Chapter 858: Ascenders

777 Four Ways

"That sounds... risky," Kyle said with a deep breath.

"Oh yeah," Sebastian said with a nod. "I can see how everyone else died. Dude, the pain... it was indescribable. When she told me that I should condense Sin Flames and that I should learn to live with them for ten thousand years in preparation for the experiment, I already expected a lot of pain, but damn, it was so much worse."

When Kyle heard that, he took a deep breath through his teeth. He knew very well how painful Sin Flames were. He couldn't imagine a worse pain, but apparently, it could get even worse.

"Why was the pain so bad?" Kyle asked.

"Because I needed to change how my everything works," Sebastian answered. "My Core Spark is still connected to me, and an Elemental is made of pure Elemental Energy. Sure, you can store Elemental Energy in your Center, but that's because it has your will on it. The Lightning Energy I get from my Elemental is willless. Imagine Lightning coursing through your... everything, just everything."

Kyle shook his head in disbelief. "I'm pretty sure that's impossible. If willless Elemental Energy courses unchecked through your body, it's not different from a guy attacking you. Even if you could withstand the pain, you would just explode and die."

"Yeah, which is why I said that it's because of her," Sebastian added. "She kept me alive by continuously healing me. I was essentially dying for a long time while being conscious."

"And how are you not dying now?" Kyle asked with a raised brow.

"Because I had to change everything," Sebastian answered. "It's the same principle the Cult uses to change their ratio of Death and Energy. You have to find ways to combine them, but you have to do that yourself. Others can't help you with that. It's like understanding a really difficult Law, except that you're in unending agony the entire time."

Kyle just shook his head. He understood the principle behind it. He could see how it could work, in theory.

'Dude, that's unfeasible,' he thought. 'It's like saying that a Mortal could work for 17 hours every single day for an entire decade without any weekends. Technically, you could get enough sleep and could probably find a way to eat and drink, but it's not feasible. Nobody can withstand that much stress for so long.'

Kyle looked at the Lightning Elemental. 'I don't think I could do that.'

"Anyway," Sebastian said, getting back to the primary topic, "this was one of the reasons why I was an Overseer for so long. We had to experiment a lot. However, I also wanted to wait for the right time to go to the Supreme World."

"Right time?" Kyle asked.

"Yeah, I was waiting for you," Sebastian said with a smirk. "I wanted to wait until you became a Sage or were about to become a Sage."

Kyle's eyes widened. "You waited because of me?"

"Yep," Sebastian said with a smile.

"Why?" Kyle asked. "It's been forever since we saw each other. Didn't you have other friends who were a bit easier to find?"

Sebastian's smile vanished, and a distant expression appeared on his face as he looked to the side.

Kyle could tell that he had hit a sore spot.

"In short, no," Sebastian said with a sigh. "My time in the Secondary World was... tumultuous. I found friends here and there. Most of them died in battle. Some of them betrayed me. When I basically became the enemy of the world, the remainder stepped away. I mean, I get it. I don't expect anyone to walk to their doom. It's their decision."

Kyle remembered the time he and Sebastian had been hunted by almost the entire Tertiary World. The Winterfire Kingdom had won, and their leaders wanted to kill them, which basically meant that the entire world wanted to kill them.

"Why did you become the enemy of the world?" Kyle asked.

"My Battle-Strength was too high, and there are limited resources," Sebastian said with a shrug. "You've no idea how often I've heard certain phrases."

"You're too outstanding to be left alive."

"You have to die before you grow up!"

"We know that you want our Treasures!"

"Join us or die!"

"You can't be left alive!"

"You're a disaster waiting to happen!"

"I will save the world!"

Sebastian groaned and shook his head. "You get the drill. I mean, you should've experienced something similar in the Secondary Sector. The difference is just that my guys didn't have a way to leave the world, which made them more desperate and aggressive. Your guys only want to become Legendary Crushers. They could've just left."

Kyle's brows rose. "You know about the Legendary Realms?"

