Chapter 2982: Lost in Time

Sunny was done resting. He had not recovered from his wounds yet, but that did not matter... what mattered was finding his way back to Nephis and Ananke, who were somewhere out there right now, lost and alone.

How could he rest not knowing where they were, and what was happening to them? And there was the world beyond the Tomb of Ariel, too. Cassie, Rain, Effie, Jet, Kai, Aiko, and all the rest — he needed to return to them as well.

So, even though Sunny's battered body protested, he fought against the exhaustion weighing it down and slowly sat up, wincing from the terrible pain.

He was still in rough form, but had healed enough to move freely... somewhat freely, at least.

It was not going to be pleasant, though. In fact, it was going to be torture...

Just as he thought about it, however, a soft radiance ignited under his skin, and his wounds began to heal much faster. A soothing warmth enveloped his shredded soul.

Sunny drew a shaky breath.

Vile, meanwhile, was startled by the sudden outpouring of light and jumped away, pointing at Sunny with a finger.

"Damn!"

Sunny could not help but chuckle.

It seemed that Nephis had discovered the Shadow Bond, as well, and she indeed could heal him from a distance, as if he were a member of her Domain.

‘...How nice.’

Supremes were incapable of being beholden to another Supreme by nature. Sunny was an exception to that rule due to Shadow Bond, however, which allowed him to reap the benefits of two Domains.

While his body and soul were being slowly mended by the miraculous flames, Sunny stared at the distant fissure, wondering how he was going to find their source... how he was going to find Nephis.

He could summon Weaver's Mask and activate [Where is my eye?] again, tracing the String of Fate that connected them back to her. However, that enchantment consumed a dreadful amount of essence, and in his current state, Sunny would only be able to sustain it for a brief moment. One moment was not enough to navigate eternity, so...

It was another dead end.

‘What the hell am I supposed to do?’

He remained motionless for a while, trying to come up with a solution. No matter how he tried, however, nothing came to his mind — nothing that offered a reliable result, at least.

And Sunny really wanted to be certain before delving into the fissure. The price of failure was simply too high, this time. It was not even the threat of death... rather, it was a threat of something much worse than death. Of spending eons lost in time, slowly losing his mind and turning into something even Sunny would not recognize, let alone Nephis.

‘Curse it all.’

He grimaced.

Just when Sunny was considering whether he should plunge into the fissure anyway and spend an eternity trying to find his way back to his lover — quite like that damn Odysseus, the stories of whom had been following him like a stalker throughout the years — he suddenly felt something.

‘Huh?’

The sensation was faint, but persistent.

It was as if something was pulling him subtly on the wrist.

Looking down, Sunny raised his hand and studied it, trying to determine the source of the subtle sensation.

And there, in the soft radiance of Neph's healing flames...

He saw a string of silver silk wrapped around his wrist, shimmering in the light. The thread was so thin that it cast no shadow and was all but invisible to the naked eye. There was an ethereal quality to it, as well, as if it were not entirely real.

But it was.

It extended from his wrist into the darkness, rising into the black abyss above and stretching in the direction where the fissure loomed in the distance.

Sunny stared at the string in confusion for a moment.

Then, his eyes widened a little.

"Ananke?"

Sunny sighed deeply, then let out a quiet laugh.

"Crap... I can't believe it."

It seemed that Ananke had connected a string of her mystical essence silk to him, back on the surface of the Estuary Lake. And now, that string was there to lead him through the maze of eternity, back to the beginning of it all.

Just like Ariadne's string had led Theseus out of the Labyrinth.

Suddenly, Sunny did not feel tired anymore. Instead, he felt full of energy.

Looking at Vile, he smiled.

"Get your things, waif. We're going home."

The Thieving Bird's spawn stared at him in confusion for a few seconds, then grinned.

"Crap!"

The corner of Sunny's eye twitched.

He let out a heavy sigh and rubbed his face.

"Why is it only repeating the bad words? Just what kind... ah, never mind. I should probably start watching my tongue around the brat..."

A young and impressionable Devil like that could easily develop bad habits, after all.

‘Luckily, with a role model like me around, that thing is bound to grow up well.’

Nodding to himself, he gave Vile a benevolent smile.

The brat shivered and took a step back, for some reason.

...Soon enough, they were ready to leave the heart of the Stone Titan behind and delve into the maze of eternity... to return to the heart of the Stone Titan, far in the past. And while Sunny was preoccupied with thoughts of returning to Nephis, and of Nephis remembering him...

Unbeknownst to him, someone else was remembering him, as well.

Fate was a far greater force than time, after all. So when its tapestry was changed, the change was felt all across existence — even beyond the great walls of the Tomb of Ariel. By those who were sensitive to that, at least. Far away, on the Chained Isles, Cassie swayed, her remaining eye widening.

