Chapter 3006: Boons of a Nightmare

It did not take them long to travel to Vanishing Lake — Tamar summoned her Echo, the grotesque wolf, while Telle summoned the griffin she had inherited from her mother. June had a mount, as well — it was a sleek Echo that would have doubtlessly turned heads on the streets of Bastion if he ever wanted to draw attention to himself.

Rain rode the wolf Echo with Tamar. She had already brought her friends up to speed with the current events, so it was time to satiate her own curiosity.

“Your Nightmare lasted for a long while. What, exactly, happened there?"

Tamar did not answer immediately. Eventually, she sighed.

“It took place here, in Mictlan... in Godgrave, I mean. Only not the Godgrave we know — in Godgrave that existed once, a long time ago, before the sky above it was covered by a veil of clouds."

She remained silent for a moment, then added in a somber tone:

"It was still hell, though. The scarlet jungle was not as powerful as it is today, since it could never create a foothold on the surface of the Sun Killer without the Cloudveil. Oh, the Sun Killer is what people of Mictlan called this giant skeleton, while Mictlan was their word for the Hollows. The jungle was still teeming with abominations, was still ever-growing and relentless... was still an endless source of Corruption."

Tamar exhaled slowly.

"We were given the roles of Awakened warriors in a conflict between two Transcendent powerhouses of Mictlan. One of them was Ketzelkan, the Winged Serpent. The other was known as Shatana. The two of them... had different opinions about the fate of this land and its people."

She shook her head.

“The locals believed that the Sun Killer was still alive, and that the scarlet jungle was a manifestation of his will to be reborn. The White Abyss — the sky above Godgrave — was therefore meant to prevent him from ever becoming complete. And the sacred duty of the people of Mictlan was to ensure that the Sun Killer never defeats the White Abyss."

Tamar lingered for a few moments before continuing.

“The problem was that the people of Mictlan were just as trapped in the Hollows as the scarlet jungle was, lost in eternal darkness. And without access to the surface, they were slowly going extinct. Their extinction was not obvious yet, at the time of the Nightmare, but it was easy to predict. So..."

She grimaced.

"So, Shatana wanted to do something about it, even if it meant turning their backs on the sacred duty of guarding the Sun Killer. Ketzelkan, meanwhile, was vehemently against betraying their purpose. So, the two of them opposed each other, and their difference of opinion eventually turned into open hostility.”

Tamar smiled bitterly.

“Basically, we had a choice of helping Shatana succeed or helping Ketzelkan prevent her from succeeding."

Rain hesitated for a while, then asked:

“So, what did you choose?"

Tamar looked ahead.

“Telle and I wanted to support Ketzelkan, while Ray and Fleaur wanted to support Shatana and her daughters. In the end, June had the deciding vote, and he chose Ketzelkan — not because he agreed with what Ketzelkan represented, but simply because Ketzelkan was far more powerful, and siding with him was going to increase our chances of survival."

She fell silent for a few moments.

"So, we infiltrated Shatana’s factions, revealed her plans, and helped Ketzelkan kill her before she could create the Cloudveil. Her and her people, I mean. Dooming the civilization of Mictlan to disappear far sooner than it would have disappeared otherwise."

Tamar shook her head.

"I am glad to have survived, but that Nightmare... it really left a bad taste in my mouth. I still don't know if we made the correct choice, and I think I never will."

Rain put a hand on her shoulder.

"Surviving was the correct choice. So, I am glad June was there to make it."

By the time they reached Vanishing Lake, Rain managed to satiate her curiosity and learn what their Ascended Abilities were, as well.

The shockwave that almost blasted her off the ziggurat had been produced by Tamar. Her Ascended Ability was quite a versatile one, but one that demanded a long period of training to master. It allowed her to transform momentum into kinetic energy, as well as channel that force in a variety of ways.

In short, the faster Tamar was moving, the more devastation she could cause. She could create a widespread explosion of kinetic force around herself, or shape the blast into a narrow cone in front of her, for example.

Interestingly enough, her momentum was consumed by the transition, bringing her to a stop. That ostensibly freed her from the shackles of inertia, which opened a whole spectrum of tactical possibilities in combat. The more insidious side of her Ascended Ability, though, was that the momentum Tamar could drain and transform was not limited to her own. She could augment her swordsmanship by turning the momentum of her sword into pure concussive force, for example... or she could drain the momentum of the swords and arrows aimed at her.

Or even of her enemies, if they were close enough.

