Chapter 2964: Final Mercy

As Cassie reached the third floor of the Ebony Tower — the floor where Nether's workshop had been — the windows suddenly exploded into a hurricane of crystal fragments, and a swarm of black crows poured inside like a torrent of hungry darkness.

The crows surrounded her in a deafening choir of cries, a myriad of sharp talons and cruel beaks rending at her face and sinking into her body, making her bleed.

Cassie raised a hand to protect her eye and let out a short cry, staggering toward the wall and slamming into it at full speed.

'Wake of Ruin...'

The swarm of crows barred her path, cutting off her only path to salvation. Looking at the stairs leading to the fourth floor, Cassie gritted her teeth and readied her dagger.

Her exhausted voice sounded hoarse when she spoke, her tone full of dark determination:

“Out of my way, Cor. I... don't have time for mercy today."

The crows did not listen.

***

At the same time as Cassie attempted to ascend the Ebony Tower, Mordret escaped from the mirror hidden on its underground floor.

He rolled on the cold obsidian, suppressing a scream, and remained motionless for a few moments, his body contorting in painful convulsions. Finally, broken and bloodied, he let out a tortured groan and pushed himself off the black stone.

Kneeling in front of the mirror, he drew a shaky breath, and then slowly raised his pale face to look at his reflection.

His reflection was looking back at him with worry and panic, the concerned world of white mist behind it drowning in vile darkness.

“What did you do? Brother, what did you do?"

The other's voice was shaking.

Mordret's soul was being consumed by the Corruption, and his mind was drowning in the alien endlessness of the Void. He could feel the Nightmare Spell turning its back on him, abandoning him like a lost cause.

A pale smile illuminated his bloodied face, and then he let out a laugh, crimson drops falling from the corners of his mouth.

"What did I do?"

Mordret paused for a moment, his face contorting in agony. Then, overcoming it, he drew a hoarse breath and said in a bitter tone:

"Everything... I did everything. Everything I could."

His reflection looked behind it, at the vile darkness flooding the concerned expanse of white mist. The face of the other was pale, twisted in terror.

Mordret studied him for a short while, then forced out a smile.

“Ah... but what can you do? Doing your best doesn't always pan out. Life is unfair that way."

It was so cruelly difficult to keep stringing words together. To keep himself together. The vast darkness was flooding his mind, full of visions so alien that there were no words to describe them... radiant, harrowing. Utterly revolting, irresistible. Inevitable.

Mordret knew that he did not have much time left.

He looked down, whispering:

“Unfair... it's unfair, unfair. Why do you get to... argh!"

He growled, clutching at his face, his nails leaving deep grooves on his skin. Then, he grew still, remained silent for a few moments, and said in a hollow tone:

“I really hate you, you know?"

The other Mordret looked at him with a solemn expression.

“I know."

Mordret grinned.

"I wanted to kill you for a long, long time. You know?"

He laughed.

"Now's my chance, don't you think?"

Then, his laughter turned into a groan, and he shook his head slowly.

“It truly is frustrating, my hateful brother... I wasted so much effort on so many fruitless things, and in the end, I still ended up no better than that pathetic, revolting thing — Soul Stealer. No, that detestable abomination never attained Supremacy, did he? So I will be like the Skinwalker, instead. Why did I even bother destroying it, then? Huh? Answer me!"

The other Mordret remained silent, not knowing what to say. Mordret stared at him for a moment, and then scoffed.

“Gods, why are you so useless? You can't... can't even..."

He paled, and then let out a scream, bending down to the ground. A bestial growl escaped from his lips, full of anger and torment.

"No... no, becoming like one of those contemptible things does not agree with me. I refuse the indignity of becoming like them, you wretched fool. I'd rather die."

His reflection finally moved, leaning toward the surface of the mirror as the world became consumed by darkness behind it — the darkness coming closer and closer, its tendrils almost reaching his secluded refuge.

“Is that why you came here, brother? Do you... do you finally need my help?"

He looked at Mordret, and then smiled sadly.

"In the end, is this the only way I can be helpful? All I can do... is help you die."

His gaze was mournful as he studied Mordret's broken figure.

“If so... I am willing. I will help you, brother. All I have to do is destroy myself, right? If that means that you don't have to suffer anymore, of course, I will.”

His tone was kind and soothing.

Mordret stared at him silently for a few long moments, and then snarled through the pain:

“What are you talking about, you fool?"

Just as the darkness was about to swallow his reflection, he reached into the mirror and grabbed him by the throat.

Pulling his other self from the reflections, Mordret threw him to the ground and growled:

“And what were you doing, just waiting there to be consumed by the Corruption? Have you no mind of your own, you pitiful worm?!"

He stared at the other part of himself hatefully for a few long moments, swaying from the strain of keeping the Corruption from consuming him whole.

He could keep it at bay, still...

Just barely.

He was already forgetting why he wanted to, though.

Mordret inhaled deeply.

“You see, my loathsome Flaw... I am unwilling to become a demented abomination, but I am also reluctant to let the Dreamspawn win. To let this cursed world win and devour me. To let the story of Mordret of Nowhere come to a meaningless conclusion — nothing more than a side character in the annals of history, a stepping stone for the Dreamspawn to leave behind on his path to Ascension. So..."