Inside her ruined mind, the great gaps that had been empty for numerous years...

Were suddenly not empty anymore.

And as the fog that had been permeating her mind cleared, the Spell whispered into her ear...

It's time for Cassie to ascend. I assume her act of defiance is against Fate this time since she was a guiding force behind Sunny breaking free of his Fate initially.

Ah yes we be telling anything as defiance. The mf who got rid of fate as a master( he got rid of it before completion of nightmare) is not acting defiance, the person who helped , oh defiance worthy of supreme. Previously some mf was telling jet should be supreme cause of soul of khanact. Not every little thing is defiance

So it's quite different, Sunny didn't get rid of his fate, the VTB took it sunny just got robbed and Cassie planned that robbery meticulously for years. Her orchestration spanned from before the 2nd nightmare to the defeat of Asterion. She used her powers to manipulate Fate in order to get the outcome she desired.
If that is not worthy of becoming a sovereign nothing is because sunny only had to stab himself and Nephis to bomb herself. Cassie's machinations altered fate itself.

From what I remember ascension to sovereign is about bending the world to your will, there is no human of the war realm that did it better than Cassie.
Also the defiance has to be linked to the individuals powers.

Jet does have a true name it's just not been revealed(G3 confirmed in discord I can't remember if it's in the story too pretty sure jet found it cringe), as for mordret he more than likely has one it's kinda impossible not too atp for him. Jets flaw does not make her soul core shattered, her character is centered around being a grim reaper/wraith. Mordrets mist is explicitly stated to be nothing related dude✌️😭

Well you can't fault her for that. That was necessary to give Sunny a choice that she had robbed him of. If Sunny didn't make a choice himself their relationship including Neph would remain broken. She wanted Sunny to choose this path but unfortunately he had to feel the consequences of his freedom before he could give it up.

Bro I don't really get how Cassie felt the return of Sunny's fate across time because Fate is a greater power than time?

If that was true and Sunny was bound to reclaim his fate in the tomb of Ariel, and it's effect is felt across all timelines then... How did they even lose their memories..?

Because if the return of Fate affects all timelines then no matter which point tof time, Sunny's fate was always returned to him..

Being frozen in time just requires being incredibly slow. Well, not so incredibly for us mortals- we can only see between 30 and 60 fps which is already a fair bit of slowing- but far more for beings on Sunny's level, And Cassie is on the same level. Combine that and her unique relation to experiencing time, and she might have time to do something with it.

But that doesn't explain how she can regain her memories at the exact same time sunny regains his fate.

If you're saying that the outside to the TOA is really slow compared to the inside (which it's not, it was stated when sunny delved into the soul sea of shadow sect members) then for Cassie to remember, it would take years longer than when sunny regained his fate

It's all split second POV switch, means when Cassies time stopped Suneph went inside, now Sunny got fated back it means they've exited the tomb and time now resumes normally. Prolly on the way back ATM

Wait no, then this theory still doesn't make sense because then there would be no need for G3 to explain that Fate has greater power than time.. that just made it more confusing for us to understand it..

Cuz if Sunny and Nephis had to leave the tomb for the effect of fate to register then Fate doesn't have greater power than time but the opposite has been stated. Idk anymore bro

Maybe fate's power registered for higher beings and the effect of regaining memories only happened for the lower level beings after they returned from the tomb

I don’t think there is a problem here. Because even if time is stopped in one context, it doesn’t necessarily prevent effects from being processed in another. In software terms, this is similar to having concurrent threads: while one loop runs indefinitely, another function can still continue processing shared data

But what if that loop (Outside) depends on the loop (TOA) to even start?

Something that hasn't started or is frozen in time can't function. Like the loop of the TOA is working but the loop of the outside world is frozen

It's if else statement. Logically they're already out and time resumes normally..

Unless they've chosen a different exit point in the future of entry.

Another possibility? They've chosen a past point from entry. Meaning Sunny, Nemphis and Ananke are already there, just waiting for their current Sunphis to enter the tomb. Now they can reveal themselves

I kinda of understand, So sunny regains fate and that effect is felt but the rest of the time in the tomb for Sunphis becomes an instant when they eventually leave the tomb so right now Sunny and Nephis are already out of the tomb but we'll have to wait and see the conclusion for this theory of yours. Nice theory though.