Telle's Ascended Ability was equally as potent.

The Dormant Ability of the young lady of the White Feather clan allowed her to create electric currents within her body, which augmented her physical prowess and made her far faster and stronger than most Awakened of equal Rank. Her Awakened Ability, meanwhile, allowed her to channel these currents outward, either augmenting her weapons or simply firing them off like bolts of lightning.

Her Ascended Ability, though... it allowed her to manipulate magnetic force instead. Needless to say, the applications of that power were endless. From hastening her sword to manipulating the movement of the enemy's blade, she could do it all — as long as the weapons were magnetic, of course. She could even fly by using her Ascended Ability on her own armor.

And those were merely combat uses — there were countless things Telle could do outside of combat, as well. She could spend years trying to discover them all and still only scratch the surface.

Ray's Ascended Ability, meanwhile, was just... weird.

His Dormant Ability made him hard to notice, while his Awakened Ability simply made him invisible and imperceptible. Her Ascended Ability, however, allowed him to apply these qualities to other objects and beings.

For example, Ray could apply his Dormant Ability to a building and make it so that no one would notice it even if they walked past it a thousand times. Alternatively, he could make the whole cohort invisible — although that would drain his essence much faster. In fact, the expenditure of essence depended not only on what he was trying to conceal, but also on who he was trying to conceal it from. Nevertheless, it was an Ability with an incredible level of utility. And lastly, there was Fleur, the healer of the cohort.

Her Dormant Ability allowed her to alleviate fatigue, while her Awakened Ability allowed her to stem bleeding and hasten the process of natural recovery. Her Ascended Ability, meanwhile, granted her the power to augment the bodies of her allies, making them stronger and far more resilient than they would usually be.

Naturally, most members of the cohort were also members of the Shadow Clan, which meant that their Marks had risen to a new Rank, as well — so, the boons granted to them by the Mark of Shadow grew more potent, as well.

...Fleur was the last because June simply refused to share with anyone what his new power was. He insisted that it was because true professionals did not reveal their cards, but there were too many fishy things about that explanation. If anything, it seemed as if he was embarrassed to tell them what his Ascended Ability could do.

‘Old people... are weird!’

Rain scratched her nose.

‘I wonder how I stack up against them.'

None of them could talk with ancient towers, that was for sure.

And none of these Abilities could beat the versatility and utility of Rain's Epithets, either.

Overall...

She was just glad that her friends were back from the Nightmare in one piece.

Soon, the Vanishing Lake appeared in front of them.

Having spent months living in a tent, Rain could not wait to get back to civilization.

I think this is just me taking cues too literally, but are they trying to set June up with Rain? That would be kinda funny just for the names, but it felt real sudden for her to smile and wink at him. Rain is pretty friendly, so it wouldn’t be like TOO surprising, but I feel like there might’ve been hints in the past I’m forgetting. Though in the novels defense, I also remember thinking it was setting up Rain and Tamar for a bit, so I am likely just reading into things too much both then and now

In simple terms, don't allow her to hit you... Also it depends on how G3 wants to apply her abilities, but that shit is scary. It can make her invincible in close combat.
Abilities are broad and have many applications it all depends on the restrictions G3 places on it... But if she can steal her enemies momentum, and that of objects and things, making them return to a state of rest or in simple terms bringing them to a stop... It would be hard for attacks to reach her

Is Tamar’s ability really that nonsensical, or am I just not getting what g3 is trying to say? What does “converting momentum into kinetic energy” mean? These two aren’t things that can be converted into one another. Also "in short, the faster Tamar was moving, the more destruction she could cause" this is something that happens even without an ascended ability. Am I missing something, or is G3 a bit confused here? The only point of her ascended ability should be the ability to channel her power output

I’m of slightly different mind; it’s my understanding that her aspect is control over where energy is applied by siphoning an equal amount of energy from surrounding processes. I disagree with it just being an efficiency or effective-ness issue since that would mean she just has an intuition/ability to perform actions with near-zero waste instead of the ability to generate concussive blasts.

I go into this rabbit hole further down the chain, but something I didn’t mention there is that there’s gotta be something more than what I’ve described to justify the concussive blasts just from moving. I don’t have the brain power to try to dig into it right now in a way that builds on what I’ve already said, but it’s an issue I know will be addressed eventually

I’m pretty confused about the fine details of it too. Momentum isn’t necessarily something that creates kinetic energy, it’s a measure of a different unit altogether. You can extrapolate kinetic energy [M L^2 / T^2] from momentum [M L / T] when you know specific information as they rely on the same components for calculation, but again, different things along different dimensions to describe different physical phenomena. It’s similar to comparing velocity versus acceleration as components of motion. I guess a more generalized explanation would be the specific concentration of where force accumulates, and then further manipulating how that force disperses.