He looked into the eyes of his other self, a harrowing darkness slowly seeping into his own.

“I don't need you to destroy yourself, fool."

Mordret lingered for a moment and then forced out a smile, a hint of amusement finding its way into his pained voice:

“I need you to destroy me, instead."

Dude, I was thinking about a really crazy theory. Have you ever considered that the Vile Bird stole something from Nephis's mother, leaving her in that state—an empty shell—and that killing the Vile Bird to help Sunny reclaim his destiny also allows Nephis's mother to regain her consciousness? I wonder if that's why G3 included Nephis's mother in these recent chapters, since before she was a secondary character who barely appeared. I found it strange that Cassie and Rain were taking care of her. If we delve deeper into this question, maybe there are more people who were "erased from existence" by that damned Vile Bird, and killing that bastard could bring a bunch of people back to life.

Bro what do you mean you find it strange Cassie and Rain are taking care of smile of heaven? She is nephs MOTHER of course they'd take care of her, vegetable or not.

I do think we'll see her eventualy, we know she disappeared into a leve 5 gate, so maybe sunny and nephis find her on the 5th nightmare

I just found it strange that the author left Smile of Heaven so exposed to danger with that demon Asteriona loose in the waking world. Nephis could have left her mother in the Shadow Clan where she would be safer. Or does G3 have some plan for her in this story arc?

but shes not a random character she's nephis's mother, and was in the original sovereigns group. ki song even states she held the group together and kept them grounded and it was as if heaven itself smiled upon her. i do get what you mean though she's a husk and has no substance as a character yet regardless spirit or saint she will be coming back(probably.).

the vile thieving bird has nothing to do with nephis's mother? her soul went missing near the 5th rank nm gate in north america thats why broken swords whole plan was to clear that nm. the goal for sunny and nephis is to get his fate back and then go challenge that nm seed in north America. no hate but how did you even come to this conclusion? did you skip chapters?

I also read that her soul is trapped in the 5th nightmare, but here's my question: how did her soul end up in the 5th nightmare? If her court entered the 4th nightmare to become supreme!!! If Vile Thieving Bird isn't only in one nightmare, he can appear in several nightmares to steal destiny in an attempt to return to life!!

its her aspect it allows her soul to leave her body and roam around. when the gate appeared broken sword was under the assumption it got sucked into the gate. it might not have even been an assumption I think ki song mentioned she would still give them signs and signals and then
one day she just stopped which caused the group to break apart.

Will mordy be complete?... he should be, but what if he breaks again, but after he becomes supreme so his new selves will all be supreme all seven of them... because nobody can get rid of their flaw

But Badret said goodRet was his flaw, or is his Flaw his death since reflection shouldn't really be death and should only die when no one is there to witness them( but that is bull and I Know it, so what will really happen to our boy)... I can't assume with confidence what will happen next but there should be 7 of him after this

g3 simply has to show something cool in this storyline to avoid disappointing readers. Think of it as a bet. Apotheosis is a very "cool" outcome, while failure is not. No matter what you bet on, a victory for the "boring" side always makes the bets more boring. To compensate for the boring bets, g3 has to show something unusual. What could be more unusual than the first Spirit in a novel? The first human without a flaw. That's my best argument for the ideal Mordreth theory.

I agree, I think the only way to make this fit into the storyline though is if your no longer able to ascend after becoming a perfect being. So Kindret would be stuck at Sacred or supreme after destroying mordred.

I don’t think he’ll be complete. He’s still missing the other 5 or so shards that his father and Clan Valor destroyed, if I’m remembering that part right. I think he’ll just be “not a complete psychopath” anymore. I’ve no idea what that looks like, this is just based on what has been said in the novel so far. I don’t think he’d be able to recover them any more than Sunny would be able to recover his shadows were they destroyed.

Though this event makes a lot of sense, between Cassie imparting all of Mordret’s experiences to Goodret, and like- how would they have come back from a Sacred Mordret. That still would’ve meant Mordret probably would’ve wiped out humanity to kill Asterion, and I don’t think Sunny and Neph are slated to become Sacred within this arc. At the very least, not before they get back. So them trying to deal with a foe they struggled with even while on the same level, it would’ve been an impossible fight that wouldn’t have fit.

The second paragraph of this is basically entirely unrelated to your comment, in hindsight. I just wanted to talk about it XD
Anyways, it would be cool to be proven wrong and Mordret DOES become a full person again with 7 distinct manifestations, I just don’t see it happening. I think Mordret is more interesting remaining mostly broken, it serves his character well.

Edit: I have since been corrected. He personally absorbed his 5 other fragments and did become more whole, only leaving Goodret alone because he embodies their ability to die. Goodret reabsorbing Mordret to become “whole” again is basically a self-proving theory, despite how much broken Mordret makes sense to me. I still maintain that I don’t think he’ll have fully individually independent avatars as Sunny does, but it’s a vibe based theory more than something I can provide empirical evidence for. Anyways, cheers :p

I think goodret's supreme ability will be different from mordret's.
Since by killing his other self he would be defying his flaw. Not the same kind of feat mordret achieved by splitting his soul to millions of pieces.
And I think the flaw you defy changes your abilities as well.
    Just a personal theory btw.
And the memories Cassie gave to goodret changes things for his future as well, since he won't be totally oblivious to the world after becoming complete.