"Kyle," Sebastian said as if Kyle had asked a question with an obvious answer. "I became the Overseer of a Secondary World. Do you remember how we needed Ether Essences in the Tertiary World? Do you remember how many there were? You need even more to become a Sage, relatively speaking."

"Now, in a world where everyone needs Energy to advance, how many conflicts do you think there are over resources? An Advanced Crusher doesn't have the power to get enough resources to become a Sage, but they might be able to get enough resources to become a Fulfilled Crusher."

"However, you can only hope to succeed if you are already extremely powerful, which means a high Battle-Strength, which means a powerful Complex Law. Do you see where I'm coming from?" he asked.

Kyle saw where Sebastian was going with this. "So, you became a Legendary Crusher."

Sebastian snorted. "Which Sage, who managed to ascend to a Primary World, isn't? Anyone who manages to gather so many resources in a Secondary World is an overlord who can command the entire Secondary World. It's no different from becoming the overlord of a Secondary Sector, except that it's more brutal."

As Kyle listened to Sebastian, he realized something.

'I think I was underestimating the Seekers in the lower worlds,' he thought. 'In the Supreme World, we have access to all of these amazing Law Wells, resources, techniques, experiences, and so on. How could Seekers in lower worlds compete with that?'

'However, that's a generalization. Our resources give us more Seekers, and the truly talented ones will become even stronger.'

'Yet, almost every single Seeker who manages to ascend is outstanding. Which ascending Seeker hasn't dominated an entire world?'

Kyle sighed. 'In Primary Worlds, while looking at freshly ascended Sages, it would probably be strange to find a Sage who hadn't been a Legendary Crusher once.'

"Anyway, to finally answer your question," Sebastian said while gesturing to the Red Witch, "I ascended recently because she said that you might need my help. She said that you were in hot water."

Kyle looked at the Red Witch with a raised brow.

"Why would she care?"

The Red Witch just smiled. "Your strength is valuable to us, and Sebastian sees you as a friend," she answered as if she had read Kyle's mind. "Also, if you were chased by a Sage and Sebastian saved you, it might draw out a big fish. I can't risk unveiling my identity for a small fish."

'And it did draw out a big fish,' Kyle thought with a sigh.

Then, he remembered something. "Speaking of," he said, "the Array of Stars probably knows that you're a Parasite now, right?"

The Red Witch just smiled calmly. "No, they don't suspect a thing."

Kyle's eyes widened. "How? I'm pretty sure they track our whereabouts and would notice your absence."

The Red Witch kept smiling. "They don't know about this Avatar. They think I have three Avatars, but I actually have four."

Kyle wasn't convinced. "Won't they suspect that you have a secret Avatar? That sounds like a common loophole that people might use."

The Red Witch shook her head. "They won't for one simple reason."

"It's stupid to condense more than three Avatars. The more Avatars you have, the weaker they are. Most Immortals have two, and only Immortals who are very confident in their Battle-Strength have three."

"You can only condense your Avatars in the Fusion Realm. As soon as you're an Immortal, you can't make more. Nobody would risk their eternal future just to keep an extra Avatar hidden away."

"I have already shown my Battle-Strength to the Array of Stars, and in their opinion, I am a very powerful Immortal with three Avatars."

The Red Witch chuckled. "They don't know that I was essentially fighting with a secret handicap."

Chapter 859 - Parents and Children

'She's more powerful than I had anticipated,' Kyle thought. 'I heard from the Chief Overseer that the Red Witch is powerful and talented, but they didn't even know that she was fighting with a handicap.'

"How big is the handicap?" Kyle asked. "How much power do you lose with each additional Avatar?"

The Red Witch kept smiling politely. "In order to create an Avatar, you have to split yourself in two. At that point, you will also refer to your original body as an Avatar. In the beginning, both of your Avatars will have 50% of your original power, but they will grow stronger with time. Yet, it's important to note that you will never reach the power of your old body again, relatively speaking."