Advisory that the next 2-3 paragraphs are pretty unnecessary and poorly paraphrased physics. It’s borderline pedantic, it’s just the thought process I used to isolate how I think the power could work in case somebody else thinks similar to me and this helps them.

I had to look up specific definitions beyond current background knowledge, but a quick summary is momentum is roughly the “amount of movement” in a system, where inertia is resistance to change in movement for a system. Momentum itself isn’t energy, it’s represented by p = mv. Inertia gets more complicated, it’s more of an energy measurement for a mass, as in “You need x amount of energy to move object A from this state of movement to another state of movement.” Then kinetic energy is the measure of energy from an object of mass X moving at speed Y, represented by KE = 1/2 m*v^2.

In the most literal sense, you can calculate the kinetic energy held by momentum by squaring p and dividing it by 2 * mass, as this gives you the same units as kinetic energy with the same values. Expressed as KE = p^2/2m, that’s how much kinetic energy Tamar would get from any given momentum if the mass and velocity are known quantities, but that’s literally just how kinetic energy already works.

To that end, energy is always conserved, fictional aspects aside. Energy may be converted into something else, like heat or kinetic energy, so it may not be independently conserved per type of energy, but a closed system will retain its net energy across varieties. So, swinging a sword turns chemical potential energy stored in the body alongside gravitational potential energy into the kinetic energy (equally so for momentum, though not causally related).

The kinetic energy can’t be greater than the energy exerted, though it can be directly distributed in a way that’s still conserved. If a collective sword is moving at speed X with mass A, then Tamar would presumably be able to make a smaller fraction of the sword with mass B where B < A move at a much higher speed for more penetrative power at the expense of the rest of the sword very suddenly coming to a stop, where the secondary speed Y is, in rough terms, equal to AX/B. It would basically destroy the sword, as instant acceleration changes are incredibly violent and you can’t have one part of the blade move while the rest of it stays still without that itty bitty part moving still pulling the rest of the blade, so it would see more use in weapons designed to fragment, but this is a really specific example. Hypothetically, she wouldn’t be able to make a sword swing carry more power, but she would choose how that power is transported.

Alternatively, I wonder if she can “store” momentum. This would open up a world of possibilities if that’s what G3 is implying/describing. Or not even really store, but I just realized I was thinking about this too narrowly. So like, not storing the energy on second thought, but definitely expanding past the scope of a singular object; if there are a barrage of arrows coming at her, she would be able to drain their collective kinetic energy and turn it into her own attack. Or if she’s falling, she would be able to effectively render it harmless by converting any energy from her momentum above the normal force of the ground into a concussive blast elsewhere, if that makes sense.

This might make no sense, which is fair, but I personally feel like I kind of get where G3 is going with this after this entire dissection. I hope it makes some amount of sense, though.

Well you were right about making no sense. It is completely scientifically incorrect.

First, velocity and acceleration are not "different things along different dimensions." Acceleration is just the rate at which velocity changes over time. They exist in the exact same spatial dimension and follow the same directional vector.

Second, force does not "accumulate" at a concentration point. What you are describing is basic pressure (Force / Area).

Finally, tossing momentum into the mix completely derails your point. By definition (Newton’s Second Law), force is literally just the rate of change of momentum.

They aren't separate tools acting on a power system; they are two sides of the same coin.
If we look at how Shadow Slave actually operates, using real-world physics analogies to explain the magic completely misses the mark:
Essence is Fuel, Not Kinematics: Soul Essence behaves like liquid energy or pressure, not kinetic velocity. Sorcery in Shadow Slave relies on Names, Lineages, and Aspects, which govern the laws of reality.

The Concept of Control: When a character concentrates power (like Sunny focusing essence into a single strike or bracing with shadows), they aren't "manipulating how force disperses" via physics. They are altering the magical density of their soul essence or utilizing an Aspect ability that defies mundane physics entirely.

