ignore the Energy around them, but it wasn't so simple. It was like seeing a red wall while trying to pretend that one didn't see a red wall.
Kyle could tell that he had made a bad impression on them as soon as they had seen him. The bad impression didn't have any apparent cause. It was just there.
However, Kyle knew the cause.
'Despite suppressing my True Sin Aura, their instincts can still sense that I'm not a good person. I can fool their consciousnesses but not their instincts.'
"You may pass," the first guard said. "If you cause any trouble, we will cause you trouble, got it?"
Kyle nodded. "I understand."
The first guard motioned for Kyle to enter the village. They still felt a weird vibe coming from Kyle, but they couldn't deny his entrance just because of a vibe.
Kyle walked into the village and aimlessly roamed around, not knowing what to do.
His mortal body told him that he was supposed to find food and water, but he didn't know how he was supposed to acquire food and water without any belongings.
He stopped near a couple of stalls that sold food and water.
"Are you going to buy something or are you just looking?" an old lady behind one of the stalls asked with a mildly annoyed tone.
"I don't know," Kyle answered. "I'm hungry, but I don't have any money."
The old lady looked at Kyle with an annoyed expression. "Then go get some money," she answered.
"How?" Kyle asked.
"Your kind always finds a way," she said with a snort.
"My kind?" Kyle asked.
"You heard me, your kind," she repeated. "The guards are keeping an eye on you for good reason! If you have money, we can trade. If you don't, go away."
Of course, Kyle knew what she meant. He already knew how this entire village worked and what everyone did. However, he was trying to act like he didn't know all of this.
'I know where I can get an easy job, but I'm not supposed to know that,' Kyle thought as he scratched the back of his head. 'It's so hard to tell what I'm supposed to know and what I'm not supposed to know.'
Kyle sighed. 'This is too hard. Maybe I shouldn't go full Mortal on my first attempt. Let's take it easy for now.'
Kyle turned around and walked to a seemingly random house. He knocked on the door, and a gruff man opened the door with annoyance.
"Hey, you have something of considerable value in your possession, but you don't know what it is. If I don't tell you, you will never find out. I will tell you what it is, but in exchange, I want 10% of the money you get after selling it," Kyle said.
The man blinked in annoyance. "Is this some kind of trick?" he asked.
"There's a round stone in your garden. It looks almost identical to the other stones, but it's not. If you put it above some fire, you will notice that it turns a bit transparent," Kyle said. "If you sell it to the right person, you will get a lot of money."
The man just shook his head before closing the door and going back inside.
Kyle walked away from the house and entered a seemingly random shop. After saying some things, he walked out again.
Finally, Kyle sat down on a random block of wood near one of the streets.
Hours passed.
Eventually, a gruff man entered a shop and came back out with an excited smile, carrying a sack with ten silver pieces.
Initially, he hadn't believed that stranger, but the allure of money had eventually won, and the man had done what Kyle had suggested.
The man saw Kyle and became a bit unsure.
In his mind, he believed that Kyle deserved his reward, but when he thought about losing a silver piece, he found numerous reasons to deny Kyle his reward. In the end, he walked back to his home.
Kyle waited for a couple more hours on his wooden block, and eventually, the man from the shop approached him.
"Alright, I give up. I don't know what this is," the man said. "I only know that it's valuable. If you can actually find me someone who pays the price you've suggested, I'm willing to give you the shop."
Kyle nodded and stood up. "We need to go to the closest town."
An hour later, the man of the shop ordered a horse carriage to the closest town with a guard escort. After all, he didn't want to get robbed by Kyle.
They arrived in the closest town, and Kyle led the man to a guard station. When the man saw Kyle asking for a witness for the deal, he became excited. This meant that Kyle had most likely not lied!
A guard joined their party, and they walked to a big forge. The head smith inspected the stone, and after some haggling, handed over twenty pieces of gold to them.
The guard gave ten pieces to the man and kept the other ten for himself. The other ten would be handed over when the man handed the deed of the shop to Kyle.
By the next day, Kyle owned an entire shop in the village, together with all the money in its vaults. The entire inventory of the shop was barely worth one gold piece.
Almost starving, Kyle grabbed a couple of copper pieces from the registry and went back to the food lady.
"I've made money," Kyle said.
The old lady snorted. "I don't want to know how you made it. Just buy something."
Kyle bought a couple of loaves of bread, a big bucket of clean water, and walked back to his new shop.
On his way, he saw a furious teenager running past him.
"Hey, you," Kyle said.
"What do you want?!" the teenager shouted, turning to glare at Kyle.
"You look like you're not afraid of some conflict," Kyle said. "Want to guard my shop for five copper pieces a day?"
The teenager furrowed his brows.
Five copper pieces a day was pretty good for his circumstances.
"What do I have to do?" the teenager asked.