"The most you will recover is 90%. Both of your Avatars will have 90% of the power of your original body. If you condense a third Avatar, the maximum will be 80%. With a fourth, it will be 70%. I would assume that you realize now why condensing a fourth Avatar is considered a bad idea."

Kyle nodded. 'Yeah, I can see why. Two people with 50% power will be helpless in front of someone with 100% power. The enemy will be twice as fast, twice as durable, and twice as strong. They will launch an attack, destroying one of the 50% power bodies, and the remaining body might not even be able to hit or damage the enemy.'

'This is an overall difference, not a specific one. A Unique Crusher has twice as much Energy in their Center as me. However, their Soul, mind, and body are not much stronger than mine. If all of their Aspects of Power became stronger, it would be much harder to jump a level.'

'Two bodies with 90% power will almost definitely be stronger than one body with 100% power. Even with only a single body at 90% power, the gap can be overcome. You can survive with only one Avatar, but you can also become extremely powerful if you get your second Avatar to join the fight.'

'With three Avatars, you basically need to always travel with two Avatars if you want to have a good shot at surviving a battle. At that point, you might as well only have two Avatars since you're treating two of them as one. Unless you have incredible Battle-Strength, it's a bad idea to condense three Avatars.'

'Creating four Avatars would be idiotic unless your Battle-Strength is unreasonably high.'

Kyle looked at the Red Witch. 'Either she's insane, or her Battle-Strength is ridiculously high.'

As he kept looking at the Red Witch, Kyle felt a confusing mix of emotions. His relationship with the Red Witch was complicated.

She had given him an opportunity to become a Seeker, which had changed his life for the better.

But she had treated him in the worst imaginable way when he became an Overseer.

But she had treated Sebastian very well.

But she had pushed him to join the Cult of Final Fate in the worst way.

But she had saved his life.

Until just recently, Kyle could summarize his relationship with her as overwhelmingly negative, but now, she had helped Sebastian and saved his life.

Was he still pissed at her? Of course! The shit this bitch forced on him was horrible!

Yet, she had also helped him and his friend.

'Friends,' Kyle thought with a sigh as the images of Swamp Dragon, Star Genesis, and Manny shot through his mind. Fierce Breaker was apparently also a part of their group now, but Kyle hadn't been in a lot of contact with him. 'Can I even see them again? They're part of the Array of Stars, while I'm not.'

As Kyle remembered the Array of Stars, his heart filled with rage.

'I did what they told me to do! I went to the Secondary Sector to make a name for myself, but as soon as the first sign of trouble arrived, they stopped helping me! I would be fine with that if Dawnlight were my only enemy. I mean, we're both parts of the Secondary Sector.'

'But that's not the case! My issues didn't come from Dawnlight but from the Contrast Empire! The Contrast Empire intervened in the Secondary Sector and made me a criminal! Metaphorically speaking, Dawnlight and Explosive Karma were two kids in a brawl, while the Array of Stars and the Contrast Empire were our fathers. We fought, and when the other kid lost, their father intervened and tried to punch me.'

'Meanwhile, my father didn't do jack shit! The other kid's dad tried to hit me again and again, and my own father only watched!'

'An Organization is supposed to offer protection against things its Disciples can't reasonably fight against! The Array of Stars didn't even allow me to use my accumulated Contribution Points! Sure, I can't contact them, but that doesn't mean that my friends were unable to! Technically, they could have exchanged my Contribution Points under my name, but the Array of Stars didn't even allow that. After all, can't help a criminal, right?'

As Kyle thought about the Chief Overseer, he felt mixed emotions. ‘He wasn't a bad guy. I believe he tried his best to help me, but as an important member of the Array of Stars, he had to follow the rules. He tried to get the Array of Stars to help me, but he didn't succeed. After all, he could've also just watched from a distance, acting like he wasn't there. Instead, he appeared, answered my questions, and asked the Array of Stars to solve the issue.'

Kyle was reminded of Earth. This kind of dynamic happened there constantly.