Trying to use a broken understanding of classical mechanics to explain a soft-hard magic system based on soul manipulation and conceptual authority doesn't make the system clearer

Velocity and acceleration have different dimensional units, one is length over time and the other length over time squared. They indeed exist in the same spatial dimension, but that’s not the only dimension to consider; even though they are both components of kinematics, they are their own existences and measure different quantities. They are obviously closely related, and you can calculate one from the other with enough information, but they don’t affect each other explicitly and instead can only be definitively said to at best describe the behavior of their counterparts without empirical data. Plus acceleration does NOT always follow the same directional vector, assuming you mean unit vector, as velocity, such as in circular motion.

I know force doesn’t just accumulate at a point, it was speculation on how Tamar’s powers would work given the description we have. The example I provided was just one of the first ones I could think of, and was more to demonstrate a difference in momentum across different densities and what that analog of conserved and transferred momentum could look like. Furthermore, that’s a really odd thing to pick at, especially considering you are of the stance that we shouldn’t even be considering classical physics for this story’s applications. It DOES become relevant when we put it in this context because her aspect can possibly allow redistribution of force over different areas, and if not her, then somebody else, and in either case it remains true that it is a possibility in their universe.

I spent so much time dealing with momentum specifically because that’s what her power was explicitly stated to affect. It can’t derail my point if that’s the foundational piece of information I had to go on. Also, while you are right that the change of momentum in respect to time will give you force, that at worst just reinforces my point via every action having an equal but opposite reaction; if the rate of change of the momentum she’s drawing from decreases somewhere, it must increase somewhere else in turn to have an opposite force, which is wherever she is focusing her power and aligned with the paragraph or so that we have on her abilities. In addition, you can’t just omit the laws of physics from their power system when it has been a recurring detail in the characters understanding their power. Nephis relearning swordsmanship from the fundamentals as a Master, Sunny’s considerations with the marbled shell and its preceding iterations (of which HAS helped him gain advantages during fights via Sunny leveraging the momentum or otherwise from the shell’s increased or otherwise dynamic mass), and so on. Those admittedly were more prevalent during the earlier stages of the novel when it was more grounded in Earth, but the point is that physics does still have a degree of influence. I mean, Telle LITERALLY has electromagnetic abilities. I don’t expect it to adhere strictly to stuff like Coulomb’s law to the letter, but its foundation is in electromagnetic physics. Even if her powers are amplified, it will still be amplifying the base level of whatever exists, there has to be something to amplify.

I’m not saying this explanation is how their entire universe works, or how aspects work in the first place. At best, I was building a framework to play with how her powers might be applied, on top of most of whatever science or math I mentioned being loose thoughts that led me to the conclusion rather than hard justification for my theory. In fact, I explicitly stated that most of that physics were surface level descriptions of relevant concepts and largely irrelevant to the actual point I was making. Even at that, it was just for fun, and not anything I was staking significant claim on.

You are misinterpreting my framework by treating a creative exploration of magic as a rigid physics thesis.

First, regarding velocity and acceleration: yes, they are mathematically linked via calculus, but my point stands that they measure fundamentally different physical quantities. In the context of an Aspect power, affecting a character's velocity (speed/direction) is not functionally identical to affecting their acceleration (the rate of change), as circular motion easily demonstrates.

Second, pointing out real-world concepts like momentum conservation or electromagnetism isn’t "odd" the novel itself establishes that physics provides the foundational framework for how characters understand and optimize their powers. Sunny’s tactical use of dynamic mass and Telle’s reliance on EM principles prove that the magic system builds upon, rather than completely discards, physical laws.

When I invoke Newton's Third Law, I am illustrating the narrative logic of balance: if Tamar's power siphons momentum from one area, it manifests as a force elsewhere. Critiques about "force accumulating at a point" miss the forest for the trees. I used basic physics as an analog to visualize a fantasy power concept, not as a strict mathematical proof.

The theory was meant to explore the mechanic of redistributing force and within the lore of this universe, that remains a completely valid possibility.

It's not rocket science. Let me give an example with imaginary numbers.

Nornally, if you're moving at the speed of 500, you generate a force of 1,000.

But with Tamar's ability alongside that initial force of 1,000, another force of 500 is added from the conversion of momentum. So basically, more powerful. Imagine a mantis shrimp. More of a burst attack. Only downside is she completely stops in motion. Like an instant brake. But with her other mobility abilities, it won't be a problem.

She's basically a melee cannon. A Supreme can just yeet her and she can convert her momentum into kinetic energy with her weapon as a medium.

It's far from nonsensical. It compliments her other abilities very well.

it's basically like transforming the energy from your movement into a blast of energy that she can control in shape and size. like turning the strength of a punch into the pin point of a needle