You know a simpler solution would be if time started flowing in the tomb normally again after Sunny regained his fate or after time shattered but neither of that has been said and even that might not make sense in it's entirety so we're drawing at short straws here. All of it is just a theory right now and even sunny doesn't know what the effect of him regaining Fate has on the outside world.. he should check that

Sunny losing his fate made a blindspot. Think about it like this: the whole time that it was lost is a black box you can't see into, out of, or past. So Cassie could see a way into the box and a way out of the box once she was in it, but could never see the whole timeline as it was "fated" to be. Until time went out of the box again, she couldn't look back and fully understand the path they were all walking. Additionally, between the struggle to remember and the lack of relevance, she wouldn't have even pointed out the path to recover the fate until it became the only path in which people survived.

Addendum: A lot of "Fate" is an illusion- it's just the consequences of past and current states of the world. Being able to see where that all leads a little more definitively is the only way to decide to change it, while simultaneously making it seem like a force directing things. Consider the prophecy from Harry Potter, specifically the whole "neither can live while the other survives" bit. Even Dumbledore in universe debunked it when he told Harry basically: "kid, whether you heard that prophecy or not, you have enough history between you and Voldy to never leave each other alone. That prophecy only matters because of someone believing in it."
... then again, once things get to Divine levels like Weaver or LOTM, fate becomes a literal weapon. Probably only surpassable with equal levels of time control or other "nah, you" type magic. Again, LOTM.

Apologies in advance if my comment is either incoherent or doesn’t respond to the question in the way you’d hope, but I think it makes sense in universe. First, the way fate manifests and influences reality isn’t clearly defined, and just because it transcends time doesn’t mean it expresses itself the same way in every instance. To that end, Cassie knew that he would get his fate back and what the gap of him being fateless would more or less entail. The theme of Cassie having to trust the judgement and decisions of her past self, who has repeatedly been described to have known how the “unpredictable” future would more or less unfold, is prevalent since the party reached saintdom. Additionally, I imagine fate got infinitely more complex, and the future is mutable depending on the choices and intent of the participants, as seen in Cassie’s fight with the corrupted fortune seer in the nightmare version of the Tomb of Ariel. To that end, she could’ve had access to the knowledge of what would happen, but it could’ve been some sort of bottleneck of her capabilities to act on, influence, or interpret fate before she ascended to sainthood and later, presumably, supremacy.

I have admittedly lost my train of thought by this point, but I hope there was some nugget of information in that incoherent ramble that kinda helps analyze and break down the situation at hand as I’m understanding it. I’m gonna go pass out now, cheers

Ok so I kinda of get it in a way like

Fate is a force greater than time this it can detect the strings of fate to see information and return to the Cassie connected to the string of Fate of Sunny and Nephis currently in the Tomb of Ariel if that makes sense? Actually I don't even understand how that works since it's still the same issue? The whole if Sunny was bound to regain fate and it's effects span across all timelines and all Cassie/others of the timelines are connected via fate then all Cassie/others should have been able to remember Sunny..

Another thing would be, if time IS frozen outside the tomb, even if their memory returns, they're still frozen..

Honestly this time travel makes no sense.

A bit more rested now, I’m not saying I’m right just that this is how I understand it. This Is pedantic but they aren’t really frozen, I think. If this works like I think it does, there was no difference in time between Sunny entering and leaving the ToA, it was instantaneous to the outside world. I won’t debate the minutes of frozen time though, that’s not really the point. I maintain that it’s more likely Cassie know the general flow of events, not the specific details, purely because she wasn’t powerful enough to comprehend and manipulate everything yet. Plus just because something is part of the same system doesn’t mean you have instantaneous access to it. We don’t know what accessing the tapestry of fate looks like, much less how changes in that tapestry well affect their ability to “read” It. I’m thinking of it kinda like a river. Like you can tangibly go to any singular point of the river, but it takes time to get there. And the river is just the general shape of the past and future, the water that it consists of is ever changing. She knew the when and where, just not what water filled the reservoir. The metaphor falls apart a bit for the past, which is objectively less transient than the future, but I hope this makes some degree of sense. Though I could also just be off my rocker and rationalizing, who knows

I honestly have no idea what this means brother, just saying if time is frozen then during the time Sunny is in the pyramid, how is Cassie able to feel the fate returning and how can every one of these events happen..

The simplest answer would be that ... Time just started flowing again after Sunny regained his fate but that hasn't been said or that time started running when they broke time and Sunny wound up in whatever time he is in right now but again, that hasn't been said yet

That’s so fair, I do ramble. It’s possible that time “continued to flow,” I just don’t think Sunny’s fate interferes with how the Tomb of Ariel works. I think there’s just a disconnect between when both POVs happen. I think this turning point in the battle marked where Sunny and Nephis both made it in and out of the pyramid, is what I’m getting at. Everything up to this point on Cassie’s side by this logic was their expedition to the Tomb of Ariel. This is the last comment I’ll make on it, I realize I’ve become a bit of a broken record :p