A talented and hardworking employee would ask their supervisor for a promotion. They were doing twice as much work as the other employees with half of the errors. The supervisor could see the effort the employee put in and went to the manager, asking for the employee to be promoted. This would be a great benefit for the company.

And then, the manager would shut everything down. Too expensive. Not enough positions, too few soft skills.

The supervisor tried their best, but in the end, they couldn't help the employee.

Something similar had happened to Kyle and the Chief Overseer.

Kyle sighed. 'The Chief Overseer tried his best. I don't think it's his fault that everything went down like this.'

Kyle clenched his fists 'It's the Array of Stars! Their upper management is a bunch of old and timid men, blinded by wealth and status! They forgot the very thing that made them as powerful as they are!'

'Momentum! True Battles! Is the Contrast Empire beatable? Of course! Is it a certain victory? Definitely not! So? That sounds like a standard True Battle to me!'

'What do they think is going to happen? Will the Contrast Empire just stop antagonizing them if they wait for long enough?'

Kyle took a deep breath before thinking about his friends again.

'Will I ever see them again?'

After a bit, he turned to the Red Witch. "I can't work as a Parasite anymore, for obvious reasons," he said. "So..."

    "What happens now?"

Chapter 860 - Who Has Changed?

"That is up to you, Mr. Freeman,” the Red Witch said. "I've done my job. The Cult generally doesn't force things on you unless you have explicitly agreed to it beforehand. You may return or try to get back to the Main Dimension."

Kyle sighed. "I had a plan for going back to the Main Dimension. The reason why I left half of my wealth on my Planet was so that random people could find it and benefit, generating a bunch of positive Karmic Luck. I planned on escaping to the Hell Dimension, leaving the Secondary Sector, and waiting until my Karmic Luck improved."

'Guess that plan won't work anymore. While I didn't directly kill them, I was partially responsible for two Immortals dying. I don't think some donations can fix that much negative Karmic Luck.'

Kyle thought back to the Cult. 'They haven't treated me horribly. I agreed to become a Parasite, and they even amended my contract with them due to my doubts.'

Kyle sighed. again 'It's actually crazy. My relationships with any of the Peak Organizations are either negative or neutral. At this point, I can say my relationships with the Array of Stars and the Contrast Empire are negative, while my relationships with the Grand Exchange and Inner World are neutral. Although my relationship with Inner World might have changed since I shared their secrets, that's my fault, not theirs.'

'The Cult is the only Organization that I have a positive relationship with, which is ironic since they're working on destroying all of existence. Doesn't the antagonist usually treat their minions horribly, while the protagonist treats their people well? Why is it the other way around?'

Kyle thought about his options 'Even if could go back to the Main Dimension, it would be a stupid and suicidal thing to do. I'm almost definitely a criminal, and if the Array of Stars finds out that I'm still alive, they will also try to kill me. One of their Immortals has died, and if they find me, they will capture and investigate me. I don't think I could keep things secret from Immortals and Lords. They probably have all kinds of methods to pull my secrets out of my brain.'

'They will probably also pay the Grand Exchange to tell them about my whereabouts if they ever see me. Inner World probably wants to kill me anyway by now.'

'There are more Peak Organizations, but I don't think any of them are willing to offend three other Peak Organizations for me.'

'It's funny. My goal was to leave a large impact on the world, and I did just that. As a mere Crusher, I managed to deeply offend three Peak Organizations to the point that they want me dead.'

'Becoming a Legendary Crusher will be the easiest thing in the world, but my future in the Supreme World is cut off.'

I could try growing stronger on my own, but that's not realistic. I need some kind of backing, Guess I'm stuck with the Cult again.'

"Thank you for your help, and thank you for helping Sebastian," Kyle said.

The Red Witch just smiled, "Karmic Bonds are not green or red," she said "A Karmic Bond is often filled with both grudges and gratitude. Life is complex, and it's up to the individual to decide whether a Karmic Bond is green or red. I don't think this will be our last meeting, Mr. Freeman."

"Whether you decide to look for me when you have the power to kill me or decide to look for me to ask for help, one way or another, we will meet again."

      Then, the Red Witch vanished.

      Kyle took a deep breath.

At that moment, Sebastian hit Kyle's shoulder. "Lighten up, will you?" he asked with a smile "We see each other again after a long time, and you just keep sighing like a regretful old man. The Kyle I remember had a lot more energy and cheer!"

"Sorry, it's just that a lot has happened," Kyle said. "My entire world was turned upside down."

"So what?" Sebastian asked "You just gotta get back up and fight. Life is a constant struggle, and if you stop struggling, you die. Don't tell me you've never been through something like this before.'

      Scenes shot through Kyle's head.

The time he fled from the Winterfire Kingdom. Back then, he felt like he had been hunted by the entire world. It felt like there was no escape.

The time he had become Overseer. He also had felt like there was no escape.

The time he had been declared a criminal. Again, no escape.

And yet, I've always escaped,' Kyle thought, 'I think Sebastian's right.'

      Then.

Kyle punched his own face as Sebastian's brows rose.

"You're right!" Kyle shouted. "Constantly complaining and lamenting won't get me anywhere. Actually, I have to do something if I want to change something!"

Sebastian laughed, "That's right! That's the Kyle I remember! Anyway, how about we catch up a bit? I wanna know what happened after I left."

      "You don't know?" Kyle asked.

Sebastian shook his head. "Nope. The Red Witch just said that you joined the Cult."

Kyle snorted "That's her doing. The way she recruited me was special."

Kyle told Sebastian about the things the Red Witch had forced him to do, and Sebastian's expression became more uncomfortable.

His relationship with her was quite good, but he couldn't deny that what she had done to Kyle was horrible.

"That's. yeah, I can see why you're not the biggest fan of her," Sebastian said.

"Was she better to you?" Kyle asked.

Sebastian nodded. "Yep. She always treated me respectfully and never forced anything on me. My current power is also thanks to her. I consider her a close friend."

      "Even now?" Kyle asked.

"Of course," Sebastian said "You two are adults. Whatever beef you have is between the two of you. If you two want to kill each other, be my guest. I won't stop either of you, but I also won't support either of you.'

Kyle raised a brow. "You're acting like this is an equal conflict and not one vastly more powerful person forcing things on weaker person."

"I think you misunderstood,' Sebastian said "You have to keep in mind that the Red Witch has given me tremendous help. She has changed my life for the better several times. I am extremely grateful to her. If anyone wanted to do something to her, assuming I had the power, I would stand by her side."

"If she hadn't done something this horrible, I would be on her side right now. The fact that I'm neutral, after all she has done for me, shows that I definitely view her as the aggressor."

Sebastian shrugged "It's just that it doesn't really concern me, you know? I have her as a friend. I have you as a friend."

Kyle felt like he was looking into the past.

The things Sebastian had said sounded exactly like the things Kyle would have said in the Tertiary World. It was an attitude of indifference.

For just a moment, Kyle felt like Sebastian had changed.

But then, he realized that it wasn't Sebastian who had changed.

      It was him.

Once more, Kyle saw the difference between Swamp Dragon and Sebastian.

"Actually, fair enough," Kyle said "Our conflict shouldn't involve you. You're right."

Just because Kyle admired Swamp Dragon's personality didn't mean that Sebastian wasn't right.

'I want freedom, and if I don't allow other people to have freedom as well, I will just be a hypocrite.'

'Well, unless their choices endanger me, in which case I will make the free decision to beat the shit out of you.'

I really like this chapter because it continues to build on Kyle's change as a person which has been worked on for roughly the entire time he's been in the Array of Stars. He used to be easily defined as psychotic from our standards due to his lack of feeling towards life and grief (his lack of ability to feel it) but as more time passes and he changes himself (mind implant I don't remember what it's called) he becomes a better 'person' by moral standards, not Seeker standards.
